Some soldiers don’t let anything sway them from their mission—not even death from high explosives.

Free from her troubled past, Agent Kirsten Wren finds peace in mentoring Evan, a little boy with psionic talents similar to hers, and soon develops strong protective feelings for him.

A team of corporate “issue resolution consultants” tears up the city, continuing their mission to kill a man in the afterlife. Kirsten pursues the unusually potent spirits, trying to stop their rampage before more people die. Her investigation leads her to a strange ritual circle that gives off energy darker than any wraith she has yet encountered.

Unable to make sense of the ancient pictographs, she seeks help from the only person in the area capable of understanding them, an enigmatic billionaire who takes a strange fancy to her. His opinion that she’s chasing demons calls into question everything she believes.

Kirsten’s not about to let superstition scare her away from protecting an innocent ghost. Alas, the demons give her an impossible choice: back off and let a man die—or they take the boy she considers a son.

Psychic cop with paranormal abilities with ghost partner

Division Zero :Lex Dr Mortuis is book 2 in the series and I would suggest to read book one first. This book continues the story of the GOP with psychic abilities to stop ghosts from harming people but now some ghosts that went with the shadowy Harbingers below are coming back but are very different...stronger...some call them demons. Kristen is trying to find the one responsible for opening a hate for them meanwhile trying to bring in her dead partner's murderer in who is a top crime boss.
She is also trying to claim custody of a boy that has the rare abilities like hers and a horrible background like hers too! Pretty exciting! Stayed up all night to finish!

While I will admit I read the first book in this series within a day, I think I read this one in only a couple hours because I just couldn't put the book down.

We're still following Kirsten Wren, who has know gained (temporary?) custody of a young boy from an abusive household who seems to display the same kind of abilities she has. This was probably one of my favorite things about this part because we get to understand a bit more about Kirsten's abilities and how they would've made her different while growing up as well and why she's still a bit of an "outcast" among civilians and feared even among her fellow officers.
While helping Evan understand and come into his abilities, Kirsten is also tasked with helping her partner Dorian to understand his past. As well as bring Rene (no spoilers on who she is) to justice.

I would like to thank author Curiosity Quills Press for granting me a copy of this e-book to read in exchange for an honest review. Though I received this e-book for free that in no way impacts my review.

Goodreads Teaser:
Some soldiers don’t let anything sway them from their mission, not even death from high explosives.

Free from her troubled past, Agent Kirsten Wren finds happiness mentoring Evan, a boy with similar talents with whom she soon forms a strong bond. Her efforts to help Dorian settle his past become complicated when a team of corporate “issue resolution consultants” continue their mission to kill a man in the afterlife.

Kirsten gets involved when their post-mortem grudge match spills into the realm of the living. At the scene of a surgical explosion that gutted only one floor of a residential tower, she discovers a strange arcane circle drawn in silver. There, she senses energy darker than any wraith she has yet encountered; a force that questions everything she believes about the world.

Vikram Medhi, the hacker targeted by Lyris Corporation for elimination, begs her to protect him from undead out to destroy him. With no way to track these spirits, she seeks help from an enigmatic billionaire who offers her more than a simple translation of ancient Sumerian pictographs.

Chasing down a dangerous psionic criminal in the oldest lawless zone in the city, trying to protect a man on a corporate death list, and trying to keep both of them from hurting the one person in the world she loves, Kirsten must reach deep within herself to accept her destiny.

Another intriguing and exciting book in the Division Zero saga, this one expands Agent Kirsten Wren's character, giving her greater depth and vulnerability in different areas. Her love for Evan, the young boy she found and rescued, who happens to have the same psionic abilities she has, has taken her in a new direction. She draws strength from their relationship, especially as it grows stronger. Yet she's still a bit hesitant to let go and allow herself to believe it will all work out, as there is still a risk that she won't be granted guardianship for Evan. Just the thought of having him taken away from her is ripping her apart inside, but she can't allow him to see her fears. She learns to draw on her love for him to be stronger in the field than ever before before, all for his sake. Having someone dependent upon her is making her take less risks in the field, for she is terrified of dying if that means leaving him to grow up without her love and guidance.

Meanwhile, she continues to wrestle with her inappropriate feelings for her partner Dorian. Even if he did return her feelings it's not like they could ever have a truly satisfying relationship due to his unusual situation, not to mention the fact that he's still hung up on his former partner Nila, though she has no idea about his feelings for her. It would be the perfect love triangle if it weren't so strange. For Dorian's sake Kirsten tries to help Nila, only she ends up bringing danger straight to her door instead. Literally. Though she does learn some important things, things that could lead to a strong friendship between the two, if it doesn't make them into enemies that is.

Those are just background noise compared to the ghost that has come to Kirsten begging for her help. It seems that the people sent after him died when he did, but they somehow escaped from the Abyss (a.k.a. hell) to come back for him and kill him again, only this time in the afterlife. Apparently they had some help making their escape, and have come back as something more than your garden variety ghosts. Which means Kirsten is up against something new, with unknown levels of power. At their first meeting she discovers they are far stronger than anything she's ever encountered before, though that doesn't stop her from doing everything within her power to protect the innocent.

During all of the hectic events she handles, she is also finally making time to try dating seeing how Dorian simply isn't an option. Being psionic doesn't help her dating game, as every man she's tried dating has fled the moment they learn about she abilities. So when she meets not one, but two very different men who seem just fine with her the way she is, abilities and all, she is a very happy woman. Too bad her friends aren't all that fond of one of the men, making her question what's wrong with him. She also wonders if they might be right, as she isn't quite sure how she feels about him either, despite her overwhelming physical reaction to him.

Unlike the others on the force Kirsten is still completely reluctant to kill unless it is an absolute last resort. She always hopes that she can redeem the offenders, which keeps putting her in harm's way. Now that she has Evan to look after she is struggling to find a healthier balance between her safety and her conscience. This balancing act is a work in progress, with an interesting learning curve. And speaking of learning, something she's always wondered about gets answered in this book.

As always, not everything is as it appears on the surface. Once again Kirsten must find the truth that's buried in the midst of a heaps of half-truths and outright lies. But will she discover the truth in time to save herself while still protecting Evan and the other innocents she's collected in this story? The level of sustained suspense works well in this book, giving the reader rest breaks before ramping the suspense up even higher. This cycle is repeated several times throughout the book, each time the level of suspense increases, finally reaching nail-biting status by the end.

Facing Demons Within And Without

••• Not for the transphobic, homophobic, or closedminded •••

Before starting this series you should read Virtual Immortality because some of the characters are closely linked to this series. This series must be read in order. The first book is Into The Beneath. The second book is Division Zero. The third book is Loose Ends. This is the fifth book. I can't wait to read Division Zero : Thrall!

Kirsten has found a way to bring most of her demons under control. Evan has helped her immeasurably. Their bond grows daily as do her fears of losing him. His presence has given her life meaning, beyond just her job and saving innocents. For the first time she can remember, she has a real family worth protecting. Hopefully all goes well and she will *finally* be able to adopt him and make their family permanent. Having Dorian for a partner has certain advantages... As well as drawbacks. Too bad there is noone else truly like her to partner with! With returned dark souls to deal with from the Abyss, her job is becoming weirder and weirder. How did they escape the Abyss? What are they here for? Are they the things that gave rise to the stories of Demons? Or is there something worse out there she has yet to come across? Can she send them back or destroy them before they accomplish their mission? What will happen if she fails? Can she keep Evan safe?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy dystopian futuristic sci-fi with plenty of intrigue set in a post postapocalyptal world where nothing is as it seems and the paranormal vies with advanced science for control of the world :)

I don't usually read to review books if they are part of a series and I haven't read the previous books first, but for some reason when I was given the opportunity to read DIVISION ZERO: Lex De Mortuis as part of a blog tour, I hopped on board!

Kirsten Wren is an agent with Division 0, a law enforcement branch of paranormal investigators, hundreds of years in the future. Her world is one of decay, high-rises, hovercars, ghostly partners, and constant bias against her psionic gifts. Now attempting to raise a child and teach him how to use his gifts, she also finds herself caught up in a frightening mystery. Can she survive them both?

DIVISION ZERO is an immersive sci-fi set against an urban backdrop, painted with the paranormal and splashed with romance. I can't wait to read more!!

Having just read the first book in the series and the prequel and interlude short stories, I am really getting into this series. Although I see by one of the reviews, I need to read his Virtual Immortality in order to have the fullness of the continuity. I highly recommend this book to any who love a science-fiction/fantasy page-turner with a solid female protagonist.

Amazing how attached to these characters I become.

Such a complex world. Layers of society existing in same space. Yet so few truly aware of each other. Division Zero being formed by chance of talent at birth. Gives a much wider perspective to the agents involved.

I do love to read out of this world sci-fi stories with a twist and a strong female character. Kristen isn't over the top strong and she has her flaws. She's had a tough childhood and her story continues. She's got a sort of love interest but she's untrusting and its difficult for her. She's taken in a little boy Evan who needs her as much as she needs him. Just loved those 2 together. I enjoyed book 1 and equally enjoyed this one. Thats pretty rare in some series I've read. I cant wait to read more.

There was so much going on that I don't know where to start. Overall, it was awesome. There was scifi, romance, a bit of fantasy, suspense, and fantastic characters. Matthew Cox really sucked me into this story. I couldn't out it down. I felt like I was there in the story during this futuristic post apocalyptic world. And I really want to have psionic abilities!!!!

I received a free copy of this book from the author, Matthew Cox, for an honest review.

I loved this book! The first book in the series was fantastic and the 2nd didn't disappoint.

Kirsten has such an interesting personality. She has all the insecurities a typical woman has, all the faults/shortcomings all people suffer from and yet has a quiet strength that is truly amazing. She had a terrible childhood and is working to overcome that and be a good person.

She has fallen in love with a little boy that has unique abilities like herself. Together they make a cute little pair.

I love the fact that this story picks up not far after the first ended. I am impressed at how well Cox is able to write from the female perspective. The main character is so realistic, in my opinion, in a world that is very foreign to our own.

I highly recommend reading this series.

Building on the interwoven threads of high-tech dystopia and emergent mental powers from Division Zero, Cox shows the reader one possible answer to the question of religion in a science-fiction world without sacrificing the visceral action of a cyberpunk thriller.

This novel is the second volume in the Division Zero series. Therefore, spoilers loom ahead.

With the trauma of her childhood exorcised and her adoption of Evan – a boy with similar psionic power to her own – proceeding well, Agent Kirsten Wren intends to focus her efforts on settling her dead partner’s affairs. However, when the ghosts of a corporate hit squad develop the ability to harm the living, her personal and professional lives collide again. A situation only made worse when she crosses paths with a criminal who can take over people’s minds.

As with both the previous volume and many of Cox’s other works, this book is fast-paced without being rushed and complex without being convoluted.

However – unlike the cyberpunk with psionics flavour of his other stories in this world – this veers toward fantasy in a technological setting. While the mystical powers displayed are, at their strongest, no greater than those of the protagonists in his Awakened series and are often weaker, the continued question of what happens after death and how Kirsten’s powers fit into that takes the story firmly into the realm of metaphysics and spirituality.

This novel at its heart still embraces the gritty person-focus of the cyberpunk thriller. Kirsten pursues foes with entirely human motivations through the stylish glass mountains of the rich and the derelict sumps of the poor, driven by immediate risks and a desire to protect her closest friends, and aided by allies of circumstance. Therefore, the plot is likely to engage all but the purist of science-fiction readers.

Kirsten continues to be a sympathetic protagonist. Having worked through the issue of her childhood, she lacks many of the unconscious limits, mental and otherwise, displayed in the first volume; however, this theoretical increase in ability brings with it a variety of new challenges, preventing her from losing her sense of vulnerability. Similarly, her happiness at finding Evan is paralleled by lack of experience as a parent.

Evan similarly mixes a greater potential for happiness now he has been rescued with underlying doubts, providing a different perspective on both recovering from past traumas and the issues of power without full understanding.

The supporting cast, whether continuing or new, feel fully rounded and distinct individuals that fit naturally within the world. This is especially noticeable with the ghostly corporate strike team, the members of which each display oddities consistent with having died and then evaded the afterlife but each remain clearly driven by a unique set of human fears and desires.

Overall, I enjoyed this book greatly. I recommend it to readers who enjoy science-fiction that values dramatic thrills over precise technological specifications.

I received a free copy from the author with a request for a fair review.

I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It took me a couple of days to read both books in this series because there was a lot of detail and information and I really had to pay attention rather than fly through it. Although I love watching sci-fi movies, I don't read a lot of it. I do enjoy it, but there usually isn't a lot that catches my attention. I decided to try this series since the second book was available on Netgalley.

Matt Cox is a very good writer and has created a very interesting and exciting future where cops are segregated into divisions based on their abilities. Kirsten is part of Division Zero, where psionics use their abilities to battle supernatural foes. I liked the first book and the introduction to Kirsten and to the secondary characters.

There's no romance (yet) in this series, although Kirsten is lonely and always looking for companionship. Constantly shunned by civilians as well as other cops who fear psionics, Kirsten is looking for love and happiness, but it's not really a focal point of the series. I love her partner, Dorian, and their relationship. I also like how Evan has come into her life.

Even though the plot was a little predictable to me, the writing was still good enough to make it enjoyable. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was the ending. Not the overall book ending, that was fine. The ending as in, literally the last page. One of the characters makes a statement, my Nook says I am on page 359 of 379, and I turn the page and....excerpt for another book called Caller 107. Huh, flip back, flip forward....scratches head. Is the book over? Did I get a bad ARC from Netgalley? It just seemed very abrupt. I'm still not sure.

Doesn't matter really. I will buy and read the next book when it comes out because the story is great. I also bought another book of Matthew Cox's and will give that a try as well.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although I felt like I was coming in sometime in the middle of the story (presumably because this was the second in the series) , I did really enjoy reading this. I felt that the world was an interesting one and although there were some things that were recognisable in the time period, it was still different enough to seem realistic for that far in the future.

I liked Kirsten as a character. I also liked her friendship with Dorian, though I had a bit of confusion about how he knew so much about the past. Some of those corrections were a little amusing, though.

I felt like I could really empathise with Kirsten. I could understand how difficult she found it to form relationships with people and I found myself getting really angry with her mother, even though she never actually appeared as a character in the book. I also really liked Kirsten’s relationship with Evan. I would have liked to see more of that during the beginning of the book, but the later scenes between them were really sweet.

I felt that the idea of Division Zero was a really intriguing one, but I did get a bit confused at times with how common the knowledge about that was. Some people seemed to think Kirsten was a fake… even those involved with the police.

The descriptions in this book came across really well and the writing itself drew me right in. The characters were engaging and well-written, but I wasn’t so keen on the hints of romance. The family elements were much more interesting.

At some point in the future, I would like to read the preceding book to this… and any sequel/s there might be. Although this is the second book in the series, I still found it really well-written and easy to follow.

*** This a copy of my Amazon Review. ***

I received an ecopy of this book from the author with zero strings attached. I have enjoyed reading his past works and this book is no different.

This is the second installment of Division Zero and as the first, this was well written with solid characters and ample descriptions of the surrounding and the actions.

This is a trippy book, part Sci-Fi, part dystopian, part ghost story, part romance in a twisted way, and a lot of part crime story, with added psionic and supernatural powers/happenings.

I am not quite sure how to express my wonder at this story yet explain how I got lost towards the end and had to re-read several chapters till I caught on to our leading lady's (Agent Kirsten Wren) actions, those around her, and what the actions cause and mean. I so look forward to reading the next book to get answers to my questions. I seriously thought about contacting the author but then I would have cheated myself of understanding the story in my own mind.

This a good story and recommend you read it. I have to give this 5 stars because of the solid writing and the involved story lines.

REVIEW: LEX DE MORTUIS (DIVISION ZERO) by Matthew Cox

I really enjoyed this fast-paced, entertainingly written novel. There's plenty of the dystopian and futuristic (400 years AFTER the U.S!); but most enjoyable for me were the paranormal and Supernatural aspects. I've been reading such for uncountable years, and the best Supernatural or paranormal stories are the BELIEVABLE (just for examples: Henry James' THE TURN OF THE SCREW; Stephen King' s FIRESTARTER; Garth Stein' s A SUDDEN LIGHT). Stories which make me believe in the setting, plot, and characters are the best; and from Page One, LEX DE MORTUIS convinced me--and I loved it and will reread it.
