I was put in the mind of a middle grade fiction whilst reading this book. I found both good and bad in this book, and I confess it took me a little longer to finish than I would have preferred. From my perspective, the story is nearly perfect for middle grade, hence my first statement. It's easy to read, characters easy to keep track of, lightly written on the battle without too much gore. I enjoyed some of the characters, especially Mackenzie, whom I'd like to know more about. I was disappointed by the quickness of each scene, as they could have been a little longer in my opinion. I really do think this is a good book for middle grade students and for adults who are learning to read.

I wouldn't say that this was a sequel, but it was definitely a spin off with some of the characters from the first book. I'm not sure if that was just my interpretation or more of what the author was going for. Visually the writing of the book was a little strange (formatting, page breaks, paragraph divisions, etc). I found that there were a lot of characters and I had a hard time connecting with any of them because we jumped back and forth between them a lot. Overall movements in the book were too quick for me (I found it hard to keep track of where we were and what time of day it was, etc.).
