Depressing and horrifying all wrapped into one.
A lot of us think of faeries as pretty sweet creatures, but when you read enough paranormal magic fiction (or is it actually non-fiction) you come to realize faeries are actually pretty terrifying. Yes, they can be beautiful, but a lot of times that is false - they’re mean and wicked! And in this read I found out about way more scary fairies than I ever even knew about. And seriously, who’s to say they aren’t real? There’s so much out there in this world that we as humans will never even touch upon knowing.

(Tiny spoiler coming. Skip this paragraph if you don’t want to know a small detail - it’s the last 2 sentences) -

Jayce and Brayden were “on the rocks” through most of this. It wasn’t his fault though! I mean, the two have been in love so deeply (for several years) that her sister could physically SEE the love between the two. It was love from afar because Brayden was married and therefore untouchable. And then they became gf bf and had been that way for a year until some mysterious guests entered Doyle. Then he breaks up with her. VIA TEXT! What?!

Jayce is left confused, but then she puts on her big girl panties and stops sniveling. It is only then that she meets with the other two in her triplets set - Karin and Lenore - to get to the bottom of things and also figure out what the heck the bear or mountain lion or the “It” is that is feasting on locals. What is finally seen is the scariest part. Aaaacckk!!

And what’s up with the birds and Raven and O’Hare? I still don’t know, but I imagine they will be explained in either the next or 6th book. Are they actually animals (a raven and rabbit) in human form? And what’s to happen with Jayce and Brayden? He asked for Jayce to give him some time away to think.

I did 5 star review this, because it turns out good and there’s plenty of mystery…however…I swear I felt pretty lost throughout. I felt like there was a 500 page book prior to the final of 194 pages, because there were so many things missing to get from point A to point B. I felt like I was going from point Z to point M and then N and it was all so scatterflurffed!

Well, I’m onto book 5 now - “Fey”.
And remember - magic is a lot about confidence and intent!

I really like the Bonheim sisters of Doyle. This one focuses more on Jayce. These are the types of books you want to get comfy and plan to read straight through. Plan on ordering pizza for dinner because you won’t want to put it down.

I think Kirsten's books are sooo good! This was another fabulous read on the sisters. I was so excited to read more about these sisters! And Kirsten didn't disappoint. There is more out there then the fairies and they aren't the only ones with magic in them.

3+. Decent enough story, but Jayce could definitely do better with her choice in men.

I received this ARC from Red Coat Publishing and the author in exchange for an honest review.
A few months ago I read another of the author’s books called Deja Moo part of the A Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum series and it turned out it wasn’t really my cup of tea. Naturally, I was a bit hesitant reading another of the author’s stories. Sadly, my intuition wasn’t wrong. Before I continue, I have to say that this is the first book in The Witches of Doyle series I have read.
The characters seemed overdrawn and even exaggerated. Each character had one personality trait and that was their hook, their only quality and that made for very one-dimensional characters and a very one-dimensional read.
The plot, a murder mystery in a small town that has magical influences, that draws from the previous books in this series could have been interesting, if only the characters were better developed.
I couldn’t enjoy the writing much at all. I felt it was too wordy in describing seemingly irrelevant details that ultimately turned against the author when she contradicts herself within the span of two pages; on the one page the narrator talks about a grey couch and on the next page it turned into a black sofa. That would definitely confuse the reader. With regards to the main character, who also acted as the narrator, I could not accept her being in her early thirties based on how she narrated. For instance, having a character or narrator say sentences such as “…like – hello, Business Owner!” or actually narrate the word “ugh”, which had its own line, felt juvenile and didn’t mesh with the overall idea the author attempted to bring across.
Overall, I am aware that most readers liked this story, but for me there were too many elements that just rubbed me the wrong way.
