Denise Armstrong and her family and friends were prepared to survive the economic collapse of the United States. Their preparations got them through a brutal winter and an attack by renegade thugs. Will their preparations help them survive the inevitable war that has come to the United States?
This is the second and final book in this short apocalypse series and I enjoyed it. After having nightmares about an EMP wiping out their systems, Denise and the people at the farm decide to take precautions and protect what they can. They are also trying to add extra protection to the farm and their people, while trying to scavenge supplies they might need if they are taking in more people. The farm kids want to be trained as a home guard militia so they can contribute something constructive. An EMP does hit, targeting the military base at Fort Bragg. The General had already evacuated most of his people and equipment and they set off to the area around the farm where they can set up a new base at the airport and school, and start repairing nearby houses with help from the farm people to get civilians back into a new community. But with a sleeper cell working in the area and a possible traitor at the base, things could go south in a hurry.
This two book series focuses on building a community of friends in a disaster. The first book focused a lot on preparation as the economic collapse picked up speed. We saw the disaster unfold and saw the farm becoming a safe community, while facing the challenges of raiders and supplies. In this book we see the farm expanding as military allies come to the area. I enjoyed seeing the changes to the area and the emotional drama of the characters as good and bad things happened around them. These apocalypse authors are also not afraid to kill off a popular character, which I did curse the author for doing in this book! My only complaint is that we never got to see the war outside of the town. We hear snippets about the mad soldier in charge of the rebel forces and what he is doing to the innocent from afar but we don't see him and we are only told of his downfall in a second hand conversation so the book did fizzle out a bit. This series needed to be a trilogy to get a showdown between the good and bad guys! Although I didn't get that, I did like the books.
While I enjoy reading about how people prepare for bad-times-to-come, things went a little too easily for the protagonist of this story and her followers. It was like the author had a fantasy of how she’d like her own future to play out and wrote it down in book form. Most of the characters were one-dimensional, including the main character. Rather like a Mary Sue, she had no flaws or false beliefs to overcome in order to reach her goal of surviving. Also, there was no romantic tension between the main character and her future love interest. I just couldn’t get behind the love aspect of the story, no matter how in-the-background it was meant to be. Also, in any well-written story, the antagonists (read “villains”) can be considered the heroes of their own story. Meaning, they have a real, solid code by which they live and well-thought-out reasons for believing that what they are doing is right. While the conclusions these villains draw may be/are often lamentable, there has to be a believable reason for why they follow the path they’re on. Here, however, they are (again) one-dimensional and just evil for the sake of having a bad guy in the story, rather like mustache-twirlers of the silent movie era. On top of this, the ending was rushed, as though the author got tired of writing and decided it was time to close out the story. All in all, the story was mediocre at best and not a satisfying read. 2-1/2 Stars.
Read both books and sorry that they ended, very good read ,in my opinion a 10 instead of a five. I would hope if anything like this would happen that people could become what these folks did, after all we do live in a great country and everyone needs to believe this and find there heart and love to survive. Well done!!
Well Diana Anderson, I am very pleased to have found your books! A different kind of story, and well written. A softer way of getting across things that can actually occur in our country. My hope is that books such as your two will be read by many folks and they will learn from them. Thank you for your energy and talent.
I love the post apocalyptic genre and I enjoyed reading these two stories about real community efforts, helping others, being prepared and fighting g for what's important! The details in these stories really got me thinking that it is possible to survive but also wonder at those who don't want to be a part of something bigger and more wonderful. Loved the story!
If you want to see the future, read this book. She naked it with how things will fall. The storyline was wonderful. This has been my top end of times book. And I've read pretty much all of them. It also showed me I'm not quite as prepared as I thought I was. 10 out of 10!!
I really enjoyed the characters and the way they interacted and respected each other. I also appreciate that it didn't start with an EMP. The financial collapse makes so much more sense to me. And finally, I really liked that the main characters were not a bunch of macho tough people, but just honest people doing their best.
This two-book series is an excellent portrayal of what life could be like after a major event, whether natural (hurricane, etc.) or man-made (EMP, etc.).
I really like this two book series. So we'll written packed with information from beginning to end. Characters you wanted to follow. What do you think would happen today if our economy crashed? Reading this series have me insight and ideas.
Nice ending. Enjoyed the storyline. Did not like reading day by day events. All it did was remind me to clean my house, cook, pick weeds in my garden and care for the animals.
The preparations are a little much as you need to be rich to prepare. The character are too botch and we'll written. The conflicts are well thought out and interesting. Very satisfying read.
I love the fact that Ms. Anderson can write without profanity. That was the reason for 5 stars. Like the first book this one lapsed into a lot of unnecessary information.
I was really disappointed in this sequel. I want my money back. I have never been this disappointed in a sequel. I only bought the sequel because the first book was excellent. It is good for putting yourself to sleep!
One of the best series that I have read. Both books should be read by everyone. A great storyline about what might happen in the near future. I highly recommend these two books.
Reading this book was parallel to the times we are living in now. I fear we are headed in that direction already. I wish everyone would read this book! It was well written and not wordy. One of the best books I read.
I really love this series. Wonderful, hardworking characters.. Interesting storyline and lots of action plus great info for prepping. Can’t wait to read more by this author.
The first book I didn’t care for because it was very political in a negative way. This book, was very different in its political aspects. I enjoyed the story very much.
