My only regret in reading Snake Bite, the first book in the Alpha Squad series, and Retribution, the second, is that now I have to wait to read more of the story. I kind of wish I’d waited till it was done and then binge-read it because I absolutely love the story and the characters, especially the sexy and dangerous Alejandro aka General Cobra. The books are an adrenaline and hormone jolt, and who doesn’t need both occasionally? :-)
In Retribution, Danielle (first introduced as the amnesiac Phoenix in Snake Bite) is on the run from both her evil husband, Max, and from the squad she was part of in Snake Bite. But the squad finds her, and after a short fight, they overcome her and take her back with them to their New Mexico base. They need her to help capture Max before he sells his memory-wiping drug to the highest bidder.
The action is nonstop and the sexual tension between Danielle and the squad’s leader, Cobra (real name Alejandro—can’t you just imagine murmuring that as you snuggle up against him?) is like an electrical current running through the book. Is this series plot-driven or character-driven? I’d say an equal mix of both, but for me, the characters are what really stands out with their intense feelings of love, lust, friendship, betrayal, and greed. None are all good or all bad, and that makes them them real to the reader. I’d recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a high-action story with characters you wish existed in real life.
