This book is A M A Z I N G!!!!! I read it all in a weekend!! I couldn't put it down! It made me laugh and cry and wish it never ended! I already can't wait for the sequel!

The plot is good and engaging but the strong suit of this book is certainly its characters! Well developed and loveable, in no time they make you feel involved in their well being.
And this is true even for the side characters, not only the protagonists! I found myself emotionally invested in their survival.

Another great thing of this book is its diversity and represantation!! With a few words, the author described the different genders, races and sexualities present in this world with such an ease as to make it seem effortless!
This book is a great example of how you can have good representation and still write a compelling plot that doesn't revolve around sexuality struggles. Not that there is necessarly something wrong with these kind of books but I for one appreciate the possibility to read about someone I can identify with that has adventures and enjoys a full life with loved ones and has ambitions and goals and is not defined just by not being ~straight~.

Last, for everyone for whom english is not their first language: it's not mine either and I can say that even if the language used in this book resembles more of a formal old english, in theme with the world the novel is set in, it's still easy to understand and follow for a not-native speaker.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants something fresh and epic and different!

I loved this book. It really is not often that I say this, but I really could not put this book down. I /consumed/ it. The characters, all of them, but especially the protagonist, drew me in and forced me into loving them.

The plot was engaging and well paced. The characters were intriguing and relatable. The author did an amazing job at creating a world with an adequate history, without getting into the weeds, like many fantasy novels do. As someone who does not often read fantasy novels, I felt this was an amazing story that bridged the gap between general fiction and fantasy seamlessly.

While I adored this book, and it made me cry multiple time, I do have one slight complaint. She did an excellent job of having characters of multiple races, genders, and sexualities which were represented really well. My complaint is not with the presence or absence of any representation, but rather with how she introduced the identities to the reader. I loved that they were casually mentioned so as to not make them the defining characteristic of the character, but sometimes the way the representations were written seemed shoved in. I think this was more of a writing /style/ complaint because I will repeat SHE DID A GREAT JOB WITH HOW SHE TREATED THE CHARACTERS' IDENTITIES. For example, she never makes a character's marginalized identity a personality trait or as a plot device. As a queer person myself, I was so glad to see queer characters treated the exact same as the straight, cis, white characters. I just think it was really heavy-handed at times, in inappropriate places.

I really cannot sing the praises of this book enough, though, because despite some minor flaws, the story was remarkably enjoyable and I cannot wait for the next installment in the series. I have fallen deeply in love with this richly developed world and the characters that fill it with life.

She is human and he is a elf prince. They both want something different to what is expected of them. They end up having to work together to try to get rid of an evil king. Can they work together? Can they do what is needed? See if they can

Was a bit too wordy and lengthy on some paragraphs. Details are great but some of it felt unnecessary. This book had me giggling like a school girl at the playful banter between Prince Loren and his bonded Tamsin. I’m sad it ended with them never admitting or acknowledging their feelings for each other out loud. The writing is great with dropping bits and pieces for you but leaving you wanting more.

As an avid fan of Tamora Pierce and her writing, I was really excited to read Burman's book inspired by Pierce. I really enjoyed reading it, it was very reminiscent of the books I read growing up. It is simply written, so it is quick and easy to read, and gives the sequels room for more character development.

I'm keen to see Burman's sequels for this, and look forward to reading more of her work.

There is nothing wrong with this book whatsoever, and I heartily recommend it to those who want to giggle-snort in-between the more serious moments. I suspect Terry Pratchett fans would get along with it very well. It just wasn't for me. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for Burman's future works!
