I'm not generally concerned about the plots of the Amdani books, since I'm not reading them because of deep interest in the synopsis. As far as the readability goes, this is excellent. I'm a De learner, and finally a De book, so grateful! I believe my instructor said the translator is or was a Dysgu Cymraeg tutor with Coleg Gwent, which would help explain why this fits so well with what I've learned so far. It has to help that it's a translation of a learners' book to begin with. There are really very few footnoted new words, compared to other Amdani books, and the grammar structures are familiar, so I was able to just read it without having to work at it. Very satisfying.

(Of Helen Naylor's other books, I've read Cyfres Amdani: Stryd, Y. Dwynwen Teifi is the translator who adapted it for Cymraeg learners.)

Duw duw. I guess it was only a matter of time before my first one-star - I only finished this as it was 70-odd pages and I was really hoping it wouldn't go the way it did. Remember what I said about Un Noson? I take it back, I'm obviously not a hopeless romantic.

Before I rip the plot to bits, I'll say a good thing about this book - it's very easy for anyone who's finished Sylfaen to read, so the accessibility is brill. It was originally written as an ESL study piece named Two Lives by the aforementioned author. It's recommended at Uned 12 of Canolradd but I'm barely at Uned 3, and I managed to read it perfectly well.

Now. The plot.

As it stands, I can pass it onto another learner instead.

An English version is below!

Dyma'r llyfr cyntaf yn y Gyfres Amdani (i ddysgwyr Cymraeg) mwynheais i fel pe bai nofel yn Saesneg. Addaswyd y llyfr Helen Naylor gan Dwynwen Teifi - mae’r eirfa’n berffaith i Lefel Canolradd Dau. Mae’n stori yn hyfryd. Darllenais i’r llyfr yma dros un diwrnod, achos ro’n i eisiau gwybod beth fasai'n mynd i ddigwydd.
Mae’r stori yn rhychwantu hanner can mlynedd, o’r diwedd yr Ail Ryfel Byd, pan oedd Megan a Huw un ar bymtheg mlwydd oed. Mae tad Megan eisiau bod hi’n mynd i’r coleg, ond rhaid i'w chariad Huw gweithio yn y pwll glo.
Mae rhestr o’r cymeriadau ar y dechrau, sy ddim yn angenrheidiol, yn fy marn i, achos mae’n rhoi gormod o fanylion amdanyn nhw. Mae’r rhagair yn fwy diddorol - llythyr yw e. Y llythyr o’r teitl? Llythyr hwyrach yw ymgeisydd posib hefyd . . . beth ydy’n digwydd yn y stori Megan e Huw?
Roedd y teitlau penodau wedi'n ddethol iawn, ro’n i’n meddwl. Maen nhw’n ddefnyddiol, gan symud y stori ymlaen gyda chryno digwyddiadau. Dim un o eiriau yn wastraff.
Ro’n i’n caru Megan a Huw a ro’n i eisiau bydd popeth yn iawn amdanyn nhw. Roedd eu bywydau’n teimlo’n wir i fi, go iawn. Ro’n i’n drist ag hapus drostyn nhw.
Llyfr bach perffaith.

English version: The Letter
This was the first book in the Cyfres Amdani series for Welsh learners that I enjoyed as if it were a novel written in English. Helen Naylor’s book was adapted by Dwynwen Teifi – it’s just right for Intermediate 2 Level in the ‘Welsh for Adults’ course. It’s a lovely story. I read it over the course of a day, because I wanted to know what was going to happen.
The story spans fifty years, from the end of The Second World War, when Megan and Huw were sixteen years old. Megan’s father wants her to go to college, but Huw has to go down the mine.
There is a list of characters at the beginning, which, in my opinion, is unnecessary, as it gives away too much detail about them. The preface is more interesting – a letter. Is it the letter of the book title? There is also a later letter that is a possible candidate . . . what will happen in the story of Megan and Huw?
The chapter headings were well chosen, I though, moving the story on while summarising the chapter content. Not a word is wasted.
I loved Megan and Huw and wanted everything to work out well for them. Their lives felt real to me, and I was both sad and happy for them.
A perfect little book.

Dw i’n mynd i ddechrau trio i ysgrifennu fy adolygiadau llyfr yn gymraeg (sori am gamgymeriadau!) - byddai i’n ysgrifennu yn saesneg hefyd.

Wnes i mwynhau hyn - oedd e her perffaith a dw i wedi ddysgu llawer o geiriau newydd. (Maer geiriau ar y tudalen diwedd a mae fe’n rili defynddiol - enwedig i fi fel ddysgwyr a darllenydd newydd).

Dw i’n dros hanner ffordd yn fy nghwrs nawr, dw i wedi gorffen Uned ddeuddeg a hyn yw fy trydydd llyfr bo fi’n darllen yn cymraeg ar lefel’na. Dw i’n rili balch ohono fy hun!

Allai i ddim aros i ddarllen y llyfr nesa. Dw i’n gobeithio i wella fy adolygiadau llyfr yn gymraeg (dw i’n dal ddim yn dda iawn!).

Dw in meddwl bod llyfr’na yn fy hoff hyd yn hyn! Nesa plis!

This one might have been my favourite of all the Cymraeg books I’ve read so far. It was by far the most comfortable I’ve felt reading in Welsh, and the one where I’ve had to rely on the least in looking up some vocab. It was still a perfect challenge but I really enjoyed it.

Also helped that I absolutely loved the story and was hanging off the pages. I’m excited to go on to read more!

Mae'r stori yn caredig iawn. Mwynheiais i yn llawer iawn, ond ro'n i'n holi'r ffwrdd o ysgrifennu a'r teimladau o Megan ac Huw yn eu chwedegau.

Eitha rhagweladwy yn yr diwedd, sef yn annifyr pan rydy'n ddarllen mor araf!

Mae y llyfr yn gwych i fi ymarfer fy nghymraeg. Stori syml ond tipyn bach o gefndir hanesyddol.
