it was a cute middle grade vampire story, maybe if I was younger, I would enjoy it much more.
World building: ★★★★/5 it was happening in real world with fantasy elements. Cool!
Characters: ★★★(★)/5 main characters were too young. but Etty was a good strong kid (not annoying), also her companion. Vlad was my favourite character.
Written style: ★★★★/5 first person view, not a fan much. but in general, it was written well. it was an easy quick read. :)
plot: ★★★(★)/5 Excitements, especially in the last one quarter.
Etty Steele is a sixth grade, vampire hunter, or at least she’s supposed to be if only her powers would actually kick in. Her dad is mortal, but her mom is an all-powerful, kick a*s vampire hunter that is relentless when it comes to Etty’s training. Every single day, Etty’s mom makes train in their basement before and after school and has even taken Etty on extended “vacations” to learn survival training.
Once summer break has ended, Etty returns to school to be reunited with her best friend April. However, once school starts, a new boy has joined their class…Vladimir Nox, aka Dimi. Dimi has super pale skin and wears sunglasses indoors. Etty is convinced his a vampire, but April refuses to listen to her pleas to stay away from Dimi.
The book was a lot of fun to read. The plot has a great pace that kept me engaged the entire time. I loved that even though Etty’s mom was incredibly hard on her, you could see how much her dad would reinforced that Etty was loved and that her parents wanted nothing but the best for her. I also really enjoyed watching the progression of Etty and April’s friendship especially once Dimi came into the picture since Etty despised him. There were also twists and turns throughout the plot, which kept me on my toes.
Overall, I think this a really great read and perfectly hits the target audience (and people like me who love middle grade especially laced with magical creatures and elements!).
Thank you to Grayson Grave for providing me with an ebook. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.
I have never read anything by this author so I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The characters were interesting. I loved that April wasn't willing to judge people based on pre-conceived notions. Just because Dimi is a vampire, it doesn't make him evil. The adults have lots of prejudices in this book and can learn a lot from the children. Overall, it was a fun book that held my attention and I breezed right through it.

My Thoughts:
This was a cute story with a good lesson in morals, sometimes what we're taught isn't always what's right. You can't take everything at face value. With a fun cast of characters, the writing was clean and straight-forward. The plot easy to follow with good action sequences. A promising intro to a fantasy series that can be enjoyed by younger and older readers alike.
Listened to this on Audible. Thought it would be a good book to listen to while I was at work. Cute, quick very easy read. A great book for younger readers. Etty, the main character, would repeat things to herself after someone said it which was too repetitive for my liking but for a younger reader could really help them keep up with what is going on. The trio of friends are a good collection of personalities. Etty is the tough one but who fights for what is right, once she figures out what that is. April is the moral compass and girly girl who will rein in Etty when needed. And Dimi is the shy kid who is a little different but you can't help but love. I just wanted to reach into the story and give Dimi a reassuring hug anytime he showed nervousness or was being picked on. In every book I think we need that one character that everyone can agree to hate, and that is definitely Etty's mom. The story line and action scenes are all really easy to follow. The little teaser introduced in the last chapter for the next book has me intrigued. I will definitely be recommending this book for any younger readers I know, but I think I will keep up with Etty, April, and Dimi for myself as well.

Review: This is the first book in a series, with the third to be published in December 2020. I really enjoyed it and I cannot wait to start the second book.
Being a vampire story, it follows a theme that has already been widely exploited so it could feel like a familiar story. It seems to have some influence from the Twilight saga, but it is appropriate for children and it does not focus on romance. I would have preferred the final conflict to be more difficult to resolve and I would have liked to see more action involved in that part of the book.
On the other hand, it is a text full of mystery and adventure, which engages the reader from the beginning. Its characters do not resemble the usual characters in this type of books, which is something I really liked. Following the protagonist's thoughts at all times is one of the aspects that I enjoyed the most. A good story unfolds in this book, but it is possible to see that there is still an important part to tell, which will probably unfold in the sequels.
I really liked the way in which the values of tolerance, understanding and acceptance of those who are different from us is approached. In addition, the values of friendship, truth, justice and love are addressed in the story.
I recommend this book for readers over the age of 9 who enjoy vampire and adventure stories.
"Family is blood (...), the blood inside you, which flows through you."
Page-turner was the story, I literally couldn't put it down due to no free time I had to read it daily otherwise I could have finished it in a day or two. I loved everything about this book from characters to plot setting, theme to twist. How fascinated it has made me wonder connection between Etty and Vladamir's ancient history drugged fate to meet them in early teens form wasn't just an accident.
I think it is highly recommendable to everyone regardless of age can enjoy a heart skip and breathtaking story which has been wobbled with a twist, thrill, and action-packed events.
It is a fast-paced story where I couldn't find a yawn out of me rather sped up reading. It hooked me to chapter 1 showing up the daily routine of Etty's coming going of school and practice part further to that Friendship with April and her ancestor legacy revealing later. Twist of the newcomer, Vladamir, a new boy mysterious enough made Etty unfold history about him handling her routine and hunter life at bay and balance has been dangerous and challenging until she found out actual matter yet skeptical about it.
Language, writing style, and language have been descriptive quick development, and thrilling enough to be captured and glued in the story. Inviting dialogues, humorous and engaging chemistry between characters give additional definition to the story. I loved, enjoyed, and recommend all to read once yourselves.
Preteen Etty Steel is being trained by her mother to be a vampire hunter. Even though her hunter skills have not shown themselves yet, her mother wants to be prepared and trains her hard. She is not allowed to tell anyone she is a hunter, even her best friend. Although things change when she finds out witches exist and her friend is one. A new kid starts school with them and Etty is sure he is a vampire. Etty soon discovers that the training and history lessons she has learned about vampires are not as black and white as her mother claims them to be.
I enjoyed this very much. Etty’s story is likable especially for those into Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Even though Etty is much younger as she learns to train than Buffy. The story is fun, exciting, and has a sort of comfort I find in watching or reading BTVS. I also feel like there is so much more to learn in this world. We learned a little back story to vampires but I am also interested in the back story to magic and witches.
There is nothing I can think of constructively to make the story better but I do think there is something that would because it was really good but not awesomely great. I just can not think of what.
The second book in this series is out and I am eager to read it. Etty Steel is my new favorite vampire hunter.
Etty lives in the town of Brightwater, a seaside town that is rumored to be inhabited by witches. Etty lives with her human father and her mother who is a vampire hunter. Every day Etty must endure training sessions in a secret room that is hidden away in the basement of her house. Etty has one friend, a classmate named April Showers. They have not spent much time together lately as Etty has spent the summer at a vampire hunting training camp. When Etty and April return to school in September, things become awkward. A new boy named Vladimir Dox has all the markings of a vampire, dark glasses, red lips, pale skin, and strange behavior. April befriends Vladimir; Etty is skeptical. Then two people are murdered, and April reveals her grandmother has given her a ring for protection. Etty discovers that April comes from a family of witches who don’t want vampire hunters interfering with their work. When a schoolmate and Etty’s mom disappear, April and Etty decide to take Vladimir with them to investigate. What will happen to this strange alliance? Is Etty’s mom in danger? Will they solve the murder mystery and discover who is the vampire lurking around the town? What will happen to the friendship between April and Etty?
🦇Title: Etty Steele Vampire Hunter 🦇Pages: 180 🦇Author: Grayson Grave (@graysongrave) 🦇My rating to this book: 5 stars 🌟 - - - 🗡️Vampires and witches take center stage in Grayson Grave's exciting coming-of-age story, Etty Steele Vampire Hunter... The text captures the emotions, psychological tensions, and feelings of confusion and insecurity that all children feel, and also conveys warmth and caring between its somewhat supernatural leads... Etty Steele Vampire Hunter concludes with new dangers lurking and a cliffhanger ending that invites hope for a sequel. Also supernatural soiree sure to satisfy young vampire fiction fans, Etty Steele Vampire Hunter is highly recommended for school library fantasy collections, I can't wait for the book 2 of this one ❤️ I remember while reading it, i remembered Twilight saga on this book its really super fast paced i love it!!!! - - - Thank you, @graysongrave for letting me read your book and thank you for sending me your book all the way here in the philippines i really love it and i can't wait to get the seconf book, thank you and more power. I highly recommend this book to those people who love vampires & witches 🗡️
Etty is only ten but her mother forces her to undergo rigorous training to become a vampire hunter. Etty has not shown any particular abilties in that, though. Her mother still pushes her harder and harder in her training. (What her mother is doing to her is, to me at least, major child abuse.)
A new boy shows up at Etty's school and, as expected, she figures out that he is a vampire. Worse yet, there's a prophecy about him that says he can become the greatest evil known.
It also turns out that April, Etty's friend, may very well be a witch.
To make things even worse she finds out there is a group of vampires in the town. There's also a boy, Bane, who is a major bully who ends up captured by a vampire queen.
So, all Etty has to do is defeat the vampires, handle Bane, remain friends with April and deal with the various lies that her mother has been telling her. The thing that bothers me is just how badly her mother treats her. It seems to me that she's trying to force Etty to make up for her own mistakes in the past.
Many thanks to the author for providing me with this copy of Etty Steele Vampire Hunter in exchange for an honest review.
Etty Steele is a sixth grade vampire hunter, who’s mother is determined for her to be the best. When a new boy, Dimi, joins her class at school, he shows all the signs of being a vampire, but he doesn’t seem like the evil monster her mother has told her all vampires are.
While Etty struggles to figure out whether Dimi is in fact a vampire, she’ll need to decide whether to follow what she’s always believed, or what she can see in front of her.
This was such a cute book for middle grade readers. I loved the fact that Etty wasn’t “all good” and had to try and navigate her way through several issues (such as being accused of bullying and what friendship really means). It was a quick read that was a lot of fun, with some really great messages throughout the story. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!
Grayson nails this one for his target audience, very young adults. Etty or Henrietta is a nine year old vampire hunter in training. Her mother, Felicity drills her daughter everyday in the art of killing vampires. Readers will think this is how the modern- day Buffy, got her start. Two witches have died. Another is on the radar. Who is doing this and why? A boy from school has disappeared. A deranged vampire is hiding in the local cemetery. A new boy has joined the ranks at the Etty’s school. And there is talk of a vampire clan taking up residence in Brightwood, Scotland. Are all of these events coincidence or is there a connection to all the events? And lastly, does Etty’s mother have a secret that could undermine everything Etty has come to believe? Only one way to find out. Get a copy.
I'm not a fan of vampires and zombies so don't read this genre. However, now that I have a granddaughter the right age for the reading level of this book, I reluctantly gave it a try when the author offered a no-obligation copy. Much to my surprise, I read it with delight and look forward to sharing it with my granddaughter. The blood-sucking and violence are there but muted enough to make the book palatable for young readers and the adults who fret over them. Grayson adds a moral twist that makes the book even more appropriate for the age level. In all, a delightful introduction to the shivery genre.
100th book of 2021! Finally the big three digit! I’ve never made it this far, so let’s celebrate this nice milestone in my reading life. I’d like to thank myself and my brain (and my library too I guess they’re awesome and it’s such an amazing service that we just get for free like ugh).
The book was pretty good. I can see middle school girls really liking this which is good because that’s who it’s for. It had a good lil mystery element. The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish the mom apologized at the end. Like she was so mean for no reason. But overall very good, would recommend for young readers.
It's a kid-size version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," in which Etty is the latest in a lineage of vampire hunters. Unlike Buffy, however, Etty Steele's life is not wracked with tragedy and turmoil. She has loving parents, including a mom who teaches Etty vampire-hunting. Etty doesn't have Slayer-style powers of super-strength or agility yet, but that's part of the story.
These stories are perfect for moms and daughters to read together. The stories are thrilling and crammed full of adventure, but they're also fun and funny.
If you were a fan of Buffy, you will like Etty Steele, as it has a similar feel to it. Etty is being trained by her vampire hunter mother, who has a laser like focus on her success as a vampire hunter and not much else (case in point - the entire issue the Etty struggles with reading but the mom treats it as a non-issue). The dynamic between the two is well crafted, and Etty is a very relatable and likable character. The struggle and growth that she achieved in the book is well-done and one of the highlights.
I was doubting between giving this one 3 or 4 stars. The writing is very plain but the characters and the relationships between them, were great and the story got better and better. It was an easy fast read. This had some great twists I mostly didn’t see coming, at the end and I enjoyed reading this vampire story that also had witches and changed up the usual vampire & vampire hunter roles, so I went for 4 stars. I’m very curious to see how our 10 year old vampire hunter with a conscience and her unique friends, handle the upcoming adventures in the next books!
This series is certainly for the younger crowd unless, of course, you're like me just living the dream. It starts out slow (an old trick to get you to keep on reading) then about 3 chapters in it begins to speed up. Very well done! I liked the fullness of the characters, the minor angst of them, and the realization by some that all is not as we are told. Great storytelling, great morality plotline, and a great read in the sun or in front of a fire in the wintertime. I will look forward to the next in the series. I may be older than dirt (that's what my children say) but I still like stories like this one. Well Done!
This was a super cute book. While it did focus on vampires, hunters, and witches, there were some underlying truths to the story. Being a true friend to someone. Looking for what is on the inside instead of just looking on the outside. You have to find the truth out for yourself. You need to listen to what people are saying, and not what you have been told.
I was surprised to learn the main characters were only ten years old! They are so Wise and disciplined. This story has very positive messages and is acceptable for all ages, assuming they understand this is fantasy. The story flows and is deftly written. Etty learns to judge a person's intent by their actions, not just accepting what she is told by others as pure fact. It is a quick read and leaves you hungry for more, so perfectly done.
Cover: I struggle to take books with cartoon covers seriously, but it’s cute.
Formatting: Clean!
Characters: Inconsistent at times; a good content editor could help with this.
Overall: It’s suuuper cliché; chapter after chapter, another redundant phrase or question to kick things off. Due to the slow pace, I didn’t make it all the way through. I might’ve appreciated this more when I was 8-10 years old. :)
I read this book from our library (where I work in the youth area). This was a fantasy book involving witches and vampires and is the first in the series. I enjoyed the book and it was a quick read. This is in our young teen section and doesn't have anything I would consider inappropriate in it.
If it were possible this book deserves an infinite amount of stars for the pure astounding satisfaction between these covers. My favorite fact about this book is that the name of Henrietta's mother, felicity, Is also a synonym for happiness which is the exact way how you will feel after you have reading this fabulous book cover to cover!
Etty is loyal and determined and so relatable...well, maybe not the whole vampire hunting thing. She tries so hard to protect those she loves and it just makes me adore her as a person. Was she harsh on Dimi? She was but I also like that she began to see him as more than.
Incredible first book in the series, a great fun story with amazing characters, the first book gets you introduced to the different characters and who they are , easy to read book, really enjoyed it cannot wait to read the rest of the series and find out more about the different characters and where they go in the story
I did not expect me to enjoy this book but I found the plot was well done and does not dwell too long on things. I found the characters well written and explored. It kept me guessing and it did not go the way that I thought that it would go, especially at the end.
A nice adventure book for young adults who want to play with witches and vampires. An easy read that is sure to be the beginning of a long series of books about the adventures of Etty Steele Vampire hunter.
