A huge part of how successful a book is depends on its audience. When a book can speak to a particular child at a particular time in their life, the results can be meaningful. “Forever Young” ain’t speaking to the little ones, but to an older audience who is both familiar with Bob Dylan’s music and understands the book’s message that youth is something to be cherished.
The story begins with a street performer handing an acoustic guitar to a young listener. This unnamed, blond haired boy takes the guitar and begins to practice. As the story continues, the lyrics of Dylan’s song stream by. The child gets older, starts a band, protests against war, and works to save the environment. At the end of the book our protagonist hands the guitar to a little girl, continuing the story.
The high point of this one is the illustration. Brightly retro in style, Paul Rodgers art comes across as truly vibrant. It also may be the fist appearance of Eames furniture in a picture book. The illustrator is clearly a Dylan devotee, as evidenced by the section in the back where he describes the inspiration behind each and every illustration. Again, this section is telling of who the intended reader is.
I see this one getting a lot of looks come high school graduation time, as a new alternative to the “Oh the Places You’ll Go” buyers. I can’t count myself among those who advocate picture book gifts for young adults (unless they are aspiring children’s librarians), but that’s the audience that will be most in “Forever Young”s wheelhouse. Very nice to look at, and a great song, but the message and meaning will be largely lost on young readers.
Forever Young is a song that Dylan wrote for his children "not wanting to be too sentimental." He fails miserably, as the song is poignant and a wonderful lesson to children of any age.
The book is wonderful and is obviously written by a huge Dylan fan. The page illustrations are filled with references to Dylan and his songs, popular and obscure, and a partial page-by-page guide exists in the back. The illustrations are a lot of fun and loosely tell Dylan's story, or perhaps the story of any musician looking to make a difference. My toddler-aged son absolutely loves this book, along with all of the other Dylan-inspired children's books.
Forever Young will particularly appeal to parents who are themselves Dylan fans, but you don't have to be to enjoy the book. It's message is important and timeless and, for me, it says in words far more eloquent than possible for me to come up with what I wish to pass along to another generation.
The words are just the lyrics to Bob Dylan's song. The better part is the illustrations and especially the illustrator's notes at the end. I am not a fan of the illustrations themselves but when explained, I have to admire the thoughtfulness and care that were put into them. The notes really explain the hidden meanings and the relevance in the illustrator's choices and make this a very interesting book.
I think young school age children will enjoy it, especially if the adult reads the notes and uses it as a teaching tool to talk about the things the illustrator included in the pictures as an introduction to history.
I love the words to this song, which are also the words to this book. The illustrations don't knock my socks off, but did grow on me as I was drawn into the details.. the name and titles on book spines, signs, decals on guitar cases, people in crowds. The illustrator's note about hidden things in the pictures interested me, but one would have to be pretty familiar with Dylan's lyrics and 60's music and musicians to register most of them.
Now, as a Dylan fan for 2/3 my lifetime, I was pre- disposed to liking this book--it is the lyrics to Forever Young, and illustrated. The pictures are ok--that is the disappointing part--though they do have alot of historical significance (and if you missed it as you read through the book, the appendix at the end details why every picture is significant and why). I think if you knew someone who was a huge Dylan fan who had a baby, this would be a cute present, but on pure literary value, I would opt for something else.
This is a beautiful book. My six year old loved it. He enjoyed the pictures and my explanations of them, and seemed mesmerized by the lyrics which double as the words to this book. He decided the boy in the book is Bob Dylan himself. When we were done we listened to the song Forever Young and some other Dylan songs, and now my son does a great Bob Dylan impression that makes him, and all who hear, giggle.
And the painful lumps in the throat reading this gave me. Wow.
What a great song! Helps encourage us to become better people. The illustrations are beautiful and interesting and make you want to learn more about the man who wrote the song. The last pages of the book are footnotes on what interesting things we should be getting out of each of the illustrations. Very beautiful.
Una de las canciones más bellas de Bob Dylan convertida en cuento infantil, con ilustraciones de Paul Rogers. Indispensable para fans de Dylan, ideal para leer a los niños, o también uno ya de adulto, antes de ir a la cama.
The book has been translated and published in Vietnamese. Great and moving translation by Ngô Tự Lập
As a conscientious parent, you want your child to grow up with a knowledgeable appreciation of Bob Dylan, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Milton Public Library is pleased to help. This book, with gentle illustrations packed with hidden references for parents, is a great tool. It may, however, be something of a strain on your marriage when you sing the lyrics, as you must.
The song Forever Young is all about staying young in spirit and doing the right thing. This story tells the story of a boy who goes through life honouring the legendary musician. The lyrics encourage the young boy to reach for his dreams and to "build a ladder to the stars". By staying true to yourself and being brave, you can keep the feeling of being forever young.
4.5 stars -- A delight. Plenty of visual catnip throughout the pages for fans of Dylan and the 1960s in general. See how many references you can spot. This would make a nice gift for hip new parents.
Rogers illustrates Dylan's song with scenes of a young boy growing up in New York and becoming a musician. The illustrations also cleverly contain many references to the songwriter’s life and career which are partially explained in the Illustrator’s notes at the end of the book.
I am embarrassed to say I do not know Dylan's music well enough to have gotten all the great references in these marvellous illustrations. Thank goodness there were captions listed at the end that explained it all. My 6 yo picked out The Beatles though, so that's a plus for me.
I'm not a Bob Dylan fan, but I usually like these songs-turned-into-picture-books even if I don't like the songs. In this case the illustrations felt like they were as much about Dylan as the sentiment of the song, which was a negative for me.
Beautiful and nostalgic illustrations go with Bob Dylan's song Forever Young. Many things mentioned in Dylan's albums are cleverly hidden in the illustrations.
