WARNING: Don't read before you go to sleep
Apparently I woke my husband up last night yelling out, "Help me!" in my sleep. Yep, the Scutters were chasing me and I was cornered against a rock wall in a mine shaft, and then they were covering my back and dragging me down.....
Even in the third installment of her genre mash-up Earth Resistance series, Theresa Beachman is still managing to amp up the horror aspect. New bugs. New ways to terrorize humans. Creepy settings. And then there is weird, reclusive, mysterious, downright mean - yet eternally good-looking - Darr. We met Darr in book two, but then he disappeared and was presumed dead. Luckily his demise was misadvertised, because he saves the lovely Violet in dramatic fashion.
I'm not quite sure why I am enjoying these books so much, but maybe it is because there are a lot of explosions, strangely intelligent insect aliens, vicious bad guys, and wonderfully humane good guys (and gals). While book two was fairly reminiscent of book one, this book takes a few dips and turns, and most of the plot is in the destroyed remnants of London rather than in the relative safety of the military bunker that shelters the humans. Darr, too, is a big surprise. In many ways, he is more of the catalyst to the story than Violet, and this is a gender switch from the previous two books, where I would say the female leads were the main protagonists. Don't get me wrong, Violet is formidable. And she saves the day more than once, but the surprises and suspense are coming from Darr's character. His secrets have secrets.
For a couple of chapters about 2/3 of the way into the book, everything kind of lagged for me even though Violet and Darr might be my favorite Earth Resistance couple so far. Did I nod off? Maybe. But then I powered through to see how, when and IF Darr was up to the task.
Why, oh why wasn't I dreaming about a sexy librarian pulling books off of shelves instead of Scutters pulling me into the abyss? And if that Easter egg doesn't make you want to pick up this book, I don't know what will.
