To win six Super Bowl championships is almost unheard of, but that's just what quarterback Tom Brady has accomplished during his time in the NFL. But Brady's path to success was more than a little rocky, and it's likely that few would have predicted his longevity in the league or his success during his high school or college career. After all, he wasn't the starting quarterback during much of that time, and he wasn't fast or muscular. Still, Brady had something that others apparently lacked--confidence and a competitive spirit that kept him fighting and leading his teammates even when they were underdogs and games seemed lost. In this biography, author Dan Wetzel begins his story with an important moment in his subject's life--in this case, the New England Patriot's come-from-behind-win over Atlanta in the Super Bowl--and then moves backward in time to describe the events that brought him there. The inclusion of Brady's struggles to be taken seriously as an athlete and his determination to never quit and be the best player he could be is important for youngsters today to consider since many may think that everything just falls in the laps of sports stars. While luck sometimes has something to do with how things turn out, it's also just as clear that hard work and persistence are a necessary part of the formula. I came away even more impressed with Tom Brady that I was before reading this book. I did find some parts of the book repetitive and the gushing prose a bit too much at times, but football fans will love the play by play of several important games and this glimpse into this fierce competitor. I wasn't a fan of the artwork in this particular book since it seemed to make various body parts such as his hands larger than life and seemed almost to be a caricature of Brady and his teammates. As I finished the book, I wondered how it is possible for someone to still seem or be confident even when others doubt him/her. I also appreciated how the author points out that Brady was interested in his education and degree as much as his athletic endeavors.

This is an engaging biography of football superstar Tom Brady. It tells of how he grew up playing football and other sports. It also talks about how he was overlooked by some big name teams and how he was doubted by a lot of people. However, he went on to lead his team to 6 Super Bowl championships and earned 3 MVP (Most Valuable Player) awards. It is very informative and the information seems to be accurate. However, I have no way of knowing this for sure because the author has not included any source notes or citations whatsoever to indicate where they gathered the material for this book. There are also a few graphic novel type illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. They do not add anything to the story. As an information professional, I cannot recommend this book very highly since the author does not cite their sources. Also, there are not any of the other things you would expect to find at the end, like suggestions for further reading or websites to explore, etc. It's sad, really, because there was so much potential there.
