Too Close to Home

Linwood Barclay, critically acclaimed author of No Time for Goodbye, brings terror closer than ever before in a thriller where murder strikes in the place we feel safest of all. Promise Falls isn't the kind of community where a family is shot to death in their own home. But that is exactly what happened to the Langleys one sweltering summer night, and no one in this small upstate New York town is more shocked than their next-door neighbors, Jim and Ellen Cutter. They visited for the occasional barbecue, and their son, Derek, was friends with the Langleys? boy, Adam; but how well did they really know their neighbors? That's the question Jim Cutter is asking, and the answers he's getting aren't reassuring. Albert Langley was a successful, well-respected criminal lawyer, but was he so good at getting criminals off that he was the victim of revenge ? a debt his innocent family also paid in blood? From the town's criminally corrupt mayor to the tragic suicide of a talented student a decade before, Promise Falls has more than its share of secrets. And Jim Cutter, failed artist turned landscaper, need look no further than his own home and his wife Ellen's past to know that things aren't always what they seem. Suddenly the Cutters must face the unthinkable: that a murderer isn't just stalking too close to home but is inside it already. For the Langleys weren't the first to die and they won't be the last.

Linwood Barclay is the #1 internationally bestselling author of seventeen novels for adults, including No Time for Goodbye, Trust Your Eyes and, most recently, A Noise Downstairs. He has also written two novels for children and screenplays.
Three of those seventeen novels comprise the epic Promise Falls trilogy: Broken Promise, Far From True, and The Twenty-Three. His two novels for children – Chase and Escape – star a computer-enhanced dog named Chipper who’s on the run from the evil organization that turned him into a super-pup.
Barclay’s 2011 thriller, The Accident, has been turned into the six-part television series L’Accident in France, and he adapted his novel Never Saw it Coming for the movie, directed by Gail Harvey and starring Eric Roberts and Emily Hampshire. Several of his other books either have been, or still are, in development for TV and film.
After spending his formative years helping run a cottage resort and trailer park after his father died when he was 16, Barclay got his first newspaper job at the Peterborough Examiner, a small Ontario daily. In 1981, he joined the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest circulation newspaper.
He held such positions as assistant city editor, chief copy editor, news editor, and Life section editor, before becoming the paper’s humour columnist in 1993. He was one of the paper’s most popular columnists before retiring from the position in 2008 to work exclusively on books.
In 2004, he launched his mystery series about an anxiety-ridden, know-it-all, pain-in-the-butt father by the name of Zack Walker. Bad Move, the first book, was followed by three more Zack Walker thrillers: Bad Guys, Lone Wolf, and Stone Rain. (The last two were published in the UK under the titles Bad Luck and Bad News.)
His first standalone thriller, No Time for Goodbye, was published in 2007 to critical acclaim and great international success. The following year, it was a Richard and Judy Summer Read selection in the UK, and did seven straight weeks at #1 on the UK bestseller list, and finished 2008 as the top selling novel of the year there. The book has since been sold around the world and been translated into nearly thirty languages.
Barclay was born in the United States but moved to Canada just before turning four years old when his father, a commercial artist whose illustrations of cars appeared in Life, Look and Saturday Evening Post (before photography took over), accepted a position with an advertising agency north of the border. Barclay, who graduated with an English literature degree from Trent University, in Peterborough, Ontario, was fortunate to have some very fine mentors; in particular, the celebrated Canadian author Margaret Laurence, whom Linwood first met when she served as writer-in-residence at Trent, and Kenneth Millar, who, under the name Ross Macdonald, wrote the acclaimed series of mystery novels featuring detective Lew Archer. It was at Trent that he met Neetha, the woman who would become his wife. They have two grown children, Spencer and Paige.

Wow. This book. Harlan Coben would be proud!

This book begins with 3 gruesome murders that seem to make no sense. 3 innocent people murdered in cold blood. As if that isn't horrifying enough, a young man is witness to it all. And from there the story ripples like the perfect storm.

Jim Cutter, a local lawn man is the father to the man who witnessed the entire killing spree. Once his son opens up to him about a missing computer, some low grade porn, and a floppy disk things start to add up. Jim begins to put two and two together and thinks maybe he knows why his neighbors were killed.

However, like Coben, Barclay takes you on a wild ride and makes the reader think they've figured it out when in reality they don't. On top of all this other stuff another story piles on... when the two join.. BAM! Fireworks!

Great story, well written characters, strong dialogue with some humor written into it, and a hell of a plot. If you love Harlan Coben you will thoroughly enjoy this novel.

This should be a movie and here are my picks for actors: (so far)...

Mayor Finley: Jason Alexander
Jim: Dennis Quaid
Ellen: Ellen Pompeo or Helen Hunt
Drew: Charlie Hunnam
Conrad: George Clooney
Derek: Garrett Hedlund

This was an exciting thriller with very memorable & lovable characters. Linwood Barclay in this novel titled 'To Close To Home' has managed to make the whole story of a 'family homicide gone wrong' seem quite realistic & very unputdownable.

In the novel, Derek a 17 year old teenager manages to crash into the neighbor's house, while they are away, to spend time there watching & reading pornography on an old computer. He wants to do much else there but manages to witness something horrible. Thus begins the tale of Jim Cutter who is Derek's down to earth & honest father who starts to suspect that his murdered neighbors may not have been the intended victims of a serial killing. Could it have been that it was his family that were to be killed that fateful evening between 7:00pm & 9:30pm? That is what this novel is all about.

I really enjoyed the book & felt it had that old world charm about it that made it even more enticing to read. The plot is unique, suspenseful & the characters are well developed. I especially loved Jim Cutter as a narrator & human being, watch out for him & his analysis of the whole mass murder in this fast-paced novel titled 'Too Close To Home'. I liked many other characters as well but will refrain from mentioning them so as not to hinder a reader's enjoyment of this much acclaimed & well written thriller.

There are a few issues with the editing of the book, sentence construction errors in key dialogues & the wrong placement of a words in a sentence which are glaring & cannot be overlooked. The only character in the plot that did not seem believable or entirely realistic was the wife of Jim Cutter named Ellen. Her dialogues with Jim after a certain point tends to get too stretched & repeated for comfort. Plot issues are present in plenty which is surprising. I will again refrain from mentioning these 'plot-holes' so that it may not mar the enjoyment of this thriller. One I shall mention, which pertains to the fact that in the beginning of the narrative, we are given to believe that there were two murderers. However, that gets overlooked & we land up with only one killer at the end of the text which is a discrepancy in the overall plot & the earlier notion of two murderers remains unexplained or skipped!

These & more editing issues are contained in this thriller. The climax of the tale is nerve-wrecking & highly thrilling which will keep you on the edge of your seat. The long speech of one particular character in the plot at the end of the tale is so beautifully written that it can bring a tear to one's eye. Overall a good read with a very exciting story line.

'Too Close To Home' gets 4 stars from me!

Talk about a thrilling read! I'd give this one 4.5 stars and would be lying if I called it anything less than excellent.

In Promise Falls, a triple homicide takes place one evening next door to the Cutter's abode. No one heard or saw what happened to the Langley's, but everyone is assuming it had something to do with Albert's job as the town's criminal attorney. As the book progresses, we learn that everyone in this town seems to have a secret, but the largest secrets seem to lie within the Cutter's own family. Throw in a corrupt mayor and a pompous college president and you have a recipe for a suspenseful read to keep you up all night.

I wanted to read this in one sitting but, alas, life happens and doesn't always allow that. :) Honestly, if it weren't for the slightly cheesy dialogue of Derek Cutter, the teenage son, in the prologue and a few other similar snippets, this book would have gotten a 5 star rating from me (although I feel I'm being a little picky). I found Ellen Cutter's character a little difficult to like, even after all the tension is resolved, but I think that added to the story for me. I did slightly wish we got to know the Langley family more through back telling of stories or something similar. Overall, this was a fantastic read and would recommend to anyone looking for a quick read. I'll definitely be looking into more Linwood Barclay novels immediately.

A Case of Mistaken Identity?...

TOO CLOSE TO HOME
by Linwood Barclay

No spoilers. 4 stars. The Langley family lived in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Promise Falls in upstate New York...

They were packing for a family vacation as Derek Cutter, their nextdoor neighbors' teenage son and BFF to their son Adam, hung around visiting...

All packed, the family finally departed, but Donna, Adam's mother, was feeling sick...

But unbeknownst to the Langleys...

Derek had slipped away and hidden himself in their crawlspace. He had planned to use their home while the family was away as a trysting place with his girlfriend Penny...

What Derek didn't expect was...

The Langleys returning home due to Donna's illness...

More unexpected was...

While hiding in the crawl, Derek witnessed the entire family being murdered. Now Derek was afraid to tell anyone that he had been hiding in the house when the murders occurred...

But...

Were the Langleys the intended victims, or was this a case of mistaken identity?...

This was an excellent whodunit mystery full of suspense and surprises.

This was my first book by this author and I found I enjoyed his writing style very much. He managed to weave an intriguing story which totally misled this reader. When the actual murderer was revealed I was quite surprised!
The book moves fast and is always interesting. It begins with a triple murder witnessed by a teenage boy and and continues gathering dead bodies right through to the end! I enjoyed the characters too although I could not understand Ellen's position most of the time. It was eventually revealed and for me was the only weak point in the whole story. Jim was excellent if rather inclined to act suddenly in quite extreme ways. At least he did not let himself be put upon:)
All in all a very enjoyable book and it has certainly made me want to read more of Linwood Barclay's writing.

Promise Falls, murder capital of the USA!

Don’t let anyone tell you differently! Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, St Louis? None of them holds a candle to small town Promise Falls, Maine! The final lesson for the Langley family is that Promise Falls is obviously a very dangerous place to live. Unbeknownst to Jim and Penny Cutter, their son, Derek, had a front row center seat to witness the murder of their next-door neighbours. Their life then quickly unravels as they learn, to their horrified dismay, that Detective Barry Duckworth has enough evidence to arrest their son and charge him with the murders.

TOO CLOSE TO HOME qualifies as one of the very best suspense thrillers that I’ve ever had the pleasure to read.

The depth and credibility of his entire cast of characters is simply breathtaking. His choice of Jim Cutter as the story’s narrator is perfect. Detective Barry Duckworth and the venal and intensely dislikable ne’er-do-well Trump wannabe, Randall Finley, are introduced for their deeper, more important roles in the upcoming Promise Falls trilogy. The action is gripping and, unlike so many other thrillers, never even approaches the limit of requiring suspension of realism or credibility. Not for a single moment is a reader tempted to ask themselves, “Now why on earth did he do that?” His pacing is perfect and the final revelation of the actual murderer arrives as an “out of left field” blindside that I can’t imagine any reader predicting before reaching that moment in the novel. And the novel ends with not a single thread left hanging in the wind!

Highly recommended.

I’m a big fan of Barclay’s novels and Too Close to Home doesn’t disappoint. This is classic Barclay with a few different story-lines weaving around the one mystery (in this case; who killed the Langleys and why?) with surprising revelations and jaw dropping twists. In this story Barclay highlights human weaknesses of infidelity, lying and long held secrets.

Once you have read one of Barclay’s novels you will be eager for more!

Seventeen-year-old Derek Cutter’s best friend Adam Langley was going away for a week with his parents, Albert and Donna; their house would be vacant for that period. But when the whole family was murdered in their home the night they were meant to be leaving, the people in the town of Promise Falls were shocked and saddened. Derek’s parents Jim and Ellen lived the closest to the Langley’s home but they hadn’t heard a thing. With the air conditioning blasting to compensate for the scorching summer conditions, no sound was heard from outside.

As investigations deepened, the police were puzzled – but with more questions than answers, even Jim Cutter’s suspicions seemed ludicrous. What on earth had happened that night? And why? And was it connected in any way to a ten year old suicide? The worst thing was – there was still a murderer out there and if he wasn’t caught soon, others could die…

Oh what a tangled web we weave!! Too Close to Home by Linwood Barclay is just that! A tangled web of intrigue, information and misinformation; lies and secrets – and then there’s murder and deception. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and can’t quite understand why it’s been sitting on my bookshelf for over four years! The gritty tension; the fast pace of the plot – all was designed to get the reader fully immersed – and I sure was! Highly recommended.

My first novel by Linwood Barclay and it was a real page turner. It starts with the triple murder of the Langley family in a quiet neighbourhood in a small town and it was hard to work out which way it was going to go. Were the family of three murdered because of the father, Albert Langley's job as a lawyer or was something else going on? Everyone is puzzled as to the motive and who the killers might have been and Barclay keeps us guessing until late in the book.

Most of the story is told through the eyes of the Langley's neighbours Jim Cutter and his teenage son Derek. Jim used to be the Mayor's personal driver but finally had enough of the way the Mayor treated people and now has his own lawn mowing business. Derek is a typical teenager interested in computers and girls and was best friends with the Langley's son Adam who was killed along with his parents in the house next door. What emerges is a twisted tale of secrets, lies, jealousy and revenge with a few more bodies along the way all coming together to make for an excellent thriller.

Yo he leído el ebook.

This felt like reading a made for tv film. It was just a bit too over the top to be believable. Every character had a secret and most of them had multiple secrets that they all kept from their supposed loved ones! Not one character was open or honest. You also had the seemingly irrelevant actions with objects which would come in very handy later on, again like a tv film that points everything out to the viewer so they don't have to tax their brains at all. I was really disappointed as my colleagues had raved about how much they loved Linwood Barclay. I didn't connect with the characters at all, or feel any of the tension for their situation. If I'm honest I just wanted to get to the end to see if I had guessed everything right! It wasn't that hard! There were also times when it felt so over described that it was as if Barclay had a word count target that he tied himself to! The book could have easily been edited down without losing any of the relevant plot details. I gave it two stars as while I didn't think it was great, I didn't hate it. For an easy crime read, with red herrings and skeletons in the closet it's okay and does what it says on the tin. I just feel there are better books out there.

The story begins with seventeen year old Derek hiding in his best friend, Adam Langley's, crawl space as the Langley's leave for a week long vacation. Derek's plan is to use the house as a private place to hang out with his girlfriend, Jenny, while the Langley's are gone. Derek is still in the house when the Langley's return unexpectedly only minutes after leaving. Derik can hear the refrigerator open and close, are they unpacking the car? He hears Mrs. Langley's footsteps on the stairs towards the second story bedrooms saying something about becoming sick and ruining the vacation. Soon after that Derek hears a knock on the front door above his head, Mr. Langley's voice then - gunfire explodes. Terrified, Derek sits frozen, heart hammering, unable to breathe, behind the downstairs sofa then, more gun shots, he hears a scream from Adam's mom as she falls down the stairs. His best friend, Adam, gets shot right in front of his eyes as Derek frantically scrambles out the back door, out into the darkness.

Right from the beginning this book grabbed me by the throat sending me on a speeding ride through an endless web of twists, like a dozen corkscrews all piled together in a box, before spitting me out in a dizzy lump at the end!

Lindwood Barclay is very crafty and kept me guessing continuously throughout the book. Even with the dizzying array of leads flying around, all my attempts to solve the case fizzled out and become useless in the end.
Amazingly enough, the multiple story lines, numerous characters, along with the dizzying array of leads that are all rolled together the book is not confusing or difficult to follow.
I found Too Close to Home very entertaining and I will be looking for more of Lindwood Barclay novels!

3.5 stars - This story was entertaining and kept my attention for the most part. Super easy to read and a pretty good whodunit. Like many other readers, I solved the mystery long before the end, but still enjoyable regardless. This was my first Linwood Barclay novel and I'll definitely read some of his others.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I did not enjoy this book. It starts off strong, but peters out fast. Most of the storyline hinges on people inexplicably withholding important information, or on the police being so inept that they choose to focus on exactly the wrong thing while ignoring the giant FACT that's right in front of their faces. It's like a soap opera, where the villains are practically twirling their mustaches, but miraculously avoiding any scrutiny whatsoever, and normal guys are tossed into jail on a hunch, and the people who might help them keep making the worst decisions ever, for no logical reason. There's just so much here that made no sense to me at all. I kept going because I was curious how the plagiarism storyline would play out, but man, it was painful. In my opinion, an incredibly frustrating read that left me more angry than satisfied.

Who murdered the Langleys and why? Is there a connection between the suicide of a young promising author, an uni prof and some copyright infringement? What about Donna Langley and her relationship to Jim Cutter and his son Derek? Ellen's role is also interesting, not to forget Drew and some serious mischief the mayor of Promise Falls was responsible for. This was an absolutely outstanding thriller with many twists, well crafted plausible characters, a great denouement and compelling jaw dropping moments from start to finish. Great book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended!

Really poor. Predictable yet inconsistent ending, cliched cardboard characters, workmanlike prose. Starts off at a canter, and develops a nice tension that sadly collapses into a completely-foreseeable, ham-fisted ending. In the end, it was something of a chore to get through.

It's long. And at the very end I was pulled to give it a 3 star, but it was so entertaining that I just couldn't. 3.5 star rounded up.

First, these characters were not the usual suburban or rural small town dysfunction that's so currently endemic. Oh they are "off", but they have more depth. And Derek, the 17 year old, he was especially closer to the real teens I know. And even some of them I love.

Only the Mom, Ellen, gave me some pause. But then again- she's not the only woman with a history of omission to the issues of her workplace or other everyday "troubles" outside of the house and her roles there. And most of all that might seem so separated (or seemingly so) from usual family discourse. In some families. Then there are those units in which the members never keep their mouths shut about anything that has "gone on" that day. But that's not about this book. That's for sure.

It's full of twists and turns and nasty to nice personalities. Cutter's short wick temper comes across soon and often. And the few elephants or giraffes in the room blare out at the reader and don't seem to be fodder for pertinent conversations amongst the principles in the Cutter family. BUT- it's their habit.

Others have posted they did not guess right upon the perp. I knew at page 300 but it still left a couple of issues questionable. How those questions became answered left me wanting to give it a 3. But no, I just couldn't. Because this is one of the few of this genre that I couldn't seem to put down. It had a fast flow for the length and much to keep you guessing.

Violence in this? Yes, but this is not chewy, gory- not even in the first terrible crime at the Langley's. Which doesn't make those murders cheery reading- but there is not the tons of gratuitous violence or foul language so often found (moderns) in this book. I'd definitely read another of his. Not erudite, not savvy/clever, but extremely entertaining to the "why".

For full review - The Limit of Books Does Not Exist

Linwood Barclay’s novels reminds me a lot of Harlan Coben’s novels. They typically follow a male protagonist, who is married with a beautiful wife and they have 1-3 kids. The lead has some minor faults, but overall they are your typical average nice guy. A murder happens and they end up getting involved and eventually take down the killer.

The biggest problem for me was that I felt like I had already read this novel because it follows a typical pattern. I was disappointed that nothing really shocked me, including who the killer was.

I also didn’t enjoy the characters. You had Jim, who was your average lead. I felt that he was suppose to be this super great guy, but I couldn’t connect with him. I hated Jim’s wife Ellen, she just seemed super shady and you could tell that she was hiding something. Derek, their son, was ok. I liked how the first chapter was from his point of view so you got to know more about him and his actions. I also didn’t like how the Cutter’s could of solved a lot of their problems by just talking to each other. Instead, stuff happens and then they would reveal their secrets.

This is the second Linwood Barklay novel I've read. I very much enjoyed No Time for Goodbye.

As a whole, I enjoyed this one almost as much, but I found it a bit convoluted towards the end.
You know what made these two books so much fun? Barklay thrusts you into a situation right from the get-go and there are so many unknowns that you have no idea what lies beyond the next turn. When you're in the midst of this phase of the novel, you're totally in its grip. Five star quality all the way.

However, I found Too Close to Home just got a wee bit long in the tooth in the last quarter or so. At that point, a lot of the mystery was revealed, and with little of the fun unknown left, I was impatient for it all to end already.

Regardless, this was still a good read, and I will definitely read more of him...

This is one of the best murder mysteries I've read this year. Someone killed the Langley's and no one heard a thing, except for Derek Cutter, who was hiding in a crawlspace in the Langley's home. This murder has plagiarism written all over it, and no one is innocent when detective Barry Duckworth investigates. The Mayor is an ass, and his chauffeur is a bully. The Cutter's are cursed and poor Barry is all over the place trying to solve a triple homicide. Connecting the dots was difficult to say the least, which is why this novel was so brilliant. I like the writing style of this author and not sure why I didn't find him sooner. Better late than never. A suspenseful, page turning read. Loved it.

After recently finishing No Time for Goodbye and enjoying it so, I just couldn't wait to pick up my next Linwood Barclay book!! Too Close To Home is another winner!!

In the quiet neighborhood of Promise Falls (purely fictitious, I actually had to look it up to see if it was real but it was created by Barclay, where many of his stories take place, a small quiet neighborhood in New York) where murders rarely occur, the Langley family is brutally shot to death in their own home. The next door neighbors, Jim and Ellen Cutter, with their teenage son Derek, knew the Langley's fairly well, or so they thought they had.

Jim Cutter doesn't believe this to be a random killing, with Albert Langley being a successful criminal lawyer, and soon discovering that the killings are connected to the secrets of the town of Promise Falls itself, with its corrupt Mayor announcing his run for Congress, and the suicide of a student a decade earlier. Jim and Ellen soon come to terms with the situation and realize things are not what they seem, and must walk down memory lane facing their own demons.

Scary to think about, it could happen to anyone (sorry not trying to scare anybody here). You just feel for the characters but with Barclay's writing style, you feel like you're there in the story yourself.

This is a very well written book. It's plotted in a way as to hold the attention and I can see where this story could have bogged down and become a bit wandering. Mr. Barclay takes what could have been almost cliched and constructs a well thought out, well "characterized" (and in this case I use that word to mean that the characters are full enough to get to know and know about without leaving us "over-informed") and again well plotted.

I had a few small moments when I thought that the characters acted in a way that didn't really ring true, but then he goes out of his way to set the people up to explain those actions. Maybe it's a case where in "actual life" the people in question would have acted/reacted in the way shown here and I'd still be scratching my head going..."what was he/she thinking?"

Okay I figure by now you get that I liked the book and can recommend it. This is the story of a suburban family and what happens when they wake up to find the entire family next door murdered execution style...especially when they begin to realize that by the way the mailbox sets on the road, it could look like they lived in that house.

I don't want to give any spoilers but as you follow the dad (Bill Cutter) on his quest to put all the incidents together. There's a somewhat karmic type view of some things here as the facts add up. There are coincidence/coincidences worthy of Dickens that pile upon secrets which have lain dormant for years...and now finally come back to bight in the rear.

As said, pretty good book. Recommended.

I really enjoyed this book.
The story is fast paced and it is not long before you are turning pages quickly to find out what is happening next. I have now read several Linwood Barclay books and he never fails to deliver.

Too Close to Home is a great thriller that was highly enjoyable throughout. The book was full of twists and turns and read the book in a couple of sittings as I didn't want to put it down.
