Paranormal MI5 #1

Spells & Death

Rate this book
Part witch, part ghost, total book nerd.

Gemma Abbott is a dead witch. Sort of. As a pure Essex witch, she’s permanently attached to Mother Earth’s ley lines. Pure magic equals life force. Which is the only thing that’s stopping Gemma’s body from dying and her soul from moving on.

A Paranormal MI5 agent, Gemma’s life work is to protect the ley lines. The magic contained within them is sacred, pure. When a serial killer starts leaving clues for Gemma, she quickly realises that not only does he know her secret, he’s trying to steal the magic out from under her.

As each new body is found, Gemma feels the lessening of magic that keeps her alive. She has no choice but to tell the one person she trusts. Dave, the cute admin guy. Although he sits behind a desk, his geeky mind could solve anything. Together, they have to find the serial killer, before he drains the Earth of magic, and kills every living thing on it.

Interesante, entretenido

"No matter how long we live in the darkness, there's always a light in the distance. Don't ever stop aiming for it, for one day, we will reach it."

I really loved this novel. This story follows Gemma whom is a kick ass main character. Her love of books is prominent throughout this entire novel and it makes me so happy. From Gemma wearing only bookish t-shirts to discussing book boyfriends; I really loved how this story really incorporated my love for reading within these pages.

This story was very character driven and learning more about Gemma and her team. I loved her growth over the course of this novel. I loved her 'desk friend' Dave. He truly loves Gemma and I love that he is slowing trying to break down her walls.

Kate I think is a wonderful and kick ass supporting character. Learning more about her past was really illuminating to see the struggles that people can encounter in life and how people rise above what's transpired.

The mystery about who this serial killer is kept me at the edge of my toes this entire novel. I have an idea of who he may be...but this novel leaves us on a serious cliff hangar.

This was my first Rachel Medhurst novel, but I know it definitely won't be my last! I highly recommend this novel!

Has potential

Gemma’s having a crap day, and I was thoroughly enjoying it. However, I felt that a little more world building was needed as not all references were adequately addressed.

The characters seemed fun, and there is a lot of potential with the ensemble, and I do want to know what is behind her mothers insistence about Gemma marrying a yet unknown witch. Very secretive and mysterious.

2.5 stars. Meh. It had loads of potential but just failed to reach it. It was also only half a story with an abrupt cliffhanger and no resolution. Almost like the author wrote a whole story then arbitrarily chopped it in half so they would have two books. I did like Gemma's book obsession and how she would fit author signings around her work but otherwise found her a bit annoying and I felt like the other characters lacked any depth.

Spells & Death follows Gemma Abbott, who we briefly met in Medhurst's Hunted Witch Agency series. Gemma works for Paranormal MI5, and she's been shot dead, and yet somehow, she's alive. There's a serial killer on the loose and it's up to Gemma and her team to figure out who's killing these women. Also, there's the situation of Gemma feeling like she's losing her connection to the ley lines and she's not sure if it's because she's kind of dead.

I loved Gemma from the very start. She's funny and strong, and I can completely relate to her love of reading. She defended her book boyfriends with a quirky fierceness. She's got a great team consisting of Dave, who usually stays behind the desk, Jake, who's a shifter, and Kate, who's a seer. They have unique and helpful skills, I am looking forward to more out of them in future books. I'm curious to see if anything blossoms between Gemma and Dave.

This was such a fun book, with a great mix of supernatural elements. It gets fast-paced and intense at times, making for great suspense. Gemma always had a new fandom t-shirt on that was great fun. I'm so excited this is the start of a new series, and I can't wait for more.

I am one of Rachel Medhurst’s advanced readers, which means I’m lucky enough to get her books before they are released. I really enjoyed her last series, Hunted Witch Agency, and was looking forward to the spin-off. Just as Gemma appeared in that series, Devon and her team briefly appear in this one. For the most part, this book is about Gemma, her desk friend Dave, and Jake and Kate, the other members of her team.

It was easy to become engaged with these characters and the plot. It’s pretty fast-paced, with lots of action, and the characters, despite their paranormal qualities, come across as regular people. It’s clear that Gemma and Dave are dancing around their attraction for one another (think Scully & Mulder), and I’m looking forward to seeing more of that in the next book.

This book ends with some uncertainty. It’s not complete, but it’s not one of those books that made me want to throw my Kindle. I feel I have enough information to wait for the next one without too much discomfort. To be fair, this really was the best place to end this first book. I enjoy Rachel Medhurst’s writing style and her stories, so I recommend this one.

I enjoyed this (even if it took me half of forever to read it!) The story was fun and I really liked Gemma. She is spunky and strong, but has faults she is just starting to come to terms with. Her team is interesting and I would love to get to know them better. I'll continue on with the series!

A great book that has paranormal aspects and has characters that you fall for. The quirky team and it's leader all have a bit of emotional baggage and are learning that the do have wach other if only they would let themselves. This book kept me on my toes trying to figure things out. I really enjoyed the characters and the depth that they all had. This could turn into a great series of books! A must read!.

I felt like I was dropped into a world that I should already know as the references to situations and characters were incomplete. While I liked the premise of a Paranormal MI5, I couldn't get past Gemma's anger/self doubt/afraid to open up/Mommy/etc/etc/etc issues. Less of that and more of the story would have helped. I don't intend to read the next book.

Lost me before the first chapter was even good and started. Just terrible writing. I know writers are given the (incredibly misunderstood) advice to begin in the middle of the action, but readers NEED TO KNOW STUFF. Like, you know, that pesky worldbuilding and stuff. This one's just unnecessarily clumsy.

DNF.

Sigh.

I really hate non-endings...

Just give me an ending. Happily ever after or sad. The characters were engaging, the plot was fast moving, a real page turner...and then nothing. Very disappointing.

only part of the story

Not a book more like part one. All the questions are posed but none answered it’s a deplorable tactic. My last book from this author.

“Part witch, part ghost, total book nerd.”

Even if I hadn’t totally loved Rachel Medhurst’s Hunted Witch Agency series, from which her new Paranormal MI5 series was spun off, and would have totally grabbed me with the last three words of that tagline. No surprise, though, that Spells & Death (Paranormal MI5, Book 1) is actually a pretty spectacular book. I love the idea behind it’s lead, Gemma, a pure Essex witch, Who technically should be deceased but is kept going by the life force in the pure magic of Mother Earth’s ley lines, which she is permanently attached to. Her utterly cool job as a paranormal MI5 agent works perfectly with this since she and her team are tasked with protecting those very ley lines. That’s the perfect setup for this book (serial killer, the deaths of whose victims drain the key lines pure magic - adding an extra motivation to catch the killer, not that it is needed) and for the series to come. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

I love Gemma! Not only is she a book nerd and proud of it, but she's a kick arse Paranormal MI5 agent. And a powerful Essex witch to boot.
The plot of Spells & Death was totally captivating for me right from the start - with Gemma being shot during a stakeout and the repercussions of that. Plus following the case that prompted the stakeout and its connection with a string of murders kept me engrossed and chomping at the bit to find out what was going to happen.  And I really enjoyed reading more about Gemma's background (after being introduced to her as Devon's cousin in the Hunted Witch Agency series) and watching her interactions with her desk friend Dave and their teammates Kate and Jake.
I also love Ms. Medhurst's imaginative character development - in addition to Gemma, having a witch who needs to use other witches' magic, a seer, and a wolf shifter made for an incredibly interesting read! My one & only issue with this novel is that I have to wait for the next book to come out in order to find out how things play out (darn cliffhangers!)... but I've absolutely no doubt it will be worth the wait!

Usually, Kindle freebies are hit and miss with quality. This time, it was a winner. Apparently, Spells & Death Paranormal MI5 is a spin off of another series called Hunted Witch Series. I have not read them.
This is an urban fantasy where werewolves, vampires and witches participate in police work. Gemma is an Essex Witch who gains her power from Mother Earth's ley lines.
Someone is killing ordinary people. That someone is a supernatural. It is up to Emma and her team to find him before as soon as possible. Time is the essence because the killer is sucking the life out of the ley line As the synopsis indicates, she is actually dead but the ley line is keeping her alive.
Emma is a kick ass, strong young lady. But she is also awkward and distant towards her team and prefers to snuggle up with a good book. This struggle of being an Essex witch and wanting to be an introvert is real.
I went immediately to Book 2 because there was a true cliff hanger.

WOAH. Did not expect to like it as much as I did after reading about Devon and the HWA. It took me a few chapters to warm up to and understand the dynamic of the story and relationships, but I came to really love the characters! The mystery is still a mystery, twists and turns all over the place, very unpredictable! The writing was great and allowed me to connect to the story, as it was written in a believable way. Unless this series takes a really bad, "wtf were you thinking?" moment, I'll probably finish the series and love each book more than the last! Rachel Medhurst is funny, realistic, and writes about the true feelings of women, book nerds and their emotional dilemmas to be precise (of which I can relate). Already bummed that I have to wait so long until the next one! But seriously, PSA to writers, WE LOVE YOUR WRITING, SO WRITE LONGER BOOKS SO WE CAN FANGIRL EVEN MORE ABOUT THE CHARACTERS, AND LIVE A BIT LONGER IN THIS FANTASY WORLD.

4.5/5 What a great start to a new series! I don't want to say too much as I feel it's best not to know more than is revealed in the blurb going in. Gemma Abbott was previously introduced in the author's Hunted Witch Agency series. I could completely relate to Gemmma and her introverted, socially awkward, book loving ways. The premise for the story was interesting and unique. The characters who make up Gemma's Paranormal MI5 team are wonderful and quirky. I'm looking forward to finding out more about them in the following books. Devon Jinx from the Hunted Witch Agency made a brief cameo. Hopefully she and her team will continue to pop in from time to time throughout this series. I can hardly wait for October to find out what happens next!

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily reviewing.

A spin-off from the Hunted Witches series, this one features Gemma, another Essex witch, and her MI5 investigative team.
The book is chock full of bad guys, vampires, demons and encounters with assorted nasties, interspersed with loads of quirky, book-nerd and single girl humour and angst.
Amusing, light reading of the paranormal sort that centres around the 4 MI5 members, all paranormals of one sort or another.
As Gemma works her way through this case, she realizes that she doesn't know her team mates very well. Unfortunately, that means we, as readers, don't know a lot about them either. Fortunately, this is only book one so we have lots to look forward to including, I suspect, the occasional cameo by the Hunted Witches Agency crew.
Liked the book, looking forward to more of the same.

A fantastic start to a promising new series!
Spells & Death by Rachel Medhurst is a different and rather unique story that focuses on Gemma Abbott, a witch who draws her energy from ley lines and who works for Paranormal M15. She is an introvert who loves books. Background information is given about Gemma so the reader gets to know her better.
There is a lot happening in this book.
Well written with a good plot and storyline, it is fast paced with suspense and lots of twists that keeps the reader guessing at all times.
In addition to Gemma, her newly formed team consists of Dave, Jake and Kate, each personality with their own gifts, quirks and foibles. The characters develop as the story unfolds.
I found this to be an amazing, entertaining, and fun book to read. Recommended!
Gifted with a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I just love love love Gemma she is not only a kick ar$e Agent but also a book nerd and socially awkward yet she totally owns it. Things start to go sideways for her after trying to grab a guy she had been watching and now she is kind alive but kind dead and doesn't know how to deal with it, We get to see her go through the emotions of whats happening as well as get to know her team of Dave her desk friend, Jake the wolf shifter and Kate the seerer. There is plenty of mystery, twists and some good lol moments while Gemma and the team work their current case as well as Gemma find out whats actually going on with her. You will be hooked from the get go and gutted when you get to the end because you are left going noooo I need more!

Once I started reading I didn’t want to put it down. I loved Gemma, her attitude towards books is so in line with mine, she is feisty and strong but she does tend to shut out real people in favour of the characters in her beloved books. Only after she dies (kind of) does she actually realize how she has isolated herself & how little she knows about her team. The book is full of suspense as the team race to find a serial killer & a group of paranormals who want to end the world as everyone knows it. I had to laugh at loud at times, especially with the banter from the boys. The characters are well-developed and the plot moves along at a fast pace with plenty going on to hold your attention from page 1 & that Cliffhanger... can’t wait to see how things pan out in the next book.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

A wonderful start to a new series. Her mother had started training her to use her magic and to be an agent from the tender age of 5. Now she had her own team and so what if her life was work and books. However this new case was driving her crazy. The organisation PFF was out to make the humans aware of the supernaturals. That's why she was chasing the suspect when he shot and killed her. Or did he? Add in blood rituals, demons, a serial killer and a man in a mask. Why was he out to kill the witches with her power? What can she do to stop him? How long before death claims her? A great read with wonderful lively characters that you can see in your mind's eye as you read their story.

Ok if you like paranormal

The thing I dislike about paranormal as a genre is quite evident in this book: rather than doing a thorough job of character and world-building, it’s made up as it goes along. In the very beginning of the book, for instance, the main character, a witch named Gemma, casts a spell that immobilizes someone she’s pursued. Then she takes out handcuffs to restrain him. Hello? What happened to that immobilizing magic?

Still, it’s written with few technical flaws, so if you can deal with the lack of realism (mainly due to the lack of world-building), you might be entertained by this book. A warning, though: it’s a cliff-hanger. Even so, I didn’t feel hung on enough to go on to the next book.

What a great book! I have one main complaint - the book is too short, i was very unhappy when i finished it - i wanted more. This is the first book of hers that i have read and I’m hooked.
The main character is both a kick ass agent and an introverted “book nerd”. The author has a nice blend of the 2 aspects and shows a change in both to become better. The secondary characters are interesting and I’m hoping that future books will get more into them. The story is interesting and keeps you involved.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, fantasy, interesting characters and stories.

A total cliffhanger

Gamma Abbott is a very powerful witch and a secret agent for the Paranormal MI6 unit. She has been trained since birth for her job. She is a booklover, an introvert and socially awkward. Her mother is her boss. When she is shot and a serial killer shows up with her as a target, her world tilts sideways. While this is a good read with a likeable main character, it is a total cliffhanger. There is no warning about this and as a reader I find it extremely annoying. It is not as if there are a few loose ends which carry over into the next book. There is just no ending.

What’s Up with the Ley Lines?!?

Gemma is an Essex Witch, one who can access the power of the Ley lines directly. She is also responsible for helping protect them. She is a paranormal MI5 agent but most people think she’s a librarian. She loves books, has a cat familiar and she is dead…sort of, maybe. Someone shot her and she died but she’s still breathing and her heart still beats. Will she figure out who wants her dead? And who is pulling power from the Ley lines? Before she’s really, really dead.
This gets a 4 for the overuse of a phrase. Kept taking me out of the story. See if you pick it out too.

Awesome book. It was a quick read that seemedto take longer because it was so engaging.
I loved that Gemma started off with a life changing situation and ended with another one. Her learning to open up to her group was a growing experience for her.
I really liked how there was a connection to previous books so that there was a connection to a previous read, Deadliners.
Rachel Medhurst is a wonderful writer with stories that are interesting and captivating.
Can't wait to read more of her books.

A new series and story set in the magical world of London from the Hunted Witch Series and is the story of Gemma who we met in the Hunted Witch series. The story is a riot and I loved Gemma and Dave. They made me laugh so hard as they work with Kate and Jake to solve crimes for MI5. Well written and very funny I was hooked from the beginning and read it in one sitting. The one liners and Gemma were a blast. I loved the bit of mystery and the setup for the rest of the series. And the ending was a twist and made me want the next one now. I chose to review once I finished laughing.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved it. The magic is outstanding, the world she built is fascinating and the conflict is understandable. I loved how Gemma is unique and not a boring personality. It took her forever to get around to letting her partner, Dave, in on things. The conversations she has with Dave in her ear are too funny sometimes. I also liked that this is a spin-off of the Hunted Witch Agency. I volunteered to read an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
