If you like Civil War stories, romance, and heart-pounding action, you will love this book!” --- Kathi Macias, award-winning writer of more than 50 books, including Red Ink, Golden Scrolls Novel of the Year.
Set in 1861, Kate is to stay with a Great Aunt after sneaking onto her father's ship. While staying with her great aunt, Kate meets the handsome Lieutenant Clay. Events happen that make her not trust men, but when the enemy, a union soldier, washes up on shore, Kate learns to love her enemy. The setting of this story was fun, and I enjoyed the characters. Kate is our main character, and she definitely grows throughout the story. There were times I was annoyed with her but in the end, I ended up liking her. I liked that she learned to trust again. The Christian content in this story is really good. I loved her aunt Sally. She was such a strong character, always guiding Kate to the right thing. I also liked John and Bessie they were great supporting characters, and I liked they got a happy ending. There were some parts of the book that were a little too slow for me and other parts that were too fast. I wish it had a little more consistent pacing. Overall, the story was good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Marilyn Turk's Rebel Light is a fast-paced historical romance set during the Civil War.
Katherine McFarlane wants to feel like she has a purpose with rumors of an upcoming war. She doesn't expect she'll end up living with her eccentric aunt, though! I loved watching how Kate was willing to help out with whatever she could, even if it wasn't the type of work with which she was accustomed. I loved watching how Kate was a light to everyone around her and made everyone a better person for knowing her.
Speaking of light, I loved all the ways Marilyn told the theme of the importance of spreading His light in everything we do. The lighthouses, Kate's example, the example of other people, the motif of light throughout the book; it would be great to analyze in an essay (although I won't subject you to that).
Aside from Kate, there was a fantastic cast of characters. Some of my favorites included Aunt Sally, John, Bessie, Joshua, and Cora. I love how Marilyn made each character so essential to the story and used each of the characters to further the themes of the story.
I loved the world Marilyn gave us a glimpse of through this story. There are three other books available currently in the series, and I hope to get to read more about these characters!
Overall, I really enjoyed the themes and characters in this book. If you enjoy historical fiction, you should definitely consider reading this book!
I received a copy of this book from the author. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.
I loved reading this remarkable and powerful story Marilyn Turk penned in Rebel Light. This Civil War love story set in Pensacola and Apalachicola, Florida with well developed characters that faced life with faith. I loved the secondary characters of John and Bessie, free slaves of two different McFarlane families, and the dialect Turk used for them added depth and the realistic component to this beautiful story. Rebel Light is filled with action, Southern history during 1861–1862, romance and God’s Word. I could see the action of the characters, the landscape, uniformed men, the ships and the forces of Mother Nature and the lighthouse in my mind with the descriptive words used by Turk. The underlying theme of God’s faithfulness to protect, give peace instead of fear, wisdom and guidance, forgiveness and mercy, and His unconditional love added so much to this remarkable historical fiction romance story. Readers of historical fiction will appreciate all the research Marilyn Turk put into this beautiful story with the authenticity of the ships, ports, dialect, separation of family members, trades among the countries prior to the blockade by the Union.
I received a complimentary copy of Rebel Light from the author as a winner on a blog post. I was not required to write a review, but have shared my honest opinion of this enthralling story by Marilyn Turk. I look forward to reading the sequel, Revealing Light and other books by this gifted author of historical fiction.
Rebel Light by Marilyn Turk - Review by Aaron Crews
Attention-grabbing Christian Romance Adventure! Marilyn Turk crafts an excellent read that held my interest. Characters came alive as they struggled through daily life during the Civil War in Apalachicola, Florida. As a native Floridian familiar with this area, I was extremely impressed with the accuracy and attention to detail for this time period. It is obvious Marilyn Turk spent a lot of time researching the historical significance of Apalachicola during the Civil War. I was intrigued with the twists and turns as the story unfolded. I looked forward to seeing what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a historical Christian Romance novel.
Civil War, 1800's, light house, an unusual group of people living together/nearby, romance, mysterious stranger... all in one book! What else could I want? I enjoyed reading Rebel Light very much and I found a new writer!
I found many reasons to like Rebel Light by Marilyn Turk. It takes place during the Civil War, but in a place I don’t normally think about being part of the War- Florida. It also is set in lesser-known (to me)cities: Pensacola and Apalachicola. (I had to look up my own map.) It involves a major storm. The strict, eccentric character, Aunt Sally, turns out to be one of the best, solidly likable and godly secondary characters. The main character, Kate, has to grow up in many ways through the book. We see both people who are extremely prejudiced and others who understand that all are created equal- and treat others as such. We see true faith lived out, attracting others.
Kate, a sea captain’s nearly grown daughter, decides to stow away on her father’s ship, rather than flee to a relative’s home away from Pensacola. Her father then leaves her in the care of an aunt she barely knows and a beloved, free servant. Kate moves from a life of semi-luxury to feeling like a field hand as she works the farm with her aunt and others. Can Kate stop thinking of herself first and begin to put others’ needs before her own? She will have plenty of opportunities to make a choice either way. And will she find the love she is looking for, or will she be known for being single as her aunt has been for so long?
I loved that the repeated answer comes from different people when problems arise- “Pray!” The establishment of daily oral Bible reading with household members creates a very real unity that becomes unbreakable.
If you enjoy clean, historical fiction about the Civil War with threads of faith, Rebel Light is a great book to pick up. I picked up the next three in the series when I finished this one!
I received the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“Sometimes when things don’t work out the way we expected, we have to understand there must be a reason. We must look for God’s plan in the matter. What lessons can we learn? Is there anything He wants to teach us?”
“Mr. Harris, the good Lord’s taken care of me this long; I don’t expect He’ll stop now. I just trust Him to do it, that’s all. Didn’t He say in the Good Book, ‘Fear not, for the Lord is with thee’?”
“…sometimes de Lawd puts thoughts in yo’ head at just de right time. So I don’t argue with Him. If dere’s one thing I’se learned in my life, it’s don’t argue with de Lawd. If He say do somethin’, you just go ahead and does it.”-John
“But these days we can’t always do what we want when duty calls.”- Joshua
The story is set in 1861 when war was imminent. Katherine stows away on her father’s ship so she won’t be away from him. Needless to say it doesn’t go well for Katherine. Her father detours and takes her to her eccentric aunt in a home that needs work. It will be a big surprise for Katherine when she has to get up early every morning to work alongside her aunt in the fields for longs days. I liked that it is set in Florida and features lighthouses.
Katherine feels her days with work but is interested in finding a church to attend. When she goes there she finds that certain pews are reserved. She can’t understand why the negroes are being sit up in the balcony. Jt she does like the preacher and how he believes that everyone should be treated equally.
Clay is a rebel soldier who meets Katherine at her grandmother’s place. I’m not sure he was someone to be trusted. He does catch Katherine’s attention so we will see. What a surprise when Clay invites Katherine to the Cotton Ball. An unsavory man has taken interest in Katherine and corners her on her way home. I wonder what Clay will think when he finds out who the man is?
I didn’t like how Clay talked about John and Bessie. He warns Katherine to “be careful about being too friendly with those people.” What an unsettling thing to say. Is Clay as upstanding as he portrays himself to be? Can he be trusted?
With news of the war starting to break out near the town, Katherine and her aunt get concerned. Will all the men leave to fight and leave the town with no protection? Clay does something that causes Katherine not to trust him. She tells others she will never be able to forgive him. God will have to deal with her bitterness.
After a storm Katherine finds a man washed ashore. He is the enemy but Katherine feels she must take care of him. Her issue of trust does make her question if she can truly let him stay and recover. The adventure continues when Katherine plans a way to warn her father to not come ashore. Will she be able to keep her father from running into a trap? Get ready for an adventure in learning to trust, friendship, helping others and having faith even in the midst of danger.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate. The review is my own opinion.
Rebel Light by Marilyn Turk is a charming Christian historical novel and the first book in the Coastal Lights Legacy which promises to be fantastic. The setting is 1861 in the American south. It is a time of turmoil as the American Civil War begins. There is a question of trust as neighbours and friends choose sides. God loves all His children and He can be trusted. He commands us to love our enemies and to pray for them. Within minds, the enemy builds up to be monsters. “So this is what the enemy looks like. She had not expected him to appear so normal.” The enemy is just the same as you and me. A uniform and rank should mean trust. But clothes do not make a man. There are some unscrupulous men within the book. Likewise going to church does not make people Christian. A heart change and a life surrendered to God are the hallmarks of a Christian. God does not want us to be slaves. He wants all men to be free. Within the novel there are those who believe this and there are those do not. The free men who reside with great aunt Sally are treated with love and care. There is an unbreakable bond between all members of the household. We need God’s light to shine in our hearts. The extinguishing of the light in the lighthouse is symbolic of the dark period in American history as the civil war begins. God’s Word unites us. “A sense of family knit the odd group together as they shared God’s Word.” We need to fill our hearts with His truth. When God speaks we need to have hearts and ears in tune with His. “If He say do somethin’, you just go ahead and does it.” The richest people are those with God in their hearts. “He had lost what little he had, yet he still found reason to be happy.” I loved Rebel Light. It was a perfectly delightful read with warm, realistic characters who put God at the centre of their lives. I received a free copy of the book from the author. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoy Christian Historical Fiction books. Rebel Light by Marilyn Turk is the lastest in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Coastal Lights Legacy series. I am excited to read this series, especially since I am reading it from the first book.
WOW, what an intriguing and well written start to this series. The setting is 1861, Civil war period in Pensacola and Apalachicola, Florida. The main characters in this book are Kate McFarlane, Lieutenant Clay Harris and Kate's Aunt Sally. Kate has a rebellious lifestyle and in the midst of the war hides on her Dad's Ship, as he is a Merchant Business Captain. She is discovered and sent to live with her Aunt Sally, in Apalachicola. Kate and Aunt Sally begin taking care of a Shipwrecked Solider, Joshua Jones. Joshua is a Union Solider, the enemy, but the Love and Tender Care that Kate and Aunt Sally give to him is unmeasurable. Lt. Clay, Confederate Solider, has growing interest in Kate, Kate is very unsure about Lt. Clay as his actions towards many are unkind and not the type of person Kate wants to be associated with. Kate really shows her "Grown Up" side when she has important decisions to make for the safety of so many. There are many twists and turns in this storyline that it keep me reading until I finished it. The story is one of Trust, Kindness and God's plans are greater then ours. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romantic Fiction. FANTASTIC BOOK!
I’m a sucker for all things the Civil War. It’s a fascination that began when I started reenacting with my family at the age of seven. And even though I’m not actively reenacting anymore I still love learning everything I can. I’m a history nerd or history buff or however you want to categorize that.
Another fun fact about me is that I’m enamoured with lighthouses. I’ve actually never been to one before but it’s on my bucket list. I love reading stories about them and their history.
So, if you’re ready for a bit of a history lesson, plus some romance, a bit of suspense, and an all-around good read this is the book for you!
It’s the Civil War. Florida has succeeded from the Union and things are starting to get intense. Kate is a little rebel against the things going on around her. Will her acts of rebellion get her in trouble? Or will she make waves?
Also, we’ve got a guy who washes on shore that she saves. Between him and another man, there are two love interests. Which will she choose?

Rebel Light, by Marilyn Turk is the first book in the Coastal Lights Legacy series. This is an enjoyable story that takes place during the Civil War on the coast of Apalachicola, Florida. This is a well written, easy to read and imagine story. I enjoyed the setting of this story and the characters so much. I especially enjoyed the character of Kate's aunt. She is so caring and loving toward others. I also enjoyed how caring Kate is toward others, especially the Union soldier that washed toward their shore following the hurricane. I quickly found myself disliking Clay, when put in a position of authority he used his relationship with Kate for his good, going so far as to think he could enter their home.
This is an enjoyable story that shows how pasts can affect our futures. For Kate's aunt left her church while mourning her husband and how she felt about returning after so long. It was fun to see the knowledge Kate had about the items in her lost uncles chest and how she was able to use them. This is such a nice story I found myself wanting to keep read and I look forward to the rest in the series.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.
Katherine McFarlane must leave her home in Pensacola, Florida, when war breaks out, while her father, a sea captain, continues his merchant business. She is sent to live with her great aunt Sally, who she has never met, in Apalachicola. Immediately, she catches the eye of Lieutenant Clay Harris, a Confederate officer.
The Union army soon blocks the harbor from anyone trying to enter or leave. During a hurricane, one of the sailors, Joshua Jones, is washed overboard. Kate and Aunt Sally hide him while tending to his injuries and, despite being the "enemy", feelings develop between the two.
Before leaving, Kate's father had promised to return for her birthday. Kate now must warn him not to come. She needs someone to help her, but which one can she trust.
I enjoyed this first book in Marilyn Turk's new series, Coastal Lights Legacy. I had never read a Civil War story set in this area. Aunt Sally was a delightful character, as were John and Bessie, although their dialect was a bit hard to understand. If not for the poor editing, this would have been an excellent read.
I won a copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.
This was an interesting novel during the Civil War, whereas it took place in Florida and also dealt with lighthouses. War is on the doorstep and Kate cannot bear to be away from her merchant father, so she stows away on his ship. She, of course cannot stay when she is found, so he sends her to her eccentric Aunt Sally. In Sally's care, Kate learns a whole different side of life, one that you work for your board and keep. Everyone who wants to eat, works, and this is a bit of a culture shock for Kate who was a bit pampered before.
However, during this time that Kate waits for her father's return, she matures, makes lasting friendships, and two possible romances emerge. Kate also learns who the enemy is and who the enemy isn't. This was an interesting read, and I enjoyed the different atmosphere in Florida concerning the war. There was much at stake and danger abounded, not only for her, but those she loves.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
Marilyn Turk’s Rebel Light is a historical romance set in 1861. Florida has seceded from the Union, and Kate McFarlane rebels against her father’s wishes for her to travel with one of her aunts to a safer location. That action changed her life in ways she could not have imagined. Living with an eccentric aunt she never really knew and being courted by a Confederate officer, Lieutenant Clay Harris, Kate has to decide what is truly important.
When a hurricane brings an injured Union officer into her life, Kate is determined to keep him safe from Clay while helping him heal. She also fights her budding attraction to the Union officer.
I loved how the author built the storyline, including John (Kate’s family’s freed negro) along with her aunt’s freed negro, Bessie. The budding romance between these two servants adds dimension to this story.
So, if you want a historical romance, check out Marilyn Turk’s Rebel Light.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
I thought this was a good story and liked the characters. I liked how it was set at the start of the Civil War and was about the southern blockades, which was something that I didn’t know much about. I liked how this story helped us to see the true nature of people and to not judge them before we know them. I liked Aunt Sally a lot and how see saw all people as God’s children and helped Kate to learn that as well. I thought this author gave us a good insight into the early days of the war and what people would have had to deal with as they decided what side to be on. I am definitely interested in the other books in the series.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This is a great Civil War period read. I really enjoyed it from page 1 till the end. It was a very interesting read with some unexpected turns in the story, which I really liked. The book is during a time of great stress in our country and deals well with the events of these times and is heartwarming and a Christian read. The characters you either loved or absolutely didn't and the descriptions of the times and places were well done without being overdone. It was a very enjoyable book and I can't wait to read the next book!
I won a copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own.
This book was a great read. It kept me turning the pages. It is a clean love story. This book took a turn that is unexpected when Kate and a free slave find and rescue a Union sailor. The ending was the GREATEST!!!!!. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. I love the character Aunt Sally. This story clearly shows that some people aren’t what they want people to believe they are. Kate learns that God loves all people regardless of what side they are on and even if they are your enemies. I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own
This is the 1st book of Marilyn's I have read, but look forward to more!! I Love how His was in their lives from the beginning of the story. The way the Love story of Kate & Joshua unfolds truly is of God's doing. I can feel myself in Kate's shows as though I were living there with them. The Faith & Love the family all have for God is felt all through the story. Can't wait for the next book!
I loved the characters, the setting, and the story. It is so fun to read books set in unusual places and through the eyes of new characters gain a new perspective on the history that is going on. Marilyn's books are always well written and fun!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A wonderful novel about love in the midst of the civil is war. Great characters and so realistic, especial ly the speech iof John (and Bessie) that was realistic of that time. God's faith brought them all through. Way to make a !lighthouse pay a big role Marilyn Turk. Another great historical Christian story.
Marilyn Turk pulled me in from the first with her fast paced Cvil War story. Set in Apalachicola, Florida, Kate McFarland stays with her aunt, and finds life different than expected, but with adventure and love. I highly recommend Rebel Light.
I don't think I've ever read a book focused on a southern town and its people during the Civil War. Turk obviously researched this time and place, and introduced me to a family who loved God and the African Americans (former slaves) who lived with them. An enjoyable read.
Looking back on this dark time in US history, we find people looking forward to a time of peace. The turmoil of the day makes one struggle through toward a light of strength and hope. Bravo, Marilyn!
I love American history and historical fiction, but quite often, especially when it comes to books set in the South, I get frustrated because it seems like the author's never been here. Not so with Marilyn Turk! In Rebel Light, Turk paints an accurate picture of life in Florida, including the oppressive humidity and mosquitoes. The plot takes place at the start of the Civil War and includes a frustrated young woman, a wise old great-aunt, two servants, and a mysterious stranger. There's intrigue and romance. Yes, it is a Christian novel, but not a holier-than-thou sermon. It's about God's love and how He cares for us all. A delightful read!
Stowing away on her father’s ship, Kate hoped she would be able to stay on board, instead of heading north with her aunt and friends. With the civil war looming, however, her father wanted her in a safe place, not surrounded by sailors. The decision was made to leave her at great-aunt Sally’s in Apalachicola where she could help her relative. Kate’s interest in a very old signaling lantern was able to bring safety to her father at a time when the seas were not always safe.
The author takes us back to what it must have been like to have freed slaves working with you, while the war fought for the freedom of others. Prejudice runs deep everywhere. For Kate, there is much to learn about trust, survival and more.
This Coastal Lights Legacy Book One was received through Winged Publications and CelebrateLit. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
Since I reside in Florida, and have been to the Cape St. George Lighthouse, I was excited to read Rebel Light. The Civil War era is also one of my favorites in history. Add in lighthouses in general, and it's simply a must-read for me.
I enjoyed Rebel Light, and really felt for Kate. The uncertainty of what was happening to her home in Pensacola in Pensacola, and concern for her sea captain father are deeply felt. Then there is Lieutenant Clay Harris. Can, or should, she trust him?
This story also includes a hurricane, of which I know plenty, since I do live in Florida. You will definitely want to add this to your TBR list! Even better, this is book one of the Coastal Lights Legacy series; I eagerly look forward to reading the rest of the series!
