Nora has faced the horrors of the Nightmare Realm and put a stop to the Weaver. But the girl that went in isn’t the same one who has come out. Now, as the Lady of Nightmares, Nora’s next passage to the Night World will be permanent. Months in the Day World have already taken their toll on her new identity. Her body aches from the strain of magic and her mind is tormented by a powerful darkness. The only thing holding her together is the thought of returning to the place that beckons her as much as it terrifies her.

The Sandman knows Nora needs to return to her realm, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. Especially when he sees firsthand what happened in the Nightmare Realm since she left. Not only have the nightmares become restless, but Rowan stole the Weaver’s Keep and is gathering an army strong enough to rip the magic from Nora so she can dominate the realm. If the Sandman can put off the inevitable for a few more days, he will.

When Nora finds her own way back to the Nightmare Realm, her relationship with the Sandman stretches thin, but there isn’t time to dwell on hurt feelings. Not when she’s delivered straight to Kail, the masked nightmare that got her into this mess. Unfortunately, her allies are too few and Kail’s desire for Rowan’s death seems to burn as brightly as her own. Nora must decide whom to trust if she wants to survive the Nightmare Realm. And, if she wants to reclaim what’s hers, she must embrace the darkness within.

There are spoilers ahead for Dream Keeper. Nora is counting down her last days in the human world. The Sandman is determined to help her get a handle on her new powers before she returns to the Night World, but she’s impatient to claim her world before Rowan gets a foothold there. Determined to find a way back on her own, even if it puts a rift in their relationship, Nora grudgingly turns to Kail, one of the nightmares who tricked her into killing the Weaver in the first place. Though she doesn’t trust him, he seems to want Rowan dead as much as she does. Unfortunately, she may have let something much worse back into the Night World when she crossed over. Trigger warnings: death, torture, body horror, violence, injury, blood, needles, threats. Some NSFW content.

It continues to blow my mind that this series isn’t getting more attention. It deserves to have legions of fans obsessed with Duell’s cool world-building and her dream-crossed lovers, so I’m going to spend the first part of this review explaining why every YA urban fantasy reader needs a copy of this right now! The first book is like Rise of Guardians meets A Nightmare on Elm Street in the best way, and the Night World is one of my favorite recent fantasy worlds. It’s equal parts beautiful and darkly imaginative, the ethereal Dream side ever in contrast to the wickedness of the Nightmare side. (If that’s not reason enough to read these, I don’t know what is.)

Dark Consort spends more time in the dream realm while Nora gets a handle on her new powers, and I never get tired of seeing the nightmare creatures just doing their nightmare things. It has everything from creepy skeleton monsters and a perpetually bleeding army to a Coraline-style seamstress casually sewing buttons over people’s eyes. (If it’s not clear, I love them with all my horror-movie heart.) Ben is basically a sexy, tattooed Sandman whose love for Nora never wavers, even when he has cause to doubt her. I’m usually not that into romances, but I love theirs, mainly because events keep forcing its development in interesting ways. OTP.

We also get a chance to see some new(ish) characters in this novel, and I really enjoyed the additions of Kail and Halven. Kail’s dynamic with Nora has the potential to be a great enemies-to-lovers (if I wasn’t so obsessed with her and Ben), but enemies-to-reluctant-allies-and-maybe-friends-if-we-don’t-kill-each-other-first is just as fun, if not more. His mysterious connection to Halven also kept me flipping pages. I think the one downside of this novel is that Rowan is pretty much a background villain, rarely on the page and hardly ever all that threatening–unlike the Weaver, who was top-notch terrifying and kind of a gorier, grown-up version of Pitch Black. The book also introduces Mare, a creepy new villain that I hope takes center stage in the next book. Dark fantasy lovers won’t want to miss this series. In the meantime, I’m going to keep screaming about it to anyone who will listen.

Words cannot express how excited I was to read the second installment of this series and I was not disappointed by any means. If I could give Amber Duell more than 5 stars, I would (where's the BONUS YOU'RE AMAZING star??)

After reading the first novel, I was blown away with the author's ability to suck you in and make you feel completely excited and terrified at the same time. I wanted to be with Nora, I want to BE Nora, and escape into this world she was swept away in ... plus the Sandman (*whistles*) who wouldn't want to snuggle up with him??? Reading the second book was just as mesmerizing and I never wanted it to end.

Amber has a unique talent, one that can be compared to many well known and successful authors out there, and it would be a waste for everyone to miss out on this fantastic series. I URGE everyone to pick up a copy and fall into the Dream Realm with Nora and the others and find yourself gasping for more because this book was like air, I needed it, and I need the next one ASAP!!!! (Sorry, too much?? :) THAT'S how much I loved it!)

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a fantastic sequel!! There was definitely no lack of action, struggle with the darkness and terrifying nightmare creatures! I absolutely love that Mare or Mara is in this story, as a mare is an Old English demon that would sit on people’s chests while they sleep and suffocate them. In this book she is painted as “An Ancient” and has a very dark aura. I loved learning more about the powers Nora holds and the other greater nightmare creatures, like Kial and his brother. We get to see the romance between Nora and Sandman bloom and grow, they have their ups and downs but alas love prevails above all. Or will it? I absolutely can’t wait to find out in the final installment!!

This review will contain some SPOILERS for Dream Keeper for those who have not yet read it.

The Lady of Nightmares would rule by fear, and no one feared a thing they knew.

Dark Consort was a fantastic sequel to Dream Keeper. I was happily surprised because I typically have a difficult time with the midpoint of trilogies. Completely unrelated, it was so nice to read this sequel just months after the first in this series. Having a lesser gap between installments has kept the plot in my mind fresh and familiar. I’ve been really looking forward to seeing what happens next in the dynamics between the Sandman and Nora since Nora became the Weaver.

Dark Consort served as a world-building machine. The land of Dreams and Nightmares, especially the latter, are so foreign and fascinating. Totally left up to the interpretation of the author, I believe Duell did an amazing job at painting a vivid picture of the complex and demanding landscape that the Weaver rules. It only further cements the difficult task that Nora has ahead of her at assuming her crown as the Lady of Nightmares.

In order for Nora to assume her new role, she also has the hefty task of gaining respect from her new subjects. The wide array of nightmares that presented themselves was so engrossing. I just wanted to know more about them each time one appeared--what their purpose was, and why. Some served simple purposes, while others were complex and helped to drive the plot forward as helpers, or antagonists.

There main focus throughout Dark Consort is following Nora and watching her character transform. While she transforms into the Weaver, she must learn to set aside her fears and expectations in order to gain respect from others, grow in the attributes that she must acquire to be a leader, and also retain parts of her that help to keep her her. Obviously, this transformation puts a strain on the relationship between her and the Sandman. The feud between dreams and nightmares, peace and upheaval, “good” vs “bad” all become a part of the relationship between the Sandman and the Weaver. Obviously, these positions do, and will complicate their relationship deeply.

Mare’s character--an age-old being that liked to wreak havoc on the Nightmare realm--was quite memorable. I’m very curious to see how she will come into play in the next installment, as not much happens with her directly.

My only issue with Dark Consort was actually the Sandman’s character! I really loved his character in Dream Keeper. But here, I felt like he was stuck in a way. To a point, it makes sense. He’s been around for a long time which probably hinders his consciousness of change within himself when change is happening around him. Some of the decisions he made were short-sighted. No matter what, I’m expecting that there will be growth within his character in the next book.

I’m really anticipating Night Warden coming in 2020, to see how this trilogy will end up! It’s been a wild ride thus far!

Vulgarity: Minimal.
Sexual content: The two main characters sleep together in one scene, but there is no explicit content.
Violence: Moderate, with some gore and minor torture scenes.

My Rating: ★★★★1/2

** I was provided a free copy by the publishing press in exchange for my honest and independent opinion **

When I was pretty close to the end, I was determined to rate Dark Consort with 5 stars because it was so indescribably good and I barely could put it down (but I had to :( ) and I was always very hungry to continue reading as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there was the... I’ll call it “end battle” which disappointed me. Therefore, I eventually decided to give it 4 stars which is a decent rating, I think.

To put this review in one sentence: If you didn’t read the prequel, go and read it immediately because you NEED to read this book!

I was 100% in love with this sequel. While the prequel seemed pretty average to me (I gave it 3 stars), this was on a whole different level. After finishing the prequel I haven’t been certain if I would pick up the sequel. But when I learnt my favorite characters of the prequel (who didn’t have much screen time back then, unfortunately) have major roles in the sequel, I was lured. Can’t help it. If you’ve read Dream Keeper, you might be privy to what gems Rowan and Kail are. In this book I got a damn lot of them, both. But especially of Kail who’s my favorite character in this series. I was so in love with every scene he appeared in. To my mind he’s a brilliant protagonist and I can sense the author likes him a lot too because there’s so much detail in his character design. I hungered to learn more about him and I’m truly satisfied by the fact that there indeed was more to learn about him. Plus, many of his conversations with the actual main protagonist of this series Nora were pure gold. Funny and witty. Seriously, it was so much fun to read it but I also loved and suffered when I had to wait for the information I didn’t get. And I’m honest here, there’s a bit more I would have wished to learn about the .... “relation” between Kail and Rowan. Maybe I’ll get those details in the sequel to Dark Consort.

Plus, there is one thing that NEEDS to be explained and clarified in the next (and last book of this series): Who split the nightmares? Why? How? What happened? Pls, I need to know!!

Back to the relationships. In the prequel I complained about how there was too less info about the friendship between the Sandman and the Weaver. Maybe if I had gotten that, I would have been more touched by the Weaver’s death. But here comes this book and gives me some kind of flashbacks and they really hurt and made me ache and some part of me actually wished to get the Weaver back, certainly also because there are some urgent tasks.
The relationship between the Sandman and Nora was so difficult. I didn’t always relate to their decisions and actions and sometimes I found their feelings a bit off and/or strange, maybe even forced. I hated to see them drifting apart and I was so worried how this’ll develop over the years, decades, centuries and eons. I mean, honestly, they have SOOOOO much time ahead. It’s hard to grasp it. Anyway, I cheered for Nora when she decided to remember who she is.

Let’s also talk about new characters: Firstly, I liked the nightmares in this book more than the nightmares in the prequel. To my mind, their design was more unique and special. Some images that were brought up even made me giggle. Though I shouldn’t laugh, it’s the Nightmare Realm after all.
// giggles
I liked Halven a lot (though I think his name is a bit spoiler-ish if you know the truth — maybe it’s just coincidence, though. Who knows... Ah, the author does!)
Then, there was Mare/Mara and honestly, she gives me goosebumps. Everywhere. I feel like she might become the End Game of this series. Plus, I like how the entire plot gets more substantial because of her. Especially the whole story of the Ever Cage. It’s a very interesting idea and I like how the Night World gets a story of itself, with development, changes, etc.

Finally, a short look at the plot. The overall plot wasn’t a big surprise but after finishing the prequel one could already surmise which course this book would go. Nonetheless, the details came unexpected. Especially when Kail came up. I also was positively surprised when Nora’s sister was involved in a way I didn’t think of.
The only bit of the plot which I didn’t like too much was how Nora’s training was set. I mean I can see why it was executed like this and every happening was interesting to read in its entirety. I just would have wished for the transitions to be smoother. Nonetheless, Kail’s presence made it worth every second.

Honestly, this book was so much better than the prequel because of its characters and the dynamics and relationships between the characters. I mean, yes, the plot was very intriguing and entertaining to read but I can only truly enjoy a book if I feel with the protagonists. Fear, suffer, love, smile. This is only possible if the characters are designed with effort and care, so I can relate and bond with them. Then, the plot can truly get to me. This is why I enjoyed reading Dark Consort so very much.

For the sequel I hope to get more danger, angst, thrill... I want to get all the high stakes. It seems they’ll be up against Mare and because of certain flashbacks it’s to be expected it’ll be risky and dangerous. So pls, use the chance to make it a bloody and thrilling finale. I’m very excited to read the last book of this series!!

The Nightmare Realm is full of the most imaginative creatures! This second book in the series is probably more intense than the first. Nora, Lady Nightmare, has got to get her tower back from one of the most dangerous of the Nightmare creatures. Can she master the magic and win the respect of the creatures of the Night World?

Some series suffer from second book syndrome (as they call it), but NOT THIS ONE!!!!! The world building is phenomenal!!! I was sucked in and felt as though I was seeing and experiencing everything Nora was!! And Sandman is the most wonderful character, he truly is a dream come true!! Then there are Kail and Halven!!! All the characters are written sooo well!!!!!

You. Are. Sooo. Going. To. Love. This. Book!!!!!!!! I thought the first one was AWESOME, but THIS ONE FREAKIN KNOCKS IT OUTTA THE PARK!!!!!

Opinions: I adored Dream Keeper, meaning there's no possible way I can put my feelings into words for this book. Expectedly, Dark Consort was just as unbelievable as Dream Keeper yet even better! All of the key elements were even more potent and resonating in this book, which undoubtedly does not suffer from sequel syndrome. Duell cranked up the intensity and horror from an already overwhelming level in this installment of the Dark Dreamer Series, giving us book nerds a true fright. Adding to this, Nora's lasting connection with the readers brings us to the edge of our seats every time the Sandman shows up or a nightmare triggers a PTSD scare in her heart. I'm shaken by how much this young girl has been through and shocked by her perseverance! Unsurprisingly, those heartfelt, thought-provoking themes I was talking about from Dream Keeper showed up again, giving me even more reason to believe them and take something away from my reading experience. The drastic increase in awesomeness from Dream Keeper gives me high hopes for Night Warden, the third and final installment of the trilogy! This series will not be forgotten!

My Favourite Thing: Once again, I'm simply in awe of the characters. Sequels are often hard to judge, but everything is straightforward with Duell's Dark Dreamer series: it's amazing. The character's consistency between books is amazing. Their perseverance is inspiring. The long-term character development is eye-opening. The author did not skip planning any little detail; everything is mapped out and complex and perfect. Duell's displayed passion is pertinent in my appreciation for the book!

My Least Favourite Thing: And, once again, I have no dislikings about Dark Consort. I would reread it in a heartbeat if I wasn't speeding through this review to read Night Warden, the final installment of the Dark Dreamer series! This was a thoughtful book that made my day better. What's not to like about that?

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.

The second book in the Dark Dreamer Trilogy, Dark Consort takes place a few months after the end of book 1, and follows Nora and the Sandman’s adventures after the demise of the Weaver. Nora, as Lady Nightmare, has to get her tower back from one of the most dangerous Nightmare creatures, while attempting to build an army of supporters and followers and trying to survive in the Night World.

Nora has changed a lot from the previous book, become more of a darker character who has come to terms with what she must do. She is a stronger and more capable heroine, but has taken a dark turn in a beautifully dark story. The Sandman himself has had to develop and embrace his emotions and feelings in order to survive, and this book especially shows how great a problem solver he is. And Kail was perfect for some smiles and a couple of laughs in the midst of the dark plot.

Yes, it is a dark story, but not as ‘graphic’ as the previous, since the violence in this one is tamer. There are a few romantic scenes which lead to closed door intimacy, but nothing is described nor is there any explicit adult content, apart from some mild curses.

A fast paced dark fantasy filled with action, adventure, and a bit of romance, which will keep you hooked on the story and not want to stop reading. I loved this book and love the story so far, looking forward to how things develop in the third book.

I received this as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Amber R. Duell and The Parliament House for giving me access.

The moment I put Dream Keeper down, I immediately needed more! Luckily I only had to wait a few months and was able to receive an eARC for Dark Consort. I couldn’t put this book down. It once again captivated me from page one, all the way to the final page.

This is not the same feel as the first book, which had a Nightmare on Elm Street vibe to it. This is now a war between who gets to rule the nightmares.

If you are still wanting a dark read, never fear. Dark Consorts still has all the darkness you crave and maybe a little more.

There is not much I can say with out revealing spoilers! All I can really say is YOU NEED TO READ THIS SERIES! I promise it is great!

Oh and also #teamkail.

Most series/trilogies start off strong and head south after book one. This one, though, seems like it's going to be one that just keeps getting better and better with each book!

We spend so much more time in the Nightmare Realm and get to expand a bit more on our main characters (which was a slight issue I had with book 1 not really giving the characters depth). While the relationship between Nora and Sandman plays a big role, it wasn't super mushy or over the top. Loved, loved, loved all the nightmare-y stuff! This one definitely hits more in the dark fantasy genre and we get to experience more of the "dark" stuff.

The ending!!! Ummm!!! I'm definitely looking forward to book 3 after that!!

This one picks up a few months down the road from book one and wow did it pack a punch. I fell in love with Nora, the Sandman, and a few other characters that were NIGHTMARES!! That is just how good Amber writes her characters. This one had some major themes of darkness taking over Nora and her fighting to stay herself as well as the Sandman trying to keep her safe. It had some side characters that shined very well and I fell in love with the brothers. Man this couldn't have been any better.

Dark Consort is every bit as good as book one with action that grabs you from the start. Duell's writing is beautiful, almost lyrical. As I was reading I was tempted to read some sentences twice but the plot was equally arresting and kept me turning pages fast. I can't wait to read book three.

First, thank you to Amber and Parliment press for this ARC for an honest review.

I’ll just say it straight up.. I LOVE THIS SERIES!! When I first read Dream Keeper, I didn’t know what I was getting into.. and I was not disappointed at all. And now to finally have Dark Consort in my kindle I couldn’t be happier!

It was so great to be back in the dream world with Nora and the Sandman. Watching Nora grow as a character and into her role was an action packed adventure.

I’m not a spoilers person, so all I’m going to say is read this series. You will fall in luv with the world and characters, and like me, will be dying for book 3 🤣

Absolutely loved the sequel to Dream Keeper! It had me turning pages faster than the first.

There is no wasting time as we pick up where we left off, and Nora is trying to come into her own. I loved seeing the struggle between the power and ruling over her minions, but she's not a force to be reckoned with.

The characters developed wonderfully, and some of my personal favorites receive more air time AHEM KAIL..AHEM...

Thoroughly enjoyed this! Definitely recommend if you loved the first... this will blow the first out of the water.
