Amanda Stone needs to hide out from her abusive ex who's been released from prison, through an underground network she's led to rancher and ex Rodeo king Caleb Dunbar and his band of misfits.
I usually find the end of the year festivities overwhelming, so I tend to gravitate to easy and mindless reads… basically trash, soap, and smut. And J.S. typically delivers drama-llama in spades, but I’ve got to say I read three of these together (The Homecoming & Kicking and Screaming) and they have to be some of the slowest, llama-free, reads I’ve ever experienced from her.
This is the story of Caleb and Amanda. Caleb runs a ranch, and Amanda needs a place to hide because her abusive ex-husband/bf (too lazy to double check) just got released from prison. Both are instantly attracted to each other, but this is SLOW moving, and we don’t even get to the smutty parts until 50%.
There’s a teeny bit of action/drama from three players/baddies. None of them get much page time or have much impact on the story which was a total bummer.
🦨 Cecily- The bitchy wannabe OW 🦨 Diane- The jelly SIL 🦨 Lance- Abusive ex
Bottom Line- It was ok, but not the awesome OTT craziness she usually delivers. It wasn’t as boring as The Homecoming and Amanda wasn’t insufferable like the h from Kicking and Screaming, so this was (for me) the best of the three.
I really liked this book. Damsel in distress is one of my favorite themes. Caleb wasn't your typical Jordan Silver OTT alpha male. He was alpha but, he wasn't pushy or as demanding as some of her other heroes. I liked how he took the time to ease her into things. He was very sweet with her and had no trouble taking care of her "problem". I especially liked that Amanda didn't put all males into the same category as her ex and didn't have a problem with being around the guys on the ranch. She was strong and not whiny. I loved how she came out of her shell and could put Caleb in his place. And we get a sweet epilogue to boot!
3.5 stars This is Jordan Silver gone mainstream. I mean there were some issues, but I would swear this was edited! Crazy, right?! Very toned down alpha. Likable, but I prefer her crazy OTT alphas!
All in all this was a sweet story. The heroine did not talk much and most of the story is from Hero POV; so I found her hard to relate to. But not unlikable. It moved fast, yet still dragged a little because it was not OTT.
I think that because I was used to one thing from this author, when I got something different, I am having trouble digesting it.
Great story with fab characters. Loved Caleb to bits, he was so alpha but sweet with it too. Amanda went from weak to strong and her transformation was great to read. Another Jordan Silver hit!
Well color me Un-P.C. but I like a dominant over protective alpha male who loves his woman to distraction.
Caleb is a rancher who has become a sort of half-way house for people who've needed to disappear for their own safety, all men. His brother the sheriff brings him Amanda. A young woman who barely survived her ex's abuse and now the ex has been released from prison on a technicality.
Pretty much immediately Caleb is smitten and his motley crew of ranch-hands become her protectors as well. 24 hours later he's in love and knows she's the one.
This was a pure fairy tale but I loved it. The ranch hands are funny and Caleb is sexy. There's the snotty sister-in-law, the slutty rich girl who wants Caleb though he's made it clear she's nothing to him. Amanda is sweet and healing in her new environment.
Most of the perspective is Caleb with just a couple of Amanda's perspective. I hear Caleb is a bit toned down from most of Jordan Silver's heroes. I've read one other by her but I'm interested in reading more, especially since a lot of her books are on sale at Amazon.
Amanda Stone had lived a life that was dictated by others and even despite the obvious abuse she was getting no one helped. After another beating left her close to death she fled and found herself under the care of an abuse protection group.
Caleb Dunbar is used to getting men who have landed themselves in trouble looking for another chance when his cop brother comes around. However he was not expecting the beautiful woman who needed protection. Caleb knows she is the one he has been waiting for but he needs her to feel safe and cherished with him before he takes another step with her. With the help of his men who are equally enchanted with Amanda they make sure she is protected at all times.
A bit softer for a Jordan Silver but I loved it. Amanda is a bit timid and finding her legs but once she does she is a force to be reckoned with. Caleb is a gem you love how sweet and out of his element he is with Amanda. Great read.
Through the underground network that helps out people who's lives are endangered Amanda finds herself at Caleb's ranch. There is strong chemistry between the two. But both are leary to follow through. Amanda is hiding from her abusive ex-husband who almost killed her and is still threatening her life. Most of the men on the ranch have come from the underground network also. Their stories is highlighted in the book. But the feeling to protect her is very strong with each man. This is a story of an alpha male who will do anything to protect what he considers his. That includes Amanda. I have read several of Jordan Silver's stories and there are a few that I trully enjoyed this is one of them.
I went in with low expectations and was left disappointed... DNF 27% (Thus I did not give it a star rating) This book is about...sex. That's the best way to put it. The internal dialogue from the beginning of the book is about that physical pull and infatuation between the two main characters. After a while, it became really crude. And personally, I don't enjoy the kind of talking/thinking that revolves only around sex.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Then there is the plan to commit murder as a way of vengeance.... 1. It did not make me like most of the ranch hands because they knew how to do it...even if they are doing it for the heroine. 2. They have known Mandy for all of two days and they ALL care so much about her, and feel so deeply sorry for her suffering, they are willing to plan the murder of her EX?? Really? 3. Mandy is a really flat character. She has the characteristics of a woman who has survived spousal abuse, but her back story and the way she choose to handle the challenge coming her way is just too TSTL. I have read better.
But really, what made me quit this book was the plot to commit real murder....and Amanda's "Bye Letter" after she's cried her heart out from self-pity that first inspired the men to plan murder. I just couldn't stand how this whole situation was handled.
I know what to expect with this author. OTT alpha caveman and a woman who will go along with it.
Amanda gets to Caleb's ranch thru an underground network run by his brother. Caleb has been known to help out and has taken in many of the men that come thru. Many are now workers at his ranch.
In the case of Amanda it's a bit different. She is hiding from her abusive ex husband. He has recently been released from jail so Amanda is running scared thinking he may want to finish what he started. Caleb is immediately attracted, but he knows Amanda has been thru a lot so he tries to go easy. Amanda is also very attracted to Caleb even though she doesn't want to bring him and problems because of her past.
This was a pretty fast read. Caleb and Amanda figure out their relationship. There is some drama from a jealous shrew who with inside help from within Caleb's own family, makes Amanda confront her past. With the support of Caleb and his misfit group of cowboys, Amanda is finally safe and is able to fully move on with her life and Caleb.
It was okay. The FMC is on the run from an ex husband she never wanted. Who has tried to kill her more than once. Who was recently released from jail on good behavior. What man’s justice system right there. lol smh. Anyway, it’s insta-lustlove for the MMC. They only get together/sex at the 50% mark. After that it’s a rush to babies and the alter, through lots of sex. The ex get a somewhat just desserts comeuppance, the barely-OW Cecily gets run out of town but that’s about it. But the jealous SIL stays in the family on the fringes. That was just sad. She supposedly changed but she was never really forgiven. The author should have just kicked her out of everyone’s lives. Now her character will be the pathetic family member no wants around but the brother is too loyal or in love and stays in a sad marriage with her. I wished he had gotten a better outcome instead of that.
Oh well, HEA’s usually aren’t for all the good characters in a book. It’s a somewhat forgettable story. Good luck.
This just wasn't for me. The leading man is Caleb ex rodeo champion and now rancher. He is a farmer who is apparently a millionaire since his family has a private jet.
The leading lady is Amanda who is a very young woman running from an abusive ex husband. She is brought to Caleb's front door and hes basically telling...not asking her to marry him and have his kids in about a week.
She was a broken woman trying to find inner strength from a man who beat and almost killed her and he immediately is thinking of his plans to get in her pants. Huh?
I know he's a rancher but he had way too many farm animal references that assimilated Amanda to how he treats farm animals. It was very strange.
I like this authors work and the storyline of this book had a lot of promise, but I mean she just got out of an abusive relationship and is on the run from him, he literally beat her and shot her and it’s her only relationship experience and then Caleb is all controlling and telling her to do what he says otherwise there will be punishment? And how he treats her after the confrontation with the ex to vent his anger through sex, you think her ex never did that to her why is he any better? And the sister in law is such a bitch. It doesn’t flow as well as the authors other work and is mostly Caleb’s POV with a few Amanda chapters
Annoying book. Writing is weird, way to many edit problems. It's a given with most romance books that the male lead is well endowed, in this book we get a measurement and it's ridiculous!! Personally I found the idea scary as Hell! No way would that "monster" (his description) get near me. Too many references to it penetrating organs. Just yuck! I'm not a prude and like a good hot book but this bordered on gross.
I love the works of Jordan Silver. Amanda is on the run from her ex and has found a sanctuary at Caleb's ranch. One look at Amanda and Caleb is thinking that he has found his one. Everything is going well on the ranch for Caleb and Amanda but there are those that don't want to see this union and is seeking those from Amanda's past to wreak chaos. There is never a dull moment in this story with all of its twists, turns and drama.
JS does it again. Who doesn't click for a taste of instant alpha, and seriously when does she ever disappoint her readers....umm, NEVER. Good fast hot read, all in JS personal style.
Didn't like the hero isn't the usual over the top JS hero. Story was just ok. Not too much over the top drama...a negative for someone who likes JS over the top drama tropes.
Caleb Dunbar is a simple man. Did some time on the Rodeo circuit, now owns a successful ranch. He has a mottly crew of ranch hands, some are friends from his rodeo days, a few came by way of his younger brother the Sheriff. Sheriff Drake Dunbar, has a secret life. He is part of a group that relocates People in trouble, those that the law can't or won't protect. Caleb is his go to for the difficult placements. Amanda Stone was nearly beaten to death by her husband, before he was done, he put a bullet in her. He has been in prison for the last 4 years, but now he is out. She ran. Her new home is on a remote ranch. Caleb has never taken in a female, her story fires up all his protective genes. A few hours with her under his roof, the possive ones kick in. By the next day, he is staking his claim, much to the amusement of his crew. Amanda has the whole ranch wrapped around her finger. Caleb and the crew, work on building Amanda back up. They have to deal with a trouble making women, who has been trying to get her claws in to Caleb. A spoiled snob of a sister in law. Caleb's crazy parents. What to do about Amanda's ex. He has to pay. A fast paced, sweet and steamy alpha cowboy story. Loved Caleb and the crew. The epilogue wrapped their story up nicely.
Oh wow! This was such a great story. It had a rich storyline. There were so many aspects to love about it.
Caleb’s push and pull on waiting and being soft in her versus being his natural dominant, pushy self felt just right. I love that he was always so considerate of her. He had everything covered and planned for to prevent anything triggering her.
Oh and Mikey and the other guys! They had such a great chemistry with Caleb. I love that while there were some natural minor jealousy, there was a deep rooted trust. The way they all felt so protective of her was so sweet.
On that thought, there were a handful of characters here and all felt well rounded. And they all add to the strength of the story.
It’s hard to comment about the heroines in Jordan Silver’s books since it’s mostly male POV. But I adore Amanda. She never felt weak to me. What happened to her was peer pressure and even fatherly pressure.
So this is the third or fourth book I’ve read by this writer and her tropes are really good . It’s her execution that needs work. Some of her stories are a lot of sex and very little substance . I actually thought this one was really good and did have hot scenes but it was balanced . The hero owns a ranch and has a crew of jokesters . They are hilarious especially when they mess with him about his woman . The heroine is running from her abusive ex who beat her and shot her in the head and left her for dead . The only complaint I have on this one is they fell in love in a day , he preposed after a week, and that was just unbelievable to me but this is fiction!
What a beautiful story! Amanda has had a very bad start to life. She was forced to marry a man that beat her and when she finally left he beat, stabbed and shot her before leaving her for dead. When he was release on a technicality she had to disappear and used an underground group that helped people disappear from bad situations. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine she would end up on a ranch with the most handsome man she had ever seen. What to say about Caleb? Omg he is so sweet and perfect! Just the right amount of sweet man and alpha. He knew immediately that Amanda was his other half! Would they get there happily ever after or will Amanda’s ex or a spoiled jealous woman ruin their chances?
If you have read any of Jordan's books, I don't have to tell you about the hot and heavy!!! If you haven't you are missing a great author!! Caleb was a story of love, trust and family along with new beginnings. Of course we all know with family comes some drama, but as you read this story you will be surprised to finally find out where it came from. I love the possessiveness that Caleb had for Amanda, but in my opinion, the ranch hands aka the boys stole the story and my heart, especially Mikey and that silent but deadly Simon!! Hopefully we can get a series started with a book on both of them...lol
The author touched on a sensitive subject with women and I was incredibly impressed with her work. This story has a heroine that went through a abusive relationship that might be offensive to people so I would proceed with caution. The guy was remarkable in his pursuit and always put her needs first that's why I loved him. The guys were definitely protective and I hope we see another novel with those guys. I would also like the author to give drake a book and get rid of Diane.
-h not a virgin (divorced) -experienced H (he's been celibate for a few months when he meets the h) -dual POV (mainly H's POV) -she's 22, he's in his early 30's -no real OM drama -slight OW drama (not an ex, the hero hated her) -no separation -mention of domestic abuse (the h's ex husband used to beat her and the last time he went after her he shot her) -the hero was a jealous alpha but not as OTT as the heroes JS generally writes -no cheating or scenes with OP -epilogue: around 3 years later -married with a kid and another on the way
