Clint Wolf #4-6

Clint Wolf Boxed Set

Rate this book
Books 4-6 (But Not Forever, But Not For Naught, and But Not Forbidden) of the Clint Wolf Mystery Series by award-winning author BJ Bourg now available as a boxed set! BUT NOT FOREVERAfter a year of working as a tour guide in the swamps of Louisiana--and the day after a man’s body is found in a canal--former Police Chief Clint Wolf realizes he can’t stay away from law enforcement work forever. Ditching his paddle for a pistol, he rejoins the Mechant Loup Police Department, but this time as their chief investigator, and he works beside Police Chief Susan Wilson as they seek to solve the mystery in the canal. While it isn’t odd to find drowned bodies floating in the vast waterways of Louisiana from time to time, it is unusual to find a body with six bullet holes in its back. This first case back for Clint won’t be a walk in the park, but a blue truck and a single piece of paper might be the key to everything. The only problem? The truck has seemingly vanished into thin air and no one can find the piece of paper.BUT NOT FOR NAUGHT The only thing worse than being stabbed in the back is being shot in the back; and that’s exactly what happens to local bar owner Mitch Taylor. As Clint Wolf and Susan Wilson investigate, the list of suspects begins to grow and it includes the victim’s estranged wife. Just when it appears Clint is closing in on the killer, things takes a surprising turn and the entire complexion of the case is changed. As though the twist in the case weren’t enough, Clint finds an old photograph that turns his personal life on its head and sets him on a dual quest for answers. Not only is he interrogating suspects, but he also interrogates his mother, and he begins to wonder what will be more difficult—discovering the secret to his past or solving Mitch Taylor’s murder. One thing is certain…no one will be the same after this is over.BUT NOT FORBIDDEN The only thing Clint Wolf and Susan Wilson want to do is get married, but when a man is murdered in a most embarrassing way--shot to death while sitting on a porta potty--their wedding plans are placed in serious jeopardy. With only eight days to go until they say their vows, Clint and Susan go to work trying to find out who might want to kill the victim. There are a number of likely suspects and they all seem to have good reasons for wanting the man dead, but Clint and Susan must figure out who hated him the most. As they work their way through the evidence in search of the truth, they are unknowingly headed for a deadly confrontation. Before it's all over, bullets will start flying and people are going to die...and if they're not careful, one of them might not make it to the altar.

Good stories but spoilt by silly mistakes

I really enjoyed the first set of books and was looking forward to seeing what was next in store for Clint, Susan and the other characters of this little town.

Whilst the plot lines behind these books are good and interesting, and the characters are still as engaging and relatable as before, it was disappointing to see so many silly errors and continuity mistakes. These range from alternating the spelling of a character surname - sometimes it's Cane and others Cain and some other missed typos; to describing Susan holding the phone to Clint's ear (whilst he's driving at speed on duty) for him to speak to his new found sister for the first time! and putting Susan behind the wheel and driving her police car whilst her leg is in plaster and she's on crutches, which would likely nullify the insurance, even in an automatic car. Things that I would like to think that police officers would not do, certainly not on duty.

I was also disappointed with the glossing over or jumping around in some of the storylines. One minute Clint is in a surf shop and meets his sister and biological father and finds out the full extent of the damage and devastation his mother caused them. A few chapters later it's like nothing ever happened and the estranged mum and daughter are now on great terms, exchanging phone calls etc.

They are still enjoyable books and I will continue with the series as I really like the characters and want to see what's in store for them next.

Books 4-6 move the storylines along nicely

But Not Forever (Book Four)

A twisty mystery is the basis for the fourth book in the Clint Wolf series. This book starts a year after the events of book three. Clint and Susan are now engaged to be married, Susan is the Chief of Police and Clint is giving swamp tours until a body is discovered and Susan convinces Clint to get back in the game.

There are a few things that don’t jibe exactly with info from previous books (like where the money came from to build a new house while also fully renovating a dilapidated mansion when Clint gave his entire savings as a reward for info in a previous case and how Clint could sell “his” house when in book one we are told it belonged to his father-in-law.) A brief explanation of those things would have made the story more smooth since those kind of details take my head out of a story.

This mystery is an interesting one and while several great red herrings are offered the final reveal is well done. Every time I got a new clue I developed a new theory only to have it dashed by yet another clue! So much fun for a lover of mysteries.

Also like how once again the author has common themes running through different storylines in the book providing a sense of cohesion and continuity.

But Not for Naught (book five)

Another good mystery with a great ending. And once again the author makes great use of parallel themes in interesting ways.

Clint and Susan are getting closer to finalizing wedding plans when a situation comes up in Clint’s personal life that throws him for a loop. Meanwhile he’s got a murdered bar owner who appears to have no enemies. As Clint tries to narrow the suspect pool he keeps getting thwarted. There’s also a parallel flashback story running that we know somehow fits in but we”re not quite sure how.

It’s a twisty case and while the red herrings aren’t great they may throw you off a bit. The climax is exciting (no spoilers!)

But Not Forbidden (Book six)
When book six begins we are days away from Clint and Susan’s wedding when a murder occurs at the town fair. And thanks a problem because if the murder isn’t solved there won’t be a wedding...talk about pressure!

When a murder occurs at the fair Clint has a dead guy in a porta potty and a possible suspect. Then he’s got another suspect, then another...

The story takes some interesting twists and turns and there’s an action packed climax with help from a surprising and unlikely source. (Which might have been my favorite part!)

And all is well and the mothers can breathe easy as it all occurs in time for the wedding to still take place.

Clint Wolf, Books 4 - 6 by BJ Bourg

“And your fragrance shall be my breath,
And together we shall rejoice through all the seasons.
Khalil Gibran”

BJ Bourg; once again, spins you into a whirlwind of mystery, murder, and detective deductions ... flavored with Louisiana small town heritage and a taste of bayou folklore—descriptive of murky, musky, mosquitos infected swamps & gators.

These are but ambiances to the underlining heart of the main character, who’s truly a hero in his own story ... this time, smitten with romance and a founded soulmate to live a life of ...

Welp, the ease in reading leaves you racing to find what awaits.

The mystery is in itself, the authors special gift in painting a masterful picture that misdirects and weaves into a cleaver outcome. It leaves you for wanting more!

Great series with more in continuation—and, I gladly can’t wait ...

Reading B. J. Bourg’s biography I can see why he writes such incredibly intelligent mysteries, there’s no better teacher than real life experience and Mr. Bourg encompasses all the characters he writes about: boxer, cop, detective and sniper from the swamps of Louisiana. Intriguing and compelling his plots weave in and out leaving you guessing and beguiled. Each of his characters are well developed and manage to make the reader have a sense of knowing from whence they came, whether good or evil.

The only thing that makes this two stars is the first book which had a great story. There are still a ton of typos and unbelievable moments starting with just going back to his career like nothing went horribly wrong. The family complications in book two were unnecessary and didn't develop Clint any further. Also the entire premise of constant murders in this tiny town just doesn't make sense. The town would be empty. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. I just can't get past the ridiculously outlandish and straight up nonsensical things that the characters do. It's a no from me.

This is the 2nd set in the series and I've enjoyed them This set picks up with Susan and Clint falling in love while they solve murders. In the first 2 books the murders are tied back lo long past. The 1st involves drugs and the people who hide and go straight. The 2nd is about and abusive stepdad and how his abusive past comes back to bite him. The 3rd is about family loyalty and pride. The murder happens close to the time of Susan and Clints wedding day. They are trying like he'll to solve the case so they can get married on schedule.

Intriguing mystery reads

The three novels in this boxed set kept me interested & had several twists & turns that I didn't expect. Stories are about a couple-one a former chief of police in a small town who returns as it's only detective & his fiancée (current chief of police in the same town) figuring out crimes/murders. Well written plots & characters that didn't disappoint. Very enjoyable reading. Keep'em coming...

Compelling reading

Good characters and complex plots.

The only problem with reading a boxed set as good as this is that you can’t put it down even when you get to the end of one book. Oh, well, treat it like a mini holiday in Louisiana, mozzies and pickers and all.

For the grammar police (among whom I number myself) just bite your tongue when you read phrases like “it shined” instead of “it shone”, and put it down to local dialect.

Louisiana Lawman

Clint Wolf is a cop with a tragic past who moves to small town Mechant Loup Louisiana as police chief to start over. There he uses his formidable investigative skills to solve murders and crimes, fight alligators and find new love. This series is filled with interesting characters, intriguing crimes, and the biggest alligator in the swamp. Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

Better yet

People living off the grid in the forgotten swamp, a dangerous, alligator filled bayou in Louisiana. Clint and Melvin have to go there to inform the family of their father’s death. The men felt lucky to get out of there alive, but had to investigate the murder. Greed, family values and the way these swamp people lived didn’t make things easy as Susan and Clint try to solve this so they can be married on Sunday.

Entertaining once the MMA is put aside

The locale is lovingly brought to life and the “who done it” aspect for these three stories is also a thought-provoking puzzler.

I am not a fan of boxing or MMA or wrestling so that portion was not as interesting, although the author’s expertise is clear.

Bourg, an excellent Story Weaver

The plot twists and details hold the reader's interest. I was most impressed, however, at the dearth of comma errors. Many modern authors overuse commas incorrectly, but Bourg proves to be not only great at telling a story but also good with punctuation, grammar, and mechanics. Bravo!

This was a great series!

The characters ruled the day in these stories. I liked book #6 really good tale. The mystery within a circle of mysteries made the books interesting. Once again I didn't know the guilty party until the very end. That is a Bourg "Got You Moment!" Long live the Big Gator.

A proper Thriller

These books have all the right ingredients for a good thriller. There’s plenty of action, the right amount of romance and hardly any long or difficult words which makes it available for anyone with the ability to read for their enjoyment. I’m looking forward to the next trilogy.

Solid Crime Fiction

Although these are books 4-6, you can jump right in and not feel like you've missed anything. Each book resolves it's crime/mystery. The continuity is in the lives of the main characters.
I enjoyed all books, and found the characters engaging.

God story

Lot's of twists and turns. The suspects appear, they're justified as a possible killer and then dismissed. A super ending with the actual killer a shocking surprised, but wait it's not over. Like I ssid, a great ending.

Still Good; Still Marred ...

Like the earlier books, this one is still a great story, well told. Also like the previous books, Bourg REALLY needs to get, and make use of a good thesaurus.

Easy Reading

Easy reading, short chapters 3 to 5 minutes so it's easy to put down and pick up a short time later, enjoyable stories but it appears in all 3 books every family has a dysfunctional member, be it killer/psycho or just plain nuts.

I love this series!

If not for the lack of editing this would have gotten five stars. The story and pace are great, just like the previous books, it just needs a professional edutir.

Having just finished books 1 to 3, I immediately logged in and bought books 4 to 6. It took me a week to read the six books, I couldn't put them down. Just as well we're in Covid lockdown and I didn't have to go to work.
