I didn't think I'd ever return to this town.

The small mountain where I grew up is full of memories, most of them are bad. Even though my homophobic parents no longer live here, coming back here always reminds me of them and all of the trauma I experienced in my childhood. All the trauma that eventually led to my abuse of drugs and crippling depression. I've overcome most of that, but it's still hard to be here.

I only have one good memory, the memory of Wendy. She was my best friend growing up and the only woman I've ever truly loved. But we haven't spoken in years and I don't think she's going to want to see me. I don't want to see her either, to be honest. I'm to embarrassed of everything I've done. But I'm not here for her, I'm here for the funeral of another old friend. So I've got to suck it up and deal with all the pain. Then I can go back to my successful, happy life as an award-winning author.

Though, if I'm being honest, something is still missing from that life... And I think it might be Wendy.

Do I even matter to her?

I once thought I was very important to Andrea but after everything she did, I no longer believe I was. I've read her book, I expected to be in it since we were absolute best friends and grew up together. But she barely mentions me. If I was writing a book, there'd be chapters on chapters recounting our relationship.

But she isn't obligated to care for me. So even though she's back in town, I'm not obligated to care for her either. She really hurt me and there is no coming back from that. I wish her well, I have no ill feelings, but I can't pretend that I want to rekindle our relationship.

Except, deep down, I really do miss her.

This is a standalone lesbian romance novel with HEA ending!

Wow. This was just...so bad.

Author Andrea goes back to her hometown for her friend's funeral. She's anxious about it, mostly because she doesn't want to run into the woman of her dreams (the one she didn't write much about in her book, for reasons later stated), Wendy. Naturally, of course she runs into her & they have some arguments about Andrea's sobriety, disclose their love for each other & have their HEA. 🤔😡 I tolerate cheesiness, especially in romance, up to a point. STEEP SLOPE was just ludicrous.

First off, Andrea acts like a child. Worse than a child actually. She's whiny, judgmental, immature, plays the victim- ugh!! I just about lost it when she succumbed to peer pressure & ruined her sobriety by having a shot. This isn't HS! I don't have any sympathy for her because she doesn't think anything through, doesn't think anyone else has a difficult life. She just expects Wendy to come to the rescue. And she does! Wendy attempts to put her foot down & sends Andrea off to take a break because she doesn't want to see her go back down the addiction path. Not even 24 hours later Andrea's back at her doorstep & Wendy just accepts it. Wow. How romantic.

The HEA was pointless. They hadn't seen each other for a decade, then dated for a few months, then decided it was time to spend the rest of their lives together. Now obviously I'm not in the position to say this doesn't work; I'm sure it's happened before. But not like this, with a woman who doesn't have to take responsibility for her actions & a woman who's a complete pushover. So let's add marriage & children in the mix (important conversations that weren't discussed in depth prior) & call it a day! It's all too much.

Considering how much bad luck I've had with this author, I think it's just best I don't continue following her endeavours.

Childhood best friend reunion romance.

Steep Slope is a bit of an odd duck. The main characters are Andrea and Wendy. Lifelong best friends whose feelings ran deeply, their relationship was torn apart. Homophobic parents, small town peer pressure and substance abuse were more than two young women could overcome.

This book was written with alternating first person narration. It was adapted from a previous version that featured gay men instead of lesbians. I have come across the same thing from books by H. L. Logan. I understand the impulse to cater to different subcultures. I do feel that this formulaic approach sells the subject matter short. The books that I've read were short and rushed toward the fabled HEA. Luckily with Kindle Unlimited, it's just time at stake. I'm not sure that I'll spending anymore of mine on this lesbigay fiction.

A big blobby book of telling

I couldn't finish this story. Too many points of view annoyingly swapped around, each just as much a blob of poorly written telling. Nothing distinguished one voice from the next. It was an angsty display of poorly grasped characters, none of which were particularly likeable. All I kept thinking was, "Oh shut up already! And get to the story." But it wasn't worth it. Couple all of this with lousy editing and it's a mess. Would not recommend.

Good story

I enjoyed this story. The author was blunt in how Andrea’s life evolved to the point she was at now. Heather’s character was equally good in the sense that she stood her ground with Andrea on what she was not willing to put up with any longer. Well done.
