The Bride #1

Claimed Bride

Rate this book
In Claimed Bride, Book 1, we meet billionaire Alexander Sinclair who might have done the wrong thing to claim the delectable Penelope Winters as his bride.

Penelope was not having a good week.

First her newly minted ‘Ex’husband (she was going to get a t-shirt made) decided to drive off into the sunset (literally) and left her in a pile of shit (figuratively). She’d barely put some dirt on it (actually), when the most gorgeous man on planet Earth showed up and opened his stupid mouth. Alexander Sinclair—billionaire extraordinaire, real estate mogul, one part of Rogues of Manhattan trio, and all parts wrong for her!

“I need a wife . . . and I don’t do pretend, Penelope.”

Alex was not having a good week (either).

First, his star employee took millions of investors’ money to his grave, leaving Alex to deal with a bloody mess. It got worse (liar!) when he went hunting for the wicked Mrs. Carver, but found a delicious little fire-cracker instead. Alex took one look at Penny and bid adieu to his brain (the one in his head at any rate!). How else could he explain his insane attraction for this sinfully-sexy-potentially-deceptive-caveman-invoking woman?

Sparks fly as the Penny and Alex clash in a battle of wills . . . and tangle of limbs (you’ll see). But the Houdini embezzler is still at large and Alex will stop at nothing to keep Penny safe in his arms . . . as his claimed bride.

Editor’s Note: Bring out the #PornCoc. Your week just got better!

Author pseudonyms - Isabel James, Kimila Taylor

“Isn’t it a universal truth that it’s our singular experiences and passion, for whatever thing or things, which molds us all into the individuals we become? Whether it's hidden in the depths of our soul or exposed for all to see?”

Linzi Basset is a South African born animal rights supporter with a poet’s heart, and she is also a bestselling fiction writer of suspense filled romance erotica books; who as the latter, refuses to be bound to any one sub-genre. She prefers instead to stretch herself as a storyteller which has resulted in her researching and writing historical and even paranormal themed works.

Her initial offering: Club Alpha Cove, a BDSM club suspense series released back in 2015, reached Amazon’s Bestseller list, and she has been on those lists ever since. Labeling her as prolific is a gross understatement as just a few short years later she has now been published over a hundred times.

“I write from the inside out. My stories are both inside me and a part of me so it can be either pleasurable to release them or painful to carve them out. I live every moment of every story I write. So, if you're looking for spicy and suspenseful, I'm your girl... woman... writer... you know what I mean!"

Linzi believes that by telling stories in her own voice, she can better share with her readers the essence of her being: her passionate nature; her motivations; and her wildest fantasies. She feels every touch as she writes, every kiss, every harsh word uttered, and this to her is the key to a never-ending love of writing.

Ultimately, all books by Linzi Basset are about passion. To her, passion is the driving force of all emotion; whether it be lust, desire, hate, trust, or love. This is the underlying message contained in her books.

Her advice: “Believe in the passions driving your desires; live them; enjoy them; and allow them to bring you happiness.”

”With you, life suddenly seems full of endless possibilities.”

Characters
Alexander (36, chairman and majority stakeholder in the Allied Group):
Alex is head of a global property development firm he founded when he was 25. "According to Forbes magazine, Alex had a net worth of $5.5 billion. Alex was a philanthropist and a sports team owner too. He had recently bought a large stake in the NY Giants and the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. His generous donations and support to various welfare organizations had made him a sought-after businessman.”

Alex has incredible self-control and usually doesn't let emotion guide his choices.

Alex’s father left when he was 9 and his heartbroken mother passed away when he was 14. At that point he decided love was an emotion he couldn’t place any trust in.
“I was fourteen when I stood next to her grave and felt nothing but relief that she was gone. I loved my mother, dearly, but since he left, I had to fulfill the role of the adult in the house. She had become a living ghost. She was suffering in a hell of her own making. As I watched her coffin lower into the ground, I swore that I would never allow my heart to be ruled by emotion—any emotion—least of all love.”

“He didn’t believe in love and he didn’t trust easily, not after watching his mother suffer.”

Penelope (owner of GenZ Designs - she's a children's clothes designer):
Penny's husband (Drew) was killed in a car accident. He worked for Alex's company and embezzled a ton of money. Before Drew died he implicated Penny in the theft.

Penny, however, has a different side to the story.

Penny's parents died in a boating accident when she was 8 and she was raised by her grandmother. Drew knew that Penny's dying grandma was loaded, so he quickly married her thinking he would get half the inheritance. When Penny refused, Drew "turned into a greedy, uncaring and selfish man overnight. He’d finally admitted why he’d pursued and married her, when she refused to part with her inheritance."

So Penny severed ties with Drew, but he didn't give up easily.
“Her ex-husband, who she hadn’t seen in over six months—ever since she’d obtained a restraining order against him. Their two-year marriage had been over for eighteen months already. The same amount of time they had been separated. She’d filed for divorce the day she’d realized what a scam artist he was, but he had refused to sign the papers” . Two weeks before he died, Drew finally signed the divorce papers.

Unfortunately Drew's words and actions killed Penny's spirit. He told her she was worthless and she began to believe those words and she lost her self-confidence. Since her parents died, Penny had always been careful with her heart, so it was a big deal that Drew was able to tear down her barriers. She wasn't going to be so willing to trust again.

The Story:
Penny's husband (Drew) was killed in a car accident. He worked for Alex's company as a top-level project manager and embezzled millions. Before Drew died he claimed that Penny was the mastermind behind his fraudulent scheme.

Now that Drew is dead, Alex needs to address the issue of the $50M embezzlement as well as redistribute all of Drew's projects. For one project he realizes that unless he can produce a family quickly he's going to lose the large Chinese deal.
“Family is inherently important to Zhang Wei Chén. He wouldn’t think twice before tearing up that contract if he doesn’t like Drew’s replacement.”

Enter Penny. Seeing as her husband owes the company, Alex is going to make sure that Penelope pays that debt by agreeing to become his wife to appease the Chinese client.

Now that Drew is dead, Penny might be in danger from the real culprits, so Alex insists she move in with him. Once she’s there, he drops the marriage bomb on her. 💣 👰🏻
You want to marry me?”
Alex shrugged. “Two flies with one swat, luv. Marrying me would prove that you are willing to do what you can to get to the bottom of Drew’s embezzlement and help me to fix the fuckup he left behind.”

My Thoughts:
After what Penny went through with Drew, her walls were up and she didn’t trust easily. But along comes Alex and within a short time she falls in love with him. Hmm 🤔 . That was a little hard to buy into given Penny’s history and how her husband duped her.

This is insta-lust and insta-love. Within a few weeks they are married and Penny knows she loves Alex. Penny asked Alex if their sham marriage would be real or pretend and he said he didn’t do pretend. But then during their marriage it seemed like he kept thinking it was only temporary. Maybe my definition of “not pretend” is skewed, but I thought he meant he was really going to give the marriage a try. So I got a bit confused when it didn’t seem like he was in it for the long haul..

We find out early who is really involved in the embezzlement. They are determined to get the money so the ending was a bit predictable.

There is some definite chemistry between Alex and Penny. Like I mentioned above, this is insta-lust and their attraction was strong. This chemistry leads to some pretty steamy bedroom scenes. 🔥 Although, there were a couple cheesy lines that had me laughing....😁
”He caught her hand in his when it ambled toward his throbbing, tumescent tool.”

“He found the treasure between her legs; pleased that her labia were already soaked in honeyed juices.”
😂

Overall, this is a short story (a little over 100 pages) so the amount of character depth is a bit limited. The supporting characters bring an additional layer to the story. I liked them and am interested to read how the other two “Rogues of Manhattan” fall in love. The story was well paced and I didn’t get bored. There were a few grammatical and editing errors, but nothing significant. Also, there were a few times where I scratched my head and thought...hmmm that doesn’t seem plausible or doesn’t support what I read a few chapters ago. But on the whole, this kept my interest.

- POV: within the chapters themselves you get different people’s thoughts.
- H likable? Yes
- h likable? Yes
- h virgin? No
- First time they kiss: 26%
- First time they sleep together: 50%
- OW/OM drama? No
- H/h cheat? No
- Steamy? Yes
- Did I skip pages? No
- Big secrets? No
- Did I cry? No
- Cliffhanger? No
- How it ends: It has a HEA and an epilogue

Quotes
“Penny jerked her eyes back to his face from where her gaze had inadvertently gravitated toward the slight bulge in his pants. Her cheeks bloomed; caught staring at his crown jewels.”

“I’m dying to see this gorgeous specimen who managed to defrost your ovaries.”

“From the agonized expression on your face, I’m guessing that your Mr. Sinclair hasn’t satisfied your back-from-dead ovaries yet.”

“Humans have an infinite capacity to love, Penny. Circumstances may make you question your feelings, but you should be open to possibilities.”

“the real beauty of life lies in the fact that it’s unpredictable. The world evolves every day, bringing with it something new.”

*Sigh*

The writing was clunky and all over the place. It flowed smoothly in some areas and really struggled in others. The conversations were juvenile and repetitive. Some of the parts that really stuck out to me were when the h was having a conversation with her friend, they would each repeatedly use the other's names to address each other; it kept pulling me out of the story. No one talks like that. On top of that the H must have used like six different pet names, and none if them came off naturally. There were also portions of dialogue that came off too flowery prose to go with the rest of the story which added to the overall feeling of all over the place.

The plot used as the necessity of her marrying him wasnt resolved and the reason for her to live with him in the first place wasnt really believable since the bad guy hadn't done anything to the h yet.

I couldnt decide if the author was trying for hot and raunchy, or soulful love destiny and if she was trying for both, didnt really manage to completely blend it throughout the whole story.

This was book 1 of 4, and I'm not even sure I want to read the other three.

This one had a great storyline with a twisty plot, and I really got into it. Intrigue, suspense, and embezzlement at her X dead husband's workplace, and it all pointed to Penelope as the mastermind. Oh hell no, she was not taking this sittin' down, at all. What she didn't plan on, was falling for one of the owners of said workplace. She was all spitting kitty, and only Alexander Sinclair could calm her down. Too bad listening at doors is always the wrong thing to do, and they still have an accomplice to catch. Something Penelope should've heeded better. Of course Alexander should have admitted exactly what her role was in all this, except he wasn't really sure either anymore. He didn't do love, so he kept sayin'.
Explosive chemistry, action, and angst throughout for me and I loved reading it.

When I learned that Linzi Basset had a new series all about brides, I was totally in!
Claimed Bride was the October 2018 Featured Book in the Sizzling HOT Romance Book Club on Facebook, and let me tell you, I loved it!

When Penelope Winters' ex-husband turns up dead, he appears to have embezzled a lot of money from his employer, Alexander Sinclaire. And it looks like Penelope was in on the crime. Sinclaire has a plan for getting his money back and Penny is the key. Too bad the real criminal is still out there.

Claimed Bride is HOT, as anybody would expect from Linzi Basset. It's also smart, suspenseful, and ultimately heart-warming. I'm on to Captured Bride, the next in the series.

Don't miss Claimed Bride. FIVE HUGE STARS!

Alex Sinclair is a billionaire who is a major stakeholder in the Allied Group, a global property firm. He also was a sports team owner among a few other organizations. Drew Carver was an employee who embezzled money and then set up his ex wife to take the fall.
Penny found out that Drew was only out for her money, so she divorced him. Only to find out that Drew stole money and disappeared with fifty million dollars. Now Alex was looking at Penny to see if she was involved.
Alex believed she wasn’t involved, and he wanted to be sure she would be safe so he used his charm on Penny. To help with the deals he had going on, he realized he needed a wife. Alex told Penny “ I need a wife...and I don’t do pretend”. Sparks fly between the two. Their chemistry was hot, and Alex was determined to make her his wife.
I enjoyed the book.

Meet Alexander Sinclair a property mogel a shareholder in a global company. A staff member has died thoughts has stolen a significant amount of money. It is believed that the wife of deceased Drew is aware of what had gone on and they want their money back. Penelope Carved is actually the ex wife of Drew and They had been separated for awhile before the divorce was finalised. Her & Alex meet at Drew's funeral a d there is an instant attraction from both parties.
This leads to some hot scenes between the pair but as with Linzi's books there are twists and turns weaved through out. This is a fantastic opening into another great series and I cannot wait to see what come next, loved it

Feelings
The Bride Series starts off with a major BANG! Penelope has no way of knowing that her ex husband has stolen $50 million from the company that he works at. Everyone thinks that Penelope is the accomplice. Alex, Blake and Mark may be best friends but they are determined to figure this riddle out. Alex is mesmerized by Penelope when he first meets her but can he truly believe that she’s innocent? Tales of intrigue and tears for way too many reasons are going to keep you on your toes while reading this story. I can’t wait to follow Alex the entrepreneur, Blake the bad boy best friend and Mark the hunky FBI Agent throughout the Bride Series. Is the Trifecta about to fall?

Boy is this hot! I loved this story of Penny and Alex. Although Alex gets Penny to marry him, he is planning on the marriage to be a temporary thing but, plans can change in an instant. The situations and hot steamy sex and mutual attraction keeps this story going but the suspense of the millions of dollars in investor money that was embezzled by Penny's ex keeps the tension up. Temporary marriage was the plan but circumstances can change everything in the heat of the moment with this sexy match. Another five star winning read from Linzi Basset!

More than just a marriage!

Let me start off by saying I thoroughly enjoyed this story of lust and love! Alex never wanted to get married but when something happens that warrants it, that’s where Penelope cones in. She was already in one disastrous marriage and didn’t want another. But after meeting Alex, he can be very persuasive. These two have sizzling chemistry and you just know they belong together. But can they both overcome feelings from the past? I really loved this story and can’t wait to read the next!!!

An enchanting billionaire suspense romance

When I first started to read this book, I distrusted Alex as a cocky bastard who would no doubt destroy poor Penelope after her failed marriage to a rotten greedy manipulator. But as time passed and Alex evolved, I saw in him the exact things I found in my beloved second husband, a complicated, wounded man who didn't recognize love easily. The trauma they endure is heartbreaking but eventually they get their happily ever after. So inspiring.

Realizing she is now in danger Alex decides she will be staying with him for her safety but one of his clients wants a family man and to save the business he asked her to marry him. Alex refuses to feel anything for Penelope and she vowed never to give her heart away but someone wanting to kill her has a way of changing your mind. I really enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to more of the series.

I am drawn to the words of this author. There is just something about her stories that books me and keeps me wanting to get to the end to see what the outcome will be.

I started with the Cove series and I don't see myself ever stopping from being a fan. Looking forward to the next in this series.

Scam

Easy fun read. I think making Penny is too trusting and forgiving kind of goes against the start of the book when her walls were up because of her ex husband. It just didn't click. But hey, that's my opinion. You have to read the story and we can compare reviews.

Book was well written and edited.

a marriage of convenience I guess you would call it

There’s was a marriage of convenience so as to speak but it didn’t take long for emotions to come to play. Some expected some not.

Quite a ride this book was. With a dash of suspense and danger to keep you on your toes. Their chemistry was great, her quirks cute and I loved her best friend.

I liked the premise and I like other Linzi Basset books but this was not for me. It's really kills my enjoyment of spicy scenes when I read tumescent/tumescence, etc. If you need to Google words to know what they mean, it's not fun. And there's so many other fabulous words that could be used instead. So I'd recommend her other stuff. But not this.

A new and very enjoyable series

I love this woman's books! This series is different from the others that I have read but that is not a bad thing. It's always fun when a favorite author goes in a slightly different direction. But her prose, characters, plotting is superb.

I don't normally read "millionaire" stories, but the blurb on this one really made me wonder. I loved the snark, and the romance of the story. A bit of "who done it" mixed in made it a fast read. The characters were strong, and it makes you want to go on to the next.
