A reunion with her billionaire boss is irresistible in this steamy office romance from Yahrah St. John.
Mixing business and pleasure burned her once. Now the man who broke her heart wants her back…
Maya Richardson can’t believe she’s even entertaining rich businessman Ayden Stewart’s offer to return as his assistant, no matter how generous the compensation. He’d broken his “no office affair” policy once and lost his best assistant. But now he claims to need Maya Richardson back…at any price. Caving in to his demands, she takes the job.
Maya tells herself the years apart have cooled their chemistry. So why are they breaking rule number one again…and again? Ayden still makes her want what she can never have—real love. Will it be different this time? The future of her heart is on the line.
Yahrah St. John is the International author of forty two books. When she’s not at home crafting one of her sexy romances with compelling heroes and feisty heroines with a dash of family drama, St. John can be found in the kitchen cooking one of her gourmet meals discovered on the Food Network for her husband. Or this thrill-seeking junky can be found traveling the globe seeking out her next adventure.

Ayden and Maya both work together and they slept together one night which ended their working relationship. Several years go by and Ayden is in a bind and needs Maya to help him out. With the way this book was setup I was expecting an angst filled story. Sadly, I didn’t get that with this book. I liked Maya but she was such a pushover. She let everyone walk over her from Adyen to her own family members. I’m also getting tired of reading books that use sex to fix all the couples problems. For example,
Female Lead: “I want marriage, babies, the white picket fence. I deserve nothing but the best.”
Male Lead: “You’re right but I can’t give it to you and you are incredible and deserve nothing but the best but it won’t be from me
But we can still have sex.
Ugh.
This really NEEDS stop. He doesn’t respect you enough for a real relationship but you’re good enough for casual sex?! I’m also tired of the male leads treating the women badly and they don’t even have to work hard for trust to be earned back. They just show up a few weeks later with some lame ass apology and all is forgiven. We need to do better! Women know your worth!
This was my first time reading this author and honestly I’m not sure if I will be continuing with this series. I didn’t connect to the couple or feel their chemistry while reading this book.
This book does contain mentions of cancer, aggressive treatment, and fear of parent death.
The Basics:
In typical Romance fashion, this is narrated in third person POV, alternating between Maya and Ayden.
Ayden is CEO of his own investing firm and he's in need of a new assistant. Or his old assistant, as it were. Maya quit five years ago after the two slept together and Ayden acted like it never happened. Ayden wants her back and promises things will stay strictly professional. Too bad their attraction is stronger than ever.
My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed At the CEO's Pleasure. It's a second chance, workplace, billionaire Romance and each element works quite well with each other. Maya and Ayden are also both dealing with their estranged families which is affecting their ability to get their own relationship on track.
My favorite part of At the CEO's Pleasure actually was their inevitable breakup, which is not something I say often. It felt realistic and not forced. It's a culmination of everything that these two people are going through and I loved how Maya just lets it all out. She tells Ayden exactly how she's feeling about his inability to commit to her. She knows she deserves more and she won't settle. I nearly cheered! This was the kick in the pants that Ayden needed to set aside his pride and get his familial affairs in order to move on with his life.
At the CEO's Pleasure is a very quick and pleasant read. The characters are likeable and believable, and I was definitely cheering for them to fix past hurts and move on together.
4 stars. Loved this. Easily could’ve been a five star read for me but it was a little too repetitive, especially in Ayden’s point of view. Other than that this had a lot of things that I absolutely love. A second chance romance, work place romance, emotionally stunted hero, a heroine who really comes into her own, angst, family drama, and a steamy romance. It was all well done. The writing was good, it was paced well and it was so entertaining from beginning to end.
I liked and empathized with both characters. Ayden and his childhood trauma and Maya and everything she had been through with her sister and her mother. They are such damaged people but they’re more than that. I think between the two Maya had the better development but Ayden goes through some solid development as well especially at the end. Their chemistry was amazing and their romance is an emotional rollercoaster but so satisfying in the end.
I cannot wait to continue on with the series as it follows Ayden’s younger siblings and I did like them here. I’m sure I’ll enjoy them just as much as I did this one.
A male CEO has indispensable female assistants who leave one after the other, and he decides to ask a lady he crossed the line with previously to come back and work for him. She needs a good salary quickly as her mother is ill so she accepts. However - you saw this coming - the man can't keep his hands off her. I would have liked him better if he had kept his promise to be on a strictly work basis, and I did think the lady should have reminded him of this, because after all she does have the upper hand if he needs her that badly.
The lady has far more personal and social issues to contend with than the gentleman, which is often the case because men tend to exclude all but work and one or two close relationships from their lives.
This is an adult romance. I did enjoy the story, and would read more from this author, but please don't try to model your professional life on this couple. I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley and Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.
Ok, this DNF is definitely on me. By which I mean - most the other DNFs (OBVIOUSLY it's subjective to degrees) - but the other ones IMO there are major plot/characterization errors or issues, etc...
In this case -it's me.
First of all ... I love the "I must get back what I lost" boss/~secretary romances. But ... here, the guy was a jackass. I liked that his friend called him on it.
BUT WORSE. Like ...ugh. The heroine's little sister - WHO APPARENTLY SHE HALF RAISED HERSELF - cheated with the heroine's then boyfriend. And the sister and ex boyfriend got married and had a kid. Heroine has been estranged from them for 5 years - WITH GOOD REASON. She's back for her [niece's?] christening ... because she's a good person and the bigger person. ~Everyone in her family apparently just expected her to ~get over it ... BUT THEY NEVER APOLOGIZED.
😒 And then her asshole mom - ugh. UGH. Apparently has stage 3 pancreatic cancer - (she's also been estranged from mom because mom treats her like shit, always has, blames her for everything and favors her sister so...) Like irl I get dealing with family no mater what. But at least in fiction? Fuck that toxic shit. And hello yes I get it - I've got a lot of issues/especially feel some type of way - and I'm like "yes hello I can and do live this, I don't need or want to read about it in my fiction/leisure/pleasure reading." BUT ANYWAY. Heroine's brother in law - WHO WAS HER EX BOYFRIEND WHO CHEATED ON HER- and the way she found out was she was going to bring him dinner one night AND CAUGHT HER SISTER IN BED WITH THE GUY. ... BiL is all "oh hey your mom has cancer - what are you going to do about it" -by which he obviously means care for/provide for them/her.
And ... yeah I read between 10-15% and nope.
Sorry, no. I'm sure it's a great book - but nope. Not for me. I want to kick the hero in the kneecap, and I want to kick the sister and BiL in the junk.
Ruggedly raw chemistry! With the first book in The Stewart Heirs series, Yahrah St. John makes her Harlequin Desire debut and her voice shines! The story line grabbed my attention from the start and the characters brought the story to life on the pages. There were a tad too many plot twists trying to steal the scene here and there, and an almost raunchy feel in a couple of spots, but overall a really entrenching read. I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to more from the Stewarts!
When Ayden Stewart finds himself in need of an assistant, he can think of no one better than the one he let slip through his fingers five years ago. Temptation led to a night of passion and the fallout had Maya leaving her job. Now he'll promise her just about anything to get her to return to the company fold!
Maya Richardson never expected to get to live out her most secret fantasy of a night spent with the guy she'd been crushing on for years, but that's exactly what happened ... but the way he reacted the next morning broke her heart. Her life was enough of a roller coaster at the time without adding awkward days at the office to the list, so she found another job. Now Ayden wants her back, and she happens to need the ridiculous money he's promising her.
Bleah on the hero, who re-hired the heroine under the pretence of keeping it purely professional, then went on to have lots of sexy times with her. That trope can be done well, but in this case, I never really felt Ayden falling in love with her, or really having any interest in Maya beyond sexy times and catering to his needs. There's a point where he gets injured, and comes up with the brilliant idea of asking Maya (who at this point is really just his office assistant and not his girlfriend) to be his "caretaker". Bleah.
I liked Maya. I like how much she cares for her family, and how kind a person she is. But I really wish she was less of a pushover for Ayden. She clearly loves him from the very beginning, and so it was hard to see her agree to his ever-changing terms for their relationship, all of which were based on what he wanted/needed at the time. I loved when she finally stood up to him, fairly late in the book, and calls him out for basically reneging on their contract and using her, and honestly I was hoping she would just find someone better, who respected her from the start.
After all these years, he finally made a decision...
Maya was once Ayden Executive Assistant, but after one night together, he made a decision that lost Maya. Years later, Ayden needs Maya again and stops at nothing to get her back. Realizing how he feels about Maya, Ayden used that to get her to take of him when he needed. During that time, their relationship went to the next level and when they came back to work, Ayden again, made a bad decision. Ayden drove me crazy, he knew he wanted Maya and wouldn't get over his past hurts to be with her. Maya, had to work out her own issues and she did, but it was just the beginning and when Ayden couldn't make up his mind, she did it for him. I rooted for Maya to get everything she ever wanted because she deserved it, so when Ayden finally came to his senses, I was happy. This was a great read and I loved the chemistry between Ayden and Maya!!! Excellent read!!
Maya worked for Ayden 5 years ago as his assistant but left after they gave into their passions and Ayden was unable to acknowledge his feelings. Five years later, Ayden needs Maya to come back to work for him again since his current assistant is not returning to work after her maternity leave. Once Maya finds out about her mother's condition, she decides to accept Ayden's job offer despite her feelings for him. Once they start working together again, it's not long before the chemistry and passion rises to the surface. Both Maya and Ayden must deal with issues from their past in order to come together as a couple. Reunited love is one of my favorite storylines and Ms. St.John did a wonderful job with this book. I'm looking forward to reading Fallon's book which is next in the series.
It's really sad that Henry Stewart abandoned Ayden but chose to be a father to Fallon and Dane and I'm glad that Ayden got successful on his own without his father's help. I think Ayden was waiting for an excuse to seek out Maya because he was in love with her because he shared more of himself with her than anyone. I understand forgiveness but if I was Maya, I would have still Raven and Thomas at a distance. Raven was trifling for stealing Thomas from her own sister and actually married him. Maya and Raven's mom Sophia was wrong for taking sides and treating Maya like an outcast.
This was a struggle to finish for me. I'm not at all fond of alphahole main characters and Ayden was that times ten. Also, not every story needs to reconcile the toxic family relationships to have a happy ending. Maya didn't have to be the bigger person; she was the victim and her entire family showed no remorse. She had no independent thoughts and didn't stick up for herself the entire book. I'm angry that this was labeled a romance because there was no love. Maya didn't even love herself. That was the saddest part of all. Never did she put herself first. She was really just a device used for everyone else to achieve their desires.

Another great read. When will men learn, you can't run from love. Ayden is a self made billionaire who thought he would never fall in love because of what his father and stepdad did. But Maya comes in and changes all that although he fights it, so much so that he pushed her away breaking her heart more so than her sister and ex-boyfriend ever did. Only to be reacquainted with the man she always loved but this time Maya isn't running like she did years before. She makes Ayden realize she's worth it and if he can't realize it she's going with her life without him.
If anyone wants an example of exactly the book that fits the HQ Desire line, this is a good example. If you like a hero who doesn't take no for an answer, and knows exactly what he wants (the heroine), then you'll love this book.
Personally, I found there were a couple of times when the hero pushed a bit too much for a yes after the heroine had said no, and then she folded and said yes. It blurs the line of consent for me.
But I do enjoy when a hero who has it all falls completely for his lover and can't live without them. The ending of this book packs an emotional punch.
Ms. St. John never disappoints! This was an excellent read. After heartbreaks, betrayal and a broken spirit, Maya stood up for what she not only wanted, but deserved! Ayden was finally able to let go of his issues, see what was in front of him, acknowledge it and find some happiness! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to Fallon’s story! 💜
I couldn’t finish this book. I got halfway through and it still wasn’t offering anything to keep me engaged.
Maya was waaay to much of a pushover for this to be any good. I felt the story hinges on her whet it would be worth the while, and she didn’t deliver.
She did too much thinking about what she wouldn’t do just to do it two seconds later. It was too little angst for me and the passion was more of wisps of air.
Myah worked for Ayden years ago, but quit after they hooked up and Ayden shut her out. Now Ayden is back asking Myah to come back and work for him. He offers her a huge bonus that she cannot refuse, but makes him promise they won’t repeat previous mistakes.
I will be the first to admit that both Ayden and Myah both have their issues. Myah doesn’t stand up for herself as much as I would like and Ayden is a little too alpha-hole for my personal taste. I mean at one point he says he needs a “nursemaid” and obviously Myah is the top candidate. He then proceeds to tell her to “run along” to get her stuff. Right then I would have said “excuse me”, regardless of past history and present circumstances! Eventually, Myah realizes she is much more deserving and Ayden has to step up! My favorite part of the book has to be their whole Jamaica trip. Their chemistry is fire! I REALLY liked this book and I can’t wait to read the rest in the series!
Although I thoroughly enjoyed this story, I did not fully commit 100% to the couple's relationship. The fact that they both had feelings for one another yet chose to be closed-mouthed, that part was typical of romance novels. One encounter five years prior, and they still had feelings had to be a powerful force. I wanted to believe them. Overall, the story was good quick read.
This is my first book by this author. I have read a Harlequin in decades, lol. Yep, this is a steamy will he, won't he CEO vs the Office Assistant. Ayden needed a definite smack with the way he couldn't make up his mind about Maya. He was not always kind and kept giving her mixed messages. Maya needed a bit more of a backbone with the way she let him play her. This story reminded me of how I use to devour these stories back in the day.
Ayden and Maya compromised their working relationship when they slept together. Five years later, the pair are reunited and the chemistry is just as strong. But both struggle with family issues that could deter them from opening themselves up to true love. Luckily, their bond is strong and we enjoy their journey to HEA. Thank you Netgalley!
Deep seeded Family issues almost cost Ayden the love of his life. Yet through introspection and self determination he was able to set aside pride. Maya the assistant comes into her own after personal experience of betrayal. You'll rejoice in the love and the coming together of a Family
I immensely enjoy the books written by this author and this one is no exception. Maya and Ayden have a tense relationship that crossed boundaries. While she is ready for marriage, babies and picket fences he is so caught up in his past that he is incapable of love or commitment.
I read this book because it was recommended by another of my favorite authors. I was not disappointed. This was a great story with interesting characters. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Ayden and Mia both had a parent who had no clue the impression they were leaving on the children. Glad they found their way through it took years but they made it. Forgiveness is not easy.
This is a good story about how sometimes holding onto things can hold you back from moving forward in life. You never know what you're missing out on. I definitely enjoyed reading this book. I would love to read more about these characters.
Ten Year's of being afraid to express his love because he didn't want to be rejected but Myra was having none of that this time she love me with a 'll of you are nothing.
It was okay. i enjoyed how Maya was moving forward and taking control of her happiness knowing she deserved and was worthy of love. I'd recommended this book to friends.
Maya knew her worth and refused to settle for anything less than that. It took Ayden a long time to get on the same page as Maya. He let fear paralyze himself.
