I was so excited when I learned that Victoria Vane was releasing another historical romance. This was a must read for me because Victoria happens to be one of my favorite authors. I have say that I thoroughly enjoyed this novella.

Adele Vannes was trapped in a loveless marriage. Her husband was a mean and dishonorable man who humiliated her time and time again.

Valdrik Vargr, The Norse Wolf was sent to Brittany to claim the Kingdom. In order to do that, he must defeat Adele’s husband and then wed her.

At first Adele wants nothing to do with this fierce Viking warrior. She makes plans to render Valdrik and his army useless by drugging the wine that they will partake in during their wedding celebration. But she soon learns that Valdrik is a not what she thought him to be. He has treated her kindly and was so very gentle and tender towards her feelings. She very much enjoyed his kisses and actually found herself craving more.

The love/sex scene had some very good steam added to it. As always Victoria Vane never disappoints me with the heat she adds into her books.

There were a few really good secondary characters added in so when the book was concluded I did a fist pump in the air when I saw that they too will get their own books.

My only complaint, I wish the book was longer.

Brenton Wolf was a really good start to a series that will be a must read for me.

I'm thrilled that Victoria Vane has returned to historical romance, and even more excited that she's taken on the medieval world - a world I love reading about.

Breton Wolfe is the first in Ms. Vane's new series. It's what you would expect in medieval romance, but written with her flair for words and ability to bring the past to life to make you feel like you're there, living the story rather than just reading it.

One of my favorite things about this time period is how caveman-esque the men are - and watching as these strong, clever women tame them. I'm looking forward to visiting more of this exciting world in Ivar's and Bjorn's stories!

4.5 Stars! History Victoria Vane style! Valdrik the Viking...Va-Va Voom!

There few authors that can hold a candle to Victoria Vane's beautiful prose and captivating storytelling when she puts her own unique spin on history and brings it to life!

I wasn't sure the direction this story was going to take, so I was a little puzzled in the beginning, and then when I realized where it was going and put the pieces together, I was all in and couldn't wait to read more!

The story is somewhat brutal and harsh in nature at the beginning, but appropriate for the time period and the cultures that are referenced, and as it moves forward the reader can sense the warm, sweet and tender that is to come. I love stories that involve people of different ethnicity, and especially when enemies become lovers.

There is strong, compassionate heroine in Adèle, she's torn between her sense of duty and the intense feelings that are stirring for her sworn enemy. Valdrik has a reputation that puts fear into his enemies on the battlefield, but when he meets his capture, he's stunned by her beauty and bravery, and falls for the woman that could be the beginning of his end. Valdrik shows Adèle a side of him that will defy everything she's heard about this brutal Viking. The harder she fights the attraction, the closer it pulls her into his arms and bed!! SWOON!

This author never lacks for details in her stories, and it's evident again that she's done her research. The foundation for the history in that time period and setting is in place, and then the magic and splendor begin when the author introduces us to charming characters and weaves a fascinating tale that captures reader's imaginations.

Why not a full 5 stars? There is a brief period in the story where a separation takes place and I felt the story lost some of its momentum. However, I understood the situation as it related to the overall plot, and that this is a novella where there is a limit to word and page count. Taking that into consideration, I still felt the author was able to give the reader a complete story which I truly enjoyed. This included an satisfying, sweet epilogue that segues into the next book and will have readers wondering what is to become of the brothers.

I am a huge fan of Victoria Vane and love that as of recent she's delved into contemporary romance, but when she takes readers back in time her writing takes on an epic quality and nothing can quite compare! And now with the knowledge that Breton Wolfe is the stepping stone of what is to become a series...well I'm giddy with glee!

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical romance, Vikings, enemies-to-lovers themes, and anyone who enjoys exceptional writing and brilliant storytelling!

A very boring novella! I quit reading it a month ago and just picked it up again. It was still dull, mundane, and that's saying a lot since there's only 118 pages.

This book should be ashamed to call itself a Viking book!

4.5 Stars. Oh, this was so much fun to read. I don't read as much HR as I once did; but not only is this one of my favorite historical eras, it was written by one of my favorite authors. The story was short, novella length, and was delicious reading. It reminded me a bit of an old favorite of mine, about a Norman conqueror and his Saxon mate. I have not read any of the books that served as the source for the material of this story; but I found this tale of love between a Breton noblewoman and a Norse conqueror in a land locked in war to be captivating reading...and there are two more brothers to go.

Besides the always excellent writing and storytelling; one of the hallmarks of Victoria Vane's writing is the research that goes into her stories. Be it Georgian rakes, modern day Montana cowboys, or Norse warriors; the wordbuilding, excellent plotlines, and attention to detail Vane puts into her stories always makes for a pleasurable read.

Thank you to Victoria Vane for gifting me with this story...

Excellent Viking Novella Set in 10th Century Brittany

Set in 10th century Brittany, this is the story of Adele of Vannes, the daughter of a duke and granddaughter of a king and the Viking who claims her. Adele was bartered at birth in a marriage treaty for the sole purpose of producing a royal heir. When her philandering husband, the duke, is slain by Norse marauders, she marries their chief in order to protect her home and her people.

Valdrik Vargr, “the Norse Wolf”, has dreams of a dynasty and so he uses his might and his shrewdness in statecraft to conquer Brittany and claim Adele’s hand to sire sons from royal blood to solidify his hold.

Vane does a wonderful job of bringing us into the times of the Norsemen who arrived in France (Brittany in this case) not to pillage but to conquer and settle. Vane does her research and it shows. This is the first of three short tales that involve the matches made by Valdrik and his men. A great short read.

Victoria Vane flair for writing historical romance shines bright in her new historical series, World of de Wolfe Pack. I for one am hooked and ready for the next book.

In my years of trying to read novellas I have concluded that it takes a talented author to write a well-rounded novella that satisfies my full length novel appetite and Mrs. Vane has that talent, she created a romance between two characters and set up a world in the shortest amount of time possible and then, she also leaves you hungry for the next couple’s story.

My only regret with this story is I wished the author could have wrote in more detail of the world such as, clothing and the setting of the world in the castle. I really do believe if she would have added just a few minor touches, this novella would have been a knock out for me.

I enjoyed the characters especially Adele, you cannot help but feel for her at first and you cannot help but admire her for her strength given the time period. Valdrik is the right character to bring out the best in Adele. Together they can take on anything that comes there way.

Vane leaves you with one HEA and sets you up with a cliffhanger at the end for the next couple. I love it when an author has the talent to leave you hanging in for the next couple in the series.

If you want a quick hot Medieval Romance please give this book a try.

Exciting and skillfully written, this medieval novella begins the first in a three part saga of The Wolves of Brittany Series. This is a world of the strongest wins and women are treated more as chattel and have to submit to their husbands. It can be a cruel world as in the case for Adele of Vannes, daughter of a duke and granddaughter or a king. She was forced to marry Rudalt, the son of the King of Brittany. Treated brutally by him she somehow maintains her regal bearing and honor. But as with the times of the strongest conquers, Norse raiders led by Vladrik and his two half brothers kill Rudalt and take the castle and lands Adele is wary of any Norsemen due to them having killed some of her family. With the spoils going to the victor, Adele is made to marry Vladrik but plans on escaping as soon as possible. What happens though is Valdrik shows her kindness and passion which she had not experienced by her first husband and things slowly begin to change. Victoria Vane does immeasurable research that makes her stories come alive. This tale is action packed from start to finish but also brings a wonderful love story that conquers time. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series and know I will not be disappointed.

Breton Wolfe, the first of a series, is a fun early-medieval romance that takes place during a time period that we don’t often see featured in historical romances. Or possibly historical fiction, for that matter.

It’s 907 A.D. So the Romans are long gone and William the Conqueror hasn’t yet conquered much of anything. Mostly because he won’t be born for another century plus. But I use him as a touchpoint because this story is set in Brittany. Brittany eventually became a quasi-independent dukedom as part of a united France, but in 907 it was a bunch of squabbling counties and dukedoms who seem to have spent as much time making war on each other as they did in alliance.

They should have remained allies, because this story takes place at a time when the Vikings were famously going a-Viking. Their raids and occasional attempts to settle carved huge chunks out of the medieval history of France and England, among other places. Breton Wolfe is the story of one of those Viking raids that came to stay.

France wasn’t united in 907, which made it easy for the Vikings to divide, raid and occasionally conquer. But the only place seemingly more divided than France itself was Brittany. The setup of this story is that a successful Viking raid sets itself up as a kingdom in France, and that the Frankish king gives his new allies a chance to conquer fractured Brittany. I think everyone may be putting off the day they make war against each other until later, but Brittany is certainly fractured enough to conquer.

One of the young leaders of the Vikings, Valdrik Vargr, is given a small army and the remit to conquer Brittany and rule it, or die trying. Valdrik starts with the weakest link in the Breton lands, and overthrows Radult, Duke of Vannes. Radult is no great loss to the world, but his Duchess Adele is not ready to turn her homeland over to the barbarians who killed her father and brother in their earlier raids.

She’s happy to be rid of Radult, but not all that happy with the agency that accomplished the deed. Until she meets Valdrik and discovers that the Viking barbarian raider is a much better man, not to mention a much more thoughtful lord, than her disgusting husband.

Can two former enemies find a way to make peace? Even better, can they find a way to make love and not war?

Escape Rating B: This is short, eventually sweet, and a lot of fun. It also feels like the setup for a much longer story, which it is. Breton Wolfe is the first of a series, The Wolves of Brittany. So far, the wolf in the title is a nickname, and doesn’t have anything to do with any supernatural wolves. We’ll see.

The story reminds me a lot of A Sword for His Lady by Mary Wine. The setting is different, but the premise is the same. A strong woman is left widowed and in possession of a significant holding. She is forced by circumstances if not at actual swordpoint to give up her independence and marry her conqueror. Said conqueror turns out to be a much better man, and a much better lord for her lands, than the bastard of a husband he replaces. Eventually her resistance crumbles in the face (and other parts) of an intelligent man who knows how to treat a woman in bed. True love conquers all.

There is a difference in the details. Where in the Wine story, the heroine just doesn’t want to give up her independence to the point of being shortsighted and stupid about it, in Breton Wolfe the heroine faces a conflict of loyalties and has a rightfully difficult decision figuring out which way to turn.

While there is the definite possibility that her choice is between life and death, there are other considerations as well. Her cooperation means life and reasonable accommodations for her people. But at the same time, she is accommodating the raiders who killed her father and brother, and is effectively facilitating a Viking takeover of Brittany from its hereditary rulers. If she were a man, it would be her duty to resist, through force of arms if necessary, to her last breath.

At the same time, the current rulers of Brittany are a rapacious and ineffective lot, although not as personally disgusting as her late husband. Valdrik and his people look like they will be better stewards of the country than the men they overthrow. But Valdrik and his people still worship the Norse gods, and Brittany is a Christian country.

Adele of Vannes has a lot of hard decisions to make. Unlike the heroine in Sword, she is never stupid about her choices. Occasionally short-sighted, but never dumb. And she fumbles more than a bit while making those choices, with nearly disastrous consequences for herself and her country. But with ultimately the best intentions.

If medieval romance is your cup of mead, then Breton Wolfe looks like the start of a fascinating series.

"Breton Wolfe" by Victoria Vane

My Thoughts....

This was a interesting historical Viking fiction romance. I did find it somewhat predictable but still the read will keep your attention to the very end. It was something to read how this 'Norse Hunter' [Valdrik] would be able to gain the attention of Duchess Adele especially now that he was now over the 'Kingdom of Brittany.' Now, that the Duchess Adele husband has died will she be able to except what Valdrik had to offers her? I found the characters very well developed, colorful and oh so believable helping to make the read definitely a quick descriptive, colorful page turner. When it all comes together at the end will these two [hero and heroine] ever be able to fully trust each other? This is where I say to get the whole story the reader will have to pick up "Breton Wolfe" to get the whole presentation of a good story.

Thank you for the read from the author for my honest opinion.

Awesome read!!

WOW! A fast paced, action packed tale of strength, passion, loyalty and bravery. What a Historical comeback for Ms. Vane., who hasn't written a Historical Romance in a while. I absolutely loved everything about this tale from the characters to the storyline to the passionate embraces and yes, even the concept of enemies to lovers and beyond. Powerfully written, quick read. I read it in one setting. Highly recommended!! A must read! Once again, Ms. Vane will capture the reader and hold them in awe. Fans of the "World of de Wolfe Pack", Historical Romance, romance in general will be entrenched, and lured into the world of "Breton Wolfe" and it's inhabitants. I can't wait for the next installment. Way to go, Ms. Vane!! Passionate, compelling and powerfully written!

*Warning: this novella contains one rape scene.*

Victoria Vane breaks out of her usual refined Regency period into the untamed medieval era of Brittany, France in this historical romance novella, part of the World of de Wolfe Pack set and the first in Ms. Vane’s The Wolves of Brittany series.

In a primitive world where men conquer and rule the world, women either accept their often misogynistic and animalistic behavior or suffer in silence. Adele of Vannes, a daughter of a duke and granddaughter to a king, is a lady to her core. She submits with grace and heart-breaking resignation to a brutal and dangerous husband who treats her with contempt.

The time of the Viking raids on France in the Medieval Ages is a source of fascination for me so I was thrilled to discover a long-favored author chose to set a romance series against that backdrop. Danger and desire go hand in hand when the Wolfe encounters the Duchess.

Breton Wolfe is a novella that, though a fast and easy read, is also an engaging one. I loved how the author established the two main characters and their two different worlds that come together. I had no trouble seeing the setting and imagining the situations and motives. Valdrick is very much a conquering invader, but he's smart and has a nobility to him in spite of his origins that contrasts with the noble born he is up against. He is clear in his commands, but fair and is willing to earn respect. He gives choice where it can be given and is the first to extend his trust. Adele only has rumor to go by and the long, weary evidence of being married off to a brute in the name of noble family duty. She is amazed by Valdrick's method and yet, he's the enemy so her trust only goes so far.

The romance was sensual, but also sweet. Adele has only seen the darker side of marriage to a lecherous man who only indulged his own pleasure so Valdrick's gentle and caring approach captivates her. He claims her, but he does it in a way that shows he respects her. The steamy connection between these would-be enemies was sizzling and I loved their scenes together.

The action is Medieval sword fighting and arrows, battles and sieges. Cunning rulers manipulating the chessboard of France for their own ends. It was a nice blend of political intrigue and exciting scenes.

There are two more Wolfe Pack brothers and I can't wait to get their stories. I think this is a great fit for those who don't have a lot of time for books, but love a light, spicy Medieval Romance.

My thanks to the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Adèle of Vannes was married off by her parents to the dissolute brute that is Rodalt for political reasons. Fortunately for her, her despicable husband got himself killed during a battle, and Adèle though that would be the end of that, and that she’d finally find peace in her beloved Brittany. But her country was bartered away during another skirmish involving the Norsemen, and Valdrik Vagr arrives on her doorstep claiming that they must marry or else she loses Brittany. Valdrik, for once, came by Brittany by honest means: it was his for the taking, no pillaging required. He is a Viking with a conscience, and will not take Adèle by force, but he does need a bride of royal blood to retain the kingdom of Brittany, and he is quite happy with the looks of the woman. Adèle did not wish this fate on herself, but she will do what must be done for her people, and she is pleasantly surprised that the conqueror is so much more of a gentleman than her late husband.

O the beauty of fiction when you can wish for someone’s demise, in this case the horrendous Rodalt. BRETON WOLFE is a novella from Kindle Worlds’ World of de Wolfe Pack, and also the first novella in a new series by Victoria Vane, and what a debut it is! It is obvious that Ms. Vane has carefully researched her subject, as the Middle Ages feel completely authentic: from the political tugs of war, the battles, the clothes, the behaviour of the characters; the author did everything right. BRETON WOLFE is seriously action-packed, fast-paced, and of course very well written, as expected from Victoria Vane. The characters are very well fleshed-out, and BRETON WOLFE also hints at what lies ahead story-wise, and bear in mind that this is a novella! Ms. Vane even answered that most important question (to me): in which language they spoke with each other. I loved how the romance progressed, how Adèle and Valdrik interacted with each other, and how the respect ignited sparks. BRETON WOLFE is a captivating read, and I am so happy to know that book two will feature Emma and Ivar; this should be as epic! An excellent read!

I've never delved into a Viking romance until now, and clearly I've been missing out! Valdrik was a force to be reckoned with, and watching his interaction with the Duchess Adele stole my heart. This novella provides one with the perfect amount of romance, heat, and action rolled into one. I hated what happened to Adele at the hands of her late husband, and was glad to see Valdrik show her respect, honor, and love. I also enjoyed the pace of the story. I was pleased that despite its short length, the plot was able to unfold without feeling rushed. Even more, I can't wait to read about Ivar and Bjorn, Valdrik's brothers. They were amusing, and I can tell that Ivar and Emma will be a treat! I loved the quotations at the beginning of each chapter, I feel that Victoria placed those with perfection, and each complimented the following passage well. I must also comment on how she delivered the scenery to me. The fight scenes, the landscape, and everything in between brought my imagination to life. I was also surprised to be left hanging by Bjorn at the end, and now I MUST get to the next novella as quickly as possible to see what happens! This novella is most definitely a success, I loved every second.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
AHHH I love Victoria’ story telling!! Each book I read makes me super excited. She has a way to weave a story that makes it impossible to put it down until you are absolutely finished. As I read this book I felt like I was watching the Vikings TV show. I mean a Norse Hunter takes what he wants and our man wanted this duchess.
This book our Duchess, Adele, is promised since birth to a really awful Duke. I mean her wedding night…..just sadness. So needless to say when 4 years into their marriage he is killed by Valdrik…well I didn’t cry any tears. I am pretty sure no one will except for his wench Gisela.
Adele will do anything to keep her people and her beloved Kingdom of Brittany safe. She will even go about and make a deal with the man who killed her husband. Valdrik is impressed by the spine of the Duchess. She will make a deal and honor it to keep her people safe while he is also hoping she will open her heart to him. He forces her hand through the book but still treats her better than her recently departed husband ever did.
Adele and Valdrik begin to understand each other and even care for each other until …wellllll Adele….she might have made a boo boo…….What happens is really fast paced and the couple have to make some decisions : trust each other and give this a go or stay enemies in which case no one wins.

I was looking for historical romance and I got this. I read it in one sitting because it was fast-paced and Victoria Vane writes masterfully, I love all her novels.

Once again, the magnificent author wowed me with her versatility whether it's historical or contemporary romance.

There are some scenes here that others may not like but are true based on historical accounts. The Norsemen's way was to rape, raid, and pillage but Adéle was mistreated by her husband on their wedding night. Despite that, she held her head up high, even when she was humiliated repeatedly by the scattered bastards, she still has this regal bearing.

Vladrik wasn't who she expected. After all, her brother and father were killed by Norsemen so it automatically put him in league with his fellowmen. Guilty by association. Vladrik was challenged by Adéle's ferocity in all things.

Their wedding feast was somewhat of a turning point because both their guards were down and they were able to appreciate each other, that maybe things could work out after all.

There was a bit of a trial after they made love but we have a cliffhanger here which I'm looking forward to reading this year.

Hadn't read anything of Ms. Vane's before, but given that this is part of the de Wolfe Pack World created by Kathryn Le Veque, I was definitely interested in reading this novella.

Viking Raider Varger meets Duchess Adele - after killing her unloved husband Rudalt in a bid to take over the province of Brittany (with the complicit agreement of the King of the Franks). She certainly didn't love her husband, who had mistreated and humiliated her since their marriage, but she also didn't want to be 'friends' with the Norsemen, a group of men who'd killed her father and elder brother years before. But she also came to realize that her cooperation would help her people live, despite what might happen to her.

Varger was eager to put an end to his raiding, and felt that the time was ripe to make Brittany his home, and here was a woman who just might be the conduit to a better life, of peace, prosperity and, more importantly, family.

Although this was just a novella, and therefore unable to expand substantially on descriptions, the action was sufficient to keep my interest - reminding me of a movie I was enamored with for many years about a Warlord and a Saxon maid who found themselves in very similar straits - and I look forward to reading more of the series.

Love thine enemy

The Norsemen have come into Brittany and after a treatise with the Frankish king, they have been told there will be no fight from the king and his armies for a certain part of the country if they would just stop all of their pillaging and raiding! So the stories begin with the eldest of three brothers, and leader of these men, Valdrik, deciding to settle down and take a wife and have some heirs in this new land. That’s IF he survives taking the land, and it’s spoils, which include the lovely Adele, a very recent widow of the prior lord of this particular manor.
The story has an interesting lot, plenty of heat, and a host of colorful characters. I am definitely going to read the next in this series as Valdrik has two half brothers....
I recommend this book to readers of historical romance who enjoy battle hardened warriors, courageous heroines, and a good dose of heat with their hea.

Love finds us in the most unlikely times and places, when we least expect it. This is an intriguing page turner of a story between a Viking and a Breton Nobel woman. An unlikely love and tenderness grows between this woman who had been ill treated by her husband before his death, and her feared enemy who had actually killed her husband. This is an adventure full of betrayal and mistrust. We watch as the characters learn to deal with their emotions, their past perceptions and assumed predilections. Will their attempts to forgive and accept each other actually foster a great love or a greater hate. This is Book 1 of 3 books in this series by Victoria Vane. While each book could easily be read as a stand-alone, I’d recommend you to read the entire 3 book series to get a better picture of the connections between the characters and how their interactions affect their future.

Breton Wolfe is a fantastic historical romance by Victoria Vane. Ms. Vane has provided readers with an outstanding story filled with a fantastic cast of characters. Adele is married and prays daily for her husband's death. But when she learns they are going to be invaded, she prays for her country. Valdrik is the invader that killed Adele's husband and has decided he'll take her as his wife. Valdrik and Adele's story is loaded with drama, humor, sizzle and action. I enjoyed reading Breton Wolfe and look forward to my next book by Victoria Vane. Breton Wolfe is book 1 of the World of de Wolfe Pack: The Wolves of Brittany but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Adele is married to Rudalt, Duke of Vannes. This is a horror of a marriage. Rudalt learns of the Norse invasion and leaves, convinced he will “scare away” the savages. Valdrik is waiting and the Duke challenges him to a fight to the death. Rudalt is killed and Valdrik moves on to claim the Duchy of Vannes. When the Norse appear on Adele’s doorstep she must decide. She chooses to save the lives of her people to the detriment of her own. She must marry Valdrik. The love story between Valdrik and Adele becomes a learning experience for her. She has never been treated with such kindness. This is a wonderful start to this series. I love all Ms. Vane writes. Another great novel!!!

Love the Enemy?

A very good book written by Victoria Vain set in the year of 907 AD, it is set in Brittany. First is a marriage between Adèle the Countess de Vannes and Count Rudalt. The marriage was a disaster and four years later it was no better. Now come the Norsemen to take over a faltering Brittany. Breton Wolfe and his 2 half brothers are not seeking to destroy but to take over the lands and rule. I would recommend this book to you as readers.

Fängt interessant an.
