Forbidden Men #10

The Price of Mason

Rate this book
I might’ve ruined any chance I ever had at a meaningful relationship when I decided to become a male prostitute at eighteen, but that was okay.

I paid off my mom’s debt, the rent, my sister’s hospital bills. I put food on the table and kept eviction notices at bay.

It was worth it.

But was it worth the price of my soul?

Two years later, this job has begun to kill me in every way but physically, until SHE comes along.

Reese is the breath of fresh air I need. She makes me smile, she makes me laugh, she makes me want more. But how can we ever be together after all the choices I’ve made?

Listing one mistake after another, these are my confessions and how we came through to the other side.

***

The Forbidden Men series concludes with THE PRICE OF MASON by looping back to the beginning and retelling PRICE OF A KISS through his eyes.

Just when you thought you knew everything, here’s the rest of the story.

WARNING: Not a safe book (because yeah, the dude's a prostitute) but also not the most taboo thing ever published. Some explicit content. -- Yes, it CAN be read as a standalone!

Wow...this was a much harder read than I expected. The first book in this series, made me angry but that's nothing compared to how pissed off this one made me feel. It's a good thing I knew how it was gonna end, otherwise, I might have thrown in the towel... I felt so sorry for Mason...

4 STARS

I had been delaying this book because I knew it would hurt... I knew it would hurt more than Book 1.

Book 1 in this awesome series is Reese and Mason's story. It is told from Reese's point of view. This 10th book finishes the cycle by turning back to the start and retells Reese and Mason's story from Mason's point of view.

As Mason was a male prostitute, I knew his point of view would be harsher and it really felt like a bitter pill to swallow. But like in Book 1, Reese, who is one of my all-times favorite female characters, makes everything bearable.

I just wish there weren't 2 books about the same story, but one long book from dual point of view. This one really felt too much like a repetition and both Book 1 and Book 2 fail to reflect the other party's feelings because both of them are written from 1st person point of view. I wish the writer hadn't chosen this way. Still, they are books worth reading.

This series is awesome and I would recommend most of them. (I only hated Book 4.)

Safety:

Book 1 and Book 10 are not for everyone because of the hero's condition as a male prostitute. I hated that he was a male prostitute and had a hard time dealing with it. The redeeming part of it is the fact that he didn't want to do it, he just found himself being forced to do it to protect and care for his family. The way he feels dirty and not worthy of Reese is heartbreaking. Still, if you enjoy safe reads, this is one you should avoid.

In this Book 10, there are explicit sex scenes with the women who hire him and they really really hurt but I think the writer thought it was necessary to put them there so that we could understand what he felt during those sessions. Yet, it is hard to read them, so be forewarned. In Book 1, because it was told from Reese's point of view, you don't read any sex scenes with other women but because this one is from Mason's point of view, you do. That is the worst part of this book.

Writing:

The writing is flawless and it makes you feel.

As I said before, it is written from first person point of view.

The book is 521 pages but "The Price of Mason" ends on page 400 and the rest of it are very short novellas about the descendants of the Forbidden Men heroes and heroines. I didn't like those short novellas, at all! I wish the writer had written full complete books about those descendants. These are even too short to be called novellas!

Recommendation:

If you want to read Reese and Mason's story, I would recommend you to read Book 1 instead of Book 10 because they are the same story told by different people and Book 1 is sweeter, more dreamy, more fun and easier to read whereas Book 10 has a more depressed tone and it is definitely a harder read with the hero's very detailed sex scenes with the other women who paid him for sex.

Here's my review for Book 1:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

If you want to read this series, I would like to say that my favorites are Book 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Book 3 is OK but I really hated Book 4.

Rating:

As the tone of this book isn't as happy and fun as Book 1 and as it has parts that are hard to read, I didn't enjoy it as much as Book 1. Also, I hate repetitions so this was basically the same story and I didn't need a more depressing version of that sweet love story. Hence, my lower rating.

Some QUOTES from The Price of Mason

God! I don’t know how to get past this. I don’t deserve her forgiveness. I don’t… How the hell do I touch something so pure and amazing when I’m so fucking filthy?”

***

The lack of freedom bothered me the most, and that collar had felt like a great big bitch slap, reminding me I was nothing. A filthy, worthless man-whore, bound by the cash of the rich and depraved.

I wanted out. I wanted out of this life so bad. And trust me, I knew what kind of fucked-up, ironic mess that made me. I strove to do my best at something I hated and craved to stop. It made no sense. I could easily end all this by messing up one session with one client badly enough that none of the others would even want to call for me again. But whenever the idea tempted me, the next thought I had of losing all that extra income would send me into a panic, and I found myself continuing to be the best I could so they’d keep asking for me.
This was my life in a nutshell. I constantly felt pulled in two directions—feeling the need to do it and do it well in order to protect the ones I loved most, all the while, just wanting to escape so I could save my own soul.

***

“ What? Why can’t you ever have me?”
“Because ,” I sputtered. “We just went over this. I could never deserve you. You’re too good for me. You’re out of my reach. You’re… You’re Reese Randall.”
“You’re wrong.” She shook her head adamantly. “I’m not. All you have to do is stretch out your hand, Mason.” She patted the center of her chest. “I’m right here.”
Oh, God. I wanted to. I wanted to so bad. But… “I can’t. I’m tainted.”

***

“Just because you had some misguided notion when you were eighteen, thinking you had to do something drastic and unnecessary to save your family, doesn’t mean you deserve to be treated with such constant degradation by every woman who crosses your path.”

***

“Can I touch you?” she asked.
Grinning, I closed my eyes and tipped my face toward the ceiling in an effort to contain my joy, because it felt too big, like I didn’t deserve to be this happy. “You don’t have to ask.” Everything on me belonged to her.
When nothing happened, I opened my eyes to find her face full of worry and hesitation. Dread bloomed. “What’s wrong?”
She shook her head, looking dazed. “I just… I don’t know where to start.”
Oh, damn. How was it possible that I could love this girl any more than I already did?
Taking her hand, I pressed her palm flush against my heartbeat. “Start here. No one’s ever touched me here before.”

***

“You’re the warm sun that shines when everything else is dark. A smile and a hug in a roomful of disapproval. You’re…” I cringed knowing I shouldn’t touch her even as I pressed my brow to hers. “You’re everything .”

A tear slipped down her cheek. Then she blurted out a nervous laugh. “I love you, too.”

***

“Never stop loving me.”

“Teresa,” I murmured, saying her real name so she’d know I meant every word I said. “You’re in my blood. I’d have to bleed out completely and die before I could give you up. I’m not going to stop loving you.”

The Price of Mason
Mason's POV from Price of a Kiss

Finally we get to have Mason's POV. Mason & Reese is one of my favorite couples in the series. Its just that I probably expected too much from this book. I was really hoping that we get to have something new from Mason's perspective and those times that he was not with Reese will be featured as well. All in all it was really nice having Mason's POV. After reading all the books in the series it felt like a full circle especially with the extra treats at the end of the book.

The Price of Mason de Linda Kage libro 10 serie Forbidden men

giphy_(1)

giphy_(8)

Muchas Gracias LK!!!

Spoilers ahead

For some reason I thought this book was an extended epilogue for the entire series( apparently I didn't read the blurb) so I was surprised to basically read book 1 through Mason's eyes which wasn't what I wanted or expected

*I did not read book 1
*I actually admired Mason, he was willing to do anything to provide for his family especially his sister who he clearly loved. He didn't enjoy the job but he knew he had to get it done
*As much as I admire him I didn't quite like Mason however, he just came across as weak in his dealings with Mrs. Garrison. It just went on and on and on like she was the devil himself and just made me grow bored
*Kudos to the author for saying the book wasn't safe(which I noticed AFTER reading the book)

All in all this wasn't my cuppa so I'm not going to rate it

****The ending scenes with the next generation was worthy of 5 stars! I'd so love to see these kids get their own stories though some seemed to be wrapped up already. Nevertheless I'm here for more from this author, there were books in the Forbidden series that didn't quite work for me but it also held some of my favorite books and mcs I've read in a while (Pick oh how I love you! You too manwhore Brandt and Asher and Sarah and Eva and....yeah I won't be forgetting this series anytime soon)

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. Review and excerpt can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

Back in 2014 I had just started discovering my way through Goodreads and the NA oriented books. Now the site kept recommending to me "Price of a Kiss" by Linda Kage and finally, I bought it.
And then I fell in love.

For four years I have been a fan of this series with its heartfelt messages, amazing, funny, emotional characters and lots of humorous scenes. Seeing that the book centers around Mason truly gives to the series the feeling that we come in a full circle back to the beginning and back to Reese and Mason. I enjoyed Mason's POV, which took leaps in the time of the book and how he fell in love with Reese from his own POV.

The best part was that close to the ending he had a scene with Ten and I was giggling remembering how Ten feel in love later in the series. Oh, and there is a surprise after the book's end too!

Linda Kage has created an unforgettable cast of characters who will stay with you even after the end of the book.

And I am still reeling over the fact that many of my favorite series have ended in 2019! Recommended and also if this is your first time seeing this book, I implore you to read all the series!

The Price of Mason is the last book in the Forbidden Men series. But I will say that if you are new to the series, read this one with the first book together! I do wish that this one had been written when I had originally read the first book. I am personally not a fan of reading other POV's, years after the original book was published. So I mostly skimmed through this one, as this is one of the more painful books of the series, although I love Mason and Reese. I do think that if you love reading other POV's from books you enjoy, then this will definitely work better for you than it did for me if I am being honest. But I wanted to finish the series off fully so I did read this one. I was hoping it would have more in the HEA of where they are at in present, but oh well.

Overall a likeable installment that was interesting to get back to the first book.

2.75 stars for the book and the rest for the little novellas

The story of Mason :
I remember vaguely the first book but i know it had a huge impact on me. So when i started this book i had a hard time assimiling this Mason with the one i remembered... the voice felt a bit wrong... and some of the things happening confused me because i could swear that's not what i actually remembered. So yeah it was hard getting into the story and what Mason went through made me very uneasy and really sad and angry for him. Yet the banter and attraction between him and Reese was especially good. And i think that's what saved the story IMO.

The little novellas were fun and i really liked the one with JB and Teagan but it was too short !!! having a glimpse of the all gang was a plus too !!

The teasing about "The revenge plan" was good... i wasn't actually convinced at first then i got into it and now i'd love to read more even if i kinda know exactly where it's going to go.

Obviously my stalking skills need some work because somehow Linda managed to publish this book without me obsessing over it for the 3 months leading up to it. And that almost feels like I received an unexpected gift. I opened up GoodReads one day and there it was.

So naturally I one clicked it but between kids and birthdays and Christmas it took me way too long to get to read it. I also was maybe a little unsure if I could handle it. Getting a whole book from the alternate POV is super hit and miss for me. And I loved my forbidden men so much and Mason's story was hard to hear from Reese's POV. So much could crush me here.

But big girl panties were securely pulled up and I remembered that Linda had never let me down and in I went. Only to try talk books to my hubby and strangers in the checkout line and the dog every time I got dragged away from my book.

Mason was just as amazing from his POV as he was from Reese's. And I think it helped that it's been so long since I read Price of a Kiss that I wasn't mentally comparing the storyline I was just remembering a first love.

The novellas at the end were an amazing touch and I am going to up my stalking game to get my grabby hands on The Revenge Plan because that teaser has me dying for more. And although I didn't think the forbidden men series needed it this book did complete the circle so beautifully I am glad I read it. But now I might have to try find time for a reread because remembering Tinker bell and Ten and Sarah and everyone else falling in love has made me want to re-experience it again.

I liked this book, but there could have been more side characters.

I liked seeing their story from Mason’s POV, and it definitely made you understand him more because you see a lot of the things he goes through in this book. Reese was hilarious so even though there were tough topics in this book, there were also plenty of opportunities to laugh.

I really didn’t like Mason’s mother as she knew exactly what he was doing and didn’t discourage him or thank him, and just acted like he didn’t exist unless she wanted money.

I wanted to see more likeable side characters as there were only horrible ones, apart from Sarah who wasn’t shown much. I forgot the details of the first book so I mistakenly thought that the guys from the club would be shown, but Mason only meets them in the last chapter.

I loved all but one of the short stories at the end of this book. I didn’t really care about Rory’s story, but all the others were hilarious and I loved all the characters shown in them. I can’t wait to read The Revenge Plan.

Minor spoilers...Nothing new if you read
the original story

I read the original story back in 2013 when it first
came out and I really liked it. I must say though, it
was one of the first new adult books I read, so it
was really new and full of just the right amount of
angst I can tolerate. With that being said, I think
my perception of the story was clouded by the fact
that I was buying cheap kindle books and devouring
them nonstop. Maybe if I reread the story today it
would change the way I see it.

Mason was basically being sexually assaulted to support
his family, and his mother chose to turn the other way,
instead of helping her son and getting her shit together.
I just wanted to bitch slap the shit out of this
woman and force her to stay clean and be a real
mother. Also, why didn't Mason use his powers to
blackmail Monica and Patricia for basically using
him as a sex slave, was beyond my comprehension.

The first book wasn't as intense as this one
you never really get to see how severe and tragic
Mason's life really is. This book was a huge eye-
opener to the original story, and OMG, it's so
freaking tragic how much sexual abuse Mason
has suffered and is still suffering to help support
his dead beat mother and adorable sister. I skipped
most of his "sex scenes" with other women
because they were really sad. The fact that the
author alludes but does not come out and tell you
the horrible things he had to do for Patricia in
her bedroom, was just disturbing enough. I'm glad
he was able to find his happy ending and i feel
sad that he will forever feel like trash due to his
past.

4-4.5 stars. Mason and Reese are who started the series and now they are the end of the series. They are one of my favorite couples, too. It was fun to relive the time when they met through Mason's perspective. And wow, Mason sure had a lot that he hid from Reese. But I still loved how he took care of his sister. He tried to do the right thing and sometimes it backfired because he was between a rock and a hard place so I empathized with him. Thankfully I know how it all ends already and that Mason can finally be happy with the person of his choice.

** 1.5 Stars ⭐💫 **

It had TOO MUCH explicit description of sex with other women[/man]. And I do not think it makes ok for the hero to fantasize/picture the heroine while having sex with OW, still disgusting.

There was lots of new content but so much of ow drama and sex with them that I was extremely bothered.

There were a couple of things that did not make sense in Price of a Kiss and instead of clear up these little holes, Ms. Kage just completely omitted those parts or the explanations she gave were not entirely sufficient to elucidate them. It was not a seamless narrative.

To really know how many lies Mason told Reese and that he kept lying to her even when he was 'supposed' to be 'confessing the truth'. It was very disappointing.

If he did not have sex with Patricia, a.k.a Landlady from hell, when she blackmailed him as we all believed and he also let Reese believe in the first book, then why did he believed she was pregnant with his child in To Professor, with Love? The 'real situation' after explained here did not make sense. It was incoherent. I think Ms. Kage wanted to correct her huge mistake in book one but the damage was already done and it was irrevocable, this only made it worst.

Although it had [IMO] many incoherences, The Price of a Mason was the best second telling from the hero's POV book I have read. It had more new scenes and his inner thoughts. I just wished it was better executed.

Off Balance : ** 4.5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 **

Off Balance was cute, sweet and all the fluffiness that exists. Julian and Nia were soo freaking cute.

Once Upon a Canoe Trip : ** 2 Stars ⭐⭐ **

Once Upon a Canoe Trip was a huge clusterfuck that made no sense at all. JB (Jameson Blakeland) seemed an interesting character even with a brused ego after being cheated on. But Reagan, she was stupid. And the whole experiment with someone—his brother, not him—who looked like family to her and see if she developed feelings, it was completely absurd. And then the sudden realization that they were destined to each other was not believable at all.

Playing to Win : 3 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

Playing to Win was ok and cute but it could have been way better. It was too short.

The Revenge Plan : I am going to read the full length novel next.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMFG LOVE LOVE LOVE Everything that Linda Kage has written Fell in love with her stories when I came a crossed Price of a kiss then my heart grew with every Forbidden men book but Mason and Reese still held my heart captive so you can imagine when one of my favorite authors announced she was going to write about one of my favorite couples again ya total fan girl moment . The Price of Mason is the Price of a kiss in Masons point of view and let me tell you I had no idea I could fall for Mason even more but guess what I did . My heart just hurt for the hero even more with everything he went through then we get to learn things that happened behind the scenes and Oh my gosh I cheered for Mason when he stood up for him self . We also get to see more of Masons relationship with his sister you could really feel how much they cared about one another and were each others sunlight . This also made me want to re read the Harry Potter series because wow the way Linda puts into words and connects with the characters just wow mind blown . The bonus stories at the end just made my heart happy I need more please Mrs Kage you genius you . I can't wait to add this beauty to my bookshelf and add future books by the author in my kindle and bookshelf . I would suggest not reading this as a standalone I highly recommend that you get every one of the Forbidden men series as soon as possible and while you are at it get everyone of Linda Kages stories NOW you wont regret it just prepare yourself to be super busy binge reading awesomeness .

It feels like I have been waiting FOREVER for Mason's side of the story (five long years to be exact, but who's counting anyways because there have been some incredible stories in-between), so it only seems fitting that his and Reese's story would both begin and end the Forbidden Men series. In Price of a Kiss, we got her side of the story and in The Price of Mason we finally got his! I have to say that it was really interesting to see some of my most beloved scenes through his eyes because I have always wondered what was going through his mind in those moments. I'm sure I wasn't the only one wanting to know his deepest of secrets, both the bad and good.

While it truly pains me deeply to see this phenomenal series come to an end, I couldn't imagine a more perfect story to end with. Mason and Reese are the reason I fell in love with the series and kept coming back book after book. After spending five extraordinary years with these characters I feel as if I've become a part of their world and it's going to be so hard to let them go. Although I am hoping for many books featuring the next generation...aka...their children, but only time will surely tell.

Fans of the Forbidden Men series will find themselves hopelessly in love with this new side of Mason and Reese. Even though you don't technically have to read any of the previous books to enjoy this story, I can't help but recommend (no wait...I'm telling you) to read every single one of the books in order. Trust me when I say that you will NOT regret a single moment that you spend with the men of Forbidden!
