Listened on audio one afternoon while cleaning house, about 3 hours total....

Have been watching the movie Patton again with my 1 year newer husband who also loves that movie. The movie intrigued me enough to want to learn more about the brash, instinctual, very successful general who the media loathed and took him out of context on many occasions.

He wasn't "nuanced" which seems to be the preferred thing for politicians today, but as Patton said, I am not a poltician and am not looking to be one.

The audio filled me in on some details which I found to be fascinating:
-Patton was dyslexic and had a hard time reading as a youth.
-Once he was in the army, he said "the only use math has ever been to me was to calculate the machine guns opening and the time the bullets would arrive"
-Patton wrote a report in 1937 detailing how Pearl Harbor was vulnerable and the Japanese could easily attack it.

Even if you're not into military history, I find that most people (especially the younger, woker generation) don't realize how much we owe to the WWII veterans and to "Old Blood and Guts"


I will be seeking out some more of the Captivating History books, nice and succinct and enjoy listening to history again

General George Patton, the general who could get things done when no one else could, a man who was not always given the tools he needed to do his job but managed to get it done anyway and a man who angered some of his higher-ups and ended up being taken off the front lines at a time when a good general was most needed.

The book covers Patton's life and it's easy to see how he was a soldier through-and-through. He came from a rich family, attended a private boy's school and eventually attended West Point. He had experience going after the Mexican bandit Pancho Villa, trained American troops and leaded from the front, not from a rear place of safety.

He became a leader of tank groups and even wrote manuals on the use of tanks. He fought in North Africa, took over cities that no one else could and helped raise the Phantom Army.

The book covers the incidents that got him in trouble with his superiors and what happened to him then. It also covers the way in which he died.

There is no doubt from the book that Patton was one of America's best generals ever. The book is a good tribute to a great man.

This book proves the point that if parents have high expectations of their children, those children will have high expectations of themselves.  George Patton outmaneuvered dyslexia (letters and numbers are seen transposed) and ADD (attention deficit disorder - very short attention span, high boredom rate, & often having erratic behavior) to become one of America's greatest fighting legends.  Those were significant problems in a day in which they were not yet diagnosed or even understood (people having them were thought to be stupid or lazy).

I learned a great deal about Patton from this book.  Like everyone else, I'd seen 'Patton' (the movie), but this book brought a more human side to this man.  I don't know how I feel about the inclusion of the possible attempted murder of Patton.  I guess, in the name of full disclosure, it needed to be included.  It is a very strange story.  Unfortunately, it is not out of the realm of possibility.  This was a very readable, interesting story of an amazing military leader.

This is a 3 hour audiobook, so there’s a lot they needed to cut out, yet the author spent too much time suggesting that Patton was murdered, and also about his wife, Bee, when she sighed, put her hair behind her ear, sat on the bed cuz she was tired from packing…blah, blah, blah. Really?

This is a gripping book that covers the life of George Patton in sufficient detail to keep you interested without swamping you in minutia. I found it both informative and engrossing!
