This is the most historically accurate romance book I've ever read. Beautifully written. This is the story of Robert the Bruce and his real life wife Elizabeth. I'd recommend this to those who like their historical romance more serious than fluffy.

I can't say I throughly enjoyed it though. There is so much betrayal, back stabbing, lies and plotting that I had a constant feeling of doom throughout. I was just waiting for someone to stick the knife in someone's back. My anxiety was through the roof!
Still a solid read though.

Outlaw King is the first book in the Renegade Scots series by Julie Johnstone, and what an amazing book it is.

From the very first pages, excitement abound, pages in which rightful heir to the throne Robert the Bruce meets Elizabeth de Burgh when she ends up amidst a battle between her father's and his men. He doesn't see her again until years later but in that time he has never forgotten her, nor she, him.

The battle to keep Edward from gaining control of his beloved Scotland sees Robert taking desperate measures. Subterfuge comes into play, he needs to make time for William Wallace's army to gather alongside his own men, and the only way to do that is to tell Edward that he is ready to take a knee before him. Wisely Edward accepts this to be true but puts a plan into action to ensure that if Robert isn't speaking the truth then he will be done for treason.

That plan brings Elizabeth back into Robert's life. Her father blackmails her to seduce Edward in order to find out any secrets he has and to let the king know them. The idea of betraying Robert is abhorrent to her. She wants a Scottish king, she wants the English ousted from Scotland. But she has no choice in the matter or does she? Can the immediate connection between herself and Robert, and her deeds from the past help them to realise that they can work together to doublecross her father and Edward? Can they trust each other when it comes to life and death?

So there you briefly have an idea of what happens in the book. An outline is nothing compared to reading the whole thing which I wholeheartedly hope you do. The excitement, the intrigue, the betrayals and the clashes all come together to leave you feeling awed. Add to that the love and passion developing between Elizabeth and Robert, and this book will have you reading as quickly as you can so you can find out how it ends. Robert is the ideal Scottish warrior, he'd lay his life down for his people and the woman he loves. There were scenes where I broke my heart for him and what he had to do. His is such an emotional story and him such a perfect hero that you can't help but give him a piece of your heart before the story ends.

I have read and enjoyed many of this author's books, but this one I have to say must be her best yet. It ticked all the boxes for me and I can't recommend it enough. I am very much looking forward to the next in the series.

Outlaw King is the story of Robert the Bruce’s fight to save Scotland from the English King Edward. Though this tale has truth woven into it, it is a work of fiction. I loved every heart stopping minute of it. Elizabeth and Robert’s characters sprang to life and held my attention. A fantastic tale of page turning romance, murderous intrigue and betrayal. I can’t wait to read the next in the series - Renegade Scot.

Outlaw King is book one of the new Renegade Scots Series by Julie Johnstone. It’s a historical romance that relies on historical research and a bit of literary license by the author to make the story flow and engaging to the reader.
This is the story of Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh.
It begins in 1296 AD in Northern Scotland. This is a complicated story of not doing what you want, but what you must do to survive. Robert the Bruce’s father is old and probably soon to die. Bruce, the elder is basically a coward and refuses to fight the English. As his son, Robert is required to serve the man his father is allied with, so he’s in the process of helping the King take strongholds in Scotland. During this battle, Robert decides he is on the wrong side of the fight. It’s during this battle that Elizabeth de Burgh, disguised as a squire, helps to save many Scots from being burned alive by her father’s order. She must then return with her father and face his wrath, but first thanked Robert for aiding her… and that began their story.
How they managed to actually fall in love, despite the circumstances was a remarkable story. The writing is excellent, the history interesting, the romance and love scenes hot, the action not too brutal.
I loved this story and look forward tsandyso the next in this series. For me there’s no high as outstanding as a highlander renegade Scot.

History comes to life vividly in this book. Palace intrigue at its worst, betrayal around every corner and a love story for the ages! This epic love story is based on true to life events and the author does a wonderful job of bringing the period, the characters, the Royal plots and schemes into perspective. The different points of view of the key players in this difficult time in Scottish history are defined and readers will get a better understanding of all the nuances, twists and turns and changing loyalties, while enjoying a beautiful romance.

Robert the Bruce will do anything to release his country from English rule. After all he is the rightful heir to the Scotish throne. He has enemies on both sides and must be very weary. One wrong step could topple his nation and cost him his life and though he has vowed to never love one woman temps him and threatens his mission as no other ever has.

All Elizabeth de Burgh wants is freedom in a time when women don't have any. So when she is finally brought back to court from Ireland the last thing she ever expected was to be ordered by her father and her godfather, the King of England, to litterly seduce Robert the Bruce and reveal all of his secrets. She knows this isn't right and wants nothing more then to fight back against their cruelty. But they throw her beloved cousin in the dungeon and threaten to kill her if she doesn't do what they want. As she grows close to Robert the Bruce she starts to see him for the man he is and the king he will be.

I have finally read the perfect book! The Outlaw King by Julie Johnstone is the 1st book in the Renegade Scots series and I am holding my breath for book #2. This amazing story of Robert the Bruce and his 2nd wife Elizabeth takes you on an adventure like no other. I can’t even begin to imagine how much research Julie had to do to write this story. There are so many true characters, places and events that reading this book not only gave me a romance but a history lesson as well. Julie is truly one of the great writers of our time and this story is pure genius! This story comes alive in the 1300s when King Edward of England is trying to rule Scotland and all Scotland wants is to be free. Yes, William Wallace is also in this book. This story has evil, deceit, blackmail, love at first sight, trust, lies, prisoners, banishment, kindness, friendships, loyalties, honor, a coming war, cruelty, dishonor, enemies, escape, abuse, attempted rape, innocence and yes, even love. This is a must read story and I highly recommend you read this book. It is defiantly a page turner.

***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

1296 Northern Scotland. As this book started, I had no warning of the emotions that would come through as I turned each page. Robert the Bruce and his fated love Elizabeth de Burgh come to life through the pages of this amazing story of the fight for Scottish freedom over the English. As rightful heir to the Scottish throne, Robert is forced to make some hard decisions that bring him so close to death. In feigning loyalty to the English King Edward, he is walking a slippery slope to free his people. He is brought together with Elizabeth, who is the goddaughter of the king and who has been made a pawn to entrap him.
This amazing tale filled with lies, deceit, gut wrenching suspense and extraordinary love will take you away to another time and place and capture your heart. I have to admit I wanted to do real harm to King Edward and Elizabeth's father as they controlled her and Robert.
Julie Johnstone has truly outdone herself with this extraordinary story that I feel bereft that it is over but can only hope her next book in the Renegade Scots series will be published soon!!

Without a doubt the best thing Julie Johnstone has written.
The history is stunning, the action is Gripping and the characters are enticing and have you rooting for them from the minute their eyes meet .
It tugs at your heartstrings and gives you flutters in your stomach with the strength of love and emotions between these two , I only hope they experienced some of those feelings for each other in real life.
The Scottish history books are full of stories from the Great Bruce himself , it’s always been a time I’ve loved to hear about , that time is one I would love to go back to and see for myself .
Alas that’s not possible , but to read books as interesting and informative as this as well as enjoyable ,even if partly fictional, is great and when they are as well written as this one is , that’s something that can’t be beaten .
Very Highly Recommended !

What Braveheart was to William Wallace, The Outlaw King is to Robert the Bruce.

This is an amazing blend of fact and fiction, that will hold you in thrall until the very last page. Based on the struggle of Robert the Bruce to claim his crown and his relationship with second wife Elizabeth de Burgh.

This is a beautifully written tale filled with intrigue, betrayals, secrets, lies, desire and love. I wasn't sure I wanted to read this story, too many times fictional recreations of historical figures fall short in my expectations, but after reading this rendition, I can honestly say that this is story that you definitely don't want to miss.

This book mixes accurate Scottish history with a lovely romance. Robert the Bruce meets a young English girl, Elizabeth de Burgh, when her father was invading the Moray’s castle. Robert, and his friend Niall Campbell, had been commanded to invade the castle but they realize they’re on the wrong side. Elizabeth, disguised as a lad, was supposed to set fire to the outbuilding housing some captured Scots, but opened the door for the men to escape. While Robert, Niall, Lady Moray and their men fought, the English De Burgh tried to kill the lad. Elizabeth rips off her helmet and her father ceased action.

A few years later they meet briefly in Ireland as Elizabeth and her cousin Lillianna tried to escape from her family to France. Unfortunately, the man they hired was a swindler and never showed to meet them. Robert has never forgotten her, but Scotland comes before love. They meet again at King Edward’s court where Robert agrees to a temporary truce and hopes to gain information there. Elizabeth is brought to court to seduce Bruce into spilling his secrets but falls in love with him. They marry and live at his restored home in England while he plans to keep Scotland out of Edward’s hands. They have ups and downs as they sometimes believe the many lies surrounding them. They return to Scotland to fight for independence, but even among the Lairds there is discord.

I don’t think my review can accurately express how much I liked this book. It’s packed with romance, history, intrigue and wonderful characters - some real and others fictional. Julie Johnstone writes wonderful books Scottish books. I had a hard time not reading all night. It’s that good! I’m looking forward to the next one in this series.

Renegade Scot looks like it will be as promising a series as the highly coveted Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts series from Julie Johnstone. I love the Scots of old. This one takes things a bit further by adding renegade, king, and a bit of a history lesson to the mix. Robert the Bruce meets Elizabeth de Burgh and their lives take on a new direction. One that neither of them would have or could have imagined for themselves. The two of them meet for the first time only to be separated and many years pass by before the see one another again. This time there would be much at stake lives, futures, families.

Robert finds that he is the leg that his country and countrymen would need to stand on. There are many things that he must do and all of them can make or break his people and their land. You are certain to get a chance to reimagine the history of Scotland and England’s relations.

There are lies/betrayal, secrets, intrigue, intensity, romance, history. There was much emotion, sorrow, pain, disbelief and acceptance. At the heart of it all was a man that loved his country and a woman that he loved just as much but was uncertain if to trust her motives. Together they both, along with a country full of Scotsmen, work to save the land they loved and would do anything for to keep it and its people safe.

I have reads many of Julie Johnstone’s books and all are about or based in Scotland. I have to say that there was something a little different in this read and lead of the new series. I loved it and cherished each and every turn of the page. There was an intensity in this one that felt bone deep and connected to the past of the land that I have come to love and appreciate over the years.

I know there are many books written about Robert the Bruce and I know of at least couple of movies about him (notably one coming soon to theaters near you with Chris Pine playing Robert the Bruce and named aptly, Outlaw King), and for some reason I was always intrigued about this historical figure. He just seamed such a contradiction of hero to me. I was glad that Ms. Johnstone decided to write this story and blend historical facts, myth and fiction in this wonderful romance.

The story is well researched and well written, but it's the characters that make this story riveting. They keep the reader engaged and rooting, even though their fates have been sealed by history.

For some of you who might have doubts about fictional stories of historical figures, I'm here to tell you that this story will dispel all those doubts. It's that good and I think you should definitely read it.

Outlaw King:
After reading The Highlander Vows Series I didn’t think the wonderful Julie Johnstone could do better but I was wrong. In this new book she has brought together the history of Scotland’s battle for freedom with a fantastic love story between the mighty Robert the Bruce and his Queen Elizabeth. It has drama, treachery and intrigue of the royal court, it has loyalty to a cause so great that it’s worth fighting to the death for. It has suspicion that pushes a great love to the brink. Once I started reading I could not put it down, the way Julie combines historical fact and romance is flawless, being a Scot myself I was intrigued to see how fact & fiction could be brought together. It is done in such a way that the history does not over shadow the romance. I cannot recommend it enough, it makes me excited for the next in the series.

What a wonderful feeling we have when an author we are following and reading from the beginning of her career gets better and better each time! This is a wonderful read. The book is the perfect blend of historical accuracy and a great love story!
This is the amazing tale of Robert the Bruce and his second wife Elizabeth. The characters are greatly done and the book is awesome from the very first page until the last one. This story narrates the story when King Edward of England is trying to rule Scotland. It is full of intrigue, suspense, powerful enemies, strong alliances and of course, a wonderful love!

In Outlaw King Julie Johnstone’s creative talent brings together an absolutely awesome blend of history and romance. Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh are supposed to be enemies. They come together and fall in love in the chaos of the Scottish Rebellion. As they struggle to determine the right path to take, the way is made harder by the uncertainty of friend and enemy, subterfuge, and betrayal. This is a real page-turner. These characters come to life and the story that surrounds them pulls the reader in. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next one in the Renegade Scots series.

Dangerous love

I love Julie’s Johnstone books! Her passion for authenticity comes out. Even though it is fiction, one could imagine that this could be Robert Bruce and Elizabeth story. You feel as if you drawn in time, and you can feel the danger of loving your enemy. I appreciate the descriptions that you give the feel that you are right there watching as the story unfolds. I really don’t give a synopsis of the book. I prefer you to draw your own conclusions as you read. I love all of Julie’s books, but I think this one is great!!! Give it a read! Hope you enjoy!!!

History and romance collide in this fabulous tale of the man destined to free Scotland from English rule and the woman sent to destroy him.

I will be completely honest, I wasn’t sure if I would like a story based on real people and actual events. Having thoroughly enjoyed Julie Johnstone’s books in the past I knew it was well worth a try. Boy, am I glad I did…this book is FREAKIN’ FANTASTIC! The perfect blend of history, fiction, and romance.

Ms. Johnstone’s writing skills were shining brightly as she brought Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh to life in Outlaw King. Emotions leapt from the pages as Robert struggled with what he needed to do (and hold his tongue while doing it). As Elizabeth walked the line of doing what was expected and what she felt was right, you could see her strength and steely determination. Add the twists of forces that would see them brought down and uncovering who was friend or foe and you have a 10+star tale.

Thank you, Ms. Johnstone for one hell of story that opened my eyes to the perfect blend of history, fiction, and romance.

Publisher's Description:

She’s the weapon intended to destroy him. He’s the key to her freedom.

Dark days have come to medieval Scotland, and fierce warrior Robert the Bruce would do anything to release his country from English rule—and not just because he’s the rightful heir to the Scottish throne. As the bloody war rages on, enemies on both sides of the fight surround him, and Robert must dance a dangerous line between truth and deception. One misstep could topple his nation and cost him his life, yet one woman tempts him—and threatens his mission—as no other ever has.

Elizabeth de Burgh longs for freedom in a time when women have none. So when she finds herself ordered by her ruthless father and her godfather, the King of England, to seduce the leader of the Scottish rebellion and reveal his secrets, she yearns to fight back against their cruel plot. But they threaten to kill her beloved cousin, leaving her no choice but to comply. As she grows close to Robert and the mask that hides the man who would be king is peeled away, she cannot imagine aiding in the destruction of the noble Scot bent on liberating his people.

Bound by duty and honor but ensnared by passion, Robert and Elizabeth must determine if they are each other’s biggest threat or greatest source of strength. And moreover, they must decide how much they are willing to risk for the one thing neither ever imagined they’d find with the other—extraordinary, boundless love.

My Thoughts:

This book is a well written imagining of what happened with the well known historical figure, Robert The Bruce. Despite the violence and treachery of the times anything written about this figure, whether fact or fiction has always fascinated me.
I was completely drawn in by this extraordinary tale of love and deceit. The plot is well drawn out and the characters are entrancing. This is a not to be missed book by Ms. Johnstone.
Outlaw King can easily be read as a standalone historical romance.
I gave this book 4.75 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.5 of 5.0 flames. There is a palpable heat between hero and heroine.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the author to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
I also pre-ordered a copy of this title in Kindle Format before receiving the ARC.

1296 Northern Scotland

Robert I, popularly known as Robert the Bruce, was King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. Robert was one of the most famous warriors of his generation, and eventually led Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England.

I have read many biographies on icononic Scottish hero’s. People like Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scot, William Wallace, King James, and. Robert Burns. I do enjoy true history which this book does follow closely but of course she put her own spin on the romance. As Elizabeth de Burgh is a woman fully grown in this tale.

This story shows how difficult it is for Robert to open his heart and trust people outside his inner circle. He comes to admire the brave Irish Lass Elizabeth de Burgh. His enemies sense his attraction too, as the are English King Edward who is her godfather and her own father who will use his own daughter as seductress. Of course righteous and good hearted Elizabeth refuses until she sees they put her dear cousin in the dungeon threatening her life.

They expect Elizabeth to find out Roberts secrets and for her to share them with King Edward and her father. She is in a corner but soon wonders if she can trust Robert enough to share her burden. Robert has to behave like he is siding with the English to save his people. This is his way to be a step ahead to help the Scottish people.

This book has all the elements that Historical romance readers love: treachery, suspense, mystery, espionage, war, murder, lies, betrayal, suspicion, guilt, forgiveness, faith, passion and love. The setting and dialog are breathtaking, the characters are brilliant and the plotting is magnificent.

I highly recommend this book which is the first book in Julie Johnstone's Renegade Scots series. A book you don’t want to miss.

I received a gift copy from the author for a fair and honest review. I voluntarily agreed to read, review and blog All words, ideas and thoughts are my own.

This book immediately captured my attention, I love a story written around actual historical events and this one did not disappoint. I know the author had to do a ton of research given all the details of historical events leading up to the rebellion of Scotland. I always consider the Bruce to be a flip-flopper and chose the side where he would benefit more but this book tells an inside story of his inner battles to scheme his way close to King Edward while he played his cards for the future. You know the old saying, "Keep your enemies closer..."

The Bruce falls in love with the king's goddaughter, a man he despises and wants nothing more than to halt his efforts in taking over Scotland. But can he trust the king's bloodline? Can he keep his focus on the future of Scotland and yet fall in love with an Englishwoman? Will his love for her blind him to the truth? Will she deceive him? Is she a spy?

Elizabeth, as a young girl, showed her favoritism for the Scots at a early age....although I'm wondering if she only did what she felt was right to thwart the useless killing of other human beings. She pays a heavy price and her father sends her away for years until she meets up again with Robert the Bruce in Ireland.

Their story begins there, as does the story of the Scottish rebellion and the events leading up to Robert being crowned King of Scotland.

MY FAVORITE LINE IN THE BOOK: This game he played with her, the king, and her father was one where lives would be lost and kingdoms won. (I think this line sums up the book perfectly.)

An exciting read filled with historical facts and a love so passionate, it's legendary in its own sense. Add to that the rise of Scotland to become a free nation and you have this story. It's a great read, I recommend it. I was gifted with an ARC and am leaving an honest review of my thoughts on the book.

Since reading the Outlander Series by Gabaldon have fallen in love with Scotland. Got to spend three hours in Edinburg bot was not enough. Hope to visit Scotland soon. This is a romance book with Robert Bruce and Elizabeth. Their life is difficult as Robert pretends to bend the knee to King Edward. Will read Ms. Johnstone again. Thanks to Goodreads.
