This collaboration between two distinguished architects is a joyous celebration of admired places and a thoughtful consideration of the role that design has played in giving these places their memorable qualities. Discussed are the Taj Mahal, Beverly Hills Civic Center, the Seagram building, and others. 182 illustrations.
Two architects exchanging letters paired with beautiful line sketching, rewriting what it means to understand the fundamentals of design and see it across time and place - a work of art.
“There are generic shapes that are so deeply embedded in our culture…they almost inevitably start a train of associations, reminding us of other places, other cultures, or more simply, the presence of other people”
“Buildings are vessels into which human energy can pour…gardens require even more energy… but the pleasures it gives back are perhaps the most precious of all, in sheer delight and in the sense of being connected to the earth, and all the natural world”
Thoroughly enjoyable exploration of architectural principles. The authors” framework of [Nouns] that [Verb] for each chapter sets up a unique framework for otherwise not wholly new explications of the basics of architectural design. Moore is a bit too enamored with his own work for my taste, but the sketches of both his work and numerous places around the world used to illustrate their ideas are completely enchanting.
At times meandering, but I loved the epistolary format (two architects exchanging letters about their favorite architectural and landscape elements from their favorite places around the world), with beautiful line drawings.
