Disaster strikes and innocents die as police sniper Rick Munro is plagued by a first-call jinx. As his career takes off, he must overcome his rookie mistakes, and keep his team members safe.
When Munro returns to TACT as a newly promoted lieutenant, the jinx torments him still. He must contend with team members' rival agendas around every turn. Munro finds himself in a battle he can't escape as corruption and death unfold around him.
Who can he trust? Will Munro break the streak or will it destroy everything he believes in?
Note: I received a review copy from the publisher.
Rick Munro is a Police Officer, working as a sniper. Munro finds himself entangled in a ‘jinx’ that plagues him, causing disaster and death to innocent people at every incident he is a part of. Even after a promotion to lieutenant in the TACT department, this ‘jinx’ continues to follow him, and Munro continues to try to out run this curse that could destroy all he has worked for. Unless of course, he can find a way to stop it himself.
I liked this book. This book is part of a series and this is book one in the series. The plot evolves rapidly, and its action packed with lots going on to keep the reading wanting to know what happens next. The book is well written. It is heavily based on dialogue and for this type of plot, the heavy dialogue worked well in moving the story along, and keeping things heated and interesting.
My favorite characters are Rick Munro and Loretta. I liked these two best as I connected with them the most. I especially liked Loretta’s story. She has a darker past, but throughout the book, you see that she is trying to change her life around, despite still ending up in situations that implicate her.
I think that Loretta’s story teaches a good lesson, in that it is important to give others second changes, and to not judge others by their pasts.
I also really liked Jan’s character, and I kept rooting for her to make it to the TACT team to be the first women on that team!
While the book is action packed, and there is a lot going on with the plot, I did feel that the character development was lacking for some of the secondary characters. I did not connect with any other character as a result. I wish I had, as I do place a lot of importance on characters and their development throughout the story. I am hoping that in book 2, more of a connection to the secondary characters are made.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. The plot was interesting, and well constructed, its fast paced, and despite the lack of connection to some characters, I enjoyed the read. I recommend this book and think you will love this book if you enjoy reading books about police officers, and the daily struggles they go through, and of course, the good cop versus bad cop concept!
I am looking forward to seeing where the next book takes its reader.
The Jinx is a suspense novel written by Ernest Lancaster, and is the first book of a trilogy in the Memphis MO Series.
The main character is police sniper Rick Munro. He values integrity and works hard to protect himself and his colleagues. But no matter how hard he works, he is constantly distracted by a first-call jinx. He cannot shake the feeling that his first operation at any rank will result in disaster. The writer’s own experience as an officer creates an action-packed, quickly developing plot that takes us on a wild ride.
Lancaster wastes no time letting us know how heavy the curse is for Rick. The book starts with an operation in progress. Rick becomes distracted by an image of his long-dead partner who died in an accident during Rick’s first hot call as a rookie. His current task is the first with his observer Jan Luke. This operation is only the beginning of Rick’s streak of bad luck.
We go alongside Rick on various operations and are taken through a resume of mistakes as he works as a TACT lieutenant and trainee. His bad luck catches up with him and he soon finds himself without a job.
Rick starts to build a relationship with Loretta during his time off. But just as they become comfortable with their new normal, Rick gets a call from the police department. They want him back. And his first assignment when he returns is a big one – he’ll be serving his first dignitary detail as lieutenant and will be responsible for protecting the president.
Will the jinx remain with Rick during his new assignment, or will the support and reassurance from Loretta be enough to overcome it?
The Jinx is a great book and is easy to read quickly. With a large cast of characters, any reader is sure to find someone who is like them. I look forward to the next installment of this series.
The Jinx by ex-policeman Ernest Lancaster is a fine book that tells it like it is, from patrol to Special Weapons And Tactics. Lancaster successfully delves into the hearts and minds of the cops who risk their lives daily on every tour. Nobody but a former policeman/woman can illuminate how challenging and precarious it is to be the police. The Jinx takes place in Memphis, Tennesee, home to drunk tourists, drug dealers, and sex workers. Sgt. Rick Munro is a sniper for the Memphis Police. His job is to kill violent felons when no other alternative is available. He takes on additional duties, training candidates for S.W.A.T. and playing politics with the brass who want zero crime and no citizen complaints. Unfortunately, these objectives are incompatible, and Rick pays the price for walking this delicate tightwire. Along the way, we get an insider's view of the machinations of a big city police department and how justice is sometimes put on the back burner in favor of politics and power. The Jinx offers an illuminating view of today's law enforcement and what it takes to protect and serve.
As a native west Tennessean, I enjoyed reading about an area that is familiar to me. More than that, though, I enjoyed a story that juxtaposed characters from the seedy side of a city with those who are charged to protect and serve. We see that whichever side you fall into, there are people with high ethical standards and those who have none. The narrative creates the kind of tension that makes you want to see how it all ends. However, it's also the kind of book that makes you reluctant to turn the last page. I'm looking forward to this author's next book.
What could be better, a cop story written by a former cop?
I've had this book in my pile for too long. I don't know what took me so long to get to it, but I'm so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this look inside a police department, and outside of it, too. The police sniper, Rick Munro, engaged me right away, through his battles with his perceived jinx and into his love life. Great read!
This story describes the heroism and sacrifices of the women and men who dedicate their lives to protecting us. Lancaster tells an engrossing and suspenseful tale.
