Tonke Dragt
51 books269 followersTonke Dragt werd in 1930 geboren in Nederlands-Indië, en heeft daar het grootste deel van haar jeugd doorgebracht. In 1942 kwam ze met haar moeder en twee zusjes terecht in een Jappenkamp, en daar heeft ze ontdekt dat ze ze kon ‘ontsnappen’ door verhalen te verzinnen. Ze schreef en tekende in eerder gebruikte uitgegumde schriftjes en zelfs op wc-papier, want er was bijna niets. Samen met een vriendinnetje maakte ze het ‘boek’ De jacht op de Touwkleurige.
Na de oorlog kwam het gezin naar Nederland. Tonke deed hier haar eindexamen van de middelbare school en ging naar de academie voor beeldende kunsten. Ze werd tekenlerares. Als de orde in haar klas verstoord dreigde te raken, begon ze altijd een verhaal te vertellen. En dan werd het muisstil. Ze organiseerde op school ook een spookverhalenschrijversclub, waar de meest griezelige dingen gebeurden!
In 1956 werd voor het eerst een verhaal van Tonke gepubliceerd, en daarna werden er steeds meer gevraagd. Ze kreeg het druk: overdag lesgeven en ’s avonds en vooral ’s nachts schrijven. In 1961 verscheen haar eerste boek: Verhalen van de tweelingbroers.
Een jaar later kwam De brief voor de koning, dat werd bekroond met de prijs voor het beste kinderboek van het jaar, een voorloper van de Gouden Griffel. Het kreeg ook een vervolg: Geheimen van het Wilde Woud.
De meeste kinderboekenschrijvers schreven in die tijd realistische verhalen, maar Tonke creëerde haar eigen werelden, zoals de Rijken van Dagonaut en Unauwen.
Het thema ‘tijd’ speelt vaak een rol in haar boeken. De hoofdpersoon van De torens van februari kan eens in de vier jaar, op schrikkeldag, naar een andere wereld reizen, en Torenhoog en mijlen breed speelt zich af in de toekomst. Het geheim van de klokkenmaker gaat over een tijdmachine – en vooral over de vraag wat er gebeurt als je daar niet heel voorzichtig mee omgaat…
Tonke houdt van poezen. Die geven haar de mogelijkheid een tijger te aaien. En tijgers intrigeren haar: Ogen van tijgers is niet voor niets geschreven!
Al haar poezen (en ze heeft er vele gehad) zijn op een bijzondere manier bij haar gekomen: aanloopkatten, eenzame katten als het baasje was overleden… Ze krijgen allemaal een naam die met een W begint. Wapperstaart, Woesti en Wicci de Winterpoes zijn de meest recente.

Upon discovering a character I admire and adore, I often aspire to become that character. Emulate a new role model, envision greater goals and dream of different worlds to conquer. In this case, though, I would never set myself up for that fall. Merely a human being, a perfectly plausible person; Tiuri is genuinely good. And kind. I believe that Tiuri is truly and actually, altruistic.
His epic journey to deliver a message of monumental importance took place many years ago. A mission that today could be as simple as “send”, was an adventure only for the courageous and strong then. Traveling alone, on horseback at best; stumbling through the forest by sheer will, hiding from the knights who considered him a murderer and a thief, at worst.
Tiuri is brave. No. Make that, bold—often foolishly so. Although, to be fair, no fault can ever be found. If ever there was a quintessential example of will power (aside from Frog & Toad “Cookies”, that is), Tiuri conveys it. Wise beyond his years he is also, oddly, naïve. A sincere listener, Tiuri ponders then proceeds. Complexly concurrent, he has an uncanny ability to act instinctively.
But I’ve buried the lead.
Tiuri should not even be embarking on this endeavor. Moments before he fled his kingdom, fleet on a stolen horse, with the furious owner following; Tiuri had been locked inside a silent chapel, reflecting upon the duties he would perform as knight to his beloved king; beginning at sunrise.
Tiuri’s abrupt departure meant sacrificing what he had worked towards his whole life (all sixteen years of it). His decision seems reckless and a bit ridiculous. But things aren’t always as they seem, and this cunning theme cuts through narrative cleverly guiding Tiuri as he encounters a plethora of peculiar people during his travels.
The Letter for the King reads like an instant classic. While the fiction is fresh, the feel is familiar. Mystery and intrigue magnificently merge with action and adventure, appealing to all senses. The colorful characters encountered keep loneliness at bay and Tiuri on his toes. 11-year-old-me would have read this book over and over and over.

Een beetje traditioneel en braaf: een klassieke queeste met ridders en veel helpende burgers tijdens de tocht. In enige mate vergelijkbaar met de Hobbit maar dan zonder de humor en de magie
Ik hoop niet dat hij nu ook van alles zal gaan vragen. Het lijkt wel of iedereen die ik ontmoet, mij op wil houden
De brief voor de koning bestaat uit 8 delen, waarin Tiuri als aspirerend ridder op weg moet naar een vreemd koninkrijk om een brief te bezorgen. Ik heb het boek nu voor het eerst als volwassene gelezen, mogelijk dat mijn waardering daardoor wat minder is dan het zou geweest zijn als ik het nu herlezen had met de gevoelens van jeugdnostalgie erbij. Tonke Dragt geeft ons een best een traditioneel verhaal, wel redelijk vlot verteld, maar met een hoofdpersoon die behoorlijk braaf en goed is, en wat pit mist. Ik vond ook soms de oplossingen voor gevaren wat te makkelijk, met als hoogtepunt/dieptepunt de struikrovers die hem laten gaan met een zeldzaam kleinood.
De eerste twee delen vlogen voorbij en gaven me een Mirkwood gevoel, met rovers, ridders, sterfscènes; ik snap waarom er een verfilming is gekomen. Ook deel 4 geeft me heel erg The Fellowship of the Ring vibes met mysterieuze ruiters, herbergen en een grote weg waar gevaar schuilt. De verteltrend is lekker laagdrempelig, maar in deel 2 valt me op dat er wat gedoe is met ring om, ring af, ring om en glow in the dark, wat uiteindelijk voor het plot nauwelijks impact lijkt te hebben.
En in deel 3 viel me dit ook: waarom krijgt hij twee keer wapens, en is er een hoop gedoe met vastbinden als het uiteindelijk niet eens opvalt dat hij los is?
Tiuri als hoofdpersoon mist voor mijn gevoel wat karakter en krijgt het over het algemeen ook niet heel zwaar te verduren. In deel 5 bijvoorbeeld, de tocht door de bergen, vond ik het verhaal weinig spannend omdat de manier waarop Tiuri onder het gevaar uitkomt best wel van toeval en goedgunstigheden afhangt. Wel leuk dat hij een metgezel vindt, maar in deel 6 zijn er weer twee gebeurtenissen die best veel op elkaar lijken en allebei door beter/aardigere omstanders opgelost worden. Het geeft me een beetje Koning van Katoren herinneringen, maar dan zonder een sassy Stach.
Deel 7 viel me dan wel mee, met eindelijk wat meer gevaar en wat verlies, en Tirillo de nar als een leuk en wijs karakter, die dingen zegt als: Als u maar onthoudt dat u, als u tegen het kwaad vecht, zelf nog niet goed bent!
Deel 8: de terugkeer is altijd een beetje saai, en er wordt niet een dappere keuze gemaakt aan het eind door Tonke Dragt, hoewel deze quote wel zeker mooi is:
Er zal altijd iets zijn wat je mist, of je nu weggaat of hier blijft. Je moet steeds afscheid nemen, je hele leven door.
Ik hoop niet dat hij nu ook van alles zal gaan vragen. Het lijkt wel of iedereen die ik ontmoet, mij op wil houden

Great childrens book, read it several times. Tonke Dragt's books are also read by many adults. Wonderful writer!!

Toen ik dit boek in de boekhandel zag liggen voor slechts 3 euro, was de verleiding te groot om het ook maar gewoon mee te nemen naar de kassa. Ik ga eerlijk zijn, ik ben nooit een fan geweest van ridderverhalen, maar met een zoon in huis die aan de lopende band ridderzwaarden in karton zit te maken, kon ik moeilijk anders.
Het moet gezegd dat dit boek qua taalgebruik minder gedateerd aanvoelt dan "De zevensprong". Als er al archaïsche woorden in voorkomen, is het gerelateerd aan het riddergebeuren, dus dat hoort er nu eenmaal bij. Enkel "der" heb ik consequent gelezen als "van de". Daar trek ik de grens, haha.
Wat wél gedateerd aanvoelt, is het ritme van dit boek. Het is duidelijk dat Tonke Dragt niet bekend was met het principe van cliffhangers. Elk hoofdstukje eindigt mooi nádat er iets spannends is gebeurd, en meestal met Tiuri die tevreden gaat slapen. Vriendelijk dat Tonke dacht aan kinderen die daarna rustig moeten slapen!
Het ritme ligt in het algemeen vrij traag, in dit ridderverhaal zonder enige magie. Ik moest wat wennen aan zo een "braaf" boek.
Kortom: het is een charmant boek, maar helemaal weg was ik er niet van, al is Tiuri zo een lief hoofdpersonage.
Mijn dochter had hetzelfde gevoel als ik, denk ik.
Maar mijn zoon! Hij maakte tekeningen over kastelen met Tiuri en Piak. Hij onthield de namen als de beste (Ardanwen begot). Hij vertelde spontaan over dingen in het boek. En nu het uit is, zeurt hij voortdurend dat hij nog iets wil lezen over Tiuri. Dat hij dit boek zoveel leuker vindt dan Morrigan (Crow, het volgende voorleesboek). Op mijn vraag waarom, was zijn antwoord: bij Morrigan Crow zijn er zoveel echt stoute mensen en slechte dingen die gebeuren, bij Tiuri is dat niet.
En misschien is dat inderdaad wat sommige kinderen (zoals mijn zoon) nodig hebben: een ridderwereld met een moedig en braaf hoofdpersonage, een klein beetje tegenstand, maar met vooral veel hulp en vrienden, en de beschrijving van de lange reis om zich er helemaal in te verliezen.
Als ik naar mijn zoon luister, begrijp ik de jeugdklassieker-status van dit boek. En aangezien het een kinderboek is, telt zijn mening natuurlijk veel meer mee dan de mijne.

Holyshit. Dit was EPISCH!
Ooit toen ik 9 was of zo heb ik geprobeerd dit boek te lezen, en ik kwam er niet doorheen. Daardoor heb ik het boek, net als Tonke Dragt, een beetje afgezworen. Maar man wat heb ik daar nu spijt van, want WOW. WOWOWOWOWOW.
Dit is alles wat een cool middeleeuws avontuur moet zijn. Er is drama en gevaar en vriendschap en grappen en angst en blijdschap en zo veel COOLS. De hoofdpersoon is ook zo ontzettend zestien, op de beste manier mogelijk.
Ik zat op het puntje van mijn stoel, en zag elke twist nog minder aankomen dan de volgende. Ik stuurde DMs naar een vriend over alle wendingen, en we hebben uiteindelijk urenlang gepraat over Tiuri en zijn avonturen. Dat maakte het nog zo veel mooier.
Mijn favoriete personages zijn de schrijver van de burgemeester van Dangria, en Slupor. Slupor is echt een icoon, en de schrijver verdient een eigen spinoff. Oh, en Ristridin en Edwinem zijn zo gay voor elkaar, echt bizar.
Dit boek was alles wat ik wilde, en zodra mijn studie wat rustiger wordt ga ik vol overtuiging deel twee lezen. Nu al zin in!
Oh, en het luisterboek is een dikke aanrader, want die stem is echt bizar prettig

Oh, give me a sec to let my tears drop.
This book is beautiful. The story inside feels so real. It feels different. It almost feels like Tiuri, the main character here, sits across the room telling me the story himself, and help me learnt so much.
I won't forget this book, that is for sure.
I am glad I found this book in my school library a few days ago. This is beyond my imagination.
I had no expectation when I first saw this book. I thought to myself that maybe this is another freakish classic tale, written with so much art and deep thoughts and evil mixed in. But what I found is surprising.
After a few pages I realized how this book feels so pure and unreal but real at the same time. How this book did nothing but touching its readers and send them great values of life that they learn by themself.
It is a book for kids.. but it is an awesome book. Oh let me cry for a little bit more, for this book is beautiful.
I ridiculously love it, I learnt so much from it, gosh I just adore it.
It doesn't feel old or boring. It's awesome.
The characters are all males most of the time, guys that shared the same age with me right now.
The story is about a journey of Tiuri, a young man that ran away on the night before he could be the king's knight, for a secret mission given by strangers. On his journey he met a lot of people, become friends with so many people, and face so much danger. The story tells about how he discovered a lot of things about life, about himself, about the world.
Some sentences here punch in a huge impression in my heart, like the time when Tiuri finished his mission and a wise clown from the neighbour country told him a story of a guy who went on a journey to chase the end of the rainbow, for he believed that the end of the rainbow would be the most beautiful place on earth. However l, after the long trip he found nothing. He was disappointed, but then he thought about the journey he had, how he met so many awesome new friends, beautiful sights,and a lot of happiness, he realized that the rainbow is not the most important thing! Thee beauty and values he found in his journey, that is the most important.
This book is crazily awesome, I hope my son or daughter will read it one day and feel the same thing.

On his journey he met a lot of people, become friends with so many people, and face so much danger. The story tells about how he discovered a lot of things about life, about himself, about the world.
Some sentences here punch in a huge impression in my heart, like the time when Tiuri finished his mission and a wise clown from the neighbour country told him a story of a guy who went on a journey to chase the end of the rainbow, for he believed that the end of the rainbow would be the most beautiful place on earth. However l, after the long trip he found nothing. He was disappointed, but then he thought about the journey he had, how he met so many awesome new friends, beautiful sights,and a lot of happiness, he realized that the rainbow is not the most important thing! Thee beauty and values he found in his journey, that is the most important.
This book is crazily awesome, I hope my son or daughter will read it one day and feel the same thing.

This is a prime example of a book that needs an introduction. The original Dutch edition of The Letter for the King was published in 1962 by an Indonesian survivor of WWII Japanese internment camps and is considered to be a European children's classic. 50 years later, it was finally translated into English.
So how does it hold up? Poorly, when you consider how the English edition was marketed.
I found it on a YA shelf with a shiny cover promising the epic adventures of a 16-year old squire. Sounds like YA, right? What was inside was an intensely linear plot with zero moral complexity, character development, or twists. The villains are uniformly murderous and come from Evilland (Eviellan), women exist solely to feed Tiuri (though one gives him some chain mail), and there's never a difficult decision - not even a wrong turn on a road. The writing does absolutely nothing for me, though that's hard to judge from a translation.
Had I been faced with an edition that started with a formal introduction to Tonke Dragt (who seems very interesting) and the history of Dutch children's lit, I would have had a better frame of reference for reading and perhaps enjoying the book. However, given the way this printing was presented, I would advise readers after a children's medieval adventure to pick up more recent MG books like The Ruins of Gorlan or First Test instead. They're still fairly straightforward, but at least there's something going on in terms of plot and character.
If you are an adult determined to read the translation, save it for reading aloud to kids under 10.

Μου άρεσε ιδιαίτερα αυτό το βιβλίο και ο λόγος είναι πως παρότι είναι 616 σελίδες δεν βαρέθηκα ούτε μια στιγμή. Η ιστορία του Τιούρι, ενός αγοριού 16 ετών που το βράδυ της αγρυπνίας του, πριν από το πρωινό που θα χριζόταν οππότης άκουσε μια φωνή βοήθειας είναι απλά εκπληκτική! Αφήνοντας τα πάντα πίσω του, παρότι ουσιαστικά ήξερε τις συνέπειες, γνώρισε τι σημαίνει κίνδυνος αλλά και αληθινή φιλία. Καμιά φορά δεν έχει σημασία ο προορισμός αλλά το ταξίδι. Υπέροχο βιβλίο που το συστήνω σε μικρούς και μεγάλους!

Dieses Buch habe ich schon einmal als Kind gelesen und es hat mich begeistert! Damals habe ich noch nicht so viel gelesen, deswegen heißt das wirklich was 😊.
Deswegen habe ich mir das Buch noch einmal gekauft (keine Ahnung wo das alte Buch ist 🙈) und habe es jetzt nochmal gelesen.
Meine Meinung.
Obwohl ich jetzt doch ein paar Jahre älter geworden bin, hat mir das Buch noch genauso gut gefallen wie damals!
Der junge Tiuri soll am nächsten Tag zum Ritter geschlagen werden, nur bittet ihn in dieser Nacht jemand um Hilfe und so bricht er zu einem Abenteuer auf 😊.
Tiuri ist wirklich ein herzensguter Junge! Er ist 16 Jahre alt und sein größter Traum ist es ein Ritter zu werden wie sein Vater. Nachdem er seinen geheimen Auftrag angenommen hat, scheut er keine Mühen um sein Ziel zu erreichen und dabei wächst er ständig über sich hinaus.
Auf seinem Weg begegnen ihm einige Personen. Manche von ihnen sind vertrauenswürdig, andere eher weniger. Teilweise ist aber nicht von vornerein klar wer I welche Kategorie fällt.
Mir persönlich haben von den übrigen Charakteren die grauen Ritter und Piak am besten gefallen.
Man wird fast schon in die Handlung hineingeworfen, denn es geht gleich spannend los. Danach ist Tiuri natürlich auch viel unterwegs, denn er muss in ein anderes Königreich reisen, aber er begegnet auch vielen Menschen auf seinem Weg und er kommt auch immer wieder in schwierige Situationen. Als Kind saß ich wie gebannt vor dem Buch, da ich mir teilweise gar nicht vorstellen konnte, wie das noch gut ausgehen könnte 😅. Jetzt war es für mich eher absehbar 🙈.
Für mich war es besonders interessant, weil ich wirklich viel vergessen habe, aber mich trotzdem noch an Kleinigkeiten erinnern konnte. Ich habe aber z. B. auch noch eine genaue Szene im Kopf, bei der ich mir eine große Halle vorgestellt habe, in der alle essen 😅. Nur leider passt das so gar nicht zu der Beschreibung in dem Buch und meiner jetzigen Vorstellung 😂 (Ehrlich? Im Grunde genommen habe ich mir damals einfach Hogwarts vorgestellt 😅).
Ich habe zwar einige Tage gebraucht um das Buch zu lesen, aber es hat mir auch wirklich Spaß gemacht 😊.
Der Schreibstil von Tonke Dragt ist toll! Viele andere Autoren hätten eine so lange Reise wohl nicht ohne größere Längen schreiben können, die waren hier zum Glück gar nicht vorhanden 😄.
Das Buch wird ab 11-13 empfohlen, ich habe es damals aber definitiv früher gelesen 🤔.
Anscheinend gibt es noch einen zweiten Band, den ich definitiv mal lesen werde 😊 und einen Film zu "Der Brief für den König" gibt es auch 😱.

I read this with my 10 year old son for the kids bookclub he belongs to through one of our local independent bookstores. It wasn't one I had previously heard of, although it is a Dutch classic, where it was originally published in 1962.
This is quaintly written old fashioned chivalric fantasy which would provide a nice entry to the genre for middle grade and young adult audiences. It's an older book, and reads that way, but it nevertheless has a simple appeal that keeps it fresh enough for modern readers.
My son is not new to fantasy, and he quite enjoyed this. Aside from the story, he loved the included map and black and white illustrations done by the author. It was quite an accomplishment for him to tackle a book that comes in at just over 500 pages, but the story moves along at a nice pace that ended up making the length less daunting for him.

One of those books that will always contain and refuel the wonder and amazement and vividness of those first few magical reading experiences. One of those books I keep coming back to, time and time and time again. One that’s flawed and obviously imperfect but the narrative relies so strongly on feelings (vibes) that the flaws are insignificant.

Na het luisteren van het fijne gesprek van De Grote Vriendelijke Podcast met schrijfster Tonke Dragt en het zien van eerste beelden van de Netflix serie The Letter for the king, wist ik het helemaal zeker - het was weer eens hoog tijd om het werk van deze fantastische kinderboekenschrijfster op te zoeken. En waar kan je dan beter beginnen dan met het boek wat 50 jaar na publicatie weer helemaal in de spotlights staat?
Meerdere malen bekroond, eerst met Het kinderboek van het jaar (1963) en daarna met De Griffel der Griffels (2004) is De brief voor de koning niet meer weg te denken uit de Nederlandse (kinder-)boekenwereld.
In februari 2020 ontdekte ik weer waarom dit boek al deze lof zo enorm verdiend.

Ahoy there me mateys! I received this young adult fantasy eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. So here be me honest musings . . .
I always be interested in fairy tales from other lands. This translation caught me eye because the author was born in Indonesia, imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp in WWII, and then moved to the Netherlands. She published this book in 1962 and it won the Children's Book of the Year Award and was subsequently translated into sixteen languages. Apparently it is also becoming a Netflix series. So I had to know what the hype was about.
And sadly I have to say that I don't really get it. The story follows a boy named Tiuri. He was standing vigil on the night before becoming a Knight when he chooses to leave the chapel in order to deliver an urgent message. What was supposed to be a simple task instead becomes a quest to deliver a message to a king in another land.
This book is a fairly straightforward and simplistic tale where the young squire is always meeting people at just the right time to help him and nothing bad really ever happens. Tiuri is supposed to be 16 but comes across as being much younger. His naivete seemed to make him more like ten or so. He is honorable and makes friends wherever he goes.
Unfortunately there was no real tension and I was pretty disconnected from the story. It was a quick read even though the time dragged when actually reading it. The world building wasn't that exciting either. With slow pacing and not much action, I was tempted to not finish this one. I did finish it but didn't really like it and will not reread it. I wish it had been better.
So lastly . . .

As YA goes, this is a 5-star plot. It was written in 1962, apparently, and the new translation is coming on 25 August of 2015.
It's the story of a squire on the eve of becoming a knight who does NOT become a knight because he makes the fateful decision to answer a call for help. One thing leads to another, and before long, this kid is on a quest with unseen enemies all around him (but with unexpected friends as well).
It's sweet, actually. So old school it will remind you of the type of book about knighthood you could not put down as a kid. A simpler world of good and evil, don't you know. An antidote to the gray confusions in our time.
Memory Lane, anyone? I suspect reluctant readers and fans of all things medieval will love it.

I had the urge to read this book after I finished the Netflix series and god was I surprised.
They have NOTHING in common except that there's a boy named Tiuri whose mission is to deliver a letter.
Well, I actually enjoyed the book a lot more because it didn't have the annoying female characters and the magic elements.
Romance makes everything complicated and cringy and reading about Tiuri's and Piak's strong friendship was much more entertaining! :)

Eindelijk dit welbekende boek gelezen! Een leuk boek, maar wel een beetje langdradig. Op een gegeven moment werd ik zelf gewoon moe van dat gereis, terwijl ik het alleen maar las haha! Gelukkig beleeft Tiuri onderweg wel allemaal avonturen. En Piak is een geweldig personage!
Ik ben erg benieuwd hoe het boek is verfilmd tot serie, dus die gaat zeker op mijn to watch lijst!

Het avontuur! De spanning! Die hofnar! Als je het voor elkaar krijgt dat ik vrijwillig ruim 400 pagina's over de middeleeuwen lees dan verdien je alleen daarom al vijf sterren.

June 23, 2020No voy a puntuarlo por el simple motivo de que no es un libro escrito para mí (para mi rango de edad) y me parece injusto juzgar esta obra teniendo en cuenta que cosas que podría considerar problemas (simplicidad de la trama, personajes bidimensionales...) no lo son, dado que se trata de un libro infantil. Ni siquiera juvenil. Aunque la colección se supone que está dirigida a jóvenes a partir de 12 años, este libro es demasiado simple para alguien de esa edad. Con doce ya estás leyendo historias más complejas.
Lo que puedo decir es que es una novela de aventuras, de hecho, de aventurillas constantes dentro de la trama general, que se trata de un chaval que debe entregar una carta muy importante al rey de otro reino. Está estructurado en capítulos muy cortos, haciéndolos ideales para leerlos antes de dormir, y en todos ellos pasa algo. No hay momentos aburridos o de reflexión. Es aventura pura y dura. Tiene cierto regusto a libro de caballería, porque se habla mucho de caballeros y cada uno está representado por colores característicos (el caballero negro del escudo blanco, los caballeros grises...), lo cual lo acerca, por ejemplo, a coloridas películas de los 50 como "Coraza negra", "Los caballeros del rey Arturo" o "El príncipe Valiente". Extrañamente, es una historia que no tiene magia. No hay poderes mágicos ni magos ni nada de eso (hay hombres sabios, pero no poseen dotes mágicas).
Se trata de una sencilla historia de aventuras con un muchacho honesto y valiente que trata de cumplir una misión y los amigos que hace por el camino. Que por cierto, da igual la heterosexualidad forzada que se saque el libro al final, Tiuri y Piak son novios.
Lo que puedo decir es que es una novela de aventuras, de hecho, de aventurillas constantes dentro de la trama general, que se trata de un chaval que debe entregar una carta muy importante al rey de otro reino. Fijn om zo nu en dan eens een jeugdverhaal te lezen waarin alle problemen behapbaar zijn en de meeste mensen belangeloos behulpzaam. Maar aan het einde dacht ik dan toch: het gaat allemaal wel heel gemakkelijk en zo zitten mensen niet in elkaar.
De dialogen vond ik soms raar anglicistisch (Is het niet?). Het veelvuldig gebruik van het woord 'elkander' kon ik wel waarderen.
Je hebt niet de ridderslag ontvangen, maar je hebt getoond dat je een ridder bént. Je hebt jezelf geridderd, Tiuri, en als ik jou met een zwaard op je nek sla, zul je daardoor niet méér ridder worden dan je nu al bent!' (440)

It's been a whopping fifteen years since I first read this as a kid. It's a strange and magical thing to return to something a former self has been obsessed with – though, as an adult now, I am not quite the target group for this anymore.
This is the story of Tiuri, a 16-year old boy who is to be knighted the following day. His final task is to spent one last night in silence in a chapel. What sounds easy enough, suddenly becomes difficult when someone knocks on the door, urgently asking for help. A secret letter must be delivered to the King living across the Great Mountains. Suddenly Tiuri plays a vital role in deciding the fate of the kingdom, one on which his knighthood depends as well.
This is a lovely tale, and Tiuri is the perfect protagonist. I didn't remember how good a person Tiuri was, but in retrospect I am quite pleased that this is the sort of hero my younger self was exposed to. Tiuri is utterly good. To like, a ridiculous degree. His morals are intact, so is his sense of honesty, loyalty and courage. What a guy.
The writing is simple, straightforward (and not that stimulating for adults). Same goes for the story – I can't hold it against the book, as I can still recall the feelings this gave me as a kid I can guarantee that if you're a middle-grader, the reading experience will be different. The story probably won't even feel that fast-paced, simply because at that age, it takes way longer to get through a 500 paged book.
You know, if you're an adult and don't feel drawn to this for nostalgic reasons, I wouldn't particularly go up to you and force you to engage with this. But you know, if you've got children around, then here's a gripping story with good and subtle morals for you.

4/10/2017 5 Stars - a long time favorite (Sorry I'm writing this in English, my written dutch just isn't good enough to express my thoughts -but I guess that is part of the reason why I tried to read this book - to improve my language skills) Well - I was finally able to finish this book (I just decided to read the rest in one chunk), it took much longer than I thought it would, which was mildly discouraging to my venture to try to read more dutch books - mostly because I had to stop every 3 pages and ask my boyfriend what the old-timey dutch word meant that google translate wouldn't explain to me :/
Ignoring that the story is epic, and intriguing and the world is build so well and the dialogue is excellently written and really immerses you in the medieval time it is supposed to take place in. I really encourage everyone to try and pick it up - it's been translated in quite a few languages.

My father has always faintly disliked reading. Too bad he got me as a daughter! Out of the countless of books that he read to me when I was small, this book and its sequel are by far the most memorable. It fed my imagination to no ends, spawning both great visions and one of the most terrifying nightmares I remember. Since back then, much has changed. My knowledge of the Dutch language might have become crippled, and my eyes feast on the pages of other fantasy masterpieces, but Tonke Dragt and this book has always a place amongst my favourites. I'd also go as far as to claim, that as an aspiring fantasy writer, this book has been one of the many little influences that set me on this path.
De brief voor de koning was a glorious experience to me many years ago, and will no doubt offer the same delight to any other child fond of books today.

Egal wie oft ich es lese: es ist seit meiner Kindheit ein Lieblingsbuch. Eine Heldengeschichte, die ohne Klischees, ohne Magie und ohne Monster auskommt, es geht einfach nur um Mut, der auch in den Kleinsten steckt, und Freundschaft. Die Netflix-"Adaption" hat dieses Buch definitiv nicht verdient.

Dit is een spannend avonturen verhaal voor Jong en oud. Met een aansprekende queeste, leuke personages en je gaat helemaal meeleven met Tiuri, de hoofdpersoon, die ridder wil worden maar op de avond van de wake, voordat hij tot ridder geslagen wordt een klop op de deur vsn de kapel beantwoord. Met die daad kan hij geen ridder meer worden. Wel kan hij een zeer belangrijke brief naar de koning brengen die hij heeft gekregen van een van de ridders van de koning.
Natuurlijk het boek als kind gelezen. Toen der tijd geleend uit de bibliotheek. Later zelf dit boek aangeschaft. Is gewoon een van de besten boeken de Tonke schreef vond ik toen en nu.

Right at the beginning of this book I got pulled right in the story. I really enjoyed reading it. About half way through it got a little repetitive and like there are no bad people out there.

Heerlijk, heerlijk. Zo ben ik op mijn oude dag toch maar eens iets van Tonke Dragt gaan lezen. En deze boeken zijn erg leuk. Er gebeurt altijd wat en het is spannend, maar niet echt gruwelijk of zo. Dat zou ook niet passen in een jeugdboek. Tiuri gaat op weg om een brief te bezorgen. En dat gebeurt op een, voor hem, zeer belangrijk moment, namelijk net voor hij tot ridder zal worden geslagen. Als hij de rituelen voor die plechtigheid onderbreekt, zal hij geen ridder worden. Tiuri kiest ervoor om te helpen en gaat op weg met de brief. Hij hoeft niet ver en hij kan terug zijn voor men merkt dat hij weg is gegaan. De man waaraan hij de brief moet doorgeven is echter ernstig gewond en vraagt Tiuri om zelf te zorgen dat de brief bezorgd wordt. Zo begint Tiuri aan een grote tocht door bergen en dalen en ontmoet hij vriendelijk mensen en schurken, wordt hij achtervolgd en vindt hij een vriend. Absoluut leuk om voor te lezen aan kinderen vanaf een jaar of 7, maar ook leuk om zelf te lezen natuurlijk.
