March 1294. With David and Llywelyn in Ireland, the rule of Wales and England has fallen to Math and Anna. Unbeknownst to them, however, rebellious barons have tried to assassinate David and thrown Ireland into civil war. When the treachery reaches across the sea and touches Anna, she finds herself at the center of a conspiracy that stretches from Dublin to Edinburgh--and only her actions and choices stand between her family and the destruction of everything they've worked so hard to build.
Shades of Time takes place simultaneously with Outpost in Time, the previous book in the After Cilmeri series.
With over a million books sold to date, Sarah Woodbury is the author of more than forty novels, all set in medieval Wales. Although an anthropologist by training, and then a full-time homeschooling mom for twenty years, she began writing fiction when the stories in her head overflowed and demanded that she let them out. While her ancestry is Welsh, she only visited Wales for the first time at university. She has been in love with the country, language, and people ever since. She even convinced her husband to give all four of their children Welsh names.
Sarah is a member of the Historical Authors Fiction Cooperative (HFAC), the Historical Novel Society, and Novelists, Inc. (NINC).
The series continues to be exciting and interesting. Each book tells another piece of the story about an alternate universe version of medieval Wales. This one is as good as the rest. Thanksfpr the story, Sarah!
This book takes place at the same time as the one just below it on my read books list (volume 11), but in a different place with the other half of the characters. Wild fun, and one of the first times I have enjoyed the modern version of the world that characters occasionally find themselves in.
It's sort of amazing how how I've become a fan of 13th Century Wales through this series. I've enjoyed them all. This one features King David's sister, Anna as she travels between her alternate medieval England and 2022 London. Recommended.
Although my complaint may be due to the fact that I went back to reread the previous book before I read this one. It made for one very long read, so I may have caused the overload myself. There are an awful lot of characters. It's difficult to keep all the barons straight. But I do love this series. It's still the only one I purchase on pre-order without sampling. Sooooo Ms. Woodbury, write fast.
Each book keeps getting better. I was beginning to wonder where Dr. Woodbury was going to take this story but this last book answered that question. It has opened another very interesting path for all the characters in both timelines. Can't wait for the 15th book!
Sent at the same time as the previous book in the series, shades of time follows Anna and those left behind when David and his crew are in Ireland. When conspirators attempt to capture and or kill Anna she ends up landing in modern day Westminster Palace much for the surprise of the security cards working there who didn’t expect a woman dressed in medieval garb riding a horse to show up in the center of British government.
Now those left behind must track down the mystery of what’s happened to Anna and the conspiracy surrounding her abduction. While Anna has to contend with The problem is I have a 21st-century police state.
— Well I enjoyed this book it doesn’t feel complete to me. Especially since a lot of the issues raised in both this book and the previous book or fully addressed. In fact there’s a bunch of hanging threads that haven’t been wrapped up from the previous books, and it’s starting to feel like they’re never going to be wrapped up. That said I still love the characters I still am intrigued by the ideas of time travel put out here I’m just wondering whatever the end game is.
Because there really needs to be an end game. Ultimately it I’ll keep following for a little bit longer but I’m starting to wonder if this series is running out of steam.
Ultimately because I wasn’t fully satisfied with the ending I can only give this four stars
I started reading this series probably around 10 years ago. The first handful of books were amazing and I devoured them and then it became it or miss and I just stopped reading this series altogether. Then last year I decided to pick it back up once I found the audiobooks via hoopla and I can say that in a way I'm glad i did.
Are the books perfect, no. I sometimes feel this series and many books suffer from pacing and they get too bogged down on political and historical details. But I do find the concept of the series very interesting. Time Travel family that changed the course of medieval Europe but found out they created a parallel universe and their home future is still the same.
I was excited to see Anna take center stage finally, after many books as just a side character. However, this wasn't her moment to shine. She just seemed very weak-willed and wishy-washy and didn't enjoy her in the modern world. It would have been more enjoyable to see her fight her and her family's enemies. It seemed her story was only a setup to bring back some new characters to help continue to modernize their world and it just didn't work for me overall.
However, while this book was not what I wanted to still like the concept of the series it is so different then what I normally read and I know the author can write some great stories so I will continue to make way through these books.
This novel may include the longest day in fiction taking 260+ pages to cover the action of March 19 in both 1294 and 2022 from multiple points of view. While I can see few ways Woodbury could have changed how she unfolded events to remain true to the characters and the constraints of history. However much I enjoy this series and this novel the rotating of so many voices and events were wearying, particularly the 2022 storyline. I still don’t entirely get Woodbury’s rationale for the relentless pursuit and persecution nor Chad Treadman’s and Uncle Ted’s ideas about the two universes and times helping each other. Since this is the second book of a trilogy within a series maybe Champions of Time will clear things up. Meanwhile the range of Woodbury’s research and imagination in melding a new history is impressive and her characters as engaging, and complex in many cases, as ever.
It's during an attempted kidnapping that Anna finds herself making the journey to Avalon. Things have changed a lot since the last trip. She finds she has to place trust in a new man. Can she? Meanwhile Matt and Ieuwan try to track down who might have taken her. Trickery lands them both in a cell. David's coronation as High King of Ireland is met with awe as a plane suddenly appears. Great mix of events. Will keep you turning the page!
Only Sarah Woodbury could weave such an intriguing tale. At the beginning, it is turn the page, and read the next delights just to turn the last page and realize all to soon the story has ended once again. Ann shows her strengths as David acknowledges her steadfastness and loyalty. Oh and let's not forget the flying carriage...
I love the After Cilmeri series. This is one of Sarah Woodbury's best books thus far. The scenes and people are so realistic. Reading one of her books is like being there. I couldn't put this one down.
Once again Sarah has triumphed with this book. She has introduced more new characters into the mix adding new dimensions to the storyline. More excitement awaits in the next book.
I love this series. It was interesting to read what was happening to the rest of the family while David was in Ireland during the same time. I can't wait for the next book to come out.
As always, a great book. Great peril in all locations. Betrayal and loyalty, old friends and new, intense action make the book go fast and make it impossible to put down. I can't wait for the next one. This author never disappoints.
This has plenty of action, suspense, intrigue and interesting commentary on modern and medieval society and government. I have been quite fascinated by this series and look forward to each new book. The "time travel / sliding between alternate universes" element of this series captures my interest.
I have always been a fan of this series. The author never runs out of plotlines and great ideas. As usual, I was very satisfied by this book but now eager for the next installment.
I just recently started reading the After Cilmeri Series and I LOVE everything about it. I read all 12 books in 2 weeks and can't wait for the next one to arrive on my kindle next month.
