A Mother's Love

Rate this book
She lost her mother but found hope...

Liverpool, 1940: there comes a moment in every child’s life when they must learn to stand on their own two feet.

For fifteen-year-old Ellie Lancton, that time has come all too soon. The death of her mother and the increase in air raids leaves Ellie alone and in grave danger. It’s not long before she is forced to leave her beloved Liverpool behind and cross the Mersey to seek refuge in the countryside.

But as the war takes comforts away, so too does it bring new opportunities; for work, new friendships, and perhaps a little love…

It will take all of Ellie’s courage to find her way without her mother’s guidance. But if Ellie can soldier on with grace and dignity, there might just be light at the end of the tunnel.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads database.

Katie Flynn was born in Norwich and attended Norwich High School, where she was extremely happy and extremely undistinguished. Published at the tender age of eight, in Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories, she joined a Writers’ Circle as an adult, publishing short stories, articles, etc; only turning to novels in 1971 because the postal strike cut off her main source of income!
At first she wrote under several different names – Judith Saxton, Judy Turner, Lydia Balmain, Judith Arden – but her Katie Flynn books were a delight to write and proved far more popular than she had dreamed. She has now published nearly ninety novels, twenty-seven of which are Flynns. Her most recent titles are: Lost Days of Summer and Christmas Wishes.

What a beautiful book of love, war, friendship and family Ellie is young when she loses the one person she loves beyond measure and then to have work so hard to pay the rent on the only home she has ever had. Then disgusting landlord Sid tries to take her innocence but she escapes and finds safety on Connor Murray's uncles farm.As she settles in to her new home she learns how to care for the animals and how to tend the crops.Aiden Murray makes sure she is safe and secure but knows that she wants to join up with her best friend Arla to do their bit for the war effort.Aiden wants to join up too but an accident on the farm as a boy damaged his leg leaving one leg longer.Ellie tells him to keep trying to full-fill his dream of joining the RAF.I can highly recommend this book it is worth more than 5*and written by a wonderful lady.

This was refreshing. All about the daughter's life. set in hard times during ww2, based in Liverpool. It sets a real capsule in time. With the accent. The way communities stuck together, looked after each other in hard times. The daughter is orphaned at 15yrs and it's all about her development into a young adult alongside the threat within a scary world. Nothing too shocking, just the right balance of characters that help shape her and her fierce determination in a world where women are stepping up to fight in war, communities and society.

Mixed feelings about this book . Although on the whole I enjoyed it ,it was very similar to the other 2 Katie flynn books I've read .
I don't know if its a running theme with her books as in orphaned child ,bit or romance ,the jealous trouble maker and joining the forces ?
Pleasant enough read but not very exciting .
