Benny's life isn't exactly exciting. He tattoos, he goes home, he considers a latte an unexpected treat. And he's fine with predictability. He's worked hard for a simple life—so what if he gets lonely? So the absolute last thing he is expecting is to get attacked on his drive home....by an inter-dimensional monster, no less.
Suddenly, Benny finds himself chasing the otherworldly beast and seriously crushing on the dark, rugged stranger who hunts it. But this can't be real. Benny has to be imagining it all.
Other dimensions don't exist.

An atmospheric short story featuring a lonely tattoo artist who has the doors of his world blown open, figuratively and literally, by the arrival of interdimensional monsters and the warrior whose life mission is to hunt them.

I discovered Cal Matthews through her first novel, The Dead, and I'm in awe of her talent. It's obvious to me that she's had this short story copy-edited, for which I praise all the deities of self-publishing, hallelujah and amen. Up until now it's been brutal to read writing so good that's so riddled with typos. Respect your work, authors! Don't treat it like garbage! I'm delighted she's now taking herself seriously enough to get the editing assistance she needed.

The story has almost a fairy-tale vibe to it, as Benny's quiet existence gets upended by the comings and goings of vibrant, larger-than-life Captain Kit Hurley. Amidst the inevitable violence and gore of monster hunting, there's a sweet hopefulness that shines through for the star-crossed -- make that dimension-crossed -- would-be lovers. But Benny never truly understands why Kit is attracted to him, and that meant I never truly understood it either. Being allowed insight into Kit would have strengthened the story for me.

At any rate, I'm glad to see something new from this author, and from a purely selfish point of view I hope she has a long and prosperous career.

Aw, that was a lovely shortie!

After an almost three week reading break this was exactly what I needed :)

Doors is short, sweet and I really dug Kit and Benny ♥️
Their interactions were heartwarming!

I loved the opening, how Benny stumbles upon a dead woman on a deserted road, and then encounters an otherworldly beast ready to pounce on him! Exciting!

The story continues rather sweet and romantic, as Benny meets his rescuer Kit, a soldier who has been serving the stewards since his thirteenth birthday, hunting down outer-beasts across the dimensions!

Doors has enough backstory to be satisfying, but as with all short stories, I so wish it was longer! I think it has a lot of potential (for a novel) and I'd love to return to Benny's world and discover other dimensions with him and Kit.

I adored this author’s Thaumaturge series and have been patiently waiting for the next book in the series. While I mostly enjoyed this short story, which was well written and edited, it won’t be particularly memorable and I hate saying that! Matthews is a really talented author and I know I’ll be ecstatic when she gets back to her fascinating urban fantasy series.

2.5* It's ok, has great potential. Problem with it being a short story is there's little depth they keep meeting then are in love, and I never felt it. Attraction maybe, but love?
The dimmensions are safely elsewhere and we don't see them so they remain the tease of a larger off-page world. It wasn't quite what I was expecting and I kept wanting that bit more from it.
