Julia DeBarrioz has a new life-long fan. Her writing had me hooked from the first page, and I could not put the book down until I had devoured every line! Warning, spoilers below.
The world of Companera is beautifully detailed and rich, with a magical realism that really pulls you in. From the fascinating PCT, to the lycanthrope gangbangers to the medieval fealty system the vampires adhere to, the worldbuilding itself is so well-thought out and wonderfully logical that I found myself admiring the author's way of weaving the supernatural into the world we know.
One of my favorite parts of the novel is its handling of the issue of human trafficking in a really touching and empowering way. I love the way in which the fantasy elements of the story highlight real world issues in a thoughtful manner, and the author's passion for the setting of New Mexico and its culture is so refreshing in a genre that is over saturated with the same old tired tropes.
This brings me to the setting, which I found myself absolutely engrossed by. My favorite fantasy novels always involve stories that are deeply entrenched in where they are set on all levels, from plot, to history, to geography and culture, and DeBarrioz' Companera fits the bill. In this novel the setting is not just background or a pretty landscape, but comes to life as a character of its own from the adobe styled architecture, to the scent of desert rain, to the mysterious catacombs, I am in LOVE!
Another of my favorite (yes, another) aspects of the narrative is the vampires. I adore the way DeBarrioz has crafted her vampires; they're atmospheric, charming and downright seductive. Diego de Gama is swoon-worthy and is reminiscent of those old school vampires from classic literature that I love, simply mesmerizing!
This leads me to Dakota del Toro, a fantastic lead oozing with grit, wit and it. I really enjoyed reading the story through her perspective, her snappy dialogue and fiery personality never leaving me with a dull moment. Her personality in contrast with Diego is simply just perfect, and exactly that kind of fire and ice that I love in my romances.
This is the first book I've read in the Dakota del Toro series, and just like Dakota at the end of the novel, has me wanting so much more. I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series, and am very much looking forward to reading all future works by Julia DeBarrioz!
