The first in a new series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh--you've met the Mackays; now it's time to meet their friends.
Lora Leigh returns to breathtaking Kentucky, the setting of the New York Times bestselling Nauti series, for this new series that continues the legacy of the Mackay family as Tracker Calloway finds a new reason to stay in the area now that his foster sister, Angel, has finally reunited with her long-lost family. He's more than intrigued by Mina, the mysterious beauty who lives next door, but Mina has secrets she's hiding, secrets that will threaten all she loves, especially Tracker.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Lora Leigh is a New York Times bestselling author of erotic romance novels. Leigh started publishing with electronic publisher Ellora's Cave in 2003. Leigh's longest-running series is The Breeds. She won the 2009 RT Award for erotica. Leigh was born in Ohio and raised in Martin County, Kentucky, US.
I've read 41 Lora Leigh books over the years...probably more than that and I just don't remember and/or haven't inventoried them all properly. I started reading her when I was FAR too young to be reading smutty romance. Which was a lot harder to accomplish pre-kindle with some of those 1990's covers, let me tell you.
But I digress.
My point is that I am very familiar with Lora Leigh's brand and style of writing and this one was very much par for the course. Meaning we had a ridiculous scenario, a super possessive alpha male, some insta-love, and a slew of characters with very mysterious military backgrounds. And, despite all these militaristic/super secret spy skills, they all still manage to oscillate between complete ineptitude and over the top badassery. And, of course, the "heroine" acts like an idiot toward the end; but how else would we achieve the requisite "I must save you" ending scene, right?
Now, this may sound like all negatives and that I'm complaining, but that is not the case. I requested this book knowing Lora Leigh, and like I said, this book met my expectations...it just didn't surpass them is all.
In short, this was a decently entertaining read, but definitely doesn't reach Coyote's Mate level of perfection, in my opinion.

3.5 stars. Hot as hell. Love the plot and while the blurb says first in a series, you really need to read other books before this one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It has been a while since I read a book by Leigh and I really missed her beautiful stories. She has a gift that draws you in and wraps you in sensual heat while ramping up a bit of suspense to keep you on your toes too. This story is a wonderful example of that.
I fell hard for the characters. Leigh was so descriptive especially when it came to Isabeau and her sights, sounds, and feelings. I loved Tracker, but I have to admit, his name bugs me. It is hard to imagine screaming that in the throes of passion! LOL
As much as I loved parts of this book, there were issues that had me lost many times. The blurb says that this is the first book in a new series, yet there were so many characters that were apparently known prior, I felt like I was coming into a series behind and missing key links to others. Leigh needs to give the reader more backstory to tie the characters to the series.
I love the plot, but you really need to read other books before this one. I can’t tell you which one (but the ones with the Mackays would help) but the backstory is not clearly laid out in this one to keep track of anything.
In Isabeau’s Eyes is hot as hell! I definitely loved so many parts. A clear connection to others would have made this a 5 star for me!

No rating as I DNF.
Could not for the life of me get into this book. The story line was very light (not much depth) muddled and difficult to follow. All the characters and differing relationships made this somewhat convoluted and confusing. Previous books about these couple if I remember correctly, so would probably beneficial to read those before???
And forgot (it's been a while since reading her books) that Lora Leigh's books are very sex focused.
And sadly the MC depth just was lacking.
After about the half way point I just quickly skimmed to the end, hence no rating and DNF.
In Isabeau's Eyes by Lora Leigh is the first book in her new series, Kentucky Nights. This spicy, emotional story took me on a roller coaster of emotions.
Story Recap: Isabeau Boudreaux lost her parents in a violent attack ten years ago that also left her blind. Now, after a series of accidents her friends, the Mackays of Somerset, Kentucky, believe Isabeau is in danger. Her best friend, Angel, and Angel’s brother, Tracker Calloway, know she’s in danger and they work to keep her safe.
Mercenary Tracker Calloway is reluctant to get involved until he realizes his sister is also in danger. He’s immediately attracted to the very beautiful Isabeau, but he’s done with relationships and doesn’t want to lead Isabeau on. But, as Tracker helps Isabeau escape danger, they begin to fall in love.
My Thoughts: I enjoyed this steamy, sexy, emotional story. It was a bit steamier than I’m used to, but the story was good, and I grew to love both Isabeau and Tracker. I appreciated the way the author handled Isabeau’s blindness, and I thought she handled it with empathy. It’s always nice to see issues like this highlighted in books.
I thought there were a lot of characters in this story that made it a bit confusing at the start. But eventually, I figured everyone out and was able to enjoy the story. Although this is the first book in the series, it’s a continuation of another popular series the author wrote, so if you’ve been reading the author's other series, you’ll fit right into this one more easily than I did.
Recommendation: I recommend In Isabeau’s Eyes to anyone who enjoys romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Isabeau Boudreaux lost her sight at fifteen when her parents were killed in an apparent murder suicide and she was shot in the process. However, her eyesight and memories have slowly been coming back, and she’s beginning to think the story she was told may not be the truth. Especially since there’s been several “accidents” where she narrowly escaped with her life over the years.
In the latest attempt on her life, her friend Angel is almost killed as well, and Angel’s brother Tracker is furious. He’s sure all the past “accidents” are attempts on Isabeau’s life and he’s determined to find the person behind it all. In Isabeau’s Eyes is a quick action-packed read, full of danger and passion! I really liked Isabeau, she was level headed, thought of others, and had some backbone. Tracker was fun too. Total alpha male sort of caveman. I did like that he did consider Isabeau’s feelings and choices even though he came off as bossy. There were a lot of sizzling encounters! Lots of hot stuff.
Even though this is the first in the Kentucky Nights series, there are a lot of characters I wasn’t familiar with that probably had their stories in previous books. I still enjoyed Isabeau and Tracker’s story, which wraps up. I’m thinking Tracker’s brother Chance will get his own story in the next book and I look forward to it.
I alternated between and e-copy and the audio version and recommend either version. Manxie Hardy is a new-to-me narrator. I really enjoyed her performance of all voices! She had a sultry, smooth voice and gave just a hint of a Southern accent that felt spot on for the characters. I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed. An e-copy was kindly provided by Berkley in exchange for an honest review.
There are stories that are inst-love and others that are insta-lust, and some that successfully navigate both. And then there’s whatever the hell this is, something like the author-has-explained-and-introduced-everything-so-poorly-that-the-insta-is-beyond-psychotic-and-makes-absolutely-no-fucking-sense. Truly, no sense. What’s beyond poorly designed insta-lust? That’s what this is.
What am I reading? The family and friend dynamics are convoluted and make a telenovela look rational and boring. These alpha characters have gone off the deep end into douche territory and beyond even that into creepy predator. And the heroine is the human equivalent of black licorice dipped in yogurt. Her every thought made my face scrunch in distaste.
Everything starts as if you’ve missed 10 chapters and weeks to months of interactions already. And this is not due to this being a spin-off, I’m talking solely about the two main leads. It’s as if the author is trying to make it mysterious and suspenseful, but when it’s basic and necessary backstory and motivations about the MC, it just comes across as bad storytelling. Just tell me what the fuck I’m dealing with here, already. We don’t even get to know if she’s blind, legally blind, or partially blind. What is the point of keeping the reader in the dark? And yes, I chose that wording with intent.
Every 3rd page a man claims he’s going to kill someone for any number of slights. Friend, foe, doesn’t matter, a man twitched in the wrong direction and “he’d kill the bastard”. Not sexy. Just dull.
Each character has only 2-3 brain cells and the same number of thoughts between them, which are regurgitated on repeat.
Also! I thought the gathering was some big family/clan annual reunion. Something that’s close-knit and outsiders not welcome. So what’s with all the women she keeps overhearing lusting after this guy? Aren’t they relations? Nothing about the writing or storytelling is clearly explained or laid out well. It’s just one big mess.
And that takes me to 50% in. I’m gonna skim to the end now. I’m actually curious if it can get worse, or if there’s some truly good kinky sex that makes it worth it.
The answer is yes, it got worse. Weirdly convoluted. And no, not worth it. Not sexy, it got coercive and predatory and creepy. The woman is almost murdered and this dick’s response is to carry her home, feel she’s shaking in fear, so he lays her down and mauls her, thinking all the while if he bites and marks her there’d be no doubt who she belongs to. They’re not dating. They’ve known each other two days. They’ve spoken, maybe, 10 sentences to each other. Fuck this noise.

I really liked the Nauti boys and girls series, which this book is connected to, but was so underwhelmed by this one and not really sure why. I liked Isabeau, felt bad for her and all that she had been through. Didn't really care for Tracker, he really didn't come off good, I feel like Isabeau could have done better. While I'm glad that they all discovered what went on in the past for Isabeau, the truth was a hard one to learn. Since I wasn't so hot on Tracker, I'm meh...on the two of them ending up together. I found I was more interested in learning more about Natchez's long lost relative, that will be fun to see play out.
This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.
Introduction In Isabeau's Eyes is the first book in the Kentucky Nights series. I really had such a fun time with this one. I had been hearing the best of things for it, and I did get this one in a ARC form and I was so happy that I was able to. I will admit that I was a bit nervous in picking this one up here. It has been a little while since we have received anything from this author so I was intrigued to see what this one would be like and I have to say that this one just kicked booty! I absolutely had so much fun with this one even if it had some tropes that aren't my favorite to read, but Lora Leigh really kicked this one out of the pick. It definitely has the sass and spice that you have come to expect from her and it delivered in so many ways for me.
Summary Isabeau Boudreaux is being hunted. When her parents were murdered, she was shot and became blind because of it. But she survived, but now she is being stalked and people she cares about are being put in danger, but she doesn't want to reach out to her brother who will just place her in a different spot in the country starting fresh again and she wants to stay with the place she calls home and those she considers family. Then enters the picture...Tracker Calloway, who is determined to protect her and find the killer before anyone else gets harmed. There is an instant connection between them, but Tracker only does casual sex and nothing permanent. As Isabeau and Tracker work together both in and outside of the bedroom, they will discover a fierce love to fight for.
My Outlook In Isabeau's Eyes we have a story where the author implements the "Fling" trope and yeah I wasn't sure how that one would fly in this one, but honestly, she really worked her magic for it because I ended up loving it so dearly. It was so endearing the way that these two connect with each other. You can tell that there is some great chemistry but also wonderful attention and care for each other. I really was charmed by the way that they are with each other and the ways in which the hero courts his girl without courting her haha. Tracker only does casual and its for a certain reason, but seeing the way that Isabeau tears down his walls was so delightful. She has a sweet nature but can be sassy when she needs to be. I really loved her character as she was so well balanced. I am on the fence in how the author implemented "the disability" aspect to the story. I think if I am being honest, if she had stayed blind. I wasn't a big fan of the disability being reversed. But I can also see why it worked for this story due to the certain developments of the plot. The villain in the story was a surprise though, I actually thought it was someone else like her brother (I know I know but his dialogue with his friend felt kinda sinister at times haha, and yeah I was off the mark and I need his book). I have to say that I am intrigued to see where the author is planning on taking this one. But curious to see how she plans on developing this series, I have a feeling we have just tipped the spear on what she will build in this series.
Overall View In Isabeau's Eyes is a brilliantly penned romantic suspense that kept me on the edge with thrilling plot building, sexy sensuality and just enough humor to balance it out and deliver a stunning return from a epic author!
Glad to read about the other characters from previous nauti series. At first, h was more likeable than H; however, by the end of this story, her behavior made no sense, but guess in that way, the story can go on. The chemistry was ok, not as hot as some of the author's books.
I am sorry but I have never dnf’d a book so fast. Only one chapter in and I am so confused. How does one person have so many “accidents” and yet still be ok?? There are too many characters to follow who means what to who and I am just utterly confused. Sorry but this one is not for me.
I DNF’d at 15%. The first chapter is an unpleasant combination of in media res action and an infodump on the relationships of the Mackay family and friends. For readers who haven’t finished the early Mackay series before this spin-off, too many character names are introduced too rapidly to be meaningful.
After slogging through the first chapter, it didn’t take long to realize that the main male characters we’re controlling alphaholes who would tediously confront each other throughout the book. While Tracker (lol) didn’t infantilize Isabeau to the extent of her male relatives and friends, he was just as guilty of boundary stomping. No, thanks.
Lots of mercenary talk. I guess you need to read the other series first. There are so many inferred stories, and so many characters thrown at you. I didn’t think there was good character development with the two main people. The bad guy didn’t get much hype either.
Action, adventure and love in this one that mashes up two of my favorite genres. . Isabeau lost her vision ten years ago after a violent attack. This isn’t the only bad luck she’s had. As each incident piles up it’s beginning to look like this isn’t simply bad luck. This is romantic suspense at its finest.
Huge thank you to @berkleypub and @netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆ This is the first in a new series, although there are links to earlier ones which fans will enjoy. There are definitely places where you are aware that there is a backstory which come from those links, but I didn't feel it would have any impact on a newbie, just a reminder for a fan.
The concept behind this book was really interesting to me to think about – and I always like a twist which makes me really try and get into the head of a protagonist. In this case, Isabeau's loss of sight due to a violent attack which killed her parents, and which is now slowly returning. It should be something to celebrate, yet she is uncertain as to whether it would be a permanent return, and given the danger which surrounds her, it could be dangerous to reveal it. Most of all, how must it feel inside to think that one's previously normal life could be restored, should indeed that sight return. All this added so much to the story.
It has to be said the ineptitude of the perpetrator to finish off the deed was almost laughable, but not in a good way. I think that their identity was clear quite early on, yet there are some strange redirects which had me questioning my assumptions – always a good thing in a mystery.
As to Tracker and his charms... well, it is fun watching him and Isabeau navigate the danger and the intense attraction they have for each other. It is fast and chemistry laden, but in her shoes, with someone clearly wanting her dead, I would have jumped in with both feet too!
I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in this perfect escapism series.
Mary Jo – ☆☆☆ This is the first book in a new series by Lora Leigh. It takes me back to Somerset Kentucky where I first met the Nauti Boys, Rowdy, Dawg, and Natches. ~sigh~
In this series, we are meeting the second generation of the Mackays. Tracker has grown up working with his parents, doing covert missions since he was old enough to know better, and he will do anything to protect his sister, Angel.
Isabeau Boudreaux is back in town trying to make a life for herself. Fifteen years ago, she survived a gunshot wound to the head. Instead of killing her, it left her blind with no memories of the night her parents died. Since that time, she's had a number of near misses which can no longer be called coincidental. Tracker has decided that in order to keep his sister and family safe, it's up to him to find out who's behind these accidents.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's predictable in the way insta-love/insta-lust stories often are. There are a lot of moving parts (secondary characters) and not all of them work in this story. Isabeau's need for independence is hampered by her brother's and his friends’ overprotectiveness yet she doesn't seem to mind it until it comes between her potential hook-up with Tracker.
I wish we would have more of the backstory of how Tracker met Isabeau and how their relationship evolved over that time rather than being dropped into the middle after Isabeau's accident.
I probably will read the next book in the series as I am curious about the other characters we were introduced to.

Too tempting to not take the risk of being burned …
One more new-to-me author I have to add to my never ending list of favorites. I was immediately sucked into the pages, eager to see how those two would work together and unravel what none other had before. As a romantic suspense, I thought it would at first focus on the investigation then the growing relationship. How I was wrong, Isabeau and Tracker are central and center pieces in this story. A longing that only awaits the spark to ignite the kindling to become a giant bonfire. It is the development of their affair that takes the main stage, enhancing the inertia of the crowd around Isabeau, one that never really bothered to seek the right answers. Tracker lies to himself and everyone else, what he instantly felt for Isabeau is not mere lust, it is something deeper, stronger and maddening, a caring he does not want to feel. It is rough and raw and so unexpected, he pushes her away with his words but holds her close with his arms. Isabeau has finally enough to be the wounded fledgling. So when she escapes once again unharmed from another “accident”, this time, it could have injured someone else than her. So for once, instead of running away to kick her wounds, she stands her ground and agree to investigate.
With this tale, Leigh gifts us a wild sensuous dance between a protective predator and his willing prey, turning the villain in a pale shadow. A fast paced over the chart sultry tale. 5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
This was a wonderful read for many reasons. One being the fact that I got to visit with one of my favorite families. I see a reread in my future. If you haven't yet read the Nauti series I would go back and read them. Yes you don't need to read them to read this one but you are really missing out.
I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. Or at least it seems like a long time. I miss with Lora Leigh isn't writing. I really enjoy her stories and find them to be well written and sexy as hell. Her heroes are strong alpha men would do anything to protect those that they love. Her heroines are just as kick ass and strong. They don't sit on the sideline and wait to be taken care of.
In Isabeau's Eyes is the first in a new series buy her but is in the same world as her Nauti books. You'll love both Isabeau and Tracker. These two go through a ton of crap before they come out on the other side.
Isabeau is friends with the Mackay's and has been since she was a young kid. Sadly, her life hasn't been an easy one since the death of her parents and her almost dying when shot in the head. Because of all she has gone through she really hasn't lived her life. She has a bunch of crap that has happened as she's grown and a older brother who has done his best to keep her protected. Being blind only adds up to the long list of things she has had to work through.
Tracker is probably one of scariest heroes I've read. Most of that is due to the fact that he doesn't really care about himself anymore. He just does his job (one he does well) and moves on to the next. He doesn't really live. I'm very sad for him. He does love his sister and would do anything for her. That's includes protecting a woman who almost got his sister killed.
In Isabeau's Eyes is an action-packed story that keeps moving from page one. Not only will you enjoy the whole mystery of what happened to Isabeau's parents you'll also be part of Tracker and Isabeau falling in love.
I really enjoyed this story and felt it was well worth the wait. I think though I enjoyed it so much because I know who all the players are or most of them. I think if you go into this book without that knowledge then it might not be as good of a story for you as it was for me. I would think it would go one of two ways. You'll feel totally lost like you are missing something or you'll rush to read the Nauti Boys and Nauti Girls series. Either way you are in for a treat.
IN ISABEAU’S EYES is the first instalment in Lora Leigh’s contemporary adult KENTUCKY NIGHTS erotic, romantic suspense series-a spin off from the author’s NAUTI series. This is Tracker Calloway, and twenty-five year old high school teacher Isabeau Boudreaux’ story line. You do not have to head read the original NAUTI series but for cohesion and backstory, I recommend reading the aforementioned series.
Told from third person perspective IN ISABEAU’S EYES follows in the wake of another attempt on Isabeau’s life. Ten years earlier someone murdered Isabeau’s parents, but not before shooting our heroine in the head. Blinded by a bullet to the brain, Isabeau would be protected by her half-brother Burke and his extended family in Texas, while befriending the tight knit Mackay family of Kentucky. Fast forward to present day, wherein another attempt on Isabeau’s life, the sixth attempt in a decade, will also threaten the life of Angel Calloway, a young woman with close connections to Natches Mackay.Over protective to a fault, the Mackay family rallies around our story line heroine but Tracker Calloway will lay claim to the woman with whom he will fall in love. What ensues is the search for a killer, as Isabeau’s sight slowly returns.
Tracker Calloway doesn’t do relationships and has warned Isabeau Boudreaux that he will never fall in love but Isabeau wants a chance at a normal life having been babied by her brother and extended family for as long as she can remember . Isabeau is tired of the attempts on her life, often wondering if bad luck is the only luck she will ever know, but someone is targeting our story line heroine, and the Mackay family and friends have a large, extended reach.
The relationship between Tracker and Isabeau begins as a best friend’s, older brother relationship in which Isabeau is friends with Tracker’s foster sister Angel. Tracker’s attraction to Isabeau is immediate and strong but Tracker refuses to get involved with a woman he might not be around to protect. Isabeau wants to feel normal but everyone in her life treats her like glass including her half brother Burke, and US Navy SEALs Saul and Seth August. Isabeau has fallen in love with Tracker Calloway but Tracker has warned Isabeau he’s gone once the killer is found. The $ex scenes are erotic, passionate and intense.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including most of the NAUTI series couples, and the second generation relations. We are introduced to Isabeau’s half brother Burke, and US Navy SEALs Saul and Seth August, and several members of the Reapers MC.
IN ISABEAU’S EYES is a story of obsession and betrayal, family and relationships, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is provocative and seductive; the characters are determined, dynamic and energetic.
In Insabeau’s Eyes is the kick off to a new romantic suspense series by Lora Leigh. But, if you haven’t read earlier books in her Mackays series, you might be a little lost.
2.5/5 stars
Isabeau’s parents died and she was blinded by bullet to the head when she was 15 years old. Ten years later, someone is still trying to kill her. She thinks it’s just bad luck—really?—and isn’t completely convinced someone wants to hurt her. When the tire of the truck she’s riding in with her friend Angel is shot out, Angel’s brother Tracker takes one look at her and makes it his mission to protect her no matter what. Their growing attraction is just one more obstacle they face while Isabeau’s life continues to be at risk as her vision slowly returns.
This was my first book by Lora Leigh. While it’s listed as the start of a new series, I felt I like was missing a ton by not knowing the recurring characters from earlier books. I was confused about who was related to who and what their motivations were supposed to be. It wasn’t even clear if Tracker and Isabeau’s relationship was super quick insta love, or if they’d met in a previous book.
I am a fan of romantic suspense, but this book didn’t work for me. Isabeau is a passive character, and rarely sticks up for herself. If her brother and his friends aren’t walking all over her, Tracker is. I understand that at the beginning of the story she’s supposed to be limited in her choices because of her blindness but it shouldn’t mean that she lets everyone in her life treat her like a child. And aside from physical attraction and some steamy scenes, it’s hard to figure out why Tracker and Isabeau are together. The suspense part of the story kept my interest, though, and made me want to keep reading to see what happened.
I am a fan of steamy romantic suspense, and stories with strong characters who fight for themselves. In Isabeau’s Eyes delivers on some of the mystery elements, but it didn’t feel like the beginning of a new series. If you haven’t read and liked previous Lora Leigh books, I’d skip this one.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a sexy romance, as are most by this author. The writing is wonderful and completely appreciated, living up to par for this author. Lora Leigh is a master at bedroom antics. Unfortunately, the characters in this story were difficult for me to gain depth of understanding, which meant it took a long for me to like them. I liked the idea of a blind character and how the author handled this. That was novel and truly creative. There was so much going on in the story, and so many characters I didn't know since I haven't read others in this series. I feel as if you needed to read the previous installments in the series to fully understand why characters were there and their relationships to the main characters. There was a sense of, well you know how he or she is, and that's why that character did that. It happened more than I anticipated. What was left is that there were parts I feel as if I didn't fully appreciate. The main hero is hot, intense and super sexy. However, it didn't work well with the heroine who was stubborn and didn't quite jive for some reason with the hero. I'm fully on board for a tough heroine and intense hero, Perhaps, the issue was the instant lust/love in this book was so slam you in the face that there was little character development to explain why other than instant lust. Here again, something happened in the past that was not explained in this book (how the main characters met and what happened back then) which left their actual love story a bit flatter than I would have liked. It was hard to follow the characters into falling for each other with how sudden it started. I did love the mystery aspect to this book and how that worked out. If you're looking for a sexy romp with some action adventure but you're not too worried about what happened before to the characters or understanding all the ins-and-outs, then this is a great read for you. Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC.

"In Isabeau's Eyes" is my first romance novel. I read a Danielle Steele book previously and liked it, but this one is much different in a lot of ways, including most of all that it has explicit sex scenes. A lot of time I felt that Ms. Leigh's book was all about how to deliver the reader from one sex scene to the next.
I believe that what I found most exasperating about the book was that the characters are mostly caricatures of human beings: manly fighting men and secret agents and "Homeland Security" and Navy SEALs, and super sexy, feminine women.
I ask myself about the kind of market a book like this has, and Ms. Leigh's place in it, as a writer. I imagine that women read this kind of kinky book in order to learn about sex, and they end up reading about a fantasy version of sex. Men also read them: apparently there are some very good MLB players who are into this genre, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.
Surprisingly, I found it a laborious read: it took me several afternoons in a row to finish it. I found myself begging that an editor had trimmed the "the fact that" down to "that" and done something about alleviating Ms. Leigh's readers of all the "Damn" this and "Hell" that and all of the unnecessary "F word" occasions.
I am finding myself in my 56th year having learned a lot about not quitting a book or anything else I am determined to do, despite it being a "hard middle," and I am satisfied with myself that I finished "In Isabeau's Eyes." And there is no doubt that I learned something from the book, not the least that an "MC" is a "motorcycle club" and not a "Mexican Cartel."
But, with "In Isabeau's Eyes" I will be ending my experiment with romance novels for now. And I am glad that I checked this one out of the library and did not buy it.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is the first book in a new series by Lora Leigh. It takes me back to Somerset Kentucky where I first met the Nauti Boys, Rowdy, Dawg and Natches. ~sigh~
In this series we are meeting the second generation of the Mackays. Tracker has grown up working with his parents doing covert missions since he was old enough to know better, and he will do anything to protect his sister Angel.
Tracker has decided that in order to keep his sister, and family safe, it's up to him to find out who's behind these accidents.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's predictable in the ways of the insta-love/insta-lust stories often are. There are a lot of moving parts (secondary characters) and not all of them work in this story. Isabeau's need for independence is hampered by her brother's and his friends overprotectiveness yet she doesn't seem to mind it until it comes between her potential hook up with Tracker.
I wish we would have more of the back story of how Tracker met Isabeau and how their relationship evolved over that time rather than being dropped into the middle after Isabeau's accident.
I probably will read the next book in the series as I am curious about the other characters we were introduced to.
Isabeau has faced tragedies in her life. She lost her parents and her sight in a violent attack. She now wants to try to live in peace, but her past may still have her in harm’s way. She is surrounded by a good group of people but still, trouble has found her. Isabeau’s best friend’s brother stepped in to help, and the attraction is undeniable between them.
I must first warn that while this advertised as the first book in the series, it is not a true standalone. There are many characters from a previous series that are heavily involved in the storyline, which complicates things. At times, I felt a little lost or that I should know information that was not privy to me in the detailing of the story. Fans who have read the other books may feel differently.
The steam factor is there. This is Lora Leigh, so there is no question about the level of sexiness in her books. However, the character development is off. The main characters fall in love too fast. I’m basically saying that it was on sight, which leaves little to no room for a substantial connection. In my eyes, this is just purely lust. However, the author calls it love.
Tracker is this take-charge Alpha male who does over-the-top things throughout the story. The other men in the book are just as outrageous, which almost makes it comical at times. Instead of feeling turned off, I rolled my eyes a few times.
Now with all that I just said, I still really enjoyed this story. I have read a dozen or so books by this author. I know what to expect. This may not have been the best for me by her, but I’m still a long-time fan of hers and look forward to the other books in the series.
Review: IN ISABEAU’S EYES (Kentucky Nights Book 1) by Lora Leigh http://bit.ly/3LIDOZS Publication Date: March 21, 2023 Genre: Romantic Suspense Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas: Donna Rated 4 Stars
I liked Isabeau. She was strong and resilient, able to stand up for herself without being a harpy. Yes, she made some silly mistakes in judgement, but that is also part of the story. Tracker was Ms. Leigh’s typical alpha male (with all the good and bad thrown in). He appreciated her strengths and helped her along. As happens, there was no real build up to their romance and instead combusted rather quickly. I enjoyed their chemistry and didn’t mind their insta-lust. The story itself was exciting and yet a bit confusing. I wanted to rate this book a 5, but it all got rather convoluted with so many characters that were just there – like we were supposed to know who they were. The Mackays from the Nauti series were included in the book and it has been quite a while since I’ve read them. I should have gone back to refresh my memory as to the relationship. Then so many other characters that were treated as if I should know who they were and why they were there. Like I said – confusing. It brought me out of the story at times. Now that I have a feel for this series, I can’t wait for the next book.

Isabeau Boudreaux has been just barely escaping life-threatening accidents since she almost died, and lost her sight, the night someone killed her parents and tried to kill her. It isn't until Tracker Calloway gets involved and refused to believe the 'accident' stories that things begin to ramp up.
The latest 'accident' isn't a blown tire at the worst possible turn in the road, but a bullet shot-out tire hoping to led to a drive off the cliff. Refusing to let this get brushed off, Tracker digs into Isabeau's past and creates a circle of protection. But it's obviously to protect his innocent bystander sister who was in the car at the time and not because of any interest in Isabeau.
Determined to live her life, Isabeau agrees to let Tracker help. Little did she know that she would come to crave Tracker like nothing else even if he's going to end up hurting her when he leaves. Surprisingly, Isabeau's eyes are also beginning to heal and with her returning sight comes the memories of the night her parents were killed. Bringing danger closer and closer to her door.
While I was surprised to find this novel an addition to the family and region of the Nauti series, it was also great to see some old favorite characters again! That doesn't even count the raunchy, erotic fun of Lora Leigh's characters finding love!
DNF @ 13% Feeling so disappointed. I really wanted to like it because I used to read a lot from Lora Leigh.
- Almost entirely telling instead of showing. I’ve seen almost no showing. - Non-stop info dumps that disrupt the flow and action of the story. Is not engaging and does not make the reader curious about plot or character. - Massive POV violations and jumping straight into another character’s head mid-chapter. Author seems unsure of narrative positioning. - Introduction of way too many characters right off the bat. - Characters fall flat for me, nothing to attach to or become invested in. Likely heavily due to lack of showing. We get told what they supposedly feel, but never see them feeling that way through sensations, movements, etc. - Too many overblown dialogue tags and weak verbs that constantly need adverbs to beef them up at all. - Needs a professional editor, who wouldn’t have to work as hard if the author was committed to growth. The idea is fantastic and feels fresh, but the execution kills it at the starting block. Needs an overhaul. Improving the above things listed would make this so much stronger and, as we all want, much more captivating.
Isabeau has lived with darkness since she was fifteen. She has tempted fate just as long. But when danger ensnares her friend, she decides to stand and fight.
In Isabeau's Eyes by Lora Leigh is first Kentucky Nights series. A spinoff which allows us to return to the Mackay world.
I love returning to this world. I love seeing Angel's brother find someone other than her to look after. I loved getting to know Tracker. He didn't claim many but once he claimed you you were his. And inspite of himself he is claiming Isabeau. I love seeing him protect her even as he tried to protect his heart. And finding out who has had Isabeau in their sights doesn't give him the distance necessary to protect himself especially as he doesn't realize he needs it until far too late. I thoroughly enjoyed the heat Ms. Leigh brought to this story. I loved seeing Tracker find out he could care for more than family. I loved seeing Isabeau find someone who saw her and not her disability and bad luck. I look forward to where Ms. Leigh will take us next in this world.
