Malcolm Steadman will dial the suicide hotline in 90 days. A man drowning in his own mind. Also pancakes . Malcolm Steadman is a completely average everyman whose life goal is to fit in. This, of course, is too much to ask for. Especially considering that he is also prone to paralyzing panic attacks triggered by everything from burnt toast to boredom. Can he win out against the mundane? Can he face the absurd? Bleakly funny in all of the wrong places, Season One of the serial pits Malcolm against his worst his own eccentricities . Will Malcolm prevail against himself? …Well, you know what happens in 90 days…
This book delivers on all the promise of its title. The author has infused dry wit into Malcolm Steadman's detailed descriptions of how his days (and mind) unravelled. As a horror fan, I'm finding it unusually difficult to describe the book without giving spoilers.
It's a well-written book, but I’m not sure I can recommend it. It made me feel irritable, and not just because I'll need to buy the next book. It's stirred up a lot of my own angst. I must call the support line of my internet provider for help.
However, if you're contending with feelings of loneliness, futility, or hopelessness, you may find that comparing your own state of mind to Steadman's will give you some relief.
I’ve been a fan of Michael for a few months now. The life of Malcolm Steadman is what our life would be if we took our own existential curiosity a bit too far. Though, I can’t say it’s Malcolm’s fault entirely. We, in this “woke” world, are an easy target for existential dread. This book is a perfect blend of a laugh riot as well as deeply profound thoughts. Michael is definitely one of the best upcoming authors/artists of our generation. Once you take this book up, you won’t be able to put it down before finishing. One idea for Michael is to make this into a proper coffee table book. It would work great. Eagerly waiting for season 2!!!
This story became intriguing right from the very first tag line: Malcom Steadman will dial the suicide hotline in 90 days. There's no spoiler there, the author has already told you what to expect. The fun is finding out how Malcom Steadman got to that point...which is quite a journey indeed! I needed a break from reading heavy books, and wanted something lighthearted and really funny. This is that book. M.P. Fitzgerald makes breakfast just a little zanier with the possibilities that are out there when your mind is allowed to wander...sometimes it really doesn't come back.
If you like dark and bleak, this is the book for you. Well written and short (probably could be read in one sitting if one could force oneself to do so). Not really my cup of tea, but I will see if the sequel: oops NO SPOILERS I THINK this was an ARC (I have so many I am losing track) but in any case, this voluntary review is my own opinion.
