Little Billy Hoffman was walking through the woods, winding a ball of string, when a strange thing happened. He looked up and before him stood a little boy who could have been his twin, a boy who was also winding a ball of string. The boys walked in unison as they advanced toward each other, until they touched and blended together. Billy was alone again—and holding two balls of string. Years later Bill Hoffman is a professor at Freeport College, where he develops his Unified Cosmic Force Theory. Strange happenings are afoot at the college. Professors who oppose the building of a football stadium may be in danger, and anonymous students are threatening to poison the college’s famous water well. Ed Packer, an investigative writer, is called in to explore the situation. He soon discovers that a campus fraternity, Kappa Kappa Kappa, might be involved. Dave Brand, another professor at the college, warns him about the fraternity and relates his own experiences…. "What I am going to tell you is not based on rumors. It is based on facts that I had the misfortune to experience firsthand. It is the reason why I was rejected for membership, and thank God I was!" The Cosmic Force includes various interesting philosophical talks given by the professors of the college. Ed enjoys attending these talks, and they give him an opportunity to get better acquainted with Norma Nomer, a college secretary with whom he falls in love. Ed and Norma are relieved when the bizarre events that plague the campus seem to have come to an end—but then Professor Hoffman inexplicably disappears. But what happened to him? Will it remain a mystery? Maybe you can suggest an answer!
