Hakase Mizuki, The Demon Ororon, vol. 1 (Tokyopop, 1999)
Fun little book, this, with engaging (if somewhat primitive) artwork. Storyline is a touch confusing, but as I read more manga, I've cone to see that's actually the norm for the first volume in any given series. Basic premise is simple: can a demon and a half-angel live in peace with one another, and without their various friends, familiars, and hangers-on killing one another? The thing that really gets me about this one is how different the artwork looks from most manga I've read. None of the androgynous, huge-eyed stereotypes here, which means that some of the characters are actually cute. Not a bad beginning at all. ***
There are some good ideas here, but the execution is sadly lacking. Hakase has a wonderful way of drawing gracefully elongated, willowy figures, but not much else. Backgrounds and settings are all but nonexistent. The story--a half-angel shows kindness to the King of Devils, who starts falling for her--has enormous potential, but winds up being a confused mess. Characters are thrown into the plot blender, which is set on purée. Granted, this is volume 1, but I think we can reasonably expect a bit of an ongoing plot to surface by the end of it.
Romeo-and-Juliet takes on Heaven and Hell. A beautiful love story with unique art. It's horribly violent in some parts, but I'm totally in love with it. I just wish the series was longer
This manga was just as weird and in places super uncomfortable as I remember it being. The romance is insta-lovey, and is definitely the part that makes me uncomfortable. I think it might be the age difference and my inability to see why Ororon and Chiaki would fall in love. Other than that, I was reading the volume in Danish, and I'm pretty sure that there's something wrong with the translation (not that that is a surprise), because the dialogue barely makes sense in some places. The bad translation makes the story difficult to follow in some places.
Jag hade svårt att se skillnad på de olika karaktärerna och det kom hela tiden nya som jag inte fick något grepp om vad de var för några och vilken plats de hade i historien.
I really don't like the art for this series, but the story and mythology is amazing. The writing/translation isn't as disjointed as most other manga is. The characters are distinct, consistent, and sympathetic. The story here is unique, cute, and touching without being overly romantic or explicit (at least, not beyond what is necessary). This used to be a favourite of mine when I first read it in high school, but I think my abandonment of manga and my more critical outlook on reading has made me change my mind the second time around. Ultimately, however, the story for this manga is superior to all others I have read.
August 2013: 4.5 Stars (Shown as 5) It sort of surprised me, but I really, really liked it! Although the art took some getting used to, and Ororon and Chiaki's relationship developed at light speed, I liked the intricacies of the world Hakase Mizuki created. It was very interesting! And at the end of the day, the lead characters were very well developed, and I do ship Ororon and Chiaki :) Unfortunately, I think TokyoPop has discontinued the series, because the volumes seem to be impossible to find. But I'll do my best, because volume one ended with our two leads in peril, and I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!
I don't know how to read manga. I get the back to front & sequence. But all the characters look alike to me and there are close-ups, apparently emoting, with big Japanese letters. Is this the manga equivalent of the TV Batman's "KA-Boom!"? I like the story-line: a half-angel is nice to a young demon and they come to love each other. Shakespeare in manga, sorta.
This short 4 book manga series holds the honor of being my favorite to date. Perhaps its the brevity, or it could be the powerful ending, or maybe just the fantastic artwork. Who knows, it's just wonderful.
There are 4 vols. to this manga series. I normally don't like manga. But I am a little geek girl. Demons who love angels, angels who love demons. Fantastic haircuts and sharp suits.
This book immediately drags you in with its art and then the content. If you're into romance with a dark twist and have an unhealthy interest in heavenly bodies.....grab it.
