Human. Male. From an obscure planet in the Milky Way Galaxy. Sci-fi novelist with a PhD in philosophy. Likes chocolates, Labradors, and zombies (not necessarily in that order). Werbeloff spends his days constructing thought experiments, while trying to muster enough guilt to go to the gym.

Absolutely brilliant, absolutely hilarious! Well, this is the starship that you really don't want to be on. But it is great fun to read about the woes of those who are, and I defy you to not feel a little icky at the descriptions of the rat stew. If you like scifi but also like a laugh, then this is the book for you. I suggest you read these books in order; there is no cliffhanger making you do so, but for maximum enjoyment it really would be be best.
I just got to say there are just so many lines in this book that standout I simply can’t name my favorite! Just WOW about the harvesting of tears! There needs to be a crown for the king of hypochondria. This character....he actually needs his own word to describe the hypochondria to the nth degree! And robot Margaret? Yes....she is stuff award winning horror films dream about. Totally not my normal genre but I just have to keep reading this. It’s just that intriguing and indescribable! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
A great read into the Anchora series. Book 2 is a good look at some of the main characters on the spaceship Anchora who left a dying Earth behind. The only person who didn't know about the space trip to leave everything and everyone on Earth is a identical twin of a Police Chief who's killed. The twin takes the dead ones spot. I am going to add that this story is also a good mystery too. Murder because Margaret needed a human body for parts. The woman was evil in my books tho. She was a cook for the ship and kept rat poison to rub on food served to people she didn't like. Good riddance to bad trash! A great story with twists and turns you won't see coming!
This is a great continuation of the Anchora series - the plot deepens as well as expands with new characters and some exciting plot developments. Margaret achieves all her goals and makes her presence known to the humans on board the ship, but she may not be the biggest threat to the success of this interstellar mission, after all. Werbeloff has always managed to come up with interesting ideas for future technologies, and this story does not disappoint. This book ends with a cliffhanger, and I plan to read volume 3 right away to find out what happens next.
the second book did not dissapoint at all the story has unbelievably been taken to new heights and i can not reccomend this series enough it is a true masterpiece of imagination and creation by the author now its time for the next book to see if possible how it could get any better
Werbeloff's second outing to the stars sees the hypochondriac, Nassas (masquerading as his dead brother Shelby) meeting his AI Jasmine for the first time (hilarious!), and getting all the information he needs from the ever-talkative-paraplegic-repository-of-knowledge-in-a-hoverchair, Randy. Nassas is in for a jaw-dropping adventure/mystery starting in the Cryo Chamber. Nassas being Sherlock Holmes, and Randy being Dr Watson. Or should that be randy Dr Watson?
Margaret is continuing to do what Margaret does, and I utterly adore how horrible - but logical - she can be. Occasionally her words (well, Werbeloff's, really...) are just breathtaking, for the best reasons this time. 'How utterly beautiful the universe was, thought Margaret. Ordered and magical, all at once. Margaret was glad to be alive.' Haven't we all felt like that at some point in our lives? As human beings full of wonder? Margaret's 'unification' with another fellow Margaret, Miss McFarlane, is agonizingly faultless.
This is a very worthy sequel to 'Star Phase Exodus', and the ending is marvellous. Once again, Werbeloff has picked me up with his wonderfully grotesque imagination, twirled me round with his humour and wordplay, and slammed me to the floor, exhausted by the intelligent storytelling, and the hints of the shape of things to come in this series.
I was given an ARC which I voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.
After reading book 2 in the new Jason Werbeloff series, Star Phase Void, I already can't wait to read book 3! Nassas is a character whose hypochondriac personality might literally make me insane, if he was a living, breathing person that I had to deal with on a regular basis... Yet, somehow, I am dying to know what's next on his agenda! And what the hell is going on with Margaret?! As always... Great book by a wonderfully twisted mind! Well developed, loveable/hateable (is that a word?) characters. Imaginative science fiction setting. What more could I ask for...? I could ask for book 3. Bring it on!
This is the second book in the Anchora series, and a good portion concerns one of my favorite Jason Werbeloff characters, Margaret so of course I really enjoyed it. We learn a bit more about the ship and the crew but enough questions are left unanswered to make you look forward to book 3. I'm being vague about details, as it's hard to say much without spoilers but I would definitely recommend reading this series in order, as information in each book builds on the previous one.
This is the continuing story of Margaret the Android who longs for new human parts and to be able to taste and feel things as humans do. Sometimes gruesome and sometimes humorous, but always intriging and making you want to read more to find out how things progress through this great and exciting series. The space ship is on it's way to a new land with it's inhabitants which are supposed to be pure and intelligent to create a perfect new world to live in, but things are not what they seem. Another great story from Jason. Jason never fails to keep me interested, can't wait to read more.
This book outdoes the first in humour. Could not help but laugh. The main characters are: a Security officer paranoid over sickness (hypochondria), and an android chef pursuing gustatory achievements and much more. Note: language, macabre, gore, sex
I like the hypochondriac detective Nassas and the creepy android Margaret. They make this story funny and interesting. Also, what's up with the three fingered man? Pretty interesting. Will definitely have to read the next installment.
A really entertaining read. The characters are vivid and believable, even people we just meet briefly. Margaret is able to realize her great ambition, briefly. And Nassas stops worrying so much and starts enjoying life, so disaster is probably imminent. Meanwhile, there is a mystery still to be solved.... And I really want to find out what happens to the characters next.
I was lucky enough to read an advanced reader copy of book 2 in the series, it continues the journey well, I enjoyed reading it and found it hard to put down.

Summary:
This book was different kind of Sci-fi story. Now the ship Anchora is on a one way trip to the stars with experimental equipment that everyone hopes will keep them alive until they arrive at Proxima. Everything is a gamble and Nassas with his obsessions of disease and death that make his feelings more intense. Nassas was never supposed to be there leaving him trying to make his way as a member of the security without any background about the ship or crew. Befriended by Randy, an astrophysicist, who helps him adapt until tragedy strikes leaving Nassas knowing that it was know accident. The only one to believe him is Randy who wants to play Watson to his Sherlock Holmes. Yes Randy is not your average nerd. That is only the beginning to the action as Nassas has little to unravel the mystery before he and Randy as sent to Cryo in two weeks.
This was a fast paced story where the science behind the Anchora was brought to life as Randy described the many advances to Nassas. I enjoyed the play area where humans and animals lived in a 360degree rotating cylinder where there gravity existed on all sides. Now Nassas’s obsessions brought his character to life, but after a while they began seemed at times to take over the story. Margaret is a warped and insane robot who believes “Margaret gets what Margaret wants” as she though many times. She damage she obtained years ago seems to have affected her protocols allowing her to do anything she wants. What she wants in human body parts and she will go to any lengths to get them. While her actions were graphically horrifying they made sense in the story line, They were a little too gruesome for me.
Star Phase Void is Book 2 of the Anchora series, it runs straight following the conclusion of Star Phase Exodus so it is recommended that you start in Book 1.
Nassas and Margaret have both managed to escape a dying Earth on board the spaceship Anchora, full of the best minds on Earth. Nassas continues his charade as his dead brother and begins to socialise with his fellow crew members. Margaret is seeking human parts so she can experience the wonderful tastes and smells of her wonderful rodent gourmet creations.
Life aboard the ship take a turn beginning with a cryo-pod malfunction which results in the disintegration of a crew member under mysterious circumstances. The situation continues to devolve with mass crew dysentery following an odd breakfast stew, and further cryo-pod malfunctions that cannot be explained. Can Nassas continue his masquerade as he dead brother and solve the mysteries of the Anchora before being placed into cryo sleep (or being found out as a fraud). What will come of Margaret's dreams to develop a delightful rat lung souffle?
Another great read from The Bubble and well worth exploring.
This book is sillier than the first. Like the first, the science is crazy and the tech is uneven but more so. The social background for humanity is sketchy and the nature and function of the android is unknown. That this is the last android seems to be a given and why it was damaged by an attack is still not explained.
The other characters are still silly but even less likeable. The colony ship has been supplied by looting the rest of the planet. The crew has branded themselves the cream of humanity and is a ship of fools. It's funny but very slapstick. The references to PhlikDik and other science fiction movies and shows are funny.
I liked it, though the heavy handed laughs made finishing the book difficult. I think that I'll pass on the rest of the series.
