<기관, 호러작가가 사는 집>, <작자미상, 미스터리 작가가 읽는 책>에 이어 펴내는 미쓰다 신조 '작가' 시리즈 세 번째 편. 미쓰다 신조는 '미쓰다 신조'란 이름을 주인공으로 내세우는 '작가' 시리즈와 방랑 환상소설가 도조 겐야를 화자로 한 '도조 겐야' 시리즈를 집필했다.

<잘린 머리처럼 불길한 것>이 '도조 겐야' 시리즈에 속하는 작품이라면 <백사당, 괴담작가가 들려주는 이야기> 등은 '작가' 시리즈에 속한다. 이 '작가' 시리즈는 메타적인 구조에 환상괴기담을 섞는 경향이 강하다. <백사당, 괴담작가와 들려주는 이야기>는 <사관장>과 함께 한 쌍을 이룬다.

마을 사람들을 절대적인 권력 아래 두고 있는 시골의 오래된 가문 햐쿠미 가. 이 햐쿠미 가의 기묘한 당집 '백사당'에 얽힌 길고도 꺼림칙한 이야기가 끝났다. 미쓰다 신조에게 그 이야기를 해준 다쓰미 미노부가 소설가를 지망한다는 사실을 알고 작가이기 이전에 편집자이기도 한 미쓰다 신조는 그의 이야기에 흥미를 느껴 책으로 엮으려 한다.

미쓰다 신조는 집필 요청을 하기 위해 교토의 다쓰미네 집에 전화를 건다. 하지만 햐쿠미 가문이 있는 마을 주변에서 발생한 어린이 실종 사건을 입에 담자 다쓰미의 태도는 일변한다. 하지만 열흘 정도 후, '사관장'에 얽힌 체험담을 적은 원고가 미쓰다 신조에게 배달된다. 그 원고를 읽기 시작하자 미쓰다 신조의 주변에서 괴기 현상이 일어난다. 뿐만 아니라 흥미를 느껴 원고 복사본을 읽은 후배 편집자 역시 괴기 현상을 겪은 끝에 카페에서 홀연히 사라지고 마는데…

OMG I'd just finished this book and it's so fucking mind-blowing! But I'm not saying this book is flawless but OMG OMG! The entire story is so frightening, intensive and twisted.

Outline of the story: Shinzo Mitsuda, editor of horror novel series and a part-time novelist, is introduced to an indie author, who wrote his frightening childhood experience into his soon-to-be-published debut novel. Mitsuda is intrigued by the author's strange tale but he soon realizes the manuscript gifted to him seems to attract a series of strange events: unseen eyes watching him, strange noise in the dead of night, shadows lurking at the corners, a strange woman in black showing up to haunt Mitsuda and his female coworker; plus the mysterious indie author and his beautiful 'daughter' are also hiding something and it doesn't take long for people around Mitsuda to start disappearing without a trance. So where does reality end and where do fantasy and nightmares begin? Mitsuda, our horror novelist, is going to find out at personal cost.

And the author, Shinzo Mitsuda (the real guy, not the fictional horror novelist, you know), demonstrated with his book that he has the proper taste and knowledge of a horror fan, why would I say that? Because this guy obviously knows some tasteful and legendary bunches of old horror movies and novels, etc.

There're more reasons for me to adore this book as well, I will mention them here:

I like the haunting scenes in this book, those scenes are first-class spooky and at the same time, they are tastefully done without relaying too much on the shock value. If you like Japanese horror movies, you may most likely enjoy those scenes too.

I also like how this story ends, surprisingly there are reasonable explanation for most of the mysteries! Shocking, right?

However, I did find part of the 'explanation' for the secrets of the remote village to be a bit forced and too surreal.

适合黑灯瞎火阅读（。）跟《作者不详》是一种风格，三津田信三在三津田信三的故事里陷入人生大危机。前面铺垫部分有些啰嗦，关于日本恐怖小说的背景介绍占了不少篇幅，不过怪谈开始之后的气氛营造依然优秀（来源不明对长头发和黑暗里苍白的双脚从不让人失望）。
