This book is really useful for basic vocabulary acquisition and also understanding Japanese sentence structure. What makes it unique is that it organizes its sentences in way where you only have one unknown word in every sentence and that really makes the language more comprehensible for beginners like me.
Don't really know how to rate this. It's a vocabulary book and it does what it's suppose to but I don't think it's useful to buy? Reading a list of vocabulary words is never really a way to learn vocabulary (I know people LOVE anki but it's a a waste of time for me personally) and I don't think this book is for learning. It's more of a reference than anything.
I say this because they introduce vocabulary words without really explaining anything. For example they introduce あなた ('you') without telling you that in Japanese 'you' is usually omitted and, for the most part, should be avoided as it's not even very polite to say. Likewise, they introduce はじめまして but define it as simply 'hello' when it's use is formal and specific -- at a time when you meet someone for the first time and are doing introductions.
Each vocabulary word does have an example sentence which is amazing, but I don't think that makes it any more useful. This book is simply too out of context to be practical. It's like looking through an English vocabulary book that looks like this:
Apple - I ate an apple. Store - The store is there. Cute - Ken is cute.
Like...yeah, those are sentences, but does it help with anything that you can read these sentences lol?
Not useful for me but I guess if you have a solid vocabulary already and you want to do the JLPT, you can skim through it and hope this book is thorough enough to cover the necessary vocabulary to pass the exam.
But keep in mind the number on the cover of this book (1000 in this case) is NOT reflective of the amount of vocabulary found within this book.
One step closer to becoming 上手 A great vocab book, with clear sample sentences and grammar structures that one can breeze through on its own without any needed supplementary material, though any that one may find will definitely enhance the learning experience.
