The beginning with the dark glimpses of the Bollywood splashing across few lives, make it clear enough this one by Novoneel isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
Ever known that sometimes it is impossible to replace the absence of a particular one, why? Memories are enough for survival, how? Anger can destroy even saints, when? A desire which converts itself into indefinable form, what?
Concept: 3.75/5.0
Execution: 4.0/5.0
Characters Bespoken: 4.0 /5.0
World Building: 3.0 /5.0
Cover: 3.5/5.0
Writing Style: 3.0/5.0
Overall: 4.0/5.0
Dividing into three parts (As the book):
• Letting into Shahraan Ali Bakshi’s life, a Bollywood legend with captivating past chords start picking you up into a heartbreaking love fable.
“Do you know, Shahraan, what is a smile called when it falls in love? A teardrop.” - Mehfil Mehfil’s well-built existence in his present world will allure you with Shahraan to his past arresting you awe-struck.
Simultaneously, Reva Gupta & Neev Dixit - the struggling actors’ efforts paint the real sinister picture of Bollywood.
Nishani Rai an ominous character adds the fire into with one word - Revenge
Kaash Sehgal makes me speculate how it so damn easy for him to love a person who is miles away from him unknown from his never confessed love, with all the beautiful letters, addressed to her unsent.
• Part two has consequences of actions which took place in part one which are derivatives of the quest for love, ambition, and revenge.
• Of course, it ends with confessions. The characters intertwine in fashion the way blood does with vodka. It does have after effects lingering to scrutinize certain actions of Shahraan Ali Bakshi's obsession with Mehfil's memories which is addictive. Neev Dixit and Reva Gupta's passion drove them to crazy ends.
"Nishani Rai" holds the book until the end!
Language is a drawback in this one, which actually surprised me or I guess it a typical factor when it comes down to Mumbai & the Bollywood. Also, it’s a bit cliché how characters interlace within themselves.

TRULY 'NOVO'LICIOUS!!!
I truly appreciated his 'out of the box' theme and his way of story-telling... It is something which very few can master and novoneel is one of them!! Though the book could have come out a bit better as compared to his 1st two books, i would truly recommend this book to every1... He is undoubtedly my favourite author from the beginning!!! :)

How about a sin tonight is a novel about Bollywood that tries to paint the film industry in dark colours. It is a story of five people with dreams of stardom, intent on fulfilling their dreams at any cost. Three-fourths of the book comprises back stories of the five characters obsessed with Bollywood, and the last one-fourth brings them together to set up a climax.

The book starts with a sex scene that is remarkable in its lack of elegance and subtlety, which then sets the tone for the rest of the book. What follows is a stream of sleaze and poor taste (my personal view). While one of the five – a legendary actor called Shahraan – succeeds on the back of a string of lucky breaks that are far from credible, the rest of them have to resort to sordid means.

The book will have the reader believe that willingness to trade sex for success is fundamental to progress in Bollywood. I don't have a clue if that is indeed the case, but I found little by way of insight or details in the book that lend authority to the dark picture.

An issue I had with the novel was the language, which I found hard to stomach. Not that I am averse to violence and sex in crime fiction (I rated The Godfather 5 on 5), but I found the deliberate overuse of the f-word tasteless. Unnecessary profanities used to paint a sordid picture detract from the flow and the story. A fixation with sex is evident through the book. For instance, the crowd at Bombay VT station is described as 'a gush of sperms'.

Having said that, I found idea of taking back stories of five characters and entwining them to set the stage for conflict to be a good one. One side character – a prostitute in one of the back stories – is interesting. She casts a shadow decades into the future.

Overall, it is not a book I would recommend unless one is obsessed with Bollywood, and wishes to wallow in a fictional account of its squalor.

From the most beautiful space in their souls to the most confused portion of their hearts and the dirtiest corners of their minds… Love.Took.Them.Everywhere

In the rat-race of IIT-IIM writers we see that almost everyday there is a new book release. Apart from story line everything seems to be new in these books –cover-page, the writer and publisher. Most of these books will either revolve around protagonists (read: author’s) college life plus love life plus breakup plus sex life and in some rare cases marriage life. But, this book is different and bold –all for good sake.

This book is third by Chakraborty and second of his work that I am reading. The story revolves around five individuals who were bound to meet some or other day among these flashy lights of glamour world. All that they do and all that is done to make them meet each other, makes this book a must read. From fantastic one-liners to good narration, this book has all in it for you to be glued and wait to know- what happens next?

A living legend Shahraan, who fell in love with a prostitute; Nishani- the ‘star-kid’; Reva and Neev- new comers to industry with a common purpose and Kaash- the guy who loved only one women and made love to many. Welcome to ‘How About a Sin Tonight?’ A book, as mentioned at back is truly a beguiling tale of love, ambition, jealousy and betrayal.

Set on the backdrop of bollywood and TV industry this book is a bold step by Chakraborty. The story line is different and fresh. And has great sense of maturity in it. The characters are crystal clear and one can easily relate to them. For me I had many instances when I could relate myself to Kaash. And could think of people I know personally who were almost like many other characters in the book.

Chakraborty’s style of writing is informal and consist all sought of ‘F’ words and going a little forward this book now also have ‘C’ words of Hindi dictionary. It is divided in three-books- Book One: 1986-2010, Book Two: 2012 and Book Three: 2013. The book is very much capable to connect with its indented audience and author was brilliantly able to define its concepts clearly. The language used is far better than what we see in a typical-CB-fiction-novel. Chakraborty at few instances used very good use of metaphor. (Pg. 4 …Happened to notice the haphazard blotch on the wall)

A lot of dialogues and phrases used in the book are worth appreciation. To me most of them were new and Chakraborty deserves a pat on his back for this, Kudos.

1) When a man is desperate, he injures others. When a woman is desperate, she hurts herself the most. (pg 3);

2) Sex is everybody’s home, nobody’s address (pg 3);

3) But when loves sit in silence, it’s never quiet. The glances seemed like flying kisses, the abrupt eye contacts were tight hugs, and the averting of it was a love bite. (pg 42)

4) That’s the life of a woman in every prostitute and the prostitute in every woman. Men come and light a fire in some corner of us and we keep burning till we turn into insignificant ash and thereafter slave to the wind of destiny that carries us as per its desires. (pg 8)

5) Hailing from a middle-class family, money is the only ugly thing I find sexy. (Pg 83);

6) When a wife sleeps with another man, she is a whore. But when a whore decides to sleep with only one man for rest of her life, she still remains a whore. (pg 53) ; and now my favorite;

7) I am Neev Dixit. And I want to be an actor. That’s all I know about myself. Everything else about me, except my sexuality is in state if confusion (pg 62)

And to talk about my favorite character- Nishani, I would say that she is outrageously good. She is bold and aggressive. She knew how to feed the infant of interest so that it grows into a man of obsession.

About most funny character; a minor character- Rakesh, all I can say is he is way to Mommy’s boy. Imagine: He once said he would talk to his mother, to ask if he should have sex or not. And in the other instance when he says that his mother is trying to strike a deal for their honeymoon where she will accompany the couple.

Though everything seems flowery in this book, I also think there were many instances throughout the book where the connection between previous and next set of narration was completely absent. Suddenly a character would drop in and one had to flip pages to check if one had missed out anything about that character in last few pages; only to find out that no- nothing of that sought happened.

Only one thing that I am curious to ask author:

1) On page 161: “…They went to Marine Drive, India Gate, and lastly to Flora fountain” Please explain when and how India Gate was shifted to Mumbai from New Delhi?

“HOW ABOUT A SIN TONIGHT?”
Needless to say, the book has a really interesting title, capable enough to attain a second gaze by the readers. Complexity, uniqueness, ethnicity- this novel just has it all. The writer of this book, Novoneel Chakraborty has penned two bestsellers in the past and this would surely be the third bestseller from his pen. In his earlier books, he portrayed black and white characters but this time, he defined how a grey character should be. All the characters had the flaws of their own and this is what made them more realistic.
The story has bollywood in backdrop and people there seem to be portraying characters, even off screen. It shows the struggle to reach to the top, the fall from there which takes away everything, the hidden truth of the life which is seen as being glamorous. This is a story of five individuals with their different motives, different dreams and different ambitions and how their lives take sharp turns once love enters. All his characters have a uniqueness in them and the dialogues are something to watch out for. And the best thing about his writings is that it never seem to you that the story is written by a man, he gives a proper space to his female characters to cast their influence. In this novel, the characters of Nishani and Reva have the traits which most of the women would find in themselves. After reading each page, you are left with a curiosity to turn the page and know more. Plus, there are superb one liners and awesome quotations which makes it all a treat for eyes.
Like all his novels has a supernatural touch in them, the first one had the concept of rebirth, the second one had the concept of identical faces, even this one ended with a supernatural element- it showed the feelings of Nishani which further helps to give the story a perfect ending. The Editors have also done their job well and it reflects in the book.
So, this is a must-read for all the people who want to explore the meaning of love, the meaning of life and the joy of reading.
P.s- I am not a book reviewer but this book is so awesome that it compelled me to write this review. Trust me, you won’t ever regret buying it!

How about a sin tonight. A book that takes you by surprise by the time you reach the end. Initially starting with the story of a common man, who struggles his life to be an actor. Shaharaan; starting off as a cab driver and ending as THE LEGEND, who lost his love of life. Then introducing two struggling actors Neev and Reva, and their problems, successes and their relationship. After a few more pages the author tells you about the stories of Nishani; the celebrity kid who wants to avenge her father's tragic death and Kaash, the actor harboring a secret from his past.
While the book gives you five life stories, by the end you can find the interlink between all the characters with each other. With the perfect twist and blend, Novoneel Chrakravarty provides the best suspense and conclusion of the actors and their lives.
This book is the must read for people who wants to enjoy romance, thrill, drama and suspense.

Complicated story of complex characters. Since everyone is involved with everyone else, it is difficult to keep track of each character and his/her relationship with the other characters. None the less, the narration is glib.

My Review – Hey friends I hope you have all read the plot so I am not going to waist time and jump directly in the review, this story is a mainly focused on the ordeals, the compromises, the problems which the newcomers face to get a break in the Bollywood, here I want to say that not only in Bollywood in every industry these things are present. The main character of the story is Saharan Ali Bakshi, his journey in film industry, his lost love & the sun he committed to get his lost love, Reva Gupta & Neev both are aspiring newcomers who want to make big in the industry and for that they can go to any extend, thus they sinned . The journey to big screen comes with a great price not just for the newcomers but for star kids also and if your dad is a forgotten star of the industry then the journey becomes more difficult, one such story is of Nishani Rai daughter of an old forgotten superstar of the industry . But Nishani is on a mission to get revenge and one cannot get revenge without committing Sin. Now for the dark horse of the story Kaash a simple at heart but very complex character , he keeps a side of his personality of his heart hidden and to keep it hidden he Sinned. The story has a new feel from other Novo’s work , it refreshes the readers mind. The story from beginning to end keeps the readers interest glued to the story, the character will appeal to the readers minds. The story is knitted very nicely the characters building was done very nicely, though it is a flat story with no such twists and turns but still it doesn’t hampers with the pace of the story. Now let’s get to what did I liked 👍 & what did I didn’t liked 👎 –

What did I liked 👍 – I liked the freshness of this story, the story mostly says that love has a very unique and different way of working, the character building of the story is awesome, the difficulties, problems which the newcomers faces have been shown nicely, it is a story for all kind of readers, it does not showcases any particular genres, this book is very reader friendly, new or beginner readers can get easily accustomed with the story.

What did I didn’t liked 👎 – For start as per me the ending of the story could be way better, this ending is not fit for this book. The story has so much potential that this ending will make the readers unsatisfied because we want more from the story . Next is Kaash’s characters was not used properly, I think his character could have been used more . So saying this I highly recommend this book to you all .

Rating – 4 / 5 ⭐

Overall Review – The story mainly for Novo fans, the freshness of the story is awesome, it is definitely a 18+ story because it contains mature content and sexual scenes 😉😉, other than that I recommend this book highly because this is a mind blowing book.

Hey Peeps….! How are you all? It’s been more than couple of months since I have posted a review. Hope everyone is safe and healthy. I was a bit busy with my academics, so I paused reading and writing for a while.

How about a sin tonight? is a book which perfectly demonstrate that passion can take us to any extent. I would like to make it clear that this book is not a cup of coffee for everyone. The story starts with a life of Shahran, a normal citizen who reaches Mumbai with eyes full of dreams and soul full of passion to become a Bollywood actor. Unexpectedly, he falls in love with a prostitute Mehafil. As we all know that not everyone can become an actor just like that. Simultaneously, the story revolves around another four individuals Reva Gupta, Neev Dixit, Nishani Rai and Kassh Sehgal. All of their life will connect at a point. The only common thing that everyone share is their passion to be an actor. Pick up your copy to know their struggles and games to achieve what they wish for.

Everyone longed for someone’s love and affection. Sometimes it is your anger which destroys your life. Sometimes your desire for something can turns up into your bad dream. Sometimes someone’s memory is enough for a person to survival. There is very thin line which separates love, hate, desire, lust, anger and revenge. Perhaps your hate for someone can turns up into love and vice versa. So, simply this what the book explains. It is a typical NoVo’s writing. The characters are perfectly developed and though it has many characters, it is not confusing. It would be good if the narration is done even more better. The entry of Nishani Rai spiced up the story in second part. It also holds a perfect twist. People who are more into thriller and suspense should read this book.

The story revolves around five characters, which is difficult to manage when it comes to character development and justifying their presence.  The novel is based in the dark lanes of Bollywood where a superstar, two struggling actors Neev and Reva, a childhood love Kash and a girl who has vowed revenge for her father’s suffering come together. Very rarely is a story so well researched. . .
✏The book has been divided into three parts. The first part of it describes the past of every character. The second part brings back together all five characters leading to a climax. The third part explores the thoughts of each person after an unexpected climax.

If there is one author whose book I can confidently recommend to everyone for light reading, it is Novoneel Chakraborty. ‘How about a sin tonight?’ is his third after his two previous bestselling novels.📚

Expected more Wen I started reading this book, but something was missing somewhere. I loved the First story than the rest. The end was unexpected. Of course, one would expect the unexpected from Novoneel. Still, this s nt his best. May be I had already read his best first..
Film industry, stardom, dreams of making it big, jealousy, possessiveness, love, lust, blended with all the characters.
Still the plot was nt that gripping.
The "Dear Nish" letters are another Fav part of this book.
A good read, if read wid less expectations.

Definitely a page turner. The characters introduction were very apt. Even though each characters had their own weight, some stood out more than the others, like Mehfil and Nishaani. Like it happens in every book of Novoneel's, the story was in a fast phase. There weren't much insights in each characters life, which I think should've been there. Giving us time to immense in the character of our preference.
All said and done, the book surely makes you turn the pages until the book is finished.
The good and the worst part of the book was, to me, the self-realizations at the end.

My Rating is 1/5.

This novel depicts about unseen side of Entertainment industry with a maze of lot of characters which may make reader confused. The plot is more like drama and please avoid it if you are expecting for romance, thriller, suspense or crime genre from this book. Being an admirer of Novoneel, this book stands last among all his novels. The entire plot is stretched and a lot of characters are developed but none of them has any significant role to play.

To summaries, please avoid if you don't want to waste your time.

By Novoneel Chakraborty. Grade B+
Most reviewers at VoB have come under fire for infamously trashing many of the young new writers. But Novoneel Chakraborty is a different story. He is the author who has managed to stand out. When I heard a friend describe his book as ‘a sinful cuisine’ and checked out the cover (oh, so gorgeous) I decided I couldn’t miss it.
An edge-of-the-seat thriller from the bestselling author of A Thing beyond Forever and That
Kiss in the Rain
In the biggest casting coup of the Hindi film industry, five top stars are signed up for a new movie: Shahraan—a living legend still lamenting the loss of his first love; Reva and Neev—newcomers allied in a common journey; Nishani—the celebrity kid who must avenge her father’s untimely death; and Kaash—the actor harbouring a secret love from his past. As their intimately intertwined personal stories take centre stage, the industry’s underbelly is left exposed for all to see. By the time the curtain draws to a close, the gossip-hungry media has enough fodder on its plate to last a lifetime.
Novoneel Chakraborty, bestselling author of A Thing beyond Forever and That Kiss in the Rain, unveils the grime behind the glitz, the insecurities and compromises, in a world where aspirants come prepared to strike a Faustian bargain. A beguiling tale of love, ambition, jealousy, and betrayal, How About a Sin Tonight? will leave you asking for more.
The book is about five stars who work in a movie together. The book starts with Shahraan, initially. He left home in order to become a superstar. But his life wasn’t that easy; for years he worked as a taxi driver, then moved onto the DA, got small roles to play and ultimately years later came his big break. Through this all, he had an equally important partner with him- Mehfil. A local prostitute, whom he had fallen in love with.
Mehfil was sold at the age of ten by her father and then transported to Begum- a pimp. Men came to her with weird quenches and used her to fulfill them. But she was a prostitute, not a respectable person. The story of Shahraan and Mehfil is heart-wrenching and encompasses a world of its own.
We also have Neev and Reva, and read how they came together and fulfilled their dream of the film industry. Then the fifth character is introduced (I admit, I found this village of characters a little tedious), Kaash, who is Nishani’s childhood friend. Nishani who? The daughter of Shekhar Rai, a former Bollywood star who was forgotten when he met an accident on the scenes which involved Shahraan. Nishani is the antagonist, a perfect femme fatale, turned on my revenge.
As I said, this village of characters takes some patience to go through. The author, thankfully, handled it with all the precision of a master, and craftily justified their existence.
For casual readers, the prose would not be easy to wade through. The language is cerebral, with liberal use of metaphors, symbolism and subtext. But aspiring writers and readers who appreciate good writing would find this delightful, and realize how much the author has grown from his first book.
The best part of the book were Mehfil and Shahraan. The story of Mehfil being sold in prostitution gives light to a leading problem facing the country these days. It makes people aware of the pain these people face, which the society has put a curtain on because it is ”indecent”. It helps us look from their eyes, empathize with them and teach the Gen Y against this.
Having said this, I would like to warn our prudish readers that this book is not for the faint of heart. The explicit sexual references would make most of the squeamish readers blanch, but holding back on that front would make the book lose some of its authenticity. Can you really have showbiz without the sex and the money?
1) If the apartment was a person, Reva wondered standing right outside it, it needed a birth- control pill. It looked fucked up from all sides.
2) (Nishani is telling this to her uncle when he tries to warn her about the life in Bollywood) If life is a horny bastard, I’m a bitch in heat.
3) (Nishani asks this to a man she is supposed to give a blow job to) ”Is your tool clean?
“I just washed it with Dettol in the toilet.”
To conclude, I would say that while there were some parts that were unnecessarily stretched and slow to complete, this book marks a new milestone in contemporary Indian writing, and all those who have a hankering for a good read backed up by strong characters would love this.

SYNOPSIS -

Novoneel is widely known for his out of the box themes and he lived up to his image in this book. This book is set in Mumbai - The City of Dreams and features the story of five stars whose lives are intertwined. It unveils the harsh secrets of Bollywood, sacrifices and insecurities behind the glam and glitz which are unbeknownst to the common people. The book also throws light on some major issues that everyone faces in today's world like jealousy, insecurity, infidelity, ambition and greed. I also love how it focuses on injustice faced by women in a patriarchal society and how their actions are judged much severely compared to men. It covers the journey of the five stars since they set foot in film industry till they learn the biggest lessons of their lives. Amidst all the social stigmas, this book revolves around the most important theme - Love, in every kind of relationship and in unfathomable and unimaginable ways.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS -

1 - Shahran Ali Bakshi

Shahraan was the biggest superstar in Bollywood whom every star considered their idol. He was a young boy who came to Mumbai to become a star and struggled a lot to reach where he was. But before he got the limelight, Shahraan fell in love with a prostitute named Mehfil whom he met in his taxi one day. He decided to marry Mehfil but she soon died due to cancer. MY REVIEW -

I never understood why people criticize this book which is pure perfection. Along with depicting the struggles to reach fame, this books gives numerous epic life lessons which all of us can relate to. Kaash's love letters were the best thing about this book and I've never read such wonderful description of love anywhere else. Shahraan was an epic character but he did display hypocrisy when he expected Reva to fully commit to him while he was still not over Mehfil. Reva always made the wrong choices and was very selfish about her decisions but showed true strength in the end. Nishani was immature for destroying so many lives to seek her selfish revenge but she got a perfect ending where she reunites with her father and got the love she always wanted. Neev was an immature, angry maniac and the worst character of the book who probably deserved all the suffering he got in the end. This book is a mix of every emotion and is sure to stir up your feelings. There's no negative impact of this book but tons of positive ones. So what are you waiting for?
