Interesting investigation into who the serpent in the Garden of Eden really was. Using Scripture to bolster his claims, Carl Gallups makes a very persuasive argument that this was no”snake” and the eating of the fruit was a euphemism for a much more serious “sin”. I have read the Bible several times and never noticed the verses Gallups pointed out. Truly there was more to the incident in the Garden which caused the first instance of sin and required the need for a Savior. How he ties all this together using only Scripture makes what he sets forth quite believable. Carl Gallups really knows his Bible and can explain his point of view in a way that is understandable for anyone to grasp. Enlightening and well researched.
Author and pastor Carl Gallups wrote in the Introduction of this 2018 book, “let’s begin by asking a foundational question. Is it an academically sound practice to read a passage of Scripture and stop there… without doing an extensive comparison of related passages? Of course not… the Bible isn’t simply a random collection of individual passages. It is a cohesive and inspired unit… The plain truth is that the third chapter of Genesis happens to be that foundational platform for the entire biblical message… Why is it, then, that we so frequently insist upon turning that vital chapter into a childlike bedtime story? How can the Garden account so often be glossed over … without appealing to a deeply academic study of contextual biblical comparisons? You’ll soon find the answers to these questions. But be forewarned: The truth is not very pretty, nor is it always comfortable. I have a feeling you’re going to be shocked by what you see… as we move forward.” (Pg. 2-3)
He states, “Even a number of sincere believers still have difficulty imagining the possibility of the existence of unseen dimensions---especially realms that might be inhabited by intelligent beings who sometimes interact in our earthly domain… However, regardless of the various objections, the disclosure of the existence of the unseen realm is one of the most prominent communications of God’s Word… the Bible assures us that the ‘other side’ exists, and that the reality of its existence is crucial to understanding the overall biblical message as well as our own earthly existence and purpose.” (Pg. 15)
He notes, “A number of scholars believe they have narrowed down the location of the actual Garden of Eden… They insist it was originally located not only in Israel, but perhaps on Mt. Zion itself---in the very center of Jerusalem, the city of God… Given the … attention of certain international powers aimed directly at Israel, particularly the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, it would make perfect sense that this is, in fact, the angelic/demonic battleground of the ages.” (Pg. 41-42) Later, he summarizes, “The Garden of Edan and god’s holy mountain are the same place… The original Garden most likely corresponds with … the area of Mount Zion… Satan’s holy assignment was guardian of the Garden of Eden… The boundary lines between the earthly Garden of Eden, the heavenly Garden of den yet to come, and the Garden of Eden that exists right this moment in God’s unseen realm are thin indeed…” (Pg. 54-55)
He asks, “Where in the Bible do we ever … run into a literal, walking, talking snake? Nowhere… Also consider that Adam himself had named all the animals … In so doing, did he ever run across a snake that could walk upright and talk like a man? No… Think about it. If Adam and Eve had never seen an animal like this, how is it that they apparently saw nothing unusual about a snake that was now conversing with them in the Garden, walking around on two legs, and looking them in the eye? I don’t know about you, but I’m creeped out by the thing after just talking about it!... The Garden and the Fall of humanity are mentioned several more times throughout Scripture. But never do we hear anyone in those Scriptures even come close to suggesting that there was a literal snake in the Garden that could communicate in human language and walk upright on hind legs. And there’s a reason it’s not there… To explain every element of Genesis 3 in a literal manner defies almost every modicum of logic and proper exegetical exploration… It also places the Garden of Eden in the embarrassing and unfair category of simply reading like another piece of ancient folklore…” (Pg. 70-71)
He states, “This next question may be one of the most contentious and important topics of biblical argument regarding Eden… Does the Bible ever clearly equate the serpent in the Garden with Satan himself? And does it assure us that no literal, conversational serpent was there that day?... if Scripture does succinctly disclose that the serpent of Genesis 3 was a mere symbol of the literal person of Satan, we then possess a much different interpretation of the entire Genesis account, especially the nature of the sin that occurred there.” (Pg. 83) Later, he summarizes, “There simply is no way to escape the fact that the Garden tempter was Satan himself, not Satan ‘disguised’ as a snake… Adam and Eve are indeed literal characters… However, the SERPENT of Eden and everything connected with it, is an unquestionable metaphor for the literal person of Satan.” (Pg. 107)
He continues, “After ‘eating… the fruit,’ Adam and Eve were immediately engulfed with shame. How did they demonstrate their remorse?... they covered their sex organs with a quickly crafted ‘loincloth.’ Finally, they skedaddled deep into the woods to hide themselves---and their cloaked genitals---from God. What a strange set of reactions, UNLESS… What kind of activity could then have engaged in that would have made Adam and Eve react this way? I can only think of one reason that would be their very first recourse… We are told… that prior to the Fall, Adam and Eve were naked, and they were unashamed… Yet, immediately after their sin, which was associated directly with Satan’s allurement, they WERE ashamed---specifically of their sexual organs. They express that shame by covering their genitals…” (Pg. 110-111)
He insists, “the New Testament writers … most certainly identify that our entire sin nature was born, somehow, from the base of ‘epithumia’ [lust]---and it dates back to the Garden of Eden… Lust was born through the Garden sin---you know, the type of epithumia that, after committing a certain act, would make a man and woman want to quickly cover their genitals in horrid shame and then flee into the woods to hide.” (Pg. 131-132)
He argues, “Why did God tell Satan he would crawl on his belly and ‘eat dust’ all the days of his life?... The metaphorical phrases ‘eating dust’ and ‘crawling on your belly’ speak of Satan’s horrific fall from his previously exalted position. He will be reduced to ashes. He will be destroyed. He will be cast down to the earth---into the dust of creation itself.” (Pg. 168) He continues, “here is the final analysis of the matter. Since the serpent is a mere symbol of the literal person of Satan, EVERYTHING that follows in the text regarding a slithering, cunning, wild animal and the description of crawling on your belly and eating dust is also meant to be taken as symbolism.” (Pg. 170)
He recounts, “Chief Crazy Horse… just four days before he was slain… announced, ‘I see a time … when all the colors of mankind will gather under the Sacred Tree of Life and the whole earth will become One Circle again.’ Please understand: I certainly am not suggesting that a quote from Crazy Horse should be considered equal revelation to the Word of God. However, biblical truth is biblical truth, regardless of whom the Lord might choose as revelator.” (Pg. 203)
He tells of a discussion with an Israeli tour guide, that he “began to trace the three significant valleys that were an integral part of the Jerusalem landscape… As a result of my finger movements, I had traced out what looked similar to the letter ‘W’ in the English language… [The tour guide] exclaimed, “The valleys outline the shape of a shin! It is the Hebrew letter that stands or the Name of God!’… The letter ‘shin’ …truly does look similar to the English letter ‘W.’ The shin is the first letter of the Hebrew word ‘Shaddai’ (the Almighty)… That latter particularly signifies that God alone is Elohim, the Almighty.” (Pg. 230-232)
He predicts, “It appears Jerusalem truly is the spiritual Ground Zero for the coming war of the ages, just as the Bible declares it to be. And if it is, indeed, the original location of the Garden of Eden as well as the heaven-declared location of Yahweh’s soon to be restored Eden/Paradise, then why should we be surprised by the demonic outpouring that accompanied Jerusalem’s legal declaration as Israel’s capital? As prophecy continues to unfold, the Bible predicts that most of the unveiling will center upon the land of Israel, and particularly the city of Jerusalem, the place where God placed His Name from the beginning and, the place where, more than likely, the original Garden of Eden stood.” (Pg. 245)
Pastor Gallups is usually a pretty reliable exegete; but his ‘symbolic’ interpretation of Genesis 3 ignores all of that chapter’s discussion of ‘knowledge of good and evil,’ being ‘like God,’ etc. And his interpretation of the Edenic sin as lust (Gen 1:28, anyone? God had already told them to ‘be fruitful and multiply’) leaves me shaking my head.
Very informative book about our beginnings in the Garden of Eden and what really happened there. He takes us through the Biblical account and history, and goes into depth explaining what probably happened based on all the clues and evidence in the Bible, and how it is affecting us and our world into today. he asserts that all the ills of today can be traced back to that one fateful instance in the Garden, and how Satan has been working at separating us from God ever since.
Very thought provoking book - the Bible promises that knowledge will increase at the time of the end and reading this book helps you to understand and gain understanding of what really happened in the Garden of Eden that led us down the path on which we now find how we are living. Well written but the last chapter is a real eye opener.
The title and knowing a little about who Pastor Gallups is drew me to this book. The 3/4 of the book blew me away. His insight to the word of God was new and interesting. His beliefs on what the words truly mean and how they parallel other parts of the Bible are eye opening. His conclusions are great and thought provoking. (I kept reading passages to my family to get their take on the book.) About 3/4 of the way through we seemed to have arrived at the station and then jumped on another train. This ride was just as good and thoughtful but I felt the reader was left without an answer to the questions brought up in the first parts. This is worth the read and it is a great book to share with other believers.
I highly recommend anyone who wants different views/opinions on the Garden of Eden to read this. He offered a wealth of commentaries on the subject. Many times I had to step away because it was a shift in paradigm thinking and honestly could get uncomfortable. Other times, the way he connected the dots made what was written in the Bible so much more fascinating and understandable. He does a great job using short chapters to break up scholarly information.
While I will be studying more about this, I don’t completely agree with everything he suggests.
An Excellent Commentary on Genesis 3 The fall as depicted in Genesis 3 has been relegated to a children’s bedtime story. In Gods of Ground Zero, Pastor Carl Gallups does an excellent job returning the biblical narrative to its rightful place – ground zero of the battle of good versus evil. His exegesis of the identity of the serpent is outstanding, but the standout section is his tracing of the location of the Garden of Eden. Gods of Ground Zero is an eye-opening book and should be read by everyone interested in better understanding spiritual warfare.
This is not a how to book but mostly interpretation of Scripture so that you can gain understanding in the Spiritual realm. I cannot find obvious errors, although I cannot completely confirm his interpretations. We just don’t know about certain events and Carl Gallups acknowledges this. The book deals with the serpent in the garden, Jerusalem, and the Spiritual family in heaven along with today’s deceptions.
This book was scholarly yet remained interesting throughout. The reference to numerous resources scaffolded the information and supported Pastor Gallops’ message. I now have a greater thirst for the information revealed in the book and thus marks the beginning of my quest for a deeper understanding of the Tree of Life.
The author has done a "second gleaning" of God's Word and come up with amazing parallel connections concerning the Garden of Eden and it's significance. Puzzle pieces connecting truths that were "hidden in plain sight." Worth the read for anyone wanting to see more of the layers of God's Word pulled back. Hard to put down.
Down The Rabbit 🐰 Hole 🕳 : This book unmasks Biblical metaphors that will spin around in your headspace for days. Easy to read and keeps you wanting to learn more.
For instance, this page-turner even makes the case that the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was not a literal tree.God was metaphorically saying trees are really members of His Council at the time. Amazing!
Reading it again: packed with thought-provoking research on the true events that transpired in the Garden of Eden that have directed the misfortunes of mankind ever since.
