Poor David has zero confidence. His boss treats him like crap, his mother berates him, and he’s too afraid to make a move on Anya, the police detective he has a crush on. All this changes when David saves the life of Macius, a voodoo priest. To show his appreciation, Macius promises to give David the life he’s always wanted. Macius creates a clone of David who he names “Dutch”. Dutch’s confidence and charm is exactly what David needs and David has Dutch pretend to be him to make his dreams come true. Too bad Dutch turns out to be a homicidal maniac with an insatiable thirst for violence and sex. When Dutch goes after Anya, David must find the confidence he’s never had to save him and the woman he loves from the devil himself.

David Calvo found out the hard way. He was a mild natured man who was regularly verbally abused by his shrew of a mother and his heartless boss. David was stuck taking care of Retha Calvo and he needed more money for her care even though though she did not appreciate his efforts. He needed a raise at his job badly. He also had an eye for the the pretty detective Anya Washington but did not have the courage to ask her out. So when an opportunity arose to where he could get some help from a magician/ voodoo practitioner, he took it. It was more trouble than what it was worth. His clone, Dutch was pure evil and reeked pure havoc, was David's dark side. Well, as it turned out, David did not need any help with getting Anya's attention as she was already attracted to him. They had to figure out how to get rid of Dutch and they did.
Stacey Deanne wrote a story that was difficult for me to read. Not that it was hard to read, the subject matter of rape and abuse was very difficult for me too handle. It was an intriguing paranormal story in that it taught a lesson, that one is better off to their own devices than relying on someone else to help with your personal short comings. There were just a few things left hanging in the story. Did David and Anya get their HEA.? How was Anya going to solve all of those murders now that Dutch was up in smoke and ashes? Inquiring minds are just curious to know.
This book was so good, I mean the characters especially David what a good and decent guy who can't catch a break and then there is Dutch a troublemaker and evil man. Anya is such a good woman and a great protector of her cousin Billie who also is a decent person whose went through some things but is trying to better herself. I hope we will get to read more on Anya and David in the future.
I like it! This was so different from anything else I've read. This book has a very nice flow to it, the progression was on point. I will definitely be recommending this book.
The novel was an enjoyable read. Great triller. However, the ending was abrupt. The book didn’t properly conclude, as if it structurally it stopped mid sentence. Could have been more complete.
