The one man he wants, is the only man he can’t have.
Azra, known as the Shadow King to both his enemies and his allies, needs a mate. Onyx dragon law dictates that a King with an heir may not be overthrown, important if Azra wants any chance of winning the war against the three neighboring dragon tribes. He knows who he wishes he could mate with, the too young, too sweet, too naive Elby. Azra refuses to listen to his inner dragon’s insistence that Elby is his fated mate. He’ll simply have to choose another. He decides to hold a masquerade ball with the express purpose of finding a mate to make an heir with.
Despite being forbidden from attending the ball, Elby sneaks in, impressed with himself for disobeying the formidable King and for succeeding on getting inside and snagging a mask before anyone spots him. The King has acted as Elby’s guardian for his entire life, saving Elby from the cruel ways of their people, but also sheltering him from the entire world. He’s excited to have a wild night, and over the moon when the King dances with him, singling him out over all the others.
When the lights are out, true love finds a way.
After a passionate night neither of them will forget, the masks are removed and both are shocked. Azra can’t believe after all his attempts to keep Elby at bay, he’d still managed to single out and impregnate the one man who was meant to be off limits. His concern for Elby’s health is nearly shadowed by his fear that Elby may be so much more than he seems.
The onyx dragons live surrounded by darkness, their ways are violent and living among them is a daily battle, but they all fear one thing above all else. The return of the Dark One, a mythical being that is said to return only to wreak havoc, mayhem, and destruction. They say he chooses a vessel, consuming the unlucky creature from the inside. Azra would love to continue to believe that the Dark One is just a fairytale, except, he sees the changes in his sweet mate.
Azra must delve into legends and find out how to save his mate, before the neighboring tribes attack and before Avia, an ancient enemy, unveils her final plan to destroy them all.
The Onyx Dragons are the most feared of the Dragon clans but they are really just like the other clans. They try to sustain life on their island surrounded by shadows that cloak their lives in mystery.
The one person that you can't have is the one that is your fated mate. That is the predicament that King Azra and Elby face in this last installment of The Jeweled King's Curse series.
****I received this ARC from the author for my honest opinion****
Why do I do this to myself? I’ve never been able to finish a Kiki Burelli book. But the blurb was interesting and I was in the mood for something along these lines. But argh....why do I do this to myself???? 🥺
It started off well enough.... but barely halfway through, I remember why I can’t finish any Kiki Burelli books. Her style just isn’t my cup of tea ☹️ I don’t even really know why 🤷🏻♀️
4.5 stars rounded up, because I love this series and it was a great way to bring closure to things that had started all the way back in book 1! Kiki has created a unique world with different dragons that live in very different lands, and in this story we finally get to learn about the Onyx dragons!
Azra is the king of the onyx dragons and is in need of an heir to secure his own safety. He hosts a ball to find a mate pronto, and I always love it when masks are involved so their identities are unknown. Elby is who Azra really wants, but Azra views him as someone he can't have - so of course, Elby sneaks into the ball and make sure that he gets to be with Azra!
In this story, we have the final attempt of the golden grandmother to win, but Azra works with Crius (who was Elby's promised mate originally - don't worry, they're the best of friends) and the kings from the previous stories to make sure that she and the Dark One will not win. I don't want to say too much to give things away, but there is plenty of action, romance, a baby, and some drama to please fans of this series. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was how the story ended at the 90% of my kindle!
Now we just need a spin off, and the first book should be for Crius!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a way to end a series. The mythical Dark One makes an appearance but it doesn't turn out the way it was hoped. And this was much better. Sweet, shy Elby. Sheltered his whole life. He lost his parents young. And Azra has basically been his guardian the whole time. Azra feared for Elby. Not really knowing why. But there's more to it. Azra feels things toward Elby he's not supposed to. He wants Elby as a mate. But Elby is engaged to his nephew. But one fateful night at a masked ball, he feels his mate, but doesn't know it's Elby. He hopes and wishes, but doesn't know. Elby knows, however. And his dreams are coming true. He never felt for Crius what he does for Azra, and mating with him feels so right. But the masks come off and confusion and misunderstandings ensue. And it's going to take time to fix it. In the meantime, Elby's acting weirder and weirder and it's time to find out why. Elby. Damn that poor sweet boy. Being used and manipulated and not even knowing. Things are happening within him that are way off but he's figuring the pregnancy. He's been changing and Azra and Crius are scared and worried. I would be too. But having been sheltered most of his life, people don't really understand that Elby can be tough. He's smart and strong. Yeah, he may be a little guy but he's still good. And the sacrifice that happens shows how good he really is. As big of a hardass as Azra was, I love how gentle he is. His main concern is always Elby. Even as the risk of his own child's life, he'd rather save Elby. Elby has taught him to look at things so differently. To try peace instead of war. He feels like he owes his life to Elby. The changes finally being made to make everything better will take time. The problem is Avia is still running amok. In order to make it right, they have to stop her but they have to figure out how. It's a page turner. Makes you very anxious to see how it's going to end. Especially when things start really happening. Good book and good series.
Just when it seems that the Golden Grandmother can't get more we evil, she does. It's amazing how cruel she and Bozna were to Elby for pretty much his entire life. But I love how fitting both of their fates were in this series.
I have to wonder, was the Dark One always set to rise at this time, or was it engineered by his "servants"? I loved Crios' description of his and Elby's relationship; that all they had was live between them, as a reason why they would never work as a couple. It was awesome to see their friendship remain strong, despite the stressors put on it in the Shadowlands. It was also great to see that despite his upbringing, and the trading that I'm sure Bozna tried to instill, Elby never actually wanted anything about the Dark One in his life. I'm sure that determination helped him to make the awesome choices that he did in this book.
This was an excellent ending to a really fun series!
Good I received this story by the author and this is my honest opinion. This is the 4th and final book of the dragon series and rounds it off nicely. I was looking forward to this one and Azra and Elby was a pleasure to read. They had great contrasting personalities but we did see other aspects of this which was underneath and which I enjoyed the insight. Great characterization with emotion and a nice story.
Elby is a young dragon that has loved his guardian from a far since for ever. He sneaks into a masquerade Ball and tricks the King. Then there is a darkness that threatens the newlyweds. This books ties all the loose strings and love conquers all ! A must read !
4* The Onyx Dragon’s Accidental Mate is the fourth book in The Jeweled King’s Curse series by Kiki Burrelli. This is the first one of the series that I have read, and it can be read as a standalone. Will be going back to read the others in the series though as I really enjoyed this installment!
This book follows King Azra, his nephew Crius, and Crius’s fiancé / Azra’s ward, Elby. Elby grew up with Crius and sees him as a best friend rather than a fiancé. Azra has been Elby’s caretaker for years but yearns for him secretly. Crius is the son of Azra’s brother who was killed during an attack he led on another dragon clan causing uncertainty between the clans prior to the start of this book. Azra decides to hold a masquerade ball for his kingdom to lift everyone’s spirits and to find himself a mate as Onyx dragon law states that he cannot be killed if he is expecting an heir. He is actively seeking a way to defeat the other three dragon clans and sees this as one way to cover his back within his own kingdom. Elby sneaks in to the ball unbeknownst to Azra and finds himself mated to him and pregnant before the ball is over. Though this becomes the least of their worries.
(Possible spoilers below!)
The story of the Dark One’s return has been told for centuries and has become somewhat of a myth throughout the kingdoms. Each passing week of Elby’s pregnancy, he changes a little bit more – some of his words become sharper, some of his actions become more concerning, and his friendship with the shadow beasts truly scares both Azra and Crius. I really liked seeing this part of the story and especially the ending! All I can say is “Go Elby!”
Now I want to know what happens to Crius though! Is he going to get a book? Does he find himself when he goes out searching?
Shadow King, Azra, needs a heir to protect his reign as the King of the Shadowlands dragons. Since birth for their kind is rough and birthrates low, a king with a heir is expected to be untouched by assassination attemps. His Dragon and heart yearn for one man he can not have, so he holds a masked ball to find a mate. He finds an intriguing young man who reminds him of his love and claims him as his mate... Later realizing it is truly the man he always wanted who had snuck into the ball, Elby. Now, the King has what he always wanted, but fears that it may destroy his true dates mate. Meanwhile, the Dragon kings are at the edge of a war breading out, unless they can find a way to peace. The fairytales Dark One seems intent to take over someone's body and destroy their world, and The Golden Grandmother Avia is hiding in wait to see the destruction she craves. What a wild ride this series has delivered... And this fourth and final book in the Jeweled Kong's Curse series. All the books are entertaining and amazing with great characters you fall in love with... Plenty of action, emotion and sexy times. This book delivers everything the previous ones did and adds it own lunch with adorable but dangerous shadow beasts who love our Elby and act like his pets and protectors. I love Ninja! I received an Advanced Readers Copy and am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
The Onyx Dragon's Accidental Mate is the forth book of „The Jeweled King's Curse“ series.
King Azra is in love with Elby like forever but doesnt want to subject him to all the hardship and dangers of being the kings mate so he encourages Elbys engangement with his best friend and is determindet to find someone else to give him a heir to secure his reign. To bad he didnt expect Elby to sneak into the ball where hes supposed to find his mate, and unknowingly chooses him.
Elby is such a sweet one, i was instantly in love with his character. Having always been sheltered and tendet to, he has a very sweet innocence and naivity to him as well as a big kind heart and a huge crush on king Azra. When he thinks his dream of being with Azra finally comes true, it is not what it seems. Both of them have a lot of stuff to figure out to finally find their happiness.
The book is well written with nice character settings. While it can definitely be read as standalone ( i myself still have not read the first 3 books yet) i think it might still be beneficial to read them out in order as youll get more familiar with some of the characters and probaly will have an easier time adapting to the world the onix dragons live in, as it felt kinda new to me.
Great shifter romance! Surprisingly dark and menacing in tone, especially in the beginning when I wasn't even completely sure if Azra was the good guy or a less blond, more dragon-y Joffrey Baratheon.
Azra is all about making the tough decisions for his people and although he's very powerful, he's also very isolated and alone. He yearns for Elby, his mate, but is determined to prevent Elby from sharing in the doom and gloom that is his own fate in life. The ultimate self-sacrificing leader.
Elby stands out amongst the other onyx dragons, because of his sweet and sunny nature. So naturally he's the perfect match for Azra. Two halves of the same whole:-) I loved the scene with the big misunderstanding that allowed them to finally find each other!
There's a constant threat looming over the dragon tribes... the evil Dark One. There are several hints along the way about where and how this evil overlord will return to destroy everything in his path. All the while our heroes are working feverishly to try and stop him...to no avail of course. The resurrection of the Dark One was magnificently done! Bloody, cruel, awful and seemingly unstoppable. I loved how those final scenes played out! Great plot twist!
I also adored the friendship and strong connection between Elby and Crius. Crius is a very interesting character in his own right. I would love it if he got his own story!
The Shadow King, Azra, needs an heir so that there will be no possibility he is overthrown as the dragon Shadow King, but the man he wants most and is also his fated mate Azra deems to young to innocent and to precious to be put through the dangers of the pregnancy and being his mate. Azra decides instead to throw a masquerade ball to find a suitable replacement for the man he loves, Elby.
Forbidden to be at the ball Elby defies his King and the man he loves, Azra, and sneaks in anyway. Azra is taken in by the man in the mask that so reminds him of his beloved Elby and takes the stranger as his mate. Only to find after the mating it actually is Elby. When Elby starts acting odd Azra starts to wonder if he has somehow become the vessel for the Dark One's return.
The world created for the book is a somewhat unique one. I really enjoyed the storyline. I loved all the characters. The angst is medium. The love is high. Definitely made my rereads pile.
This was a really good book. I was not sure going in because I had just finished the 3rd book a couple of weeks before. You see this different side of Azra then any of the other books. I felt like the other kings were seeing a king that just wanted war and that was not the case at all. Seeing how the golden grandmother was acting through out the series you could tell that she was up to something but, at least for me, I could not tell what it was. Which is good because most of the time I can tell with just little hints through out. I liked how Azra was trying to protect Elby but at the same time I wish he told Elby a little bit more. However, like I said, I liked him protecting Elby. I also wish that Elby told Azra what he was going through.
Overall I liked the book and is something that I would go back to read another time. I think that it wrapped up some questions that I did have.
I say this every time I read a new book from Kiki Burrelli but it continues to be true. This book is a stand alone and yet still closes one story arc around a villian from the Jewelled Dragons series. That would be one of my reasons not to read this as such. However, it is a way to have a window into her shifter mpreg world of books. If you haven't yet read any of the books from this extensive world you won't be at any disadvantage. I would encourage you to deleve in. Since I'm sure you'll enjoy it, stay and explore it's a beautiful series in an amazing world.
FYI: I received this book as an ARC for my honest review. I also have KU so I don't see this making a difference one way or the other.
Dragons, mates, dark spirits, betrayal, honor, complexity, love and hope all live in this amazing world. The world building was awesome! The story-line had me hooked from the blurb and i couldn't put the book down.
Azra and Elby are wonderful as they learn to love each other. It was really interesting to see how the author developed Elby's character! I loved the care and gentleness that Azra showed to Elby.
Such strength of character for both men and the story will keep you enjoying each special twist and turn. This is such a great final story in the Jeweled King's Curse series. I loved the ending!!!!!
i am looking forward to the new series!
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my review
As always, Kiki's story has a power to makes me feel the same with the character...I can feel Elby's anger, his jealousy, also Azy's pain when he saw Elby with his nephew....hiks
I think it will take me at least 3 days to finish, but damn! I finished it in 2 days :3 the story was easy to understand, but if you want to completely understand the story, you have to read the other series. The sexy scene was hot but not as hot as Finding Finn (lol, I really love this one). After all, I just can say that I can't stop to wanting more and more, this one is really good! Good job Kiki! Thanks for made such a good story :")
THE ONYX DRAGON’S ACCIDENTAL MATE by @kikiburrelli
Whoa! A stunning conclusion to this wonderful series. This one was the darkest of them all (possession anyone?) and that really worked. What do you expect from the Shadow King’s story. But Azra and Elby ended up being just what the other needed to fight their demons. So sweet with some spice. I do have some questions like: When can we have a bonus chapter about one of the teas all the mates have together? Is Ninja their pet now? Do the dragons go on to have more children? Will we ever see Crius’s love story?
This is really a fascinating well-written dragon shifter romance which I enjoyed reading. It filled with twists & turns, friendship, determination, action, danger, enemies, anger, jealousy, romance, love and a few steamy scenes. The story-line is fairly suspenseful, well-thought out and written. The characters are well-developed with individual personalities and entwine well, they react with varying emotional feelings to the situations they find themselves in. I really would recommend this book. “I received a complimentary copy, and this is my honest opinion”
Rating: 4 stars This was my favorite in the series. I wasn’t sure I was going to like Azra and in fact I did not like him in the beginning. But I did warm up to him over the course of the book. I warmed up to him more that I did Vale in the previous book. I loved Elby and his best friend Crius. I would love to read a spin-off book about Crius. Although I thought the author ended the series well, I had a couple of niggles plot wise. Overall, I really enjoyed the series and this book in particular.
The writing remains okay, and the plot remains barely acceptable, and the characters remain flat and cliche, and the drama remains mediocre, and really if you read the previous books you know what you’re in for. And if you haven’t read the previous books, there’s a preview of the first book in here, at the ...very end of the last book. Where it makes ...sense?
Anyway, I suppose you won’t get more out of the book if you’ve read the first three than you would if you have not read the first three, but that’s only because there’s not much to be gotten out of them in the first place.
This book was provided to me for an unbiased review. This is the 4th and final installment of the Jeweled Dragons. I love Kiki's world building, and I could live there, happily forever. I truly enjoyed this series on the whole. Part 4 felt a little rushed to me, but beyond that, a work of art. Kiki delivers excellent reading, and stellar characters. Hope you'll give this series a try!
I loved the story. I thought it was very well written, with a nice steady pace to keep the story moving along. Elby and Azra characters were likable and made you want to know more about them. I loved how the story played out. The two characters had chemistry. I hope you enjoy the story as much as I did. Will be stalking the author’s book shelf for a long time. Thank you for sharing your book with us.
Wonderful finish to a wonderful series! Sweet strong Alby brings the dark Onyx King back to the light of love and peace. Azra fought so hard to keep pain and suffering from his young mate but finally couldn't stay away and finally gives in to his desires. Together they bring peace to the dragon wars and get rid of the darkness that has been consuming the dragons in this series. Thank you for the arc.
Elby is like the perfect friend we all have, kind, sweet, loving always there to lend a helping hand. That is until he is not, that one day that all the sudden he turns cold, cruel and emotion less.
I loved this series, but more then that I really enjoyed this book. The imagination and ability to spin this tail really shows the pure talent that Kiki Burrelli has in spades.
A great ending to a wonderful series. Azra and Elby are wonderful characters who go so well together. I love Elby's sweetness and innocence to Azra's strong and fierce personality. I really like how loving and protective Azra is of Elby, and how he actually listens and takes into account Elby's opinions and feelings. Lots of action and drama in this story that will keep you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Finally, the golden grandmother (super evil) was dealt with the way she should have been a while ago. Elby was a sweetheart (perfect for a dark entity to possess) and his mate, King Azra, was perfect for him even though he was a bit older. The story was compelling and the ending was heartwarming. I really liked how Ninja (the shadow beast) stuck by his side. Adorable. I definitely recommend this series for lovers of dragon shifters.
