At the moment, I'm re-reading all the children's books I still own.
This one was published by Lemniscaat, which was (and still is) a very reknowned Dutch publisher.

One evening Patrick and his friend Tom see a girl enter into an art museum with a large rectangular package which she leaves in the basement.
They're intrigued and try to get in touch with this girl.
But then events are moving quickly as they're trying to resolve this mystery.

This book from 1989 was ahead of its time in terms of diversity.
Patrick relies on a wheelchair since his birth and Tom is deaf. They're communicating through sign language.
Both youngsters got to know each other through GENGK, an association which connects disabled and not handicapped children.

The premise of this book sounded interesting, but the story turned out to be quite unbelievable.
Especially in modern times, there are several things that wouldn't be possible anymore.
And even back in the days it was already quite exaggerated.

Another gripe is that the author didn't seem to know which way to go in terms of writing style.
Sometimes he tries to be quite literary, while other times he's too straightforward in comparison.

And then there were the famous tropes of puppy love and (way too much) miscommunication.
*sigh*

Glad to have read it again, but sadly enough this book didn't stand the test of time.

Pageturner.
