Well that was a short and predictable story with not enough chills for me. That being said, I think I would be petrified if I was actually in the woods at night when I knew people were waiting to scare me. I remember playing ghost in the graveyard as a kid with my siblings and screaming in terror when I was the searcher, and that was around my own house!
Apparently the author did some research on the illness described in this book so I would assume it is a fairly authentic representation. I actually think this might be popular in a high school library so I'm glad I read it.
The writing was so weird it was like it was put through Google Translate. Very literal and odd sounding English. The cover was beautiful and the description sounded so good, but it over promised and WAY under delivered. This also just wasn’t scary. Like at all. It was like the author didn’t want to really go for it because it was a YA so it was just super bland. The characters were very childish and juvenile. Really disappointed actually.
As I write this it's the first few days of Fall 2020.... Halloween is my favorite holiday! I have always loved spooky stories, crisp fall evenings, roasting marshmallows around a fire and telling creepy tales. So, once Fall officially begins, I start looking for scary stories. Fright Night sounded like a great candidate to help kick off the Spooky Season! I listened to the audiobook version of this story. Glad I did -- I loved this audio book! The use of multiple narrators really made the story come to life! And that's not always a good thing when it's a horror novel...even when it's a lighter YA one.
The basics: A group of friends decide to buy tickets to a local Fright Night event. At the same time, some troubled teens are working at the event. The two groups will come together with disastrous results. Dark pasts. Revenge. Misunderstandings. Evil. It's a Fright Night none of them will ever forget.
All in all, the story was entertaining. There were a couple plot twists that seemed a bit forced, but it's a scary story. It's not meant to be deeply complex fiction. The story kept my attention from start to finish and posed a enjoyably dark premise. And, it made me think of the times I attended Scarowinds at Carowinds Amusement Park in Charlotte. Lots of costumed actors out to give scares -- and just a fun time! I'm sure that's the evening these characters were looking for -- and they definitely got scares....just a couple that were too realistic!
Fun listen! I look forward to more by this author!
Dylan is struggling. He is currently living with his best friend while his mother is in the hospital. He's also trying to come to terms with the trauma from his past. When his friends suggest going to a local Fright Night event, he jumps at the chance. Maybe this will help him finally face his fears, reconcile his past and develop a closer relationship with others. But this isn't going to be a normal Fright Night. Some of the staff aren't just actors-they're there to cause mayhem and seek vengeance for the wrongs done to them. And the results will be disastrous.
This is a quick read with some sufficient chills thrown in. The parts that take place during Fright Night are unsettling, however, they are brief. I wish more of the Fright Night experience had been thrown into the mix. Although, things do go off the rails pretty quickly and what follows is tense and pulse-pounding.
The real highlight of this book was Dylan and his journey. What he went through was horrific. I won't get into specifics as to not spoil the book but the author stated that, while writing and researching this book, she spoke with a woman who went through the same trauma as Dylan. That's so heartbreaking and elevates this story even more for me.
this was so much more than just a fright night book, in fact the fright night was more of a background thing. The book really focused more on Dylan's trauma from his childhood. I really enjoyed it! I could have done without Sofia's POV since she felt more juvenile than the other characters. Overall I do think this is a perfect quick read for halloween time!!
A very quick read, but I feel like the actual concept of the book - the Fright Night itself - was barely explored. It would have worked better if it was just Dylan’s story which was interesting and compelling. A very quick read, but not my favorite YA thriller.
My Rating: 3 Stars Genre/Tropes: Young Adult Thriller
After reading the blurb for this one I thought it would be the perfect read for the Halloween season. After all, doesn’t the blurb scream TEEN SLASHER novel? To me, it did. Unfortunately, this is very far from the truth and this book was much milder than I anticipated.
First and foremost, I enjoy young adult books, especially thrillers. If I find a new one that sounds good the probability of me buying it is high. I may not read them right away (or all the time), but they ARE among my favorite types of books. So, when I saw this one at Target and realized it was only $7.99, I thought OKAY this is a steal, and the book sounds fantastic. It’s a little on the short side (slightly under 200 pages) but that doesn’t mean it can’t give some good scares. Boy was I wrong. There is NOTHING SCARY about this book. It’s much more of a psychological drama with a FRIGHT NIGHT setting (and it’s not even SET there the whole book).

FRIGHT NIGHT is a much more of a psychological drama than anything else and the reason is because most of the book revolves around flashbacks for one of the characters who suffered at the hands of his own mother via Munchausen by Proxy. This is where the mother (or parent/caregiver) induces illnesses on their child to gain sympathy from doctors. In some cases, parents go so far as to poison and or severely injure their own child: NOT COOL. It’s a sick thing and I’m sure you’ve read books or seen tv shows where this has happened. Anyway, this is what happens to one of the main characters and we see him almost suffer from the effects it has had on his mental well being through the book. Luckily, he has good friends and a great new home at this point so he can live a normal life.
One way to start acting like a kid his age again is to do fun things like go to FRIGHT NIGHT with a group of his friends. It’s a harmless scare park and should be a blast for these kids. Unfortunately, before they can finish something or someone sinister decides to take their lives into their own hands…
In all honesty, I felt like this was two books in one. On the one hand, were looking at the effects Munchausen by Proxy had on this kid’s fragile psych and on the other, it’s a thrilling story about revenge. Unfortunately, there was so little buildup to the events that they felt weird together. Sure, I liked the climax and how some of the stuff came together, but it was extremely unrealistic and for me, too little too late. I think this story could have been better if it were longer and we had some more build up.
I also want to mention that this story ISN’T a total loss and I read it quickly and enjoyed it. However, it certainly wasn’t a favorite which is why I’m giving it a solid 3 stars.
Wow, I must say I was pleasantly surprised with this one! The last 2 books I've read from Maren Stoffels I really didn't like but I enjoyed this one. There was more character development and it wasn't as rushed which made it easier to read from multiple point of views. I loved how this book was based around a haunted attraction as I've never read a book before like that. This book would have been a great Halloween read but I just couldn't wait till October to read it. Bravo Maren Stoffels, I was harsh with the other reviews on the books Room Service and Escape Room but this one I really enjoyed! The story line was great and had me questioning everything up until the very last page and I couldn't guess the twist at all which I really appreciate. All in all, I liked this book!
Mijn favoriete personage is Martijn.

This was a pretty fast read. I didn't get to read many of my horror novels in October. Honestly, this year has sucked with ready for me. I have been in a slump what feels like half the year.
TW: child abuse, abandonment issues, blood
This book was fun. If you are looking for something that reads fast, this is it for you.
We follow the story of Dylan and his struggle with life and friends. He has a secret that he feels like he cant trust anyone with. When he begins to get caught in lies, they begin to notice.
Sofia mention Fright Night to her friends and Dylan was the first to agree to go. With the issues that Dylan has, Sofia could not believe he was the first to offer to go.
You get 2POV's from Dylan. You get his past and his future. Now, sometimes it is done in a way that you have to watch because the story will being told in the present and all of sudden the story with now be in the past with no indication that the story just flipped to the past. After you notice what is going on, you begin to learn in the rest of the book and what is happening and it is easier to follow.
The story discusses Dylan and his mothers addiction to his sickness. As he is older and walks with a limp, his story catches up with him. He forgets what story he told to others and he gets caught in a lie which then he becomes questioned about.
Fright Night became more than just a night of fright but became his biggest fear. He came face to face with someone he never thought he would see again.
This is a solid 3. Maybe 3.5. It did interest me enough that I want to try another book from this author. So my next pick up with be Escape Room.
"That was the time to say: I'm not doing it. I'm not going with you into the woods. I'd done that, everything would have turned out differently. And you would still be alive."
I saw a lot of negative reviews about this one, but I actually enjoyed it. It was a fun, short YA story, and while it was a little predictable, it was still a great little read. I absolutely love the idea of a fright night, and I need to find somewhere I can go and join one of these. Midnight in the middle of a forest being scared for my life? Sign me up.
I am really, really not a fan of this writing at all. And I still have one more book to go. I’m only reading them because my boyfriend got them as a gift, and they’re easy reads. Not entirely enjoyable, but easy.
Many thanks to @PRHInternational for e-ARC via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
It was interesting thriller that revolved around seven characters and their night at Fright Night. The story was about friendship, revenge, child abuse, problem kids, secrets, facing past, and munchausen by proxy.
Writing was easy to follow and fast paced. It was written in first person narrative from Dylan, Sofia and Kelly’s perspective. There were chapter in the beginning of each part from murderer’s perspective making it curious who was it. This was character driven plot.
Fright Night setting was atmospheric. I enjoyed reading the stages characters went through. Most were not that horrible but insect zone was disgusting and it truly sent a shiver through me. What I liked most was Dylan’s past, revelation of his secret, and munchausen by proxy rep.
Why 3.5 stars-
I wish this was a bit longer with more fright stages. Seven characters in 200 pages so it took half of the book in character building and their background and another half had interesting parts Fright Night chapters along with Dylan’s past. This was tagged horror but I felt this was less horror and more psychological drama. If you’re looking for chill and thrill, you would be disappointed.
Overall, Fright Night was enjoyable, fast paced and interesting YA thriller.
I recommend this if you like, Story taking place in few hours Quick read Escape room or scary games trope psychological drama Munchausen by Proxy rep Character driven story
The significant quote that best represents the theme of this story is “It’s too late to turn back” because of its suspenseful and fearful background behind the event. I personally give this story a two out of five star rating. The reason why I give this two stars is because of how the author makes an effort for the story to be frightful. For example, as I am reading this story, there are moments when I am intrigued with the setting in the woods. In addition, there is also suspense in these moments and I like to keep reading just to see of what is to come when reading more.
However, There are three reasons why I do not like this book. First, as the moments become suspenseful it ruins itself by giving unnecessary comments between the characters. Second, this book is not as frightful because of how predictable the moments are in the book. Finally, the ending to this story is not great because of Kelly who bleeds out and tells Dylan sorry for his wrong-doing.
In conclusion, I give Fright Night by Maren Stoffels a two out of five star rating. It is not a very good book and I do not recommend reading it if you are looking for fearful turns of events.
Three friends decide to go to Fright Night, where their nightmares come to life. But it quickly turns into an actual nightmare.
*spoilers ahead*
So this was a quick read. I finished it in one sitting. I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s not good nor is it bad.
It is indeed about 3 friends going to Fright Night, a place where actors scare you and make you encounter your biggest fear. But, the book really isn’t surrounding that. It’s focused on Dylan, a boy with a very dark childhood, who is trying to keep up with his lies so his friends don’t know the truth.
The twist was not surprising. I had a feeling that is was coming. I probably won’t revisit this again.

Geweldig geschreven. *klapt in haar handen*
