After her father murders her mother, Elle Carroway moves into the foster care system with her younger sister. Sinking deep into depression, Elle’s only relief comes from reading books under the trees outside. But when an intriguing boy named Eryk Rylander appears in her backyard, Elle discovers a new way of looking at her problems. According to Eryk, mental illness is caused by parasites called Charmers. Eryk offers to show Elle how to become a Mystic—a creature with enchanting powers that can remove parasitic Charmers. With her depression worsening daily, will Elle be able to leave her baby sister alone in the foster care system, to become a Mystic and get her Charmer removed?
Elle has grown up with an abusive father and has endured most of the pain in order to protect her younger sister, Emmy. After watching her father murder her mother and himself, Elle is placed into a foster home alongside her sister. While in foster care, Elle meets a charming boy named Eryk who shows her a whole new world where all of her pain can be taken away. Eryk explains to Elle that she is indwelled with a Charmer, which lives inside of her and causes her anxiety, depression, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts. Attempting to save her life, Eryk takes her into the world of Mystics where she must decide to go through the removal process or not. I liked this book because of the creative approach it took to show a strong character overcoming her struggles. I also admire the lengths Elle went to protect her sister, which plays on my emotions because I would also do anything to protect my sister. I think this book would definitely appeal to teenage girls who may be struggling with the same things as Elle. I think this would show them that, even though there are no real Mystics or Charmers, there are still people who can help them find purpose and meaning to their lives.
the most beautiful metaphor for dealing with different mental health issues! i love the creative voice the author has and can’t wait to see what else they publish in the future!
