After my mother’s return, I understand that she is responsible for the strange attacks that have taken place ever since I became embroiled in the magical world. My grandparents think they can save her, but I’m not as certain.
When she summons those with power to her cell, I’m the only one who sees the danger in agreeing to her terms.
Dragged deeper into the magical world, I find that there is a greater plot afoot than only my mother. Someone has been guiding and teaching her, granting her access to power that no mage should have. Understanding who that is will take me to a place I never wanted to go—the other side of the Veil.
In order to end the attacks on the Veil and survive, I need to understand just what I am, but the power that I’ve avoided my entire life until now just might destroy me first.
SA Magnusson lives in Minneapolis and writes urban fantasy and scifi. As a practicing physician, SA wanted to mix medicine with a love for fantasy fiction, particularly urban fantasy, creating what one reader described as ER meets the Dresden Files.
This book was huge for Katie. She found out so much about herself and her mother, most of it not good. However Katie managed to step up and do the hard things and still keep herself at her core. By the end of the book it seemed like Katie was more at home in her skin despite what she learned. Always a good thing.
I'm slightly conflicted over this book, I so loved the first few in the series and thought there was massive potential. Sadly instead of getting better, the typos got worse, the story continuity wavered and I was left constantly frustrated by the vague answering of questions. If I am supposed to be left wondering and wanting the next book then it went amiss, I was frustrated and annoyed. Characters were inconsistent and I struggled to make sense of the world and magic. I really like the whole mixing of magic and medicine but I just don't see how it was ever going to. I managed to finish this book but there will be no more for me.
This series ends with an epic big battle that spans much of the book and to different worlds. A series this long deserves a massive end. I've been disappointed in some series that build up to this big final confrontation and it isn't that long or massive.
Kate is finally more at home with blending her magic and medicine but isn't all the way there. I like that because nobody has all the answers immediately. It takes time to blend different areas of your life.
Some things are unresolved and may be expected to be covered in the next two series. I actually read the Hedgemage and magic first so I was disappointed not to see the gap of what happens to Kate in that time a better explored.
I have patiently read everyone of these books, even though the lack of real answers were frustrating. Now to finally get to the end and there's even more questions! Who the heck is her father?! It's not clear enough! Was it an entity as opposed to a real person or what?! Was she made by magic? I feel like I've wasted so much of my time reading this series. I will not be recommending this to anyone. It makes my head hurts 😐
What an amazing series. I can't believe I have finished it. All I can hope for is another book to be added to these as I did feel I wanted to find out more about everyone and what happens next. Whether there will be more in the future, I can hope.
An amazing series written by a great writer. Have now downloaded the authors next series.
This is a really good series I enjoyed seeing the characters develop and the progression of the stories it captures the imagination and prepares you for the next set of series
Book Six is the conclusion of Kate's story. I think that the author did a good job of wrapping up the loose ends and actually has a happy ending. This series is a good read, and I recommend it if you're looking for something a little different.
This final book in the Medicine and Magic series was very convoluted. It has a difficult plot and attempted to solve too many questions all in a somewhat confusing night. I found it a most unsatisfying conclusion to this series.
