Whether you are looking to significantly boost your earnings by becoming Six Sigma Certified or are simply looking learn about the strategies and tools necessary to support quality improvement initiatives, this training manual offers the largest value available. This comprehensive guide was designed with the reader in mind. Other Six Sigma books typically fall into one of two categories. Either the training material is too comprehensive (leaving the reader to feel overwhelmed) or the material is too "watered-down" (leaving the reader without the necessary knowledge to be successful). Our guide strikes the perfect balance by providing as much depth as the reader would like. The material in our training guide is broken down into 4 areas. Units 1-2, provide an excellent introduction to Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma as well as a brief overview of the methodology (ideal for White or Yellow Belt Certification). Units 3-5, covers more advanced Six Sigma concepts in addition to beginner statistics and intermediate statistics, along with helpful guides for computing statistics with software like Excel & Minitab (ideal for Green Belt Certification). Units 6-8 dive further into advanced concepts and processes within the Six Sigma methodology (ideal for Black Belt Certification). The remaining sections cover Six Sigma across 19 different industries, such as Six Sigma in Healthcare, Finance, Human Resources (HR), Information Technology (IT), Military/Defense, Government, and more.
Six Sigma is a framework for creating, measuring and iterating any type of valuable activity with the help of statistical reasoning, in an organisation. Although implementing Six Sigma to its full is a very cumbersome and heavy process (which also never ends), all forms of organisations can develop these kinds of processes surrounding at least some of the recurring activities, and arguably should aswell.
The DMAIC or DMADV methods aren't really scientific methods, but at least some form of approximation that might reduce intuitive decision making.
The only thing that bugs me a bit is the naming of the method itself, but also the talk of different types of "belts" signifying expertise. I get that they are trying to monetize courses and certifications out of this stuff, though.
Enjoyed this book. Very good for understanding the basics of the six-sigma process. This particular version has many "how-to" on Excel and Minitab, which I did not find overly useful.
Some key aspects I took out of this book 1) The cost of quality. Typically the Cost of Poor quality is known, indicating external and internal failure costs. However, we tend to overlook the cost of quality. The price we are paying to prevent poor quality. If this is not measured, we can easily tend to overpay on prevention costs. 2) DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). This taught me that the first step (Define) is something I need to do better at work. We sometimes run into solutions without really defining the problem. The end result is we haven't solved the problem.... we weren't crystal clear on what it was we were trying to solve. Very important to get the first step correct. Also the last step needs to ensure sustainability. 3) Scope creep (in the definition stage). Project members and management members need to agree on scope. It is a very important item to ensure the success of the team.
I haven't tested, so I can't say if this book helps or not, but it claims to cover everything. If this is the case, the testing should be easy. Simplified the math. It's like an amalgamation of hundreds of nonsense business strategy books boiled down. It's all intuitive. In the end, the focus is always the bottom line.
Really helpful refresh on applicable statistics and the Six Sigma methodology. Chapters not as useful to me but may be more useful to others were all the Minitab How To guides.
Great book to support someone in learning about Lean, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma, and statistical analysis. It will guide you from beginner's concepts through to an advanced comprehension of these frameworks/approaches and their practical applications.
