An Apocalyptic Thriller (Winner of ABR’s Listener’s Choice Thriller of the Year 2018!)
Jesse Townsend has made it as far as Arkansas on his trek from Colorado to Tennessee in his search for his sister, Molly. Trouble has found him once again and delayed his journey. His sense of justice puts him right in the middle of a power struggle. Which side will prevail? And, at what costs to both sides?
Bird’s third novel in the Society Lost series, The Tree of Penance (A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Thriller) is full of nail-biting action. The book is so smoothly written that you don’t realize how far you’ve read until you are finished. It’s an interesting read with both heartbreaking sadness and satisfaction.
If you are fond of tales from the old West, you will certainly enjoy the feeling that this story brings. Jesse is reminiscent of Josey Wales whose character was made famous by Clint Eastwood. I believe Jesse is more of a gentleman than Josey and more willing to help others.
How do I review Steven Bird's works without repeating myself? It is getting very difficult to find ways of saying just how much I like this Author's works. His mastery of the word and his ability to hold you in thrall is nothing short of awesome! Now to the book, The Tree of Penance: Society Lost, Volume 3 is another great story in a post apocalyptic world gone mad. Following the characters in this series provides an intimate look into the human psyche in a Post Apocalyptic world. From astoundingly good to slimy evil Steven Bird captures the essence of all of humanities facets. Overall a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I've said before, if you aren't familiar with Steven Bird's works, Get started reading them now!
Jessie just seems to walk into trouble in his search for his sister. Once again he finds himself squaring of with a group of hostiles preying on their fellow man. Jessie befriends a family and helps them overcome their oppressors. This was a great read I highly recommend this series to any dystopian fans.
I really enjoyed this story of ex-Sheriff Jesse Townsend who is trying to make his way across America to find his sister in Tennessee. I loved how the author successfully mixed man-made post-apocalypse modern times with old west type western. He made the characters feel real and you quickly become invested in Jesse and his new found friends survival. The authors great descriptive writing and the narrators use of voice, tone and intonation bring the story to life. You can really feel the horror, pain and struggles the characters go through. The story illustrates well how warped, cruel and depraved some people can become, while others rise to the occasion and show the beauty and strength humans are capable of. This story is gritty, heart wrenching and violent, and it keeps your attention right to the end. This was the first audiobook I have listened to in the Society Lost series and I will definitely be listening to the rest.
We’re invited to a taught, fast paced thriller reminiscent of an old fashioned Kentucky feud. We have three families with a long history of hostility and our fair-haired hero, former sheriff Jesse Townsend in the middle. Throw in a little religious zealotry, old vendettas, shifting alliances, kidnapping, with plenty of gunfire and you have the makings for a tense and exciting story. When retribution for wrong doings came, it came hard and without remorse. Mr. Bird did a fine job winding up this series and narration by J. Scott Bennett was excellent. Four.point.five. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.
Oh wow! Yeah, it's certainly a good one that's worth reading. This time Jessie is in the hills of Arkansas as he continues his journey to Tennessee to find his sister. This story points out the depths of which humans can sink, and the heights to which they can soar when there are no laws enforced, nor rules to abide by. Very well detailed and written, Steven Bird. Congratulations on a job well done. I learned something about quarter horses, and a little about long guns. Mack and Hank are now my favorite horses. Yes, I recommend this book. Fans of Jessie Townsend will love it. As always, happy reading.
This has started to follow a familiar formula: Jessie comes upon good people being harmed by bad people and decides to help. This had a lot of the mystical and religious overtones which at time bog down the story. On the plus side, this book, like the previous ones are well written and I have also come to like Jessie and his innate decency and moral code. I also like the characters that were his focus in this story, Isaac Clanton and the Williams family, enough so that I kind of wish Jessie would settle there. Goodness, the bad guy, Jacob, is one of the most sadistic people that has appear in most any book of this genre. I look forward to Jessie's adventures in the next book.
I found it very intriguing. A suspenseful tale told in the not too far future. It is an post-apocalyptic setting with a western feel. The heroes just want to survive in a world where evil villains have taken over. One act of kindness changes the world for an old timer and causes a chain reaction in the small town he is from. Well written characters and an interesting plot keeps you reading and waiting for what will happen next. This is the third book in the series, I'm going to go back and read to the first two since I enjoyed it so much.
I think I need to go back and listen to the first two books in the series before being able to accurately review, and I'm going to. Book 3 was GREAT!!
It's interesting that three different narrators did this collection - usually I find it hard to get back into it with a different narrator. I of course am partial to J. Scott Bennett, he's awesome and always does an outstanding job.
This was a very entertaining and powerful story, I really enjoyed it! :) I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Once again, Steve Bird has written a totally believable and gripping story of the further trials of Sheriff Jessie Townsend. I love how the words in the story create a movie in my mind! The story grips you and won't let you stop reading. I started the book this morning and just finished. I never hesitate to recommend a Steven Bird book! You'll love this one. I only have one question....where is book 4???
Enjoyed this audiobook and listened mostly in my car today. This is my first book by Steven Bird and it will not be my last. The author kept the story moving, it was entertaining and gruesome at times. I enjoyed cheering on Isaac and Jessie and hoping they would make it to the end. The narrator was spot on in his portrayal of the characters, and J. Scott Bennett remains my favorite voice in audiobooks. Excellent novel and the perfect length audible book.
In the third installment of Steven Birds’ Society Lost series, Jessie makes new friends, helps right some wrongs, and keeps his moral compass on path. This is the best book yet in this series. Bird has a lyrical writing style that sucks the reader into the world he’s creating. I can not recommend this book enough!
I'm sorry for not reviewing the first and second books in this series, but I was just too anxious to keep reading! Yes! I was that much into the story. If this type of book interests you, you'll love it!
I wish we had a Jesse running the country. Maybe we could find honor and morality again. This is a large reason I enjoy this writer. I hope Jesse keeps helping as he continues his search.
I found this book to be good, but not greatMaybe if I would have read the first 2 it would have been better..It was more violent than most right off the bat. J Scott Bennett was the perfect narrator.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Ok just finished, The tree of penance by Mr Steven Bird, and I just have to say, HOLLY CRAP WOW !!!! This Book is GNARLY. If this was a movie you would be gasping in shock while covering your eyes but peeking through your fingers. This is absolutely a must read.
Very good but also a very disturbing story. It's nice to know there are good people in this story but very sad to note that there are a lot disturbing people as well. I guess that's what you get when you read a story such as this.
Fast reading!!! Different!!!! Just wish Jessie could have found love!
All the books I have read by Steven are so exciting , I don't see how he can come with all types of people and circumstances. And I feel safe that no porn-crap or over board bad language... Thank you
Isaac is amazing, a true gem of a character, wherever in your soul he came from, bravo!! this book flows, so very hard to put down, amazing thought process.
I love Jessie and all the other characters in this book. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend this book and all of Steven Bird’s books.
I liked the character development in this book. The sheriff can be two-dimensional at times, but he is deep enough to be interesting. If you are into end of the world stories, this is a good one.
A really great series! Holds the readers captivated and curious. I read all three books back to back, and I recommend everyone else to read the series this way. Steven Bird is a author to check out! I will be watching for his book's, and finding older work's from him. 📚
I agree with the author when he says " I personally think westerns and post-apocalyptic/collapse of society fiction have a lot in common." They do. This book is a great read. Bad things happen to good people. Bad people will rule if we don't have men like Isaac and Jessie to take a stand for what is right. I have enjoyed reading all of Steven Bird's book. Looking forward to reading more.
