Super short novella. Heroine is 29 years old. Hero is 15 years older than her and her father's friend. Would have liked to get more of their story than the quickie read this was.
Amazon and GR say this is 148 pages but I don't even think it had 85 pages to it.
I love the older man/younger woman trope. Being in a relationship with an age gap myself, I can easily relate to the characters and their feelings. Secrets of a Summer Night was a sweet and emotional book, and now I wholeheartedly look forward to Emma and Ian's story.
This has so much potential, and I love the trope, but it feels unfinished, and it doesn't appear that they get another book, so I've been left with wanting more from this story.
There wasn't really anything wrong with this. Let's start with that. Some grammatical errors, which I think should've been caught considering how short this little novel is. But nothing wrong with this little prequel into this series. There just... wasn't much here.
I know, I know. It was 59 pages max, and a portion of that was just a little snippet of the book that comes after it. What exactly was I expecting to be here? But at the end of the day, I've read short little novella books that managed to pack in enough to make me want to keep reading that next book. And guys, there just wasn't enough here. And that's sad, because I think if this had been a full and fleshed out novel, it could've been really interesting and cool.
But all we get, is really just the basic idea of what the story could've been. Two people who like each other. Age gap is an issue. I'm trying not to spoil it for anyone that might want to read it, but for those who don't care...
There's a fire thrown in somewhere really early in this book, but I was really confused by that. We never get an explanation on how it started or why it happened. Not even a one sentence explanation. (Potentially, Emma started it by accident or something? Maybe? I don't know. That's me reading between the lines, not an actual fact from the book, so do with that what you will.)
I have the first actual book of the series still on my to-read list for now, and I think I'll leave it there because the ratings for that one are greatly improved. It's actually a full-length novel, so maybe it's better. But for those who haven't made up their mind on where to start this series at... I would skip this one. I haven't read the next one yet, but I have a feeling that this little prequel isn't actually going to add anything to the experience for you.
Just my opinion. Nothing wrong with it, but completely unnecessary in my opinion. It needed more to be worth even the half-hour I spent on it. (Again, just my opinion.)
5 chapters only?! Is this kind of sample or something?!
I'm confused... Is this the book or just a sample of it? Cause even doesn't say anywhere that is a sample it gives me that way. Better start the series from book 2...
Rating: G Sex: none Language: don't remember any Violence: none HEA or Cliffhanger: happy, but not a real ending Do I need to read books before this one: no Would I read more of the series: not based on this book; I've got #2, so I'll read that to see
For 30yo woman, Laney seems awfully whiny and teenager-ish. For a 42yo man with his own business, Rand doesn't charge ahead and make decisions. Why didn't they explore this relationship 10 years ago?? We don't learn anything about the characters because it's only about 20 pages long. Half of the downloaded book was the first chapter 2 book number 2. No character development surrounding the fire, we never meet her father or Emma in the story and they appear to be a big influence on both characters, and there seems to be some kind of conflict growing with Jim but we don't know what it is. This was entirely unsatisfying.
----SPOILERS---- Ian was shot in the shoulder during a rescue mission in Mexico. It was during surgery he lost his sight.
Laney Wyatt answers a 911 call, and it's for her father's friend, Rand Mitchell, the man she's had a crush on for forever. He's 12 years her senior. He's Tom Selleck and the Marlboro Man all rolled up into one. She determines he's okay except for the dislocated shoulder, thinking training should involve how to deal with a patient who's fiiiiine, and accompanies him to the hospital.
He awakens in the hospital, and Laney is in his room with him. She's just coming from a house fire. She doesn't tell him it was her house fire. He tells her she's missed at the Shake Shack, her father's diner. He has feelings for her, and their age difference and her father have him nervous. He wants to ask her out, but he doesn't want to ruin a friendship and he doesn't want to cause a Ruckus in our family.
Laney tells Jim, her partner, that her sister, Emma, has been offered a job to help a newly blind soldier learn to cope. They're even offering room and board for her and all her animals. She wasn't originally going to take the job, but because of what happened today, she is. Her father's going to live in his camper to watch over the property and outbuildings, and then probably move in with his fiancée, but Laney has no place to stay. Ever since the car accident that killed her mom and blinded Emma, Laney has been taking care of the family instead of following her dreams to be a doctor in a large city. She turns down Jim's offer of a couch (or bed) and sleeps in the bunkhouse. She knows he's attracted to her, and that she should be to him; after all, he's only a year older, he's a vet, he's attractive. She's just not.
The next day, she's at the remains of the house. Rand drives up. He takes her to a home that's for rent. It's one of his, and she will be staying rent-free. She starts crying, he gives her a hug, and he almost kisses her.
The next day, Rand goes to make sure Laney's settling in okay. He brings her an air conditioning unit. She overcomes all his objections, and he kisses her. They agree to not tell her dad for a while.
A few weeks later, she's at her dad's Diner watching Emma, her soldier, and some others eat and laugh. Jim offers her a ride home that she declines. She's jealous that Emma and Ian get to be public, but she and Rand don't. Rand comes in and is going to sit by her, but she is too afraid of her father forcing them apart. She heads to Rand's home. They confess their feelings for each other, but he tells her she's got to be sure because the town is going to be mean.
I got this and its sequel because the sequel sounded good and they were free on Amazon.
As some of the reviews have said, this was very short and didn't reveal much about the main characters. We're told he's a friend of her dad's, but how did they meet and if the dad doesn't handle challenges well, why has his friend stuck by him? I would have liked to know more.
Too short to make an impact. Heroine age 30 has a thing for her dad's best friend who is 15 years older. This book is actually more of a prequel for a new series.
The writing was enjoyable and easy to read. These two Laney and Rand have known each other for years because he is her dad’s friend. She has always had a crush on him even as a little girl and it has only grown over the years. But when her mother passed & her sister lost her eye sight it turned her world upside down. Her college and medical school were only dreams. She also had to help keep the family Shake Shak running. Dates were out truthfully no one compared to Rand for her. One good thing she became an EMT and it was as close as she was getting to med-school.
But she knew twelve years made a difference to some people, yeah it did when she was fifteen and he was twenty-seven, but now she’s twenty-nine and he’s forty-one not so bad, right? But he not once showed interest or acted differently until they were called out for an emergency at helix home. He was calling her beautiful openly in front of her co-workers and asking if she would go with him and hold his hand. Causing her co-worker Jim who also has a crush on her to notice they were carrying on like a flirty couple.
When the family home burns down her dad goes to live with the fiancé and Emma her sister gets hired to help a ex-SEAL deal with being blind. No one from the family asks about her. Making her feel left out and uncared for after giving so much for her family. The only one who came to her aid was Rand and took her to one of his rentals to live in rent free. And he, had just gotten out of the hospital.
Now I gave this four stars because of the way it ended with their acknowledgements toward one another. That’s it? To me where is the rest of the book? All this time all they did was kiss? Real?
I did like Emma’s beginning so much better than all of Laney’s book. Received this during July book giveaway.
Trigger Warnings include: mention of the death of a parent, house fire
I gotta be honest, this was within five star territory at the beginning. Rand is Laney’s dad’s best friend. And she’s had a crush on him since she was a teenager, before she even knew what that meant. Now as an adult, those fantasies are no longer sweet. And when she becomes his knight in shining ambulance, things shift between them. Especially when he returns the favor. Rand is a flirt, the southern gentleman kind, and I loved it! Taking care of her gave him peace of mind, and then some. He respected her more than he lusted over her. But it wasn’t just lust between them (and they both knew it). Too many years have gone by for that to be all it was. Laney took control, obliterating all of his excuses. But then I was thrown a curveball, after weeks of finally having what they both wanted, they weren’t communicating or taking further steps. That was on her though because he made it clear that he didn’t like sneaking around. He was saying all the right things though. She made is so much more complicated than it needed to be, and I was not a fan of her stubbornness. I had to keep reminding myself that she was about to turn 30, not 20.
#1 Worth the wait - Libby and Rand. 12 years, it's been 12 years since Libby met Rand, her father's best friend and now here she is taking the emergency call that finds her face-to-face with the man of her dreams, only he's hurt and she has to be a professional. Rand is 12 years older than Libby, and he knows if he acts on his feelings he could lose his best friend, her father. She's now 29 and the way she is looking at him, he sees the same thing on her face that he feels. Is now the time to finally act on their emotions? #2 Excerpt - Not by Sight. Emma and Ian. Ian is a SEAL and helps his brother Duncan with a kidnapping extraction in Mexico. 19 year old Kara has been held for 4 weeks and they finally know where she is. Ian gets shot in the shoulder, but the operation to remove the bullet leaves him blind! 28 year old Emma has been blind for 14 years, ever since the accident that took her mother. Now Duncan is needing help and her Uncle Bruce seems to think she's exactly what Duncan needs to help his brother Ian. Will it work?
I was really excited for this book by the premise but was a little disappointed when I opened it and saw how short it was. It is labeled as book .5 so I was expecting a shorter read but I thought there was going to be more than a few chapters to it. I like Rand and Laney though I did find Laney to be a bit too immature at times. We didn't really get to see them or their relationship fully develop though and we didn't get to see them explore the complications that could arise from an age gap relationship (ie telling her family and other people in the town). Also I was really confused about what happened with the fire. How did it happen, did someone set it? It made it seem like at one point Laney's sister Emma was responsible for it (unless I read that wrong) but nothing ever really came from that plot line. I did get Emma's book as well though because both were free on iBooks so maybe stuff will be more explained in that one.
72 of in total to book. First 6-7 are front matter, like cover, title page TofC. Story ends at 53%.
Approx 29 pages for the story. The rest is other works by "author". Links, and previews of other works.
The story is a pile of nothingness. Age gap, father's best friend. No development of characters. Most of the 29 pages are the female lead lamenting how her blind sister gets all the good men, how father will never allow relationship with male lead, and telling Rand she wants to be with him, but think of her father...who never actually shows up in the 29 she's dedicated to a story.
Because of this bait/hook scheme, I won't be reading the second book that features the blind sister, even though that one claims to be over 329 pages. I don't trust the author to actually follow through on delivering a fleshed out book of substance.
I loved this book. I got excited to pick this book and it is part of a series. This book stops at 48% with a sneak peek at another story.
There is an age gap between Laney and Rand and its 12 years- huge age gap here. Other characters are Jim and Emma and they all have a good addition to this main story characters.
It was a page turner!
“You know good and well that I do. I think I’ve loved you since the first time I set my eyes on you.”
“And it was so worth the wait.”
-These are some of my favorite lines or quotes from the book: Worth the Wait. If you haven’t read this book, give this book a try! Perfect read on rainy Days..
3.0 out of 5 stars Laney and Rand' s Love Tryst! 3.00***** Spoiler Alert
Laney and Rand, old family friends with a fifteen year age gap, who have finally found each other. They now have to tell or show the town they are a couple. This novella does not go any deeper into this big reveal, and therefore prevents the reader from bounding with these two characters. A tad disappointing, since they are also rarely mentioned in the other novels of this series, and this is book #1 of the series.

Very short, even if you'd think of it as a short story. Protagonists were sympathetic enough, the story (I would not like to use the word "plot" here) interesting enough, but the telling of it was a bit on the over-narrative side, i.e. there were not enough dialogues. And did I mention it was short? It was more like an outline for a story, an idea, than a full romance novel, as if the author published an idea that was a little bit fleshed out, or just the first chapter or two of the novel. That was a bit disappointing.
This book could be reads as first in thes series, however it does give away an event that happens in the second book. That being said it's not a real spoiler. This book was well written as was the second. I enjoyed it too the end. The plot was never lost to over-descriptive scenery. I would recommend this book to another.
Language: G; Mature Content: PG13; Violence: PG Really, this was fine, but I think it could have been better by continuing. I feel like I got all of the same story from reading the whole thing as I got from reading the synopsis and the first book of this series. I feel like the entire story itself didn't add much.
This is the shortest book I have ever read. I wasn't even aware of the book ending while reading. I was really getting into it and then bam, it was done! Two stories in one, the first one doesn't even end when the second one starts and then the book is done. Good thing this book or should I say short summary, was free.
There were some nice touches to this story, but nothing earth shattering. The main characters were likable, but again, not earth shattering. The editing is clean, the romance okay, and the plot flowed. But it had quite a few holes in the telling and it never really grabbed me. I wanted to get sucked into it, but it was just okay.
◾Laney Wyatt y Rand Mitchell ◾Doce años de diferencia, el mejor amigo de su padre pero ella lo ama ◾El tambn la ama en silencio y espera por ella ◾“You love me.” Rand’s thick eyebrows lowered even more as thought he tried to will the knowledge into her. “More than my own life. I love you,” he repeated. “But people will gossip and be awful and you’ve got be real sure you’re ready for that.”🌹🥀
Delany and Rand have fought off there love for year because it was not convenient but now its their time
Delany and Frank have fought off how they felt about each other for years. He was her dads friend. She was too young. It was never right. But no one else was right either. Maybe it was they’re time after all. With lots of prayer it might work.
This was a novella that I found in My Digital Library with Barnes and Noble that I had not put on my Want To Read shelf at Goodreads. I read it now in an attempt to finish more books in the chronological order I downloaded them. This is a prologue to series. The characters seem interesting but I am not looking for another series to start.
I was a little disappointed in this book because once I really got in to it, it ended. This is Laney and Rand’s story. Rand is Laney’s dad’s best friend. Of course, he’s twelve years older than her, but she’s loved him for years. Rand has fought his feelings for her for years. No spoilers, so grab your copy and see what happens
