One hundred years ago they came. We reached out to them with a hand of friendship and they returned the gesture by nearly destroying us all.
After a single encounter with the mysterious alien race identified only as Species 4876, the United Planetary Alliance was nearly decimated. Stopping their lone vessel was almost a hollow victory in the aftermath of the haunting mystery that Species 4876 Where had they come from? Why did they attack us? And most of all, what if they came back?
But they never did.
Today, the threat of Species 4876 is a distant memory, a nearly forgotten footnote in the history books.
Or is it?
On the outer rim, cut off from any backup, ignored by Fleet Admiralty and surrounded by a hostile empire and an interstellar crime syndicate, Captain Mitchell and his crew of the USS Defiance find themselves as the first, and possibly only, defense against an alien menace that the rest of the galaxy has all but forgotten about.
“Firefly” meets “Battlestar Galactica” via "Star Trek" in this addictive, fast-paced military sci-fi adventure.
Jason Krumbine loves to write! He's happily married and lives in Manhattan, NY where he enjoys reading in Central Park, going to movies and discovering new stand-up comedians. You can connect with Jason at either his website, www.jasonkrumbine.com, Facebook, Twitter (@jasonkrumbine) or good ole' fashion email onestrayword@gmail.com. He's always up for a talk about the newest Star Trek movie or what's happening in the world of comic books and TV.
Tell me do you like Star Trek? Do you want lots and lots of Star Trek in your diet? Well have I got the series for you. I've seen a bunch of Star Trek influenced books over the years. But never have I have seen a series so filled with thinly disguised bits and pieces of Star Trek. It will have you saying "Oh, those are the Federation, the Romulans, the Orions, Section 31, The Borg, Q, a maverick former admiral demoted back to Captain after he stole his decommissioned starship to go chasing after a miracle cure for a friend, a cranky old doctor who can't stop grumbling, an alien from a snooty race, a miracle working engineer..."
That being said, his spin on the Borg really is neat. The Unity try to assimilate you and your machines biologically instead of cybernetically. That's really cool.
I didn’t really like the structure of the story, the chapters alternate between a rather tedious interview in the present and the action aboard the Defiance sometime in the near past. Some of the dialogue can be long-winded, especially when it appears to be about nothing and at times the banter between the crew seems almost interminably. In fact at times the author seemed so concerned with writing witty banter he forgot about the story. The story had potential, but I couldn’t get on with the author’s style of writing and even though I was still quite interested in continuing with the story, I couldn’t face reading another book.
The dialogue and the characters are all snappy. I could visualize some scenes as happening in a tv show. It’s ‘The Orville’ with a better plot and a more world-weary crew. I almost said it needed editing, but I realized the slow pace of the plot was purposefully done to better frame what was actually happening.
I will definitely be buying the next book. This is good stuff.
Well this is the first book of what looks like a interesting series, we have a small group of officers who are part of a secret team investigating what they believe to be a alien entity. The president of the UPA, is not interesting in what they find and has only one mind that is peace at any cost even if that means handing over the people of the UPA to the enemy. The Veneer people have left the UPA and over the last 100 years seem to have been taken over by this entity or wiped out. But can the Defiance and it crew find the evidence and the way to stop it from winning.
Just fair warning: this is the first of an on going story and nothing gets resolved in this novel. Additionally this novel only sets up the on going plot.
That said this is a pretty standard 1950`s war story. A rogue spaceship captain leads his chosen bunch of misfits in a decrepit space ship against insurmountable odds. Krumbine does, at least the opening salvo, reasonably well.
The question is how many books will it take to get the story out...
An action packed Sci-Fi thriller with lots of action and political intrigue. The authors continual use of names of alien creatures, especially when the characters were swearing added nothing to the book and should have been left out.
The plot was weak in places, but there was enough action going on that this could be overlooked.
I must say it kept me interested and I finished it a a little more than a day.
The author has done a great job of bringing together a tale of action and adventure that will keep you on the edge of your set from page one to the end of the book. I really enjoyed the storyline and especially the characters. The were so real and easy to identify with. This an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
The author was trying to be too cute or too clever. The repartee was too snarky or sarcastic for a story that wasn’t that funny. The comment, “I outrank you…” was used way too many times. The back and forth style of dealing with story of them and now made it difficult to track the story and characters.
This is a fun book, a crew with smart mouths and sarcastic wit, I like Calloway she's funny ,the crew are more human than superhuman, the ship a battered wreck,I hope it gets fixed up a bit in the next book .There's some conspiracy , political infighting and a really scary enemy . This was a good read, onward onto the sequel .
First of a series, and the story ends without resolving the key plot point. Some unique SF ideas, some snarky humor, but often long passages of bantering that became tiring. I won't be reading the next book.
How much thinly-veiled Star Trek fanfic do you like in your reading material? 100%? This book is for you. The author has done a good job of capturing the Star Trek atmosphere, however, and if that is your cup of tea, you will probably enjoy this as much as I did.
As others have commented, it brings back ambiance of Star Trek and other science fiction great series.
I enjoyed the storyline and the read. It does wrap up a series of events into a book sized story but is also the first in a series. Not sure yet if I will engage into the next installment.
A space comedy/farce/parody with an underlying, terrifying idea. What if there is a completely alien entity that absorbs and transforms all biological lifeforms into one entity. And it is unstoppable.
This story grabs you and runs with you like a rollercoaster. Even with the then and now division of the story, I had a hard time stopping the read for a meal or sleep. I consumed the first book in about 6 hours over two days. I am ready for book two NOW!
This is a good space opera. The story is well written but I found the constant bickering between the characters a distraction from the action. I liked a lot of the book. Lots of echoes of Star Trek, Babylon 5 and other Sci-fi shows
The book is the fine-detailed self-doubting inner thoughts of all protagonists, interluded with short, diffused action. Like watching a soap opera where the sci-fi is in the commercials. Interesting plot but so slloooowwww that makes you flip pages by fives. Not gona loose the plot, you know.
This was a fun book and a good series introduction. Interesting characters, fun ships, lots of action and adventure. I really enjoyed this book and am glad it is part of a series. I look forward to future books. I recommend this book.
Reasonably good story - interesting enough for me to want to continue with the next book in the series. Many editorial errors and issues. I enjoyed reading this book.
The dialog just keeps going on and on. After the first couple exchanges they got more and more difficult to read. The writing is not bad, it's just that I don't think the long exchanges of quips and humor moved the story forward enough to justify their length. Plus, switching back and forth between two different points in the timeline became a little irritating. It's not bad but I won't finish it.
